RACE REVIEW: DETROIT

GIL DE FERRAN # 5 VALVOLINE/CUMMINS - HONDA/REYNARD/GOODYEAR

What: TENNECO AUTOMOTIVE GRAND PRIX OF DETROIT Round Thirteenth of the 20-races FedEx Championship Series for the PPG Cup

Derrick Walker -Team Owner: " Not the end that we would have wanted. The effort is the same, whether you win or crash. We move on, the championship is still within our reach. Naoki's come back race was a nice boost to him and the team. Finishing the race was a goal, with the kind of race that it was, Naoki and the boys did well."

GIL de FERRAN # 5 Valvoline/Cummins/Walker Racing Honda Started 3rd , finished 22nd (not running-contact)

Gil de Ferran qualified third at 114.456 mph (1:13.789). He made his fifth top-three start in the last six events, dating to Portland, where he qualified third and won the race.De Ferran lost third and fourth place on the start. On lap 15, # 5 de Ferran completes his 9000th lap in his CART career. During the caution period, while warming his tires up for the anticipated restart on lap 33, Gil de Ferran makes contact with the outside wall at turn 14 and breaks the left front suspension. That extended the caution period by another lap. De Ferran subsequently retires from the race due to contact.

Gil de Ferran: "I had fallen back on restarts. I was very conscious of that, and to prevent that, I wanted to put some heat in the tires. I was weaving and the car got away from me; it took me by surprise. It was my fault, no other explanation. My apologies to the team. We will erase this next week at Mid-Ohio."

NAOKI HATTORI #15 Alpine/Walker Racing Honda Started 26th, finished 16th

Naoki Hattori (Alpine Honda Reynard) qualified 24th at 107.737 mph (1:18.391). His first start since the season opener a Homestead where he sustained a double compound fracture of the left leg during an opening lap accident, in the second turn of the first lap in a grinding collision with Al Unser Jr.

Naoki Hattori: "I am happy to be back. Those last four months were too long. I was not as fast as I wanted, but we will be doing more testing and that will help. This was a good race for experience: restarts, running in close traffic on a street course, and running on a tight circuit. We brought it home, so this is a good start to coming back." "Now I am much more confident with my endurance at the race. I am also happy that I was able to show my fans my presence at the race much earlier than expected. It was not easy 4 months to work on just rehabilitation and training since the injury, but I really enjoyed the moment when I was actually on the track, racing again. I would like to thank my team owner, Derrick Walker and all the crew members to support me while I was away and to help me get back to racing in Detroit. " Friday, August 6th , 1999

Gil de Ferran (Valvoline/Cummins Special Honda Reynard) qualified third to earn his fourth consecutive top-three start at Detroit, including a pole in 1997.

GIL de FERRAN, "It was a good qualifying run today. Yesterday, we were quite confident we'd be in the first two rows. This morning, we had a really good morning. We made some changes to the car and it seemed like everything we did went the right way. We went out on the first set [of tires] and the car was behaving quite well but on the second set, the car didn't do as well as I thought. But third is a good starting position. It shows that Derrick's team is on the right track. We've been competitive week-in and week-out, and hopefully things will go well tomorrow."

What: TENNECO AUTOMOTIVE GRAND PRIX OF DETROIT Round Thirteenth of the 20-races FedEx Championship Series for the PPG Cup

When: Sunday, August 8th, 1999 at 3:00 PM ET.

Where: The track is set up on the west end of Belle Isle Park, an island in the Detroit River between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario in Canada. Access is by bridge from Jefferson Avenue, just east of downtown Detroit Belle isle is a rare treat: an urban street course without all the concrete canyons. It offers tall shade trees.

Distance: 168.912 Miles - 72 Laps 2.346 Mile, 14-Turn Temporary Road Course

Track History: 1999 marks the 18th running of the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit. Originally a Formula One Series race, the event was established in 1982 by Detroit Renaissance, Inc. It transferred to the Indy car format in 1989, and has spent the past seven years as a part of the CART FedEx Championship Series. In 1992, the race moved from the streets of downtown Detroit to the scenic Belle Isle Park. The event was sold to IMG Motorsports in August, 1993. Tenneco Automotive became the title sponsor in 1999, making the official name of the race the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit.

The Circuit: The quarter mile track extension added in 1998 features a faster, wider, longer track that will continue to spark more passing and new track records. The new race course section, between turns 3 and 4 is covered with plastic mesh, dirt and grass for 11 months of the year. Approximately 2 weeks before the event the dirt and grass will be removed with front-end loaders and then swept repeatedly until the track is clean. The entire set-up and tear down of the event will take approximately eight weeks. This eight-week period breaks down to five weeks of set up and three weeks of tear down.

Detroit " Fast Facts"

-Temporary Street Circuit A very narrow speed envelop. City streets are bumpy and crowned. -The Setup Mechanical grip is important on such a bumpy surface. -The Driving Style You can get away with small errors, but not big ones -Qualifying Position Starting in front is essential. There are very few passing zones; therefore, starting and staying in front are essential. -Pit-Stops -Should be a two-stop race with stops coming between laps 19-28 and 48-57. A well-executed pit stop can gain you a few positions -Engine Performance / Fuel Management This is a track where engine performance is not as important as good chassis balance. It is important, however, to have good torque and bottom end power, coming out of the corners. Good fuel mileage will enable team to go fullout and race to finish.

-Gil de Ferran received the second highest vote total in first-half balloting for the CART All-Star Team.

RACE PREVIEW: DETROIT

De Ferran is 7h in the PPG Cup standings with 88 points, has finished on the podium in three of the past six races, including a victory at Portland, runner-up effort at Cleveland and third at Milwaukee. He also has qualified among the top three drivers for five events, including pole at Motegi and Toronto, second at Cleveland, third at Portland and Road America.

3d Degree for de Ferran in Detroit

Just 15 seconds have separated Gil de Ferran from three consecutive victories on Belle Isle. That is the total, combined time the Brazilian has taken the checkered flag behind the winner since 1996. Instead, the Valvoline/Cummins Honda-Reynard driver has three straight third-place finishes in Detroit.

Can he move up in Sunday's (Aug. 8) Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit? "That would be nice," admits de Ferran. "I would like to improve by two positions! That certainly is what we will be trying to achieve." Gil explained that last year's run from ninth on the grid was the most satisfying. "Every time I came into the pits, I came out one or two positions ahead of where I went in. I never drove so hard in my life."

Unlike the U.S. 500 at Michigan Speedway, where qualifying had no bearing on race results (winner Tony Kanaan started 11th), grid position -- and pit strategy -- can mean everything on the tight Motor City road course. De Ferran earned the Detroit pole in 1997 and said his pole last month on the temporary street circuit in Toronto makes him optimistic of a good setup. Robby Gordon won both the pole and race in 1995 in Walker Racing's Valvoline machine. De Ferran is seventh in the PPG Cup standings, with a win at Portland.

Naoki Hattori: " I am very excited that I am finally going back to racing after 4 months of arduous rehabilitation and training. I have been pushing myself harder and harder since I set a goal to race in Detroit two months ago. My left leg is not completely healed to its normal condition yet. However, I am pleased to know that my hard work is finally being paid off . I realize that this is just the beginning. My goal is not just going back to the race. I have been working on rehabilitation and training for winning, and I will keep working on that.

Mid-Ohio Test " At the test in Mid-Ohio last week, I drove about 500 miles in two days. That gave me confidence in my endurance level on which I have been working on lately as a part of my rehabilitation and training program. My physical condition is improving day by day, and I believe that I will be in much better physical condition in Detroit."

Derrick Walker -Team Owner: " Not the Michigan we had hoped for, we were hanging in there, unfortunately really not possible. We were too close to the edge and it did not last, hitting the fence ended our race way too early. Tough up hill battle developing with the points race now, but there are still enough races to get back on track. No more through away races! Roll on Detroit!

GIL de FERRAN # 5 Valvoline/Cummins/Walker Racing Honda Started 15th, finished 24th (not running-contact)

Gil de Ferran, who was fifth in the Championship points going into the race, crashed into the outside wall on lap 60 after running too high in the turn. De Ferran slides up the race track at turn 2 and makes hard contact with the wall coming out of turn 2. The car slides to a stop in the infield grass in the middle of the backstretch.

Gil de Ferran: "The car was a handful the first part of the race and I was working hard on staying on the lead lap. I was coming out of turn one and it stepped out on me and caused me to understeer into the gray. Then you are a passenger and that wall comes up awfully quick."

RACE REVIEW: TORONTO

What: MOLSON INDY Round Eleventh of the 20-races FedEx Championship Series for the PPG Cup

Derrick Walker -Team Owner: "Toronto, Always a great crowd and they certainly turned up in there thousands, extremely hot conditions made for a hard day for the team but great qualifying run by Gil to grab the pole, Memo continues to make excellent progress, again showing the more miles he doe's in the car the better he gets. The Race, were it not for a puncture could have seen Memo with a 5th place instead of the 12th he ended up with. Gil's race progress right on schedule up until as they say, history repeats itself, knocking into Newman Haas's tires why exiting the pit, put as to the back of the field with a penalty. Greg Moore's engine blow up caught us in the wrong place crashing on his oil.. Bitter defeat , valuable point opportunity lost, but the Good news is there is still a lot of racing to Go, don't count us out just yet.."

GIL de FERRAN Valvoline/Cummins Special Honda/Reynard/Goodyear Pole qualifier, finished 19th.

Pole qualifier Gil de Ferran fell back to second behind Franchitti at the start and ran comfortably at the front until he was penalized for striking a tire in pit lane during his second stop, then spun on fluids dropped by Greg Moore's car and retired with damage from the resulting wall contact.

Gil de Ferran: "It was a really unfortunate day for us. I didn't even feel it (the tire struck in pit lane), but we had the penalty. Then I got on the stuff from (Greg) Moore and hit the wall."

MEMO GIDLEY: # 15 Alpine - Honda/Reynard/Goodyear Started 15th, finished 12th.

Memo Gidley posted strong runs on this temporary street circuit. Gidley passed five cars to run tenth before the first round of pit stops. Memo however, had to make unscheduled second stops due to flat tires, then charged back to finish 12th.

Memo Gidley "We were going well at the beginning and moved up to sixth, I think. Then we picked up some debris a third of the way through and I had to come in to replace a cut tire. That put us in the back, and we had our work cut out for us. It was hard to make up ground after that as the track got slicker, but we fought hard and ended up back in the points. You work hard for these points!"

Gil de Ferran qualified second at 108.760 mph (58.091 seconds). He is positioned for his fourth consecutive top-three start, which includes a pole a Japan, outside pole at Cleveland and third at Portland.

GIL de FERRAN, Valvoline/Cummins Special Honda/Reynard/Goodyear: "It was a very good day for us. In the morning, we were working mostly on race setup and I was very happy with the car and confident for qualifying since the car was handling quite well. In qualifying, we were lucky to get a clear lap on each set of tires. I was a little bit disappointed that Dario was able to beat me on his second set of tires, since I had the pole on the first set, but that's what he's supposed to do. We'll see what happens tomorrow."

We dropped down to fourth early in the session. I came in (to the pits) to think about it a little bit, talked to my engineer Bill Pappas. He made a couple of changes and when I went back out the car responded very, very well. (On his pole lap) I threw caution to the wind and was lucky enough to get two clear laps, and that was, really."

MEMO GIDLEY # 15 Alpine - Honda/Reynard/Goodyear: " I didn’t really get a clean lap on my last set of tires. But really, most of it comes down to me. I’m still over-driving the car a little bit, and I also have a lot to learn about Champ Car setup on street courses. Still, the car is getting better and better, so we’ll see what happens tomorrow."

Derrick Walker -Team Owner: " Another good days racing, a 2nd an 11th place, considering the conditions was a very good result. A late engine change on Gil’s car Sunday morning, the race providing a multiple variations to deal with. Fast pit work and a unrelenting pace by Gil, Team work in action. Steady progress from Memo and dealing with the very difficult conditions, speaks to how well he is adapting to the Championship Cars."

Portland race winner de Ferran battled hard throughout the two-hour contest that started on a dry track, then rapidly became very wet as a summer storm moved through the Burke Lakefront Airport area just before the first round of scheduled pit stops. Gil then led the middle stages of the race, but was unable to keep Montoya at bay once the track dried out again. Rookie Memo Gidley brought the second Walker Racing car home 11th and got his first points on the PPG Championship.

Gil de Ferran: Started 2nd , finished 2nd: "To begin with, everything was normal. I was staying with Juan throughout the first stint, I spun once when I was still on dry tires, and killed the engine. But I was able to bump-start it again and that was a good break , but when the rain came that messed everything up. I came straight in and put wets on and went out there while it was raining. Then the car was fantastic on rain tires I was able to get past Juan and open up a gap. Unfortunately, it didn’t continue to rain. When the full-course yellow came out, we went for the restart and I just couldn’t get the tires to temperature fast enough, and Juan was gone before you could even blink. After that I was trying hard, but, it was all I could do to maintain the gap. Second is a good result for us in terms of the championship, but I have to admit I’m a little disappointed."

Memo Gidley : " Started 21st, finished 11th: "I had a good car today – really good at the start and during the first stint. Max (Papis) was actually holding me up until he pitted. When it rained, that was another new experience for me, and I just tried to get used to how the car behaves in the wet. We got some points in just our second race."

CART Winner Walker Racing Opens Door for Sponsorship Business Partners

INDIANAPOLIS (July 2, 1999) - Walker Racing, winner of the June 20 CART race in Portland, Ore., and one of the most successful teams in the CART FedEx Championship, announced today that it is seeking a business partner to replace sponsor Valvoline for 2000 and beyond.

"We've had a winning partnership with Valvoline since 1992," said team owner Derrick Walker. "It's been one of the longest-running, most productive sponsorships in motorsports. Unfortunately, Valvoline's business plans don't include primary team sponsorship in CART in 2000."

Steve Kirchner, Valvoline Vice President of Marketing, Worldwide, said the Valvoline-Walker Racing relationship had produced more than victories on the track and had led to business opportunities for the company. "Decisions such as this are never easy," said Kirchner.

"We believe this creates an excellent opportunity for other companies to come aboard a winning team that has a proven record of success with its sponsors and on the race track," said Walker.

Walker Racing and Valvoline driver Gil de Ferran are currently second in the FedEx Championship points chase. After 9 of 20 races this year, de Ferran is one of only six drivers to win a race and a pole position. The team also fields a FedEx Championship car sponsored by Alpine Electronics and driven by Memo Gidley and Naoki Hattori.

Walker Racing's competition package combines the leading engine (Honda), most successful chassis (Reynard) and Goodyear, the largest tire seller in America.
