High School

Mike went to Phoenixville High school

His high school baseball coach was John "Doc" Kennedy. He later said of Mike: "One of the things that separated [Mike] was his intense desire, his commitment to wanting to play beyond high school. Mike lived for the game. To me, that self-motivation was the contributing factor in his success. There's no doubt he had the ability, but he took that ability and developed it to the limit."

He broke the Homerun record at his high school, which was previously held by Andre Thornton, who played his last 10 years (14 total) of his career for the Indians.
He was known for having a classic swing with above average power, but nothing else.

As a junior, Mike went hitless in his first varsity baseball game, before going on a 19 game hitting streak the rest of the year.

In 1986, Mike's senior year he hit .442, hit 11 homeruns, and 42 RBI.

However, scouting reports said that he was "too slow and, as a first baseman, had never demonstrated exceptional defensive skills or any semblance of a strong throwing arm."

He was voted as the League MVP in Baseball.

Mike was an American Legion MVP.
