The Crystals
THE FIRST AND MOST SUCCESSFUL GIRL
GROUP IN PHIL SPECTOR`S ENTOURAGE.
THE CRYSTALS ( Patsy Wright, La La Brooks, Dee Dee Kenniebrew, Mary
Thomas and Barbara Alston) HAD A FOUR YEAR CHART RUN WITH MEMORABLE
HITS.
IT ALL STARTED IN 1961 WITH "THERE`S NO OTHER (LIKE MY BABY). THE
CRYSTALS HAD CONSECUTIVE HITS WITH SIX IN THE TOP TWENTY!
MONSTER HITS LIKE "DA DOO RON RON", "UPTOWN", "THEN HE KISSED ME",
THE POWERFUL "LITTLE BOY". ALTHOUGH NOT A HIT , IS MONSTEROUS IN ALL
IT`S "WALL OF SOUND" GLORY AND "I WONDER", ANOTHER CLASSIC WHICH WAS
ONLY RELEASED IN THE U K . ALTHOUGH THEIR BIGGEST HIT "HES A REBEL"
WENT TO NUMBER ONE, WAS RECORDED WITH DARLENE LOVE AND THE
BLOSSOMS.
IN 1963, PHIL SPECTOR RECORDED THE "A CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR YOU" LP WITH
THREE SELECTIONS BY THE CRYSTALS: "SANTA CLAUSE IS COMING TO TOWN",
"PARADE OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS"AND "RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED
REINDEER".
IN ORDER TO FILL AN OBLIGATION TO HIS CONTRACT, PHIL SPECTOR RECORDED
A "THROWAWAY " RECORD CALLED "THE SCREW" WITH THE CRYSTALS. ONLY A
HANDFULL OF COPIES WERE PRESSED AND ARE VERY RARE TO THE COLLECTOR`S
MARKET.
THE CRYSTALS LATER SIGNED WITH UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS IN 1965 BUT
FAILED TO GAIN ANY SUCCESS .
A BOOK IS IN THE PROCESS TITLED "THERE`S A STORY (I WANT YOU TO
KNOW)...
BARBARA ALSTON ALSO HAS THIS TO SAY ABOUT THE "TWIST UPTOWN " LP:
" As far as the Twist Uptown album
is concerned, from left to right is Patsy Wright, La La Brooks, Dee
Dee Kenibrew, Mary Thomas and yours truly! Phil did not buy the
station wagon. I believe our manager, Benny Wells bought that for us
because we did not like "flying". We didn`t care if it took five days
to get there, we just wanted to drive :-) We had "Crystals" written
on both sides of the wagon (maybe not at the time of the album
picture) and were very proud of that vehicle. It was truly a part of
the group. We chose our own clothing at all times. Phil never bought
anything for us , or suggested what we should wear.Dee Dee was the
main one for picking out our gowns. I`ll ask Dee Dee where the photo
was taken, I can`t remember. It was in New York , however , but where
...who knows! If I`m not mistaken, this wasn`t a major picture taking
affair. I believe we did it fairly quickly with which photographer ,
I haven`t the foggiest! I was the group romantic and dreamer. I din`t
remember the finer details, that was Dee Dee`s forte! I`m the one that
was forever in love , forever dreaming, forever asking questions. I
wanted to know everything about everybody I met. I tried to get to
know people for who they were in the little time we had together.
Thats why I have a lot of stories to tell ! As a matter of fact, the
name of the book will be "There`s A Story (I want you to
know)."
