Dune

Dune, like I mentioned earlier, is also a wonderful book. I also recommend this to everyone. Dune is about Paul Atreides and his adventure on Arrakis. His father, the Duke, has been murdered, and another house, the "Harkonnen" have taken over the capital. Paul must team up with the Fremen to destroy Baron Harkonnen. The Fremen are the natives of Arrakis. For a review I wrote in 6th grade, please read below.

Dune-Review

Dune by Frank Herbert 517 pages Published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons/New York The shields are down. The Duke has been shot. The Harkonnen are approaching Arrakeen. Dune is filled with excitement and suspense. It’s an experience of the future. Will the Atreides defeat the Harkonnens? Or will they be left in ruin? I think this is the best science-fiction book I have ever read. There is a lot of action and you can understand most of the things written. There were only a few parts where I was a little lost, and I didn’t know what was going on. There were many things I liked about this book that kept me “hooked” in. The first thing is the suspense. The things Frank Herbert wrote just kept making me want to go on to the next chapter and on. Here is one part that I liked the best: “A rain of blue uniforms came over the cliff wall in front of him, falling in low-suspensor slowness. In a flashing instant, Hawat had time to see they were Sardaukar, hard faces set in battle frenzy, that they were unshielded and each carried a knife in one hand, a stunner in the other. “A knife thrown caught Hawat’s Fremen companion in the throat, hurling him backward, twisting face down. Hawat had only time to draw his own knife before blackness of a stunner projectile felled him.” This part made me really want to read on. I wanted to find out of Hawat would be safe and survive. In this book the Atreides have the role as the “good guys”. Talking about the “good guys” and “bad guys”, this author makes it so you get really involved in the book and you want the “good guys” to win. There’s a really good part in this book where, supposedly, the good betrays the leader but also betrays the evil: “He started to stand up. A sixth sense warned him. He flashed a hand toward the shield switch---too late. A numbing shock slammed his arm aside. He felt pain there, saw a dart protruding from the sleeve, sensed paralysis spreading from it up his arm. It took an agonizing effort to lift his head and look down the passage. “Yueh stood in the open door of the generator room. His face reflected yellow from the light of a single, brighter suspensor above the door. There was stillness from the room behind him---no sound of generators. “Yueh! Leto thought. He’s sabotaged the house’s generators! We’re wide open! “Yueh began walking toward him, pocketing a dartgun. “’How ?’ Leto whispered. “’I’m sorry, my poor Duke, but there are things which will make greater demands than this.’ He touched the diamond tattoo on his forehead. ‘I find it very strange, myself---an override on my pyretic conscience---but I wish to kill a man. Yes, actually I wish it. I will stop at nothing to do it.’ “He looked down at the Duke. ‘Oh, not you, my dear Duke. The Baron Harkonnen. I wish to kill the Baron.” After reading this section, I was surprised Yueh was the actual traitor. I knew at first he was at one point for the Harkonnen but he wanted to join the Atreides. The last thing about Dune that I thought made it very intense was the action and the description of the plot at that time. In this intriguing section, a harvester is harvesting the spice of Arrakis, Melange, and a sandworm(Shai-hulud) is approaching. They contact the harvester but the carryall is missing: “The Duke thumbed the switch, spoke into the microphones. ‘This is your Duke. We are coming down to take of Delta Ajax niner’s crew. All spotters are ordered to comply. Spotters will land on the east side. We will take the west. Over.’ He reached down, punched out his own command frequency, repeated the order for his own air cover, handed the microphone back to Kynes. “Kynes returned to the working frequency and a voice blasted from the speaker: ‘...almost a full load of spice! We have almost a full load! We can’t leave for a ... worm! Over.’ “ ‘... the spice!’ the Duke barked. He grabbed back the microphone, said: ‘We can always get more spice. There are seats in our ships for all but three of you. Draw straws or any way you like who’s to go. But you’re going, and that’s an order!’ He slammed the microphone back into Kynes’ hands, muttered: ‘Sorry,’ as Kynes shook an injured finger. “The Duke took the microphone, punched for his command frequency, said: ‘Two of you toss out your shield generators. By the numbers. You can carry one more man that way. We’re not leaving any men for that monster.’ He keyed back to the working frequency, barked: ‘All right, you in Delta Ajax niner! Out! Now! This is a command from your Duke! On the double or I’ll cut that crawler apart with a lasgun!’ “’In you go, boys!’ he snapped. ‘On the double!’ “The last man came gasping into the rear, said, ‘The worm! It’s almost on us! Blast off!’ “’The worm is now beneath the crawler,’ Kynes said. ‘You are about to witness a thing few have seen.’ “Flecks of dust shadowed the sand around the crawler now. The big machine began to tip down to the right. A gigantic sand whirlpool began forming there to the right of the crawler. It moved faster and faster. Sand and dust filled the air now for hundreds of meters around. “Then they saw it! “A wide hole emerged from the sand. Sunlight flashed from glistening white spokes within it. The hole’s diameter was at least twice the length of the crawler, Paul estimated. He watched as the machine slid into that opening in a billow of dust and sand. The hole pulled back. “’Gods what a monster!’ muttered a man beside Paul. “’Got all our floggin’ spice!’ growled another.” I think Dune is an excellent book and everyone should give it a try. I highly recommend this to anyone. There isn’t anyone who doesn’t like action and excitement.
