A special thank you |
It's so simple...a simple somersault and yet for many kids with Agenesis
of the Corpus Callosum
it is such a challenge and doesn't come easily.
It doesn't stop there either. There are many things which don't come easily
to babies and children with ACC such as learning to reach for toys, lifting their heads
up while lying on their tummies, learning to roll over from back to tummy and tummy to
back, learning to sit up, learning to move out of a sitting position, learning to eat
table foods, learning to feed themselves, learning to crawl,
learning to bear weight on their feet, learning to pull to a stand, learning
to balance, learning to climb, learning to
walk, learning to talk, learning to jump...learning period doesn't come easily and is a struggle
for many children who are missing their corpus callosum. It is the corpus callosum
which sends the messages, without our even having to think about it, and helps us to
coordinate our bodies to use the two sides together. But, with that struggle comes
a deep sense of appreciation for each and every small and wonderful accomplishment
they gain.
Now, to throw a curve into the picture....there are actually some children with ACC
who don't struggle with these activities at all or maybe only just a little bit. Then
there are those children/adults who are functioning 'normally' in every way and don't
even have any idea that they are missing their corpus callosum.
The thing to keep in mind though is that learning comes at different
times for each child and not to compare your child with any other
children or any other children with ACC. As a mommy of a 19 year old boy with ACC, I realize that this is easier said than done. They are on their own timetable for learning and all we can do is to help them the very best we know how and have patience with ourselves and our children...*smile*
