The Rim Jhim band was based in the Washington, DC area and was founded in 1992 by Mansur with a particular focus: to ensure that we perform songs that will appeal to people of all ages. We therefore perform "old" songs but with contemporary Western music and beat patterns.

As humans, we are fond of nostalgia. Singing "old" songs is important not only for our own enjoyment but also for others who grew up with these songs.

Recently, the Indian sub-continent has been swept by the growth of Bangla, Hindi and Urdu "pop bands" who are bringing about a wave of change in the manner musical entertainment is provided in our culture. These bands are very popular with younger people who are mesmerized by the electricity of the music and the use of Western instruments and beats. It is important for us to provide electrified music with our songs.

We were serving two purposes: 1) people are being exposed to the lyrically rich "old" songs from the Indian sub-continent, some made as far back as the 1930s, 2) we were able to provide nostalgic reminisces to people who are familiar with these songs. In other words, we tried to be a source of fun for everyone.

We used a lot of MIDI techniques and rhythm programming in our music. This kept our band equipment portable, specially if we had to travel out of town. It also allowed us to create rich music without requiring a lot of hard-to-find musicians.

While our membership had changed from time to time, as people moved out of the area or went on to pursue other interests, our focus and the style of music had remained the same.

The last members used to be:

Mansur - Lead Male Vocals, Song Adaptation and Music
Rupa - Lead Female Vocals & Song Quality Control
Dorothy - Percussions & Background Vocals
Gina - Keyboards

Rim Jhim specialized in providing entertainment for weddings and parties by performing romantic duets that are fun to dance with. The first Rim Jhim concert, Harano Sur, was held in the winter of 1994. Since then Rim Jhim has performed numerous times around the United States. Rim Jhim's album of 12 Bangla remakes called Harano Ganer Notun Porichoy was received very well by lovers of modern Bangla music. As all good things must change -- Rim Jhim is no longer performing together as a band. Rupa has continued to sing and entertain listeners in the Washington DC area. Mansur is now a Real Estate Agent with Long and Foster -- helping people buy and sell homes in Maryland.
