BRAKE LIGHTS

Early Broncos came with two different styles of brake lights. One style is a completely red lens with no backup light. The other style is more common and has a small trapazoidal clear section for a backup light. I will offer four different combinations based on this information. With the exception of STYLE 3, the LED lights I offer will completely replace the current light bucket. People have experienced different problems when trying to use LEDs in place of regular light bulbs. The most common problems are 1. they won't work under certain conditions; and 2. the turn signals flash EXTREMELY slow. To combat the second problem, see my Accessories page. The most likely cause of the first problem I listed is that the current flow through the LEDs is not being limited to flow in only one direction. I ran into this problem when I made my first set of LED lights. Each light I will sell has a diode placed in each each light's current path. This will eliminate any current flows in undesirable directions. Also, because these lights are made on fiblerglass curcuit board material and not sheet metal, each light will have a ground wire that will need to be attached to a good ground. I will supply a ring terminal for the ground wire. Below is the description of each style I will offer.

The light shown on the left here is what I am currently running on my Bronco. The lights I will be making will be similar but not the same. The LED's I will use will be surface mount. However, the concept is the same. I will supply a printed circuit board in the shape of the lens that will replace or be placed between the light bucket. To see what the LED's look like, please go to the Custom Work Page.

STYLE 1 - '67-'77

This style light has RED LED's behind the upper red section of the lens, along with extremely bright WHITE LED's behind the clear backup light section. Once I have conducted tests as to the actual brightness of the WHITE LEDs I will know if this will be possible. I do not forsee a problem. At the very least, the WHITE LEDs will be bright enough to see the backup lights during the day. This style is more expensive than the others due to the special WHITE LEDs. I feel however that the extra price will be worth it once I finish testing these WHITE LEDs.

This light has 84 surface mount RED LEDs for the brake and turn signal function. These LEDs have a 210 mcd rating. The backup light funtion will use either 16 square HP-style WHITE LEDs, or 24 surface mount WHITE LEDs. The square HP-style LEDs have a 400 mcd rating whereas the surface mount LEDs have a 1100 mcd rating. The square LED's would look the same as the picture to the left.

STYLE 2 - '67-'77

This style light has RED LED's behind the upper section and amber lights behind the clear backup section. This light is intended for those who do not have their backup lights working, or have externally mounted backup lights and would like to use the clear section for a turn signal. HOWEVER, this will require you to run two wires from your steering column to the lights as the current turn signals operate in conjunction with the brake lights. I will assume no responsibility for your wiring. Please do this mod only if you have sufficient wiring experience with your Bronco.

This light has 84 surface mount RED LEDs for the brake and turn signal function. These LEDs have a 210 mcd rating. The turn signal funtion will use 36 surface mount AMBER LEDs. These LEDs have a 160 mcd rating.

STYLE 3 - '67-'77

This style light has RED LEDs behind the upper section, and a hole behind the clear backup light. This will require some slight modifications to your existing bulb buckets. I offer this light for those who do not wish to give up the light bulb for reverse, but yet want the functionality of LED's for their brake lights. For this light, I am going to ask that you send me your existing buckets so that I can properly assemble the taillight. Hopefully I will have pictures of what will be done.

This light has 84 surface mount RED LEDs for the brake and turn signal function. These LEDs have a 210 mcd rating. The reverse light will be the origional 1156 light bulb.

STYLE 4 - '66 only

This style is for those of you, like me, that have the full red lens with no reverse light provision. This light is simply a bunch of RED LEDs that cover the entire lens. So rather than having merely the upper portion of the lens lit you will have the entire lens lit. This should give a more pleasing look along with being brighter and safer for you and motorists behind you.

This light has 108 surface mount RED LEDs for the brake and turn signal function. These LEDs have a 210 mcd rating.
