Once upon a time, I fell in love---
or, so I told myself.
He was an obsession with me,
our time together a roller coaster ride,
of agony and ecstasy.
Soul searing passion I'd never known before,
coupled with insecurity, and doubt.

He avowed a love his actions denied,
and although my eyes were blind,
my ears closed to that I didn't wish to hear,
my heart knew the truth---
and a part of me always longed
for freedom from the pain---from him.

Finding the courage to break away
I swore never again
would I give anyone the power
to hurt me that badly---
I'd guard this tender heart!

But, then I met you---
You walked through my defenses
as if they weren't there,
taking a scarred, still bleeding heart
into your safe-keeping,
to nurture, protect, and heal.
It's yours, now, and I know it safe!

You are my rock,
my fortress in life's storms,
your love for me as sure as the tides,
the sun's rising and setting.

Once upon a time I told myself I loved.
But I never knew what love was
until I was loved by you.

"If you press me to say why I loved him, I can say no more than...because he was he, and I was I."
