 PORTSMOUTH - The Rev. Earl Walter Freeland Sr., 90, of the 600 block of Susan St., died Aug. 10, 2006, in Portsmouth. A native of Cunningham, W.Va., he retired from the Portsmouth Alliance Church after 32 years. The Rev. Freeland was a pastor in the Christian and Missionary Alliance denomination for a total of 48 years, was a chaplain at Cradock High School and coached children’s softball.

 Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Freda Pauline Freeland; two sons, James L. Freeland and wife Judy of Clearfield, Pa., and John R. Freeland and wife Kathy of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a loving church family; daughter-in-law, Joyce Freeland of Hampton; and son-in-law, James Vandervort of Somerset, Pa. He was predeceased by a son, Earl W. Freeland Jr. and a daughter, Barbara J. Vandervort.

 A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Alliance Church by Pastor Palmer Zerbe. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Alliance Christian High School or the Alliance Church.
