Our Matinee Idol

~~~
It was March 9th, 1999, and my mom and I drove down to Bloor and Spadina for Rufus'
performance at Trinity St-Paul's. At first, we were standing in the line for
homeless people who were waiting for food, but then when we went around to the
back of the church, there was a small lobby where me, my mom and about 30 other
people stood. I saw people with flowers (from the mailing list), as well as some
families, and even some gay couples. It was an assortment of people.
~~~
I stood in this 'mob' with a lady who has seen Rufus many times before. She was cool!
Anyways, we stood there for about an hour and a half, and more and more people kept
coming and cramping themselves into this little lobby. Finally, they told us all to
go line up outside, but of course no one moves.
We finally got people to go outside, and I ended up on the stairs, in the second
row (for those of you who went, you'll
understand). I was about 15th in line... Out of about 500!!
~~~
At 15 after 7, they started to let us in. My mom and I, as well as Shona and Isla
(two girls that I met there) ran to the front.
We ended up sitting 6th row, in the middle, on the left. We had great seats, and
even with Rufus sitting at his piano, we could still see his face.
Imogen Heap opened for Rufus, and she was amazing. I would probably call her
a physchotic version of Jewel!
The playing list was as follows:
~~~
Danny Boy
Matinee Idol
Damned Ladies
California
In My Arms
April Fools
Rainbow Crossing
Baby
Millbrook
Imaginary Love
Barcelona
Beauty Mark
Foolish Love
----------
Sally Ann
Do You Love An Apple
Little Sister
~~~
Rufus said a lot of funny things during the performance.
Like, at the starting, when he sat down on his piano bench, and it collapsed
from underneath him, and said 'That's Love'
Or how about his constant comments on how cute his double bass player, Jeff Hill was.
He kept forgetting that he was in church!
~~~
Guess what he was wearing?! Rufus came out on stage wearing an adorable little outfit which
included blue crushed velvet pants, a peach t-shirt with the face of a chihuahua
on it, with "Chihuahua" written on it, a brown long-sleeved shirt with
flowers stitched onto it along the collar, pockets and cuffs, and, a
great pair of saddle shoes. Cool eh?
~~~
Anyway, that my story about the concert, but you have yet to hear about what happened
AFTER! Sloan was there, so a lot of people were busy getting their autographs, but
from where I was standing, in another mob of people, I could see Rufus backstage
smoking a cigarette. The roady kept telling us how he probably wouldn't come out,
but not to give up. So we stood there, and stood there, and FINALLY after about 45 minutes
he came out! I was so excited, and can't believe that I could actually speak!
I got his autograph, I got a hug, I gave him a bracelet that I made for him! My mom took our
picture, and you can see it below!
So, that's my story. If you can, go see Rufus live!
