1. General Hospital’s ratings are higher when they are together. Throughout 1994 and in the first half of 1995, during the height of Sonny and Brenda’s relationship, ratings were higher than they ever have been since, ranging from 5.7 to 6.3 ratings points. In contrast, from July 1995 to December 1995 which covers the time they broke up and their dalliances with Lily and Miguel, 4.5 to 5.4 was the range of ratings points. Although 5.4 was only .3 lower than when S&B were involved in a relationship - that is from the week Stone died so that is what caused such a high rating - not Lily or Miguel. During July, August and September of 1995 which mostly covers when S&B broke up (July), when Brenda went with Miguel (August) and when Sonny went with Lily (September) ratings were at an all time low, ranging from 4.5 to 4.8 - obviously showing viewer discontent at having S&B apart. Even the introduction of Jax on GH has not increased ratings to the point they were at when S&B were together. In fact, the ratings increased in 1996 during the dock scenes and the cabin scenes which both curiously enough showed S&B together again.
Even SOD knew that GH was better with the pairing of S&B evidenced by this quote in their 1/3/95 issue:
"GH also struck paydirt this year with the pairing of Sonny and Brenda. Alternately sexy, insecure, funny and poignant, this couple is one of the best-written on daytime. They don't need an outside force to keep them apart -- they are their own worst enemies. Isn't that a refreshing way to create tension within a relationship? Sounds a lot like real life...."
