Bands From a Former Life
These are the all the bands I played with that I can remember. I have since retired from
playing in bands and now perform as a singer/songwriter with The World Leaders or with my
electronica project great unwashed luminaries.
Mental Masturbation (1990) – Nashville, TN
Brian Zonn (vox/guitar); Alanna Rocklin (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- This band played almost all covers for several parties. I had no drumset so I borrowed
what I could. Alanna was a fine bass player. Brian was an over-the-top metal
shredmaster. My brother dubbed him Lickman. Everyone has to start somewhere, and this
was my shaky start. Who knows what Alanna’s doing now. The last I heard Brian was a
hired gun out of Nashville.
- RECORDINGS: None exist, thankfully.
Primal Urge (1990-1991) – Nashville, TN
Jason Krekel (guitar); Jason Doggett (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- Mostly an instrumental band. Kinda groovy, kinda heavy and dark. Didn’t have enough
time for it to develop into what it could have. Jason Krekel has become an accomplished
bluegrass guitarist. You wouldn’t have known he had it in him. This band was kinda
jammy in a Primus and Black Sabbath way.
- RECORDINGS: There was one rehearsal cassette I had but it is long gone.
K.N.O.T. (1991) – Owensboro, KY
John Byrne (vox/keys); John ? (guitar); Will Bridewell (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- We might have been together for a month. We didn’t get much past covering The Cure’s
“Close To Me” and Material Issue’s “Diane.” Still, was the first time I played with a
band on my own drums.
- RECORDINGS: There may have been a rehearsal tape. Even if so I don’t have it anymore.
Skullywonka / Smaug (1991-1992) - Owensboro, KY
Sheridan Kenny (vox, guitar); Derek Schartung (guitar); Jeremy Young (bass); Kelly
Minnis (drums)
- A weird band. Sorta grunge, sorta post-punk, sorta metal and kinda beat. Sheridan was
a smart guy with a good record and book collection but he really couldn’t sing. Jeremy
was a bass hobbyist at best. Derek was a fine guitarist with a good ear and was a good
friend to me at the time. My first serious band.
- RECORDINGS: I think we taped rehearsals and one live show in Derek’s garage but I don’t
have any of those.
Ashes To Ashes (1991-1994) – Owensboro, KY
Mike Hagerman (vox/guitar/keys); Brian Snyder (vox/bass); Elvis ? (guitar); David ?
(guitar); Mark ? (guitar/vox); Matt Gray (keys/vox); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- My first foray into playing country and gospel. I really liked both Mike and Brian and
enjoyed making music with them. Both were into rock as much as country and they were
influenced as much by .38 Special and Billy Joel as well as Garth Brooks. We went
through a series of guitarists with the sound getting progressively more rock than
country. After the band broke up I still made the occasional recording date with Brian
and even tried him out for another band in Bowling Green I was in during college.
- RECORDINGS: We played a cable-access TV show and video exists of that. There is also a
soundboard cassette of a performance at Goldie’s Grand Ol’ Opry House in Owensboro. We
also did a series of four-track recordings and Brian and I did two studio sessions at Joel
Osborne’s loft studio. I have none of these but I bet Mike and/or Brian do.
Digging Judy / Glue (1992) – Owensboro, KY
Derek Schartung (guitar/vox); Aaron May (vox/bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- When Sheridan left Owensboro to move to Memphis, Jeremy stopped showing up for Smaug
practice. Aaron May stepped in and Glue became a real band. We had original songs,
played live a lot and were somewhat popular. In the wake of grunge Owensboro picked up a
few all-ages teen clubs so as long as those existed then we had a place to play. Grunge
was the operative word but we didn’t really sound like those bands. Derek was still very
Metallica-influenced even if he swore he loved Sonic Youth. Aaron though was a great
vocalist and did the Lou Barlow bass thing very well.
- RECORDINGS: Judy’s Garden EP (four-track recording;) Live at Ron’s MOB cassette;
two unreleased four-track sessions (one I have, who knows about the other); and a
soundboard cassette of our performance at Earth Day 1992 (which I also no longer have.)
120 Days (1992-1993) – Owensboro, KY
Sherry Grant (vox/guitar/keys); Josh Wardrip (guitar); Aaron May (bass;) Jeremy Young
(bass/tapes); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- I met Josh after his band Kuru Ama played the Earth Day 1992 show and he was into all
the prog rock and shoegazer stuff I was into. We formed a band at first with Jeremy
Young on bass and Josh on vox but Jeremy really wasn’t a good enough bassist to play the
music. We also tried out Will Bridewell but he couldn’t do it either. Then I introduced
Josh to Sherry (who I met through a friend in the KWC drama department) and sparks flew.
Josh wrote the music, I wrote the words and Aaron May came on board. We never played a
show but practiced a lot. Atmospheric, dark alterna-prog. Would’ve grown into a great
band. But Josh and Sherry became in item and then broke up, which basically broke up the
band.
- RECORDINGS: Josh and I four-tracked a song called "Face." I think Josh also taped a
rehearsal and did a few guitar-only demos for me to write lyrics to. I only have "Face."
Thingfish (1993) – Owensboro, KY
Josh Wardrip (guitar); John Atkinson (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- A pick-up jam band for a performance at the Earth Day 1993 gig. Apparently my old
friend Scotty G. videotaped this show, but I don't have it nor ever saw it. It was cool
to play, albeit briefly, with John Atkinson, one of the few people I knew in town who were
into fusion besides me.
Griswald (1993) – Owensboro, KY
Brian ? (vox); Check Ray (guitar); Bill Sewell (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- I played with these guys for maybe three months. Brian and Check were metal dudes
trying to get into the grunge thing. It was unsuccessful. Though it was cool to play
with Bill, who was one of my brother’s best friends in high school (we worked together at
the RiverPark Centre.)
- RECORDINGS: I think we recorded a practice once but I don't have the tape
The Dashing Skull Club (1994) – Owensboro, KY
Jeff Vineyard (vox); Todd Maszaros (guitar); Larry Cook (guitar); Beetle (bass); Cody
Yeiser (congas/trombone); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- A very strange band. Too many influences distilled into one group. Like a hippie jam
band influenced by They Might Be Giants and The Pixies.
- RECORDINGS: Motorcycle cassette (recorded at Joel Osborne’s loft studio).
Gepetto’s Fetish (1994) – Owensboro, KY
Christian Davis (vox/guitar); Aaron King (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- My foray into Helmet territory. Odd time signatures, drop-D tunings, etc. I played
with these guys for a hot minute. Even lived in Aaron’s living room for a time. Aaron
and I used to skateboard together back in the day.
- RECORDINGS: A live video exists of our performance at the 1994 Battle of the Bands at
the Sportscenter but I don’t have it.
Other People (1994) – Bowling Green, KY
Drew Brown (vox/guitar); Kelly Salmon (guitar); Chris Knox (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- A jammy original rock band. My college roommate Drew brought me in because he didn’t
like their drummer Brian (who still lived in Owensboro) but the other two guys liked Brian
instead of me. So I wound up practicing with them and playing one gig.
- RECORDINGS: None exist of the band with me.
Public Opinion (1994) – Bowling Green, KY
I don’t remember the guys’ names
- It was an all instrumental prog-rock band. Never really got past the rehearsal stage.
The Guild (1995) – Bowling Green, KY
Adam Pawlowski (vox/guitar); Dan Dilamarter (vox/guitar); Patrick O’Rourke (bass); Kelly
Minnis (drums)
- My first “professional” band. These guys had a record out recorded in Nashville with a
respectable producer and were playing shows all over the Southeast. I joined them right
as their album Klaus Doesn’t Live Here Anymore came out. A few months after I
joined Patrick went off to college in Louisville. We tried two bassists that didn’t
really work and Dan and Adam did not like each other. So, the guys split up. Adam wanted
to form another band with me but I wound up going off with Dan and Patrick. The music was
a combination of REM/Spin Doctors pop from Adam and Widespread Panic/Dead type songs.
- RECORDINGS: There are a couple of rehearsal and live recordings I’m on, including a
videotape of a performance at Gary’s in Bowling Green that I have.
Blue Harvest (1995) – Bowling Green, KY
Jamie ? (vox/bass); someone on guitar; Kelly Minnis (drums)
- A one-off punk band for an outdoor festival I put together at college. No recordings
exist of the one show, though the whole event was broadcasted on college radio so a tape
could exist.
-
Life O’Reilly (1995-1996) – Bowling Green, KY
Dan Dilamarter (vox/guitar); Patrick O’Rourke (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums)
- When The Guild broke up Dan, Patrick and I decided to form a band based around Dan’s
Guild songs plus a few new ones. We continued more in Dan’s vein, playing some acoustic
shows but never any big club dates. I quit to join another band and they continued on
with two other guys.
- RECORDINGS: We recorded one rehearsal but I don't have that tape anymore.
See Rock City (1996-1997) – Bowling Green, KY
Jason Clark (vox/guitar); Troy Brown (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums/vox)
- The best band I’ve ever been in. Maybe not the best live but certainly the most
creative atmosphere I’ve ever been in. I was encouraged to learn to play guitar, write
songs and sing them. Without Jason Clark I would not be the musician I am today. Oh
yeah, we played power pop-informed indie rock. We occasionally dabbled in electronic pop
too.
- RECORDINGS: See Rock City CD (1996); Eiffel Towering Inferno CD (1996);
"Sunday Driver" on Warren County Plug compilation CD (1997); Modern Angel
Mascot 2CD (1997;) 20,000 Leagues Under Me CD (1997)
Vast Massive Satellite (1997-????) – The U.S. Postal Service
Jason Clark (vox/guitar/bass/keys/programming); Marigold Clark (vox/bass/clarinet);
Kelly Minnis (vox/guitar/bass/keys/drums/programming)
- When I moved away from Bowling Green Jay decided to disband See Rock City and make
records with me through the mail as VMS. So we collaborated that way until August 2006,
when I moved 90 minutes away from Jason. We then put together a live version of the band
and worked on a ton of recordings. Hard rock, electronic pop, folk lullabies, gothic
trance, power pop, etc. Whatever we felt like doing we did. Except I didn't really feel
like being in anyone's band anymore. I really wanted to do my own thing. So I left in
May 2007, but now I'm working with VMS again in a more limited capacity.
- RECORDINGS: "When You Figure It Out" on Hydroponic Mascara vol. 1 compilation 7"
(1997); Patron Saint Strike CD (1997); Planetarium CD (1998); Bend
Sinister CD (1999); "Blue Suburban Skies" on Hydroponic Mascara vol. 2
compilation CD (1999); Over In the Infinite CD (2000); Robot CD (2001);
Tomorrow Today EP (2001); "The Brainwashing Trust" on Ball of Wax 5
compilation CD (2006); The Host EP (2006); The Last Laugh of the Here-After
(2007); Mr. California EP (2007)
Dorothy and the Tin Men (1998) – Grants Pass, OR
I don’t remember the band members’ names. Girl singer; bass-playing husband; keyboard-
playing dad and me
- I found this band through the Internet. Couldn’t find anyone else to play with in
Ashland, OR so I jumped at the first band I could find and it was a mistake. The music
was kinda power-pop without guitars, but the singer wasn’t great. The keyboardist though
was stellar and had lots of nice vintage keys.
- RECORDINGS: We started making an album but it wasn’t finished before I moved.
Victory Lap (1999-2001) – Seattle, WA
Mike Collins (vox/guitars); Pete Hilgendorf (guitar/vox); Beaux Bartron (guitar/vox);
Dan Leary (bass); Rob Baughman (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums/vox)
- My friend Rob and I put an ad out in The Stranger looking to form a rockin’ power
pop band. The same day our ad published we saw an ad from a guy into the Replacements,
Wilco and The Posies. Sounded promising so I answered the ad. It was Mike Collins, a
one-man band from Norman, OK. I met him and listened to his songs, a kind of Gin
Blossoms-Tommy Keene Midwestern power pop. The first person to answer my ad was
Minneapolis Pete Hilgendorf, the world’s biggest ‘Mats fan. So off we went. But Rob
turned out to not be that great a bassist so he was replaced with Thunder Dan Leary, a
great rock bass player. We played shows and practiced a lot, but Pete was tired of being
micro-managed so he quit right before VL began making an album. We continued as a trio
for awhile and then picked up Dan’s friend Beaux Batron on guitar. But Mike was tiring
of playing with guys who dumbed down and rocked up his jangly power-pop. So he broke the
band up on the eve of releasing the album with help from Not Lame Recordings.
- RECORDINGS: Our Lady of Perpetual Motion CD (2001;) one live recording from the
Crocodile Café, Seattle 2/00 plus various Mike solo demos.
- I have talked to Bruce Brodeen about eventually releasing this EP in limited quantities
but I have heard very little about that possibility since early 2008.
The Daughters of Joy (1999-2004) – Seattle, WA
Brenda Scallon (vox/guitar); Kelly Minnis (drums); and whoever else showed up!
- Brenda’s band is a kind of art project. She plays with whomever shows up for practice
and shows and is a free spirit about maintaining a band. I played with her off-and-on
while I lived in the Seattle area. Jon Ulrigg played bass with us for my first year in
the band. Most recently the DOJ has included Brenda’s husband Tim on bass, Brenda's first
bassist Melynn and a horn section. Brenda’s voice is a lot like Chrissy Hynde’s but her
songwriting is really all over the place. Funky, rock, folky, jazzy, and sometimes all
the above in the space of a three-minute song.
- RECORDINGS: In a Sense CD (2004 - I share duties on this album with two or
three other drummers); live recording of the record release party; "Everybody Is a Fucking
Liar" on Second Time Around: A Dear23 Tribute To the Posies compilation CD (2006);
and "Compliment" on Beautiful Escape Posies Tribute compilation CD (2008)
Steprocket (2000) – Seattle, WA
Chris Gillette (vox/guitar); Dan Cohen (guitar); Jon Croft (guitar); Richard ? (bass);
Kelly Minnis (drums/vox)
- My first of two bands with Chris, and the beginning of a long musical relationship with
Jon. Steprocket played rockin’ country with great songwriting. Chris’s voice reminded me
a lot of a grungier Travis Tritt. Great songs, and I enjoyed playing them. I joined this
band as a side project and quit after six months to prepare for the birth of my first
child.
- RECORDINGS: Steprocket CD (2000) an unreleased album I’m not on; Live At the
Tractor Tavern CD (a professional multi-track recording of a great live show); a show
at the Crocodile I taped from the board.
Hailee (2001-2002) – Seattle, WA
Chris Gillette (vox/guitar); Jon Croft (guitar); Dan Leary (bass); Kelly Minnis (drums/
vox)
- About six months after I quit Steprocket Chris broke up the band with the idea of
turning his sound more towards a redneck AC/DC. I was game to get back on board and I
brought along Thunder Dan. We spent the next year mining our 1980’s record collections
to blend AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Cult and Drivin’ N Cryin’ into the Hailee sound.
Chris wound up moving away to Montana so we reluctantly folded the band.
- RECORDINGS: Burn It Down CD (unreleased;) a live board recording from I-Spy.
Vegas In Flames (2001-2003) – Seattle, WA
Jon Croft (vox/guitar); Heather Croft (vox/guitar); Art? (bass); Mark Schlipper (bass);
Kelly Minnis (drums/vox)
- Shortly before Hailee broke up I joined Jon Croft’s side project with his wife. A kind
of indie–postpunk band. We jammed out some songs, and then Art stopped showing up for
practice. We added my friend Mark to the lineup just in time to play our first two shows.
But Mark didn’t really like the music so he quit and Art showed back up. We settled into
writing and recording songs inspired by The Chameleons, Throwing Muses and Low. I thought
we made a great record. But apparently Art (who was Heather’s sister’s ex-husband)
disliked my playing and used my temporary lack of time due to my second son’s birth as an
excuse to push me out. The band demanded I make more time for the band so I quit.
Bummer. I loved the music.
- RECORDINGS: various live and rehearsal recordings; To Spite the World CD
(Unsmashable Records 2003)
The Capillaries (2003) – Seattle, WA
Matt Southworth (vox/guitar); Jon Wooster (bass/vox); Kelly Minnis (drums/vox)
- I met Matt on the Internet. When Matt moved from L.A. to Seattle I joined his band. He
added Jon, another singer/songwriter, to bass (though Jon had never played bass.) We
played some shows, recorded and such. But I wasn’t digging the music as much and was more
dedicated to playing VIF. So when my second son was born I quit the Caps. Matt has gone
onto replace Jon and become much more successful. Oh yeah, while I was in the band Matt
couldn’t decide whether he wanted to be Elliott Smith or Rivers Cuomo. After I quit he
split the difference and The Caps became Superdrag NW.
- RECORDINGS: Daylight Savings and Overnight Lows CD (2003)
The Luna Moth (2003-2006) – Seattle, WA
Mark Schlipper (guitar/vox); Levi Fuller (bass/banjo/saw/vox); Kelly Minnis (drums/keys/
vox)
- The week after I quit VIF I formed the Moth with ex-VIF bassist and good friend Mark.
He had just met Levi online and we got together to see what would happen. Mostly-
instrumental heavily-dynamic trance post-rock is what happened. I didn’t like the music
at first because I was so used to playing songs. But then I began to enjoy the music.
And I got to play drums and keys at the same time. Time constraints of being a Dad and
working and all forced me to quit in 2005 but I still came back for the occasional gig up
until I left Seattle.
- RECORDINGS: The Compass That Only Points East CD (2004); XM Sessions CD
(2004); various rehearsal and live recordings including a DVD of my last Luna Moth show.
Levi Fuller & The Library (2004-2006)
Levi Fuller (vox/guitar); Gavin Gregory (keyboards, vox); James Nixon (bass); Kelly
Minnis (drums)
- I began to play with Luna Moth bassist Levi’s main band after his drummer (and Luna
Moth album engineer Casey Alexander) left Levi’s band to focus on his main project
Wesafari. Levi and I rehearsed as a duo throughout the first half of 2004 until we picked
up James (from National Red) and Gavin (from water Kill the Sun.) When I left Seattle
Casey came back for awhile but then left. If you live in Seattle and you are a drummer
into Califone and Wilco let me know.
- RECORDINGS: There are several live and rehearsal recordings that exist with me.
Argo (2005-2008)
Justin (vox/guitar); Matt (guitar/keys/vox); Jon Wooster (bass/vox); Kelly Minnis
(occasional drummer)
- I filled in with Argo on the occasions when their drummer couldn't make a gig. I did
this at first mainly as a favor to their bassist good ol' Jon Woo (former bandmate in The
Capillaries and one of my best friends) but then I began to really like the music.
Finally, when that drummer was kicked out of the band, they found themselves in need of
recording over that drummer's parts for their EP they were recording (and just released
in October 2006.) Since I had a history with the band I was the person they called. In a
matter of hours one Saturday afternoon I replaced those drum tracks. In 2008 I played a
mini-reunion tour of the NW with Argo.
- RECORDINGS: Attack of the Firebots (Anathem Records 2006); two other EP's and an
album without me.
The Ravines (2007-?)
John Krajicek (vox/guitar); Mike Bender (bass); me (drums)
- I began to fill-in for The Ravines' drummer in December 2007. Their drummer live two
hours away and can't always make shows, so that's where I come in.
- RECORDINGS: Two albums without me.
Before The Mast (2008)
David Johnson (vox/guitar); Matt Shea (bass); me (drums)
- I answered David's Craigslist ad in December 2007 and we talked a long time about
playing together. David didn't have an amp so we had to wait until he could buy one. While
one day casually mentioning this to my friend Matt (of Atarimatt and The Hangouts fame) he
offered to loan us an amp, provided we let him play bass with us. Heck, I'd have been happy
to have Matt in the band regardless of the loan! We have a few practices under our belts
and four originals. We hope to debut the band live this August.
- RECORDINGS: The Before the Mast EP on Sinkhole Texas Inc., as well as some
rehearsal recordings.
The Ex-Optimists (2008-present)
Kelly Minnis (vox/guitar); Michael Scarborough (guitar); Jessica Kempen (drums)
- For the first time ever I'm fronting my own band, a scrappy early '90s sort of indie
rock thing. First show is in November 2008.
Magic Girl (2008-present)
Mary Charlotte Young (vocals/acoustic guitar); Michael Scarborough (electric guitar); Marty
Duram (fretless bass); me (drums)
- My friend Atarimatt requested I join Mary Charlotte to record her first album with band
backing, so I rehearsed with her and sometimes Marty and Michael in preparations for the
recording. At some point once the album is out I will back her up on occasion.
- RECORDINGS: Poor Man's Queen EP, forthcoming on Sinkhole Texas Inc., plus a full-
band rehearsal at Matt's place.
INSTRUMENTS
DRUM SETS
1. 1960’s Slingerlands in yellow agate wrap 1991-1992 (13/16/20). No bottom heads and
the floor tom was out of round. These drums were awful, but everyone's gotta start somehow.
2. 1960’S Sonor Internationals in blue/green satin wrap 1992-1995 (13/16/20). No bottom
heads on the toms. Tubby and boomy. Would love to have these back someday.
3. 1960’s Rogers in red agate wrap 1994 (12/14/18). No bottom heads on the toms and the
wrap was cracking.
4. 1980’s Yamaha Stage Customs in black wrap 1995-2000 (13/14/16/18/24). Sold the 14 and
18 to my friend Cody. My first semi-professional kit.
5. 1990’s Yamaha Maple Customs in turquoise lacquer 2000-2001(10/12/13/16/22). My first
professional kit. Purchased from Darius Minwalla, drummer for The Posies and Jon Auer. The
toms were fantastic but the kick was kinda boring.
6. 1990’s Fibes maple in turquoise sparkle wrap 2001-2007 (12/13/16/24 & matching snare).
Purchased from Mike Derosier, former drummer for Heart. Best drums I've ever owned. Toms
were really full and throaty, kick drum was really wild and boomy (though the kick didn't
record very well).
8. 1990’s Pearl BRX’s in black lacquer 2003-2004 (12/15/18). Kit was assembled from
orphaned toms. My first second kit, meaning I used it for quieter gigs and left the loud
ones at home. They was too quiet though.
9. 1980’s Yamaha Tour Customs in black wrap 2007-present (12/13/16/20). Downsized from
the Fibes due to decrease in playing time. The 25+ year old combo of birch and mahogany
is really full with lots of low end but punchy too. Really liking these drums.
SNARE DRUMS
1. 1990’s Mapex steel 13x4 (1991-1992). Given to me by my big brother. Traded for #2.
2. 1960’s Apollo mahogany 14x6.5 w/rings (1992-1993). Like a dummy, I put a Kevlar head
on it. When I broke the Falams head it cracked the drum shell.
3. 1990’s Pearl brass 13x3 (1993-1994). Tired of having to mail-order piccolo parts so I
traded it for #4.
4. 1970’s Ludwig Acrolite aluminum 14x5 (1994). Traded for #5.
5. 1960’s Ludwig Supraphonic aluminum 14x6.5 (1994-2000). My biggest drum regret is
selling this snare. But the tension rods backed out like crazy and I thought I wanted
brass.
6. 1990’s Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute 14x6 in plum lacquer (2000-2001).
7. 2000’s Pearl Sensitone brass 14x5.5 (2001-2002).
8. 1980’s Pearl Freefloater maple 14x8 (2001-2005). I miss this drum. Affectionately
nicknamed "The Terminator."
9. 1990’s Fibes maple 14x5 in turquoise sparkle wrap (2002-2005).
10. 1990’s Pearl Sensitone brass 14x6.5 (2003-2004).
11. 2000’s Ludwig Supraphonic aluminum 14x5.5 (2004-2004).
12. 1990’s Ludwig Acrolite “blacrolite” aluminum 14x5 (2005-present).
13. 1950’s WFL mahogany marching snare 15x12 (2005).
14. 1970's Ludwig maple marching snare 14x10 (2007).
