Jamila's Biography

"The greatest power I have over my own life is my ability for self-definition--to know who I am by learning where I came from and where I have been."

Named after Muhammed Ali's first daughter, Jamila Wideman was born to John Edgar and Judy Wideman on October 16, 1975 in Denver, Colorado. She attended Amherst Regional High School in Amherst, Massachussetts where her high school team was the subject of the book In These Girls, Hope is a Muscle, by Madeleine Blais.

Jamila was an all-round athlete at Amherst Regional, also a javeline, 100 meter and 400 meter champion in track and field. She also carried a 3.6 GPA and was a National Honor Society member. She was named the starting point guard at Stanford in her freshman year, an unprecedented role with the Cardinal, and led Stanford to the final four three years in a row, never, though, achieving a national title. She was drafted in the first round (third overall) by the Sparks in the 1997 WNBA draft, and started only half of the Sparks' 1997 games. In-depth biographical information on Jamila is available in the pieces on the articles page.
