The word root of a medical term usually indicates the tissue, organ, or body system that is involved. The following Word Roots Table will illustrate some of the common word roots.
The Prefix is attached to the beginning of a word and can never stand alone. It is placed before verbs, nouns, and adjectives to change or modify their meanings. The following Table will illustrate some of the Common Pre Hospital Prefixes.
The Suffix is sometimes referred to as the terminal element or as the word ending. The Suffix attaches to the end of a word and like the Prefix, can never stand alone. A word can have it's entire meaning changed by replacing one Suffix with another. The Suffix is added to the Word Root to change or modify it's meaning. The below Table will illustrate some these Suffixes.
Combining Form is a word root followed by a vowel to facilitate pronunciation. It combines a word root with a suffix or other root. The combining form is used to build a compound word.
