Jai Lakshmi Mata

Lakshmi is the goddess of fortune and beauty, frequently in the later mythology identified with Sri and regarded as the wife of Vishnu is or Narayan. She sprang with other precious things from the foam of the ocean when churned by the gods and demons for the recovery of the Amrata. She appeared with a lotus in her hand, whence she is also called Padma. According to another legend she appeared at the creation floating over the water on the expanded petals of a lotus. She is also variously regarded as a wife of Surya, as a wife of Prajapati, as a wife of Dharma, and mother of Kama, as sister or mother of Dhatr and Vidhatr, as wife of Dattatreya, as one of the nine Shaktis of Vishnu, as a manifestation of Prakriti, as identified with Daksayani in Bharatasrama, and with Sita and other women. "Since the late epic period (ca. A.D. 400)," observes David Kinsley, "she has been particularly associated with the god Vishnu as his wife or consort. In this role she plays the part of a model Hindu wife, obediently serving her husband as lord. Throughout her history She has been associated with prosperity, well-being, royal power, and illustri-ousness. In many respects she is the embodiment of these qualities, and it is commonly understood that when these qualities are evident, she herself is present or reveals herself She has usually been translated as beauty when, according to Raimundo Panikkar, "it really means brilliance, the implication being that, any-thing radiant is beautiful. . . . She is glory and glory is the reciprocal ~ exchange between men and Gods. . .
