That Was Then...
1968
This Is Now!!
2003
This is about me, and my memories of David and
the Monkees..of which I am still making new ones!
I am 49 years old, obviously a first generation Monkees
fan, married for 30 years with
one son, age 16.
I fell in love with Davy the first time
I saw him on the show in Sept 1966 when
I was at the tender age of 11. I'm still
waiting for that feeling to wear off but
I don't think it's gonna happen! I never
missed the show. In fact, I actually got
dressed up to sit in the floor in front
of the tv as close as my mother would
allow to watch. I guess I thought I might
have two-way tv or something and Davy
could see me too! Yes, I'm one of those
girls that David talks about in his show
now who used to kiss the screen when he
was on!
Posters too. I bet I'm not the
only one out there! At least when no one
was looking. Gee, I haven't done that
in... oh... at least... two or three months!
Also used to sit right next to the stereo
speakers just so I could hear better when
he said," Mary, I love you!" in LOOKOUT
HERE COMES TOMORROW! That seems abit silly
now doesn't it? I haven't done that
in......OK, I STILL DO IT ALRIGHT?!!!
You know, I remember sitting on my front
porch steps on sunny Saturday afternoons and
thinking about how nice it would be if I
could just "wish" Davy there! I spent many a
pleasant afternoon that way!
I was also a horse-lover all my life and
still am for that matter. I got my own horse
at age 14 and used to pretend I
was riding with Davy! That also just com-
pleted my fantasy, I mean, I was just PERFECT
for David! Never mind I was only 14 and he
was 23!
I had tickets for the Monkees show coming
to Atlanta, in 1967 I think, and I was so
excited about it! I still remember how
crushed I was when I heard on the radio
that they had cancelled the show because
they were delayed in Japan! Boy, I was
upset! I was looking forward to that show
more than I had the Beatles concert I had
gone to in 1965!!
Never did get to see them live in the 60's.
I guess that's why I was determined to make
up for it later! Well, along came the 70's.
I was 22, only married for a few years,
when I heard on the radio driving home one
day that Davy & Micky were going to be at
one of the local clubs! Well, needless to
say, I rushed home and informed my husband
that we HAD to go! Luckily he agreed.
Anyway, the big night came and we found
ourselves seated pretty close to the stage
on the floor! I mean ON THE FLOOR literally!
Well, it WAS the 70's! When I first saw Davy I
just couldn't believe he was real!
You know how it is. Finally my brain got it
straight and I began to really enjoy the
show. Micky was very funny, still had the
curly hair at that time, Davy was gorgeous
and REAL and Coco was pretty and very
talented I might add. They did the show
the next night too and of course I was
there! I enjoyed it immensely, finally
getting to see at least half the Monkees
live!
It never dawned on me to try to meet them
after the shows. I still don't know why.
But that's ok...the 80's were coming...
1986 - The Monkees show is running non-stop
on the MTV Monkees Marathon. It got me
thinking about Davy again. Then I saw some-
thing about Monkee Business Fanzine in the
paper. I subscribed right away. Ended up
going to the Philadelphia convention in August that year.
and started "following" the guys around alot!
Got to be friends with Davy's bus driver
Ed and also his bodyguard Dave Lewis, who
could look as foreboding as a grizzly bear
but who was really just a teddy bear!
Finally David got to know me on sight, and
would say hello to me by name! I was happy
to say the least. 1986 went into 1987 and we
continued our "tour" with the guys, having a
blast! Spent a week at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe.
Saw two shows a night! What a wonderful week that was!
In 1988 my only "Davy" trip was to Cherry
Hill, NJ to a booksigning. I was 7 months
pregnant! Hard to stand in those lines when
you're about to explode. When I got up to
David he asked me how it was going. I patted
my huge stomach and said "It's getting
bigger!"
He laughed since he understood. Anita was also
about 7 1/2 mos pregnant at the time (with Annabel!)
He was very sweet that day.
In 1989, my best friend Annette and I went on a trip
to New York, Toronto and back down to Virginia following
David around.
(I'm sure he was THRILLED!)
We had such a good time. Too much to tell
here though. Just ask Davy next time you
see him how much fun it was for him to get
through the Canadian border without his
passport and what he had to do to make it
through!!!!
I went to a show or two in 1991 and saw David
in The Real Brady Bunch in 1994.
Family matters and financial constraints
kept me from going since then but now I'm
BAAAACKKK!!! As you will see if you visit my
Epcot page, I finally caught up with him again!
When I walked up to him the first night in the
autograph line..I wasn't sure he would remember me.
I mean it had been seven years and I was about 60
pounds thinner thank goodness! But I barely got my
introduction started when he interrupted me with..
"Mary! Yes.. of course I remember!" Well that set
the tone for three of the best days
'with' David I have ever had! He was so sweet to me
and to my friends Annette and Deb. Especially at the
booksigning. He gave me such a bear hug..at least
it felt like it to me..that you couldn't get the grin
off my face for quite awhile.. in fact..it's STILL there! :-)
It was a wonderful re-introduction to him..that I really
enjoyed and a wonderful joy-filled three days that I
mentally needed too. My husband is wheel-chair bound
at age 49 now..from a so-far undiagnosed disease so
life has not been good lately. So it was nice to 'escape'
for abit..with my husband's blessings. All in all
my adventures surrounding David and the Monkees are
so wonderful and so exciting that it makes me feel just..
well.. more ALIVE!
Anybody know what I mean?
Especially known to me..when David takes the time
and goes out of his way to be nice to his fans
well, it just makes me realize what a wonderful man
he really is. I'm sure the other Monkee's fans feel
the same way about their favorite.
I don't think that they realize
just how much joy they bring to their fans!
Well, I hope I haven't bored anybody to tears or
anything. I left out ALOT believe me. I
probably could write a book... Hey maybe I will
someday.. could call it.."Dedicated For Life to Davy!"
What do you think?
