Titanic, Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera
TITANIC begins (Prologue) as Thomas Andrews, the architect of the great ship, pores over the
blueprints of his design (in Every Age). The curtain then rises to reveal the Ocean Dock in Southampton,
England, where people are gathering to wonder at and to board the ship on sailing day: first a stoker (How
Did They Build Titanic?), then additional crewmen (There She Is), officers and stevedores (Loading
Inventory), the owner, the architect and the captain (The Largest Moving Object), the Third and
Second Class passengers (I Must Get On That Ship), and finally the First Class passengers (The 1st
Class Roster). Now fully boarded, the ship pulls out as the company sings a prayerful farewell
(Godspeed Titanic).
One by one, the dreams and aspirations of key characters are presented: Barrett, the stoker who wanted to
get away from the coal mines (Barrett's Song); Murdoch, the ship's officer contemplating the
responsibility of command (To Be a Captain); Kate McGowan and the Third Class passengers who
yearn for a better life in America (Lady's Maid); Chief Steward Etches and the millionaires he serves
who exult in the wonders of their world (What a Remarkable Age This Is!).
Barrett finds his way to the Telegraph Room where he dictates a proposal of marriage to his sweetheart
back home (The Proposal) in a telegram transmitted by Harold Bride, a young telegraph operator smitten
with the possibilities of the new radio technology (The Night Was Alive).
The next day, April 14, after Sunday morning church service, the First Class attends the shipboard band's
spirited out-of-doors dance-concert (Hymn/Doing the Latest Rag), an exclusive event crashed by
Second Class passenger Alice Beane, a hardware store owners wife who wants more out of life (I Have
Danced). That evening, as Fleet the lookout scans the horizon (No Moon) and bandsman Hartley regales
the First Class Smoking Room with a new song (Autumn), the ship sails inexorably towards her collision,
which ends Act One.
Act Two opens as the suddenly awakened First and Second Class passengers are assembled in the Grand
Salon (Dressed in Your Pajamas in the Grand Salon) for life-belt instruction by Chief Steward Etches,
before being sent up to the Boat Deck to board the lifeboats. In the Telegraph Room, Captain Smith, Mr.
Andrews and Mr. Ismay, the owner, argue over who is responsible for the disaster (The Blame) while
Mr. Bride tirelessly sends out the S.O.S.. Up on the Boat Deck, the male passengers are separated from
their families (To the Lifeboats), and all express hopes of being reunited (We'll Meet Tomorrow) as the
final boat is lowered. Isidor Straus (the owner of Macy's) and his wife Ida remain behind together, as she
refuses to leave his side after 40 years of marriage (Still) and Mr. Etches utters a prayer (To Be a
Captain reprise). In the abandoned Smoking Room, Thomas Andrews desperately redesigns his ship to
correct its fatal flaws until the futility of his actions leads him to predict in horrifying detail, the end of
Titanic just as she begins her now-inevitable descent (Mr. Andrews' Vision).
In an Epilogue, the survivors picked up by the Carpathia numbly retell what had once been Mr. Andrews'
dream (In Every Age reprise). The living are joined by their lost loved-ones in a tableau recapturing the
optimistic spirit of the Ocean Dock on sailing day (Finale).
Titanic is... well the story of a ship sinking. This show is nothing like the movie, like I mean there is no Jack and Rose running around. The show is very true to the actual sinking, except for the part when everyone sings as the ship goes down. Here is the synopsis from the CD booklet.
Well like Chicago I have not seen this show, but I have heard the music. The music is pretty good. It has some good songs, but on the whole nothing that really stand out except for the opening number when they are all boarding the ship. I have seen some of their numbers performed on the Tonys and on Rosie and must say it's cool, it looks good. I am curious how they show the ship sinking, and when I eventually see it I hope it's not corny, 'cause that would ruin it. As for the singing, well it's pretty good too. I hafta say that I like the fact that there are no 'main characters' in this show, it is a ensemble effort, which I always love to see. I hope that I will get the chance to see this show as it sounds great, and Rosie loves it and that's enough for me! :)
Titanic is currently on Broadway and will soon be touring to Los Angeles and Boston. I hope they come here soon. At the 1997 Tony Awards Titanic proved all the reviewers who bashed it wrong. They swept the awards collecting such honors as "Best Musical." The music is really great and I can hardly wait until I can see this, I guess what I am trying to say is... BRING TITANIC TO VANCOUVER YOU BASTARDS!!! :) Was that a nice way of saying it? Les Miserables is one of the neatest musicals I have seen in a long time. It is about one man's life, Jean Valjean, and how he is in jail for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family. It shows his rise to power and how one man, Javert, follows him the entire time. You see Valjean has skipped his parole. Valjean meets many characters along the way, including Fantine, a girl who dies and leaves her daughter, Cosette, in Valjean's care. He finds that Cosette lives with the Thenardier's and their daughter, Eponine. Thenardier has his own hotel and considers himself "Master of the House." Cosette grows up and the French Student Revolution begins, she meets Marius and falls in love. The revolution takes up much of the second half, and I won't ruin what happens for you. The show was written by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil who also wrote Miss Saigon. The music for this show is excellent, memorable and definiteley worth listening to. It's awesome.
Well, I definitely enjoyed Les Miserables. Going into the show I had a kind of idea of what to expect as I had heard some of the music, but I was not quite sure what would happen. It was one of the best shows I have seen (probably third) on my list. It was so good. The songs were great and had been humming them for weeks after. My favourite songs include Bring Him Home, Stars, and of course- Master of the House. For any of you who have seen the show you will understand what I mean when I say if I could play any character it would definiteley be Thenardier, it is the best role in the show. Second would be Javert, if I had the voice. The song "Stars" is one of the most beautifully written songs I have ever heard in my life. In fact most of the music in the show is excellent. It has great solo numbers, duets (A Little Fall of Rain), and mass production numbers. Also good characters were Eponine, Gavorche and Mrs. Thenardier (Raise it up the master's ass!)
Les Miserables, as I have said, was one of my top three favourites. I hope one day that I can perform Master of the House, I think I am goign to next year. The only thing that I was dissapointed with was some of the sets, I mean, there was not much to them, but with music like this show had, who needs sets, right? When I saw the show Gregory Calvin Stone played the part of Valjean and Todd Alan Johnson played Javert, they both did exceptional jobs. I suggest you try and find the 10th Anniversary video of this show as it was good. I think I could've done a better Thenardier though, but that's just me :)

Phantom of the Opera is the age-old story of Beauty and the Beast, just done differently, very differently. The show is about a man who lives in the underground lair of a Paris Opera House. He meets Christine Daae, an aspiring singer, and gives her his voice to sing with. Consequently he falles in love with her and she falls in love with Raoul. The Phantom vows revenge and he gets it by bringing down the chandalier on the stage. This show has beautiful songs such as All I Ask Of You, Phantom of the Opera and the haunting solo, Music of the Night. The show was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber amd has been preformed world-wide.
Well, I saw this show with four of the most beautiful girls in the world, but that is besides the point. This was an excellent show, i really enjoyed it. I have to be honest though, I think it is overrated. Don't get me wrong, I did highly enjoy the show, but I do not think it is "The Best Musical Ever Made" as many people claim. The singing was good and so was the acting, but there were certain parts where I was bored out of my mind. I really did enjoy it and would see it again. One thing I did not like was the rate at which the chandelier fell. It was too slow! It seemed like it took 5 minutes to fall, I mean no wonder it didn't hit anyone on the stage! They had time to run! But I did enjoy parts like in the graveyard, that was cool, and I also liked the songs "Prima Donna", "Music of the Night" and the finale number. The show was over all well done, and like I said I would go see it again!
The musical is based on the book by Gaston Leroux and has been made into not only two musicals, but several movies. The story is known world wide. If I could play any character in this show it would probably be one of the managers of the opera house. They are hilarious reading the notes. Another character I would give a go at would be the Phantom. I don't have that good of a voice, but I would still like to try it. The eeriness of this show is, for me, what makes this show so enjoyable. I really enjoy it. The music is memorable and the CD is great. I listen to it often. The only thing that gave me a headache was Carlotta's high notes, but I mean it is and opera, right??? :) Below is just a small sampling of the links that there are on the web for Phantom.
