The Captain's Order

by Lynn

A full security detail lined the deck as Captain Lee Crane stood on the bridge of the sail that towered over the deck, he looked out at the fast speed boats that were bringing his latest passenger from the South American island in the distance.

Their “passenger” had been tried and found guilty by the world court for atrocities against his own people.  His own country had successfully and legally removed him from office,  but it was feared that his presence would cause more unrest with factions still loyal to his cause, as would executing him for his crimes against the people.  It was greatly feared that Salvador's death would make him a martyr and fuel more unrest.

The new government of this small South American country had too many issues to deal with right now, and so they had accepted the idea of holding Salvador accountable to the world court's jurisdiction.  His incarceration in an unknown country would hopefully cause his small constituency of supporters to lose faith and move on to the new life that the newly formed government offered its people.

The reefs in this area were dangerous to navigate, and not for the first time Lee wondered why this spot had been picked for the exchange.  Beside the dark haired captain stood Lt Commander Chip Morton also looking through binoculars.  They were following the advancement of the boats, one of them carrying General Salvador.

“Keep a sharp eye out Chip.  I'm going down to the deck to supervise the exchange.”

“Aye Sir,” Chip replied as he raised the binoculars back to his eyes and continued to scan the ocean for any signs of trouble.

The deck security detail was vigilant and stood with their arms drawn as the boats came along side Seaview's deck and sailors helped to hold the lines as the general was off loaded.  Salvador stood proud and tall as if going to an inauguration instead of  prison.  The boats were quickly turned around and started back to the island as Salvador was escorted across the deck toward the conning tower hatch.

Suddenly, chaos broke out as Lee heard Chip yell, “Boats approaching!”

Lee looked up to see where Chip was pointing and saw speed boats approaching from behind the reefs.

“Get Salvador below!  Clear the deck!”

The speed boats were already sending a barrage of bullets their way, and Lee drew his sidearm returning shots as well.  He looked behind him to see Salvador disappear into the conning tower.

“Clear the deck!”  Lee yelled again, motioning toward the conning tower hatch.

“Chip!  Emergency dive in five minutes!”

Chip nodded his understanding and picked up the mic issuing the order to ready for emergency dive.  He looked down to Lee's position, “Come on, Lee,” he said willing Lee to move out of harm's way, but he knew that Lee would be the last one to leave the deck.

The boats were getting closer and the gunfire was getting more intense as the closer range allowed for better aim.  Lee heard a man fall behind him, and turned to see Patterson down holding his leg.  He returned gunfire as Kowalski picked up Patterson with an arm over his shoulder and ran toward the conning tower hatch.

The boats were over running them, Lee laid down cover as the first boat reached the deck.   The last of the men were filtering through the hatch as Lee called to Riley.

“Dog the hatch Riley, I'll go up the sail!”

Lee needed the emergency dive to prevent Seaview from being boarded and he reasoned he would still have time to make the sail hatch on the bridge, and the diving boat would be the deterrent he needed to rid his boat of the attackers.

He fired again at the stern of the boat where the attackers were taking up positions on the deck, then he turned and ran leaping to catch a rung up the sail, yelling as he climbed.

“Chip ready the dive!”

“Aye Skipper,” Chip called the order below and fired his sidearm to give Lee coverage.  A shot hit too close to Lee and he turned opening up his body to return fire when a second shot caught him in the left shoulder.  His left hand lost it's purchase and Lee fell back ten feet onto the hard deck.  Chip looked over the top of the conning tower and started to make a move to climb down when Lee stopped him.

“Dive Mr. Morton!  Dive!”  The order was unmistakeable and going against everything Chip wanted to do at that moment, he turned, descended down the hatch dogging it as he yelled down to the control room.

“Execute Emergency dive now!”

It was with satisfaction that Lee heard the klaxons blow their warning of the impending dive.  He could already feel the boat submersing as he laid there.  His body was heavy from the bullet in his shoulder, but mostly from the fall.  It had taken his wind out and he had used everything up barking his order out to Chip.  He was proud of his first officer, now Seaview would be safe and their mission secure.

He felt rough hands pull him up and drag him over to the side of the boat as the water began flooding over the top of the deck.  Lee was thrown into a speed boat and soon they were speeding away back behind the reefs from where they came, their positions hidden by the sharp rocks that jaunted upward.

Lee held his right hand up to his shoulder applying pressure as he was moved to the bow of the boat.  He did an inventory and decided that the fall hadn't broken any bones, although his back didn't feel too hot just now.  A small pained smiled formed on his face as he watched the conning tower lose itself in the depths of the ocean, leaving only foaming bubbles where the great submarine once sat.

Chip skipped the last three rungs as he climbed down the hatch and jumped to the deck.  “Report Mr. O'Brien!” Chip bellowed as he made his way forward.

“Its green across the board Sir.”

Chip looked across the board to confirm and then found the inquiring blue eyes of Admiral Nelson.

“He was still on deck Sir.  He was shot and ordered me to crash dive.”  Chip's statement had cost him something deep inside to verbalize.  He had just dove the boat with his best friend still up on deck, with a bullet in his shoulder.  It wasn't like he could just float away, the dive would produce a suction that would pull Lee down at least twenty feet before he would be able to break free and swim to the surface.

Harry's eyes registered Chip's statement as he flung to the periscope island.

“Up scope!”

Chip depressed the button bringing the periscope to the Admiral's eye level as Harry searched the sea.  He found the boats speeding away and searched until he found Lee sitting up in the bow of the lead boat, holding his left shoulder but conscious.

“He's alive,” Harry turned the periscope over to Chip to let him see as well.  Chip watched as the boats rounded the reefs and disappeared.

“Kowalski, are you following the boats?”

“Aye Sir, they're using the reefs as cover and headed back inland.”

Chip repositioned the periscope as he stepped down from the island.  His normally stoic XO face completely betrayed his feelings, as he walked back to the radio shack.

“Sparks, monitor all channels.  They're going to want to set up a trade of some kind.”

Chip turned and found Harry standing right behind him.  “You did the right thing Chip.  Can you imagine the disaster if they had boarded the boat?”

“Thank you Sir,” was said with little conviction.  Right now Chip didn't feel too good about leaving his commanding officer and best friend to be used as a bargaining chip to free Salvador.  Everyone knew that no trade would be made.  Lee Crane was now in the hands of some very ruthless men who were desperate to breathe new life into their cause.

* * * * *

The boat sped away as Lee began to get his breathing under control.  The bullet was lodged in his shoulder blade causing him considerable pain.  His normally well kept hair was wet and curly from the sea spray that had him nearly soaked.  He had watched until Seaview had completely submerged and felt a great relief inside.  Lee didn't know what they wanted with him but he could guess, a trade for Salvador, only it wasn't going to happen.  There was nothing he could do but wait and see what would happen.

The boat turned behind the reefs and slowed down navigating the sharp rocks ahead.  Lee swallowed hard as his shoulder reminded him of the bullet still lodged there as the boats moved toward a cove off to the right of the shoreline.  The cove was well hidden and not visible until they were nearly upon it.  Lee's heart sank, Seaview would lose him here.

The boats slowed even more as the cove turned into a cave as they traversed the passage way leading to a dock.  Armed guards lined the dock as a man in his mid thirties stood scanning the boats.

“Salvador?”  The man on the dock asked harshly.

“We didn't get him, Duarte,” he pulled Lee up by his good shoulder and helped him onto the deck as he spoke, “but I did bring you something valuable.”

Lee stood before the dark complected man still holding his left shoulder.  There were of similar heights and Lee looked him squarely in the eyes, showing no hint of intimidation.  The leader had black curly hair that was worn long just past his shirt collar.  He was muscular and outweighed Lee by at least thirty pounds.  He wore standard solid green fatigues and wore a side arm low on his hip like a gun fighter.  A small smile began to crawl across Duarte's face as he seemed to recognize their new prize.

“Captain Crane of Seaview, what a surprise.  You will be a most valuable hostage.” Duarte turned his attention to the guard standing behind Lee,  “Take him to the battle room.”

Lee was pushed along as he struggled to walk, the blood loss and pain taking a toll on him.  As he walked he tried to memorize every turn as they made their way through the complex.  They walked past crates of supplies, weapons and ammo but not a large amount Lee noticed.  He was brought to a room with computer consoles and a large monitor for video calls.

Lee's guard moved him over to the center of the battle room and stood beside him as another guard moved in to flank him as well.  The room was full of soldiers wearing sidearms, and guards with rifles were posted at the door.  This was not going to be an easy escape.  He would have to wait until the odds were better.   Lee lowered his right arm down from his shoulder holding his left arm trying to ease the ache from the arm hanging loose.

He turned his attention to the equipment around him, they had an extensive radio set up but Lee had doubts that he would be able to send a message unless he could somehow clear the room with a diversion.  His head was turned scanning the room when he became aware of someone walking towards him.

He turned to meet the cold dark, nearly black eyes of Duarte.  The smile on his face was unsettling as he circled Lee in a menacing way.

“I'm afraid you wear your bullet too well Captain Crane,” with that Duarte stepped aside as a guard delivered a blow to his injured shoulder with the end of a rifle butt.  Lee grabbed his shoulder again breathing hard as the wound began to bleed again.

“Now, let's make a call to Admiral Nelson, shall we?”  Duarte moved to the video monitor, his radio operator making contact as Lee struggled to stand.

* * * * *

“A  video call for you Admiral Nelson, the rebels are making contact.”  Sparks voice sounded loudly over the boat intercom system as Harry reached for the mic.

“I'll take it in the nose.”

Harry moved forward as Chip turned the monitor on and then resettled on Harry's right side.  The screen cleared and the face of Colonel Duarte filled the screen.

“Our demands are simple Admiral Nelson. I propose an exchange, Captain Crane for General Salvador.  I will choose the exchange conditions, you deliver the General and you'll get your Captain back.”  Duarte's reasonable tone was lost on the Admiral because of  the unreasonable demand set before him.

“Surely you know Colonel Duarte, that we can't do that.”  Harry's voice was calm and cold as he spoke.

Duarte turned motioning his men forward with Lee, “Perhaps you should speak with your crew, Captain Crane.  They might not share the Admiral's feelings on the matter.”

Harry watched as Lee and two guards entered the view screen.  Lee's face was white and blood oozed from between his fingers as he applied pressure to his wound.  Lee's voice was weak but still held its command edge as he spoke.

“My crew knows their duty, and they will do it without questioning their orders.”  Lee's defiance irritated Duarte as he backhanded the Captain in a show of ruthlessness meant to intimidate Admiral Nelson.

Harry watched as Lee was barely held up by the guards that flanked him.  “Duarte, if you harm my captain any more you'll have me personally to deal with, as well as the entire United States military.”  Harry's voice was dark and menacing as he delivered his threat, but Duarte just smiled.

“Do you still refuse a trade?”

“Yes...” before Harry could continue Duarte cut off the communication leaving their screen black.

Harry turned to see Chip, still staring at the black screen.  He seemed to shake himself loose from his deep thoughts and turned to Harry.

“What now Sir?”  His blue eyes expressing what he could not with words.

“We'll keep looking Chip.  We know the area where we lost sonar contact, we'll start there.”

“Aye Sir.”  Chip's hope began to return, he'd find a way to get to Lee, and this time he wasn't going to be left on the boat while a rescue party went out.  He'd make sure of it.

\* * * * *

Duarte smiled as he turned around to face Lee.

“Now, just what should we do with you Captain?”

“I'd be happy to leave now and relieve you of that problem,” Lee answered dryly and through shallow breaths.

Duarte laughed, although it lacked humor.  “I like you Captain.  They tell me you ordered your submarine to dive with you still on deck, and now your defiance.  I think you are a man who knows reality and deals with it.”

Duarte moved closer to Lee as he spoke, “So let me tell you what reality is.  This insurrection that we are part of doesn't need our leader Salvador.  What it needs is funding.  I knew your country would never trade Salvador for you.”  Duarte's words were low and deliberate as he spoke, “But my men needed to see that.  It is of no consequence.  Salvador is nothing, but you...you can get me the funds I need to keep the rebellion alive.”

“You won't get a ransom from the US.”  Lee spoke matter of factly.

“How about your friends out there?  Are they so willing to watch you die before their eyes?”

“Admiral Nelson would never pay the likes of you for my release, no matter what his feelings are.  I may not be worth as much as you think I am.”  Lee felt a satisfied half smile threatening to form on his face, but he schooled it back, mostly because another blow just now would probably put him under.

“So your country does not value you?...Your friends do not value you?”  Duarte walked around Lee again pausing his conversation until he was directly in front of Lee again.  “What about your enemies Captain Crane?  What value do they place on your life?”

Lee swallowed hard, he was really hoping that Duarte wouldn't think of that angle.  He had made a lot of enemies defending his country and the world from all sorts of threats and evil plans of evil men.  Not to mention the fact that Lee held a very high security clearance and knew vital information about many US military installations, as well as ONI operatives around the world.

Duarte's smile increased, he had known what he was going to do all along, but it had been extremely pleasurable to watch the arrogant American realize that he was going to be sold to the highest bidder for his information.

Duarte turned back to his radio operator, “Get hold of our contacts.  Tell them that we have some very valuable merchandise to sell.”

Lee's eyebrows tightened in concern.  This could be very bad.

Harry paced the nose as Chip leaned over the charts of the island in front of them.  It was a large island and there were plenty of coves to hide in, he was looking over the region of their last coordinates before the boats fell off the grid.  There was nothing marked on the charts to give them a clue where to start first.  He was considering this when Spark's anxious voice was heard across the control room floor.

“Admiral.  Mr. Morton.  You need to hear this!”  Sparks was busy dialing gains and flipping switches that he hadn't even used the com system, bypassing the otherwise standard operating procedures for the boat radio operator.

Harry and Chip both arrived about the same time as Harry spoke, “Put it on speaker Sparks.”

“Gentlemen, surely you agree that Captain Crane is worth more than $1.3 million dollars?”

Harry and Chip both recognized Duartes' voice as he auctioned Lee off like he was a prized stallion.  They listened as the bid hit $2 million and stayed, Duartes' voice was exceedingly proud as he closed off the bidding and congratulated General Enrique Vallarez for his winning bid.  The transmission ended with code signs that Harry and Chip didn't recognize, while Sparks recorded the entire transmission for their review.

Chip sighed, he knew that Lee had completed a mission for ONI that had resulted in a large munitions compound being blown to smithereens.  And that Vallarez had a personal vendetta against Lee, as Lee had infiltrated his own personal elite guards to complete his mission.  He had made a fool of Vallarez on his own home turf.  Lee's cover was blown, but the explosion he had arranged provided the diversion he needed to make good his escape.  It was one of the few times Lee had returned without too much more than sore ribs and a black eye.

Harry knew the story as well, as he and Chip exchanged glances that said they had better come up with something fast.

“Sparks, get me Admiral Johnson at ONI.  I'll take it in my cabin.”  Harry turned to leave, calling Chip to follow him.

Sparks busied himself with the call to Washington, but inside he was worried.  He saw the look the Admiral and Mr. Morton had on their faces when they left, things were really bad for the Skipper.

* * * * *

Lee was placed in the center of the battle room, on display as merchandise for men who wanted his secrets.  Several of the bidders he knew all too well, others were just names in a dossier but Lee knew that any one of them would be bad news.

Duarte started the bidding at $1 million dollars and Lee was surprised to hear the men tinker over him like they were buying wares at an outdoor market.  He knew he had made enemies, but this was more than that, it was his country's secrets...secrets that he would not betray.

He schooled his expression carefully, not wanting to give away his trepidation at who he feared most would give the winning bid.  He had also been kept standing ever since they had took him from the speed boat, and he was extremely fatigued, though he tried not to show his weakness to these men, anyone of them would prey heavily upon it if they could.

The bidding ended at $2 million dollars and Lee held in a silent sigh, the man he had feared the most had won the bid.  General Vallarez had a great deal to hate Lee over, especially since Lee had bested him in a hand to hand combat as he made his escape from the compound after the explosion.

The other bidders signed off, as Duarte and Vallarez exchanged codes and the radio operator put them through on another frequency.

* * * * *

“My merchandise looks somewhat damaged,” Vallarez stated looking Lee over.

“Yes, well a bullet to the shoulder.  I lost my doctor last month, but I have a nurse who can look after him.”  Duarte had retaken center stage in the monitor as Lee hung heavily between two guards trying at this point to stay conscious.

“I'll bring my man along, he's the best doctor in my country...”  Vallarez and Duarte continued their arrangements for transferring Lee, but their voices were far away as Lee began to lose his battle with consciousness.  His head dipped to his chest as he struggled to listen to what plans were being made concerning him.  The call ended and Lee was barely aware of Duarte's orders to take him to a cell.

“And call Andrea, tell her to do what she can for him.”  Duarte added over his shoulder.

The guards practically dragged Lee out of the battle room as Duarte smiled victoriously.  He had just made a deal that would keep the Rebellion in full gear for some time.  Salvador's loss would be made up in the arms deals, as well as the payoffs that Duarte would make, not to mention the necessities that a man of his new stature would need.  Life was about to get a whole lot better, he thought.

Lee was taken to a room with no windows except the window high on the cell door.  He was laid heavily on a cot as he struggled again with renewed pain due to his rough handling.

“Duarte says that he is crafty, secure him to the bed.”  The guard nodded and took a pair of handcuffs securing Lee's right hand to the metal frame of the bed.  The guard pulled on the cuff, satisfied that Lee was secure and turned to leave.

Lee looked wearily around the room, a cell with basic bathroom facilities in one corner and no other furniture in the room.  He could see the head of a guard outside the cell door through the window, this wasn't looking good.  An escape wasn't even an option just now, he was just about to drift off to sleep when he heard the door open.

* * * * *

“So,” Admiral Johnson summed up, “Duarte has sold Lee off to Vallarez for $2 million dollars.  This could be enough to jump start the rebellion again, not to mention the security issues if Crane breaks during interrogations.”

Chip's eyebrows sharpened at Admiral Johnson's lack of concern for Lee, but he didn't let it show as he stood behind Harry facing the video monitor on his desk.

Harry shook his head, apparently not missing the slight of concern for Lee as well.

“I know what you're thinking Harriman, that I don't care about Crane, but I have to look at the bigger picture here.”  Johnson lifted his hand up as if to dispel Harry's impending protests.  “Which, by the way, includes getting one of my best operatives out of enemy hands.”

Harry settled down slightly at that last remark as Johnson pushed forward with the conversation.

“As it turns out, we have an option here that should help us out quite a bit.”  Johnson's bombshell caused Harry to lean forward, this was the first positive words he had heard Gerald say since the conversation began.

“What option?”

“The CIA has a contact, very close to Vallarez.  He's the General's personal physician, Vallarez doesn't go anywhere without him.  I'll put you in contact with the CIA operative on your end, there's a good chance he'll attend Lee's injuries.”

Harry sat back, they would have someone on the inside.  He allowed a small smile to cross his face as he addressed Johnson, “Gerald, you've pulled one out of the hat again, now let's see if we can capitalize on it, I want my Captain back...in one piece.”

“As do I Harriman.  Keep me in the loop, but you'll be dealing with the local CIA operative from here on out.”

Harry nodded and they signed off the video call.

Chip moved back around to the other side of the desk dismissing the chair, preferring to stand as he spoke.

“Admiral,” Harry's head popped up to meet the determined eyes of Chip Morton.  “Request permission to join the rescue detail.”  Chip stood looking quite Navy staring straight ahead as if he were a young plebe on his first roll call.

“Chip, you're the First Officer aboard this boat.  I need you here...”

“Begging the Admiral's pardon, but I sealed the hatch and gave the order to dive leaving  Lee out on that deck with a bullet in his shoulder,” Chip's voice had elevated but he quickly composed himself as he continued, “Sir, I need to go this time.”

Harry looked at Chip's eyes and nodded.  Chip had obeyed his Captain's orders, but the cost had been high for both of them.

“Alright Chip, we'll both go.”

Chip's shoulders relaxed, and he let out an audible sigh of relief, “Thank you Admiral.”

“Now that that's settled, let's plan a rescue.”  Harry's voice was calm and full of confidence, as Chip took the guest chair and they began making plans to get Lee back.

* * * * *

Lee heard the door and opened his eyes to meet the face of a young girl, perhaps 16 or 17 years old.  She was pushing a cart with medical supplies on it and wheeled it close to the bed speaking as she positioned herself to care for Lee.

“My name is Andrea, I used to help Dr. Gonzalez as his nurse,” she smiled and began unbuttoning and opening Lee's shirt to expose his shoulder.

He watched her as she began to clean the blood around the wound.  Her long dark hair was partly pulled up to the top of her head in a band, while the rest laid down resting past her shoulders.  Her chocolate brown eyes revealed an innocence and Lee wondered how much she understood about what went on around her.

“You...don't seem to belong here Andrea,” Lee finally said, trying to ascertain if he had guessed correctly.

“What do you mean?”  She stopped her motion, dropped the soiled gauze into a bowl on her cart and picked another one up to continue.

“You seem kind, and caring.”  Lee's voice was pained and his eyelids were heavy.

She returned his statement with a slightly raised eyebrow.  “I don't even try to understand the politics involved, but this is how I can help.”

“You don't know what the Rebellion is all about, and yet you're here?”  Her ministrations caused a soft gasp as he closed his eyes trying to reign in the pain.

“Renaldo Duarte is my brother.  I trust what he is doing.”  She shrugged her shoulders in a slight fashion as she continued, “He has taken good care of me for many years.”

Lee sighed, Andrea had no idea what her brother was like, nor what she was involved with by being here.  She had finished clearing away the blood and began dabbing the wound with an antiseptic, the skin around the wound was red and angry and every dab caused sharp pain in his entire shoulder.  Surrounding the redness was a deep purple bruise starting to appear.

His breathing increased, and her face showed her concern.  “I have something for the pain.”

“No thanks, I need to be able to stay awake, I need to know what's going on around me.”

She looked over at his right tethered hand, “What did you do?  Are you a spy for the Americans?”

“No,” Lee didn't know how Andrea had been here so long without knowing what kind of people surrounded her, but she needed to be enlightened before her presence here got her killed.

“I was abducted off my submarine and brought here against my will.  My boat was here at the invitation of your government who was legally voted into office several months ago.”

Andrea looked visibly confused, his hazel expressive eyes spoke sincerity and when she looked into them she was instantly affected.

“Renaldo would have a good reason to bring you here...” her confusion was apparent and Lee hated to burst her trust in her brother, but her naivety in the matter would not protect her in a firefight.

“He had a good reason...money.  He sold me off to my enemy for money.”

Lee was at the end, and his eyes closed, but this time they didn't open again.  Andrea watched him as his breathing indicated that he had fallen into a deep sleep.  She reached over and brushed his short curled hair off his forehead.  A fever was setting in.  She let her hand linger there.  This American was so handsome, and kind...she lifted her hand away and pulled a blanket up to Lee's torso.    She would see what Renaldo said about him.

* * * * *

Harry and Chip made their way into the capital city, their fair skin and light hair a dead give away to the fact that they were Americanos.  But the country had opened its borders after the election and more and more American and Europeans were making their way here to secure business deals in this resource rich country.

They entered into the hotel, The Casa Grande.  It was the finest hotel in the capital, the opulence of the hotel was displayed in the high ceiling lobby with its huge crystal chandelier that was at least five feet in diameter.  The dark oak staircases led to rooms on four floors each with a fantastic mezzanine that overlooked the lobby below.

Harry and Chip had signed into a suite as businessmen, here to hammer out a deal with a local factory.  They brought along Ron Rodriguez, the hefty Latino who had been aboard Seaview from the beginning.  Ron blended in with the locals well, and spoke a similar dialect.

The CIA operative, Alexandro Reyes informed them that Vallarez always stayed at this hotel, and that the physician always made contact when he was here.

“How reliable is this Dr. Estrada?” Harry asked as he paced the large sitting room of the extravagant suite.

“Very.  He's not there by his own will.” Alex spoke in perfect  American accent, which only a few minutes ago had been rich with the local dialect's accent.  “Two years ago Vallarez was traveling through a village that Dr. Estrada was working in.  His jeep hit a mine and he was badly injured.  Dr. Estrada treated him and brought him back to full health.  He was conscripted into duty as Vallarez' personal physician.  To ensure that he cooperated, his family was threatened by Vallarez.  We were able to quietly extract his family last month, they're safe.  We have no way to contact Dr. Estrada, he's too close to Vallarez.  It's actually his information that led to the munitions dump being blown up a few months ago.”

Harry and Chip exchanged glances that Alex caught immediately.

“Something I need to know about Nelson?”  Alex was well aware of the rank of the officer before him, but in the field slip ups were too easy, so no rank was used.

“Lee Crane was the operative who took out that munitions dump.”

Alex blew out a breath looking off to the side as he spoke, “Dr. Estrada told me that the operative and Vallarez had fought it out.  It seems Crane got the best of Vallarez.”  His eyes returned to Harry and Chip.

“He's a very vindictive man Nelson, and he doesn't forget things like that.  This adds a whole new layer to our problem.”

“What do you mean?”  Chip chimed in hearing Alex's concern.

“Vallarez didn't just pay $2 million dollars for Crane's information.  He paid $2 million for his personal revenge.  I've seen how he plays, we have to retrieve Crane before Vallarez gets him back to his home turf, or there won't be anything left for us retrieve later.”

Alex's solemn words weighed heavily on Chip's heart.  He had done his duty, but look where it had left Lee, in the hands of a butcher.

* * * * *

“Ah, Andrea.  How is our guest?”   Duarte spoke in the soft even tones that he always used with his sister.

“He is resting, but he lost a lot of blood, and the bullet is lodged deep in his shoulder blade.  I think a fever has started, he needs a doctor Renaldo.”  Andrea's voice was full of concern as well as her facial expressions.

“General Vallarez is bringing his personal physician when he arrives tomorrow.  Just do what you can for him, I'm sure it will all work out fine.”

Andrea shuddered at Vallarez' name.  She didn't care for the man, or the way he looked at her.  He was hard and cruel and she wasn't sure why her brother had so many dealings with the man.  Was it true what the dark headed stranger had said?  For the first time, she began to doubt her brother.

“What does General Vallarez want with him?”

“It is a matter of state Andrea, nothing to concern yourself over.”  Duarte searched her eyes and saw the confusion there.

“Andrea, do not be taken in by the Americano's looks or charm.  He is the enemy and seeks to destroy our way of life.”

Andrea nodded compliantly, but inside she was full of questions.

“I will go back to his room and care for him until the doctor arrives.”

Duarte walked over and kissed her on the forehead smiling gently at his sister.  “You are a good soul Andrea, but he is a snake, do not let him deceive you.”

Andrea smiled, “I won't Renaldo,” then she turned to leave thinking heavily about what Renaldo had just said.  Perhaps the handsome Americano was using his charm to gain his release, she would be more careful.

* * * * *

Lee felt a cool cloth dabbing the sweat away from his face and opened his eyes to see that  Andrea was back.  Her eyes were concerned, but guarded as well.

“Would you like some water?” she asked gently.  Andrea had tried to remember that he was the enemy, but as she cared for him all she could see was the face of a gentle soul.  Surely she couldn't be taken in so easily by his handsome features?  He was too old for her, and it wasn't something she thought could go anywhere, but she was an impressionable sixteen year old.  Nearly 17 years old she reminded herself, but still, he's so old...he has to be in his thirties!

“Thank you,” Lee said with a soft small smile.

Andrea lifted his head and he took small sips and then let his head fall back on the pillow, as the movement caused a spike in pain that registered on his face.

“General Vallarez is bringing a doctor tomorrow,” she said hoping to encourage him.

“Tomorrow?”  Lee's question revealed his slight trepidation.

“Yes.  Are you concerned about that?”

Lee decided that Andrea didn't need to know the details of what Vallarez had in store for him.  The night that his cover had been blown the general had promised Lee a lot of pain.  He was quite descriptive in his threat and Lee was sure that they were not idle words.

He shook his head, “It doesn't matter.  How long have I been asleep?”

“Nearly three hours, but you've lost a lot of blood, the rest is good for you,” Lee nodded in response.

“Are you hungry?  I can bring some soup?”

“Sure, just a little I guess.”

Andrea smiled at the thought that she could do something to help this man.  She started to leave and realized that she didn't even know his name.

“What's your name?” she asked as she turned around to face him.

He smiled a soft smile, “Lee Crane.”  She returned the smile and left.

Andrea returned with the soup in a mug.  She placed it on her cart and helped him with pillows behind his back.  After he got his breathing under control she gave him the mug.  Lee wasn't really hungry, gunshot wounds had a way of doing that to him.  But he needed the strength, he couldn't let Vallarez take him. He would have to make an escape somehow.

Lee drank as much of the soup as he could and then gave the mug back to her.

“You're very kind Andrea,” Lee sighed, tomorrow he would be gone and he felt he owed it to this young naive girl to at least try and convince her of her precarious position here.

“Andrea, you don't belong here with these people.”

“My brother...” Andrea began, but Lee interrupted her.

“Your brother helped Salvador to wipe out entire villages who wouldn't support him.”

Her eyes reflected confusion and betrayal at the same time.  “Renaldo said that you would try and convince me to help you,” her statement nearly a sob.

“No,” his voice still soft and airy, “I'm not going anywhere tonight, you know that.”  Andrea knew he was too weak and couldn't possibly hope to escape until the bullet was removed.  “But you...you could leave and go someplace safe.”

“My brother would never harm me.”

“Your brother has already put you in harm's way by making you part of this.  How long can you turn your eyes from what's going on here?  Sooner or later, your brother will get you killed, or you'll end up in prison for helping him do what he's doing.”  Lee paused, pleading with his eyes, “Please Andrea, think about it.  Think about what you see here, now.  I'm a prisoner, here against my will.  Please just think about it.”

Her expression on her face betrayed her confusion as Lee pleaded again, “Will you promise to think about leaving?”

“I don't know.  I just don't know.”  Her head sagged down and Lee knew that he had just upset her entire world, still he hoped that some part of what he said had reached her.  It was now up to her.

Lee's strength waned, he was very tired and felt his eyes close even without trying.  Again he was aware of a cool cloth on his face and let the fleeting comfort take him back to sleep.

Harry, Chip and Alex stepped into the elevator and went up to the top floor, but did not deboard the elevator.  A distinguished dark haired man about 5'10”, and graying at his temples began to step in, but was obviously startled.  He looked into Alex's eyes and stepped into the elevator pushing the button to shut the door.  As the elevator started down, Alex reached over and stopped it.  They would only have a few moments.

“Who are these men?  We always meet alone Alexandro.”

“They can be trusted.  We know why you're here.  The man you will treat today is Captain Lee Crane of the submarine Seaview.  He is also the operative who blew the munitions dump.”

Estrada's eyebrows shifted upwards, “He is in great danger then.”

“Yes.  This is Admiral Nelson and his first officer Lt. Commander Morton.  Captain Crane was abducted off the submarine that took General Salvador into custody.”

Dr. Estrada nodded, not needing too many details to know his duty.  “I see, now I understand why Vallarez was in such fine spirits today.  What is it that you need?”

“All the information you can about his whereabouts and the facility.”

“I have never accompanied the General to the compound, so it will be new to me, but I will bring back as much information as possible.  You have a transmitter for me?”  Estrada held out his hand waiting for the transmitter that would keep him traceable if something should go wrong.

Alex nodded and pulled out a pen demonstrating it's use as he did so.  “Click three times once you've located Crane, and bring us back any information you can.”  Alex smiled as he paused, “And Ricardo, your family is safe, we pulled them out last month.”

Ricardo's face could not hold back his expression and an audible sigh escaped his mouth.  “Thank you my friend, I will do all I can for Crane.”

“Thank you Dr. Estrada, he's more than my Captain, he's my friend,” Harry offered as he spoke for the first time.

Estrada nodded as he pushed the button and the elevator began moving again, all of the men turned their attention to the numbers on top of the car acting as if they did not know each other.  Harry and Chip departed on one floor, Alex on another and Dr. Estrada at the lobby.

“General Vallarez!”  Duarte greeted the tall man before him warmly clasping both hands around Vallarez' hand.

“Renaldo, good to see you.  I see you have moved up in the world?” Vallarez said referring to Duarte's new role now that Salvador was gone.

“Yes, it is regrettable about our General Salvador, but the fight must go on.”  Both Duarte and Vallarez didn't believe that crock of bull one minute, but it had sounded good for the men around them.

“You have my merchandise?”

“This way,” Duarte motioned with his hand as Vallarez moved forward, “is this your doctor?”  Duarte said referring to the man following Vallarez.

“Yes, he has a lot of spirit, but he is the finest doctor in my country.”

Ricardo walked behind the men following them to a door with a guard out front.  The door was opened and the three men filed in.

Lee heard the door open and looked up to see General Vallarez and Duarte followed by another man.  The third man skirted around the two men and proceeded to Lee's side immediately beginning his examination.  Lee kept his eyes on Vallarez, there was no doubt that the general remembered him as Vallarez laughed heartily.

“And here is the valiant Captain Crane, it looks like you and I will have a lot of time to talk, eh?”  General Vallarez hinted at the interrogations that he had in mind for Lee.

“You won't get your money out of me Vallarez, I won't tell you anything.”  Lee's defiance only fueled Vallarez's pleasure at the situation.

“We will see about that Crane.  I have the best doctor in my country, I think I can keep you alive long enough to get more than my two million's worth.”

Lee looked as defiantly as he could at Vallarez, “How's the knee General?” Lee allowed a small mischievous smile to cross his face.  During their fight, Lee had delivered a devastating kick to Vallarez' knee sending him sprawling to the floor.

Vallarez took several steps toward Lee intending to take some revenge out on him now, “You will regret that night very much Crane, you will beg me to kill you!”

Dr. Estrada's head shot up and glared at Vallarez, “This talk is not helpful to my patient, he needs surgery right away before he develops blood poisoning.”

Vallarez turned toward Duarte shrugging his shoulders, “I told you he is spirited, he does not approve of all my methods but he is loyal.  Come let us drink over our deal.”  Vallarez and Duarte turned to leave as Estrada called to them.

“Wait, this room is hardly sterile, surely you have a better place?”

“Captain Crane will be treated here.”  Vallarez spoke asserting his power over the situation.

“What about this,” Estrada said picking up Lee's tethered right hand, “I can't go into surgery with his hand in a cuff.”

“Captain Crane is a resourceful man, he will not be released.  Don't push it Estrada, you know that I am not a patient man.” Vallarez delivered his threat darkly as Dr. Estrada continued apparently unaffected by Vallarez' words.

Estrada nodded, holding his mouth tightly, “I need an assistant,” he turned his attention to Andrea, “will you be able to help me?” he asked.

“Ah sweet Andrea, it is very good to see you again.”  Andrea turned her eyes away from Vallarez as he spoke, his smile was devious and his intentions weren't missed by either Lee or Dr. Estrada.

“Yes, Andrea is a fine nurse.  Andrea, assist the doctor any way you can,” Duarte offered as he led Vallarez out of the room, apparently unaffected by Vallarez' overtures to his sister.

Lee's head rested heavily on the pillows behind him, he really shouldn't have pushed Vallarez like that but he was satisfied that he had struck a nerve.  He wasn't stupid, he knew Vallarez intended to take out his wounded pride on Lee's hide.

Dr. Estrada turned toward Andrea, “I need supplies for the surgery, he pulled out a list that he had prepared earlier and gave it to her.  Can you retrieve these for me?”

Andrea looked over the list and nodded.  “Yes, Dr. Gonzalez has a well stocked supply cabinet.”

She turned to leave and Dr. Estrada leaned over closer to Lee to speak.  Lee had been ignoring the doctor, figuring he was just here to patch him up enough to be tortured later.

“Captain Crane,” Lee's eyes diverted toward the doctor, his light brown eyes were unusual for the people of this region and his voice was soft even as he cut away Lee's shirt appearing to go about his doctoring.

“I am in contact with the CIA, you are not alone,” he whispered.

Lee's eyes registered the doctor's words as he diverted his eyes toward the door window to see if they were being watched.  The guard was looking toward him so he didn't answer, but he affirmed his understanding with his eyes.

Estrada's back faced the door and so he continued speaking softly, “Admiral Nelson knows where you are,” he reached up and pulled out the pen and depressed it three times replacing it back into his shirt pocket.

The guard turned around, obviously distracted with something and Lee spoke, “Thank you Doctor?” Lee said inquiring his name.

“Estrada,  I am Ricardo Estrada and when this is over I ask for asylum on your boat.”

Lee smiled a quick smile that was schooled immediately, “You got it Doc.”  His eyes diverted back to the door as he saw the guard shift again.  Ricardo finished cutting his shirt completely off as Andrea wheeled in another cart full of supplies.

“I'm sorry Captain, that I can not use a stronger anesthetic,” Dr. Estrada said as he began injecting the wound with local anesthesia.

“Its okay, Doc,” Lee's eyes closed as he managed the pain of the injection, but soon his shoulder began to grow numb and he sighed in relief.  With the pain under control, Lee felt his eyes grow heavy and was soon out as Dr. Estrada began to make his incisions.

Andrea proved to be a good nurse, as Dr. Estrada expertly removed the bullet from Lee's shoulder.  Lee's face registered the pain and Dr. Estrada realized that he had woke up.

“A few more minutes, Captain.  The surgery went well.”  Ricardo's voice was calm and soothing as he made the final stitches on Lee's shoulder.  “There's a large bruise here,” he said as he tied off the last stitch.

“Rifle butt,” Lee offered his eyes still closed, managing the pain as the local wore off.

“That would explain the excessive bleeding.”  Dr. Estrada began wrapping Lee's shoulder as he spoke to Andrea who was staring down at where the large bruise was, though now it was hidden by bandages.

“He'll need a clean shirt, can you get one?”  His attention was still focused on his patient as he spoke.

“Yes, I'll be right back.”

When she left the room, Ricardo leaned over to talk to Lee.

“Vallarez will be here soon.  I'm going to convince him that it is too dangerous to move you so that I can report back.  You must appear weak, do not agitate him.”

A small smile crossed Lee's lips, “I'll be good, Doc.”

“Good, my fee will be a tour on your submarine.”  Dr. Estrada turned and began putting his tools away.  Lee appreciated his optimism, and he appreciated the danger Dr. Estrada was taking for him.

“Once we get the sling on, I'll put this inside.  That way your movements will be marked.”  Lee's eyes looked concerned.

“No, you might need it.”

“You let me worry about that, Captain.”

“Lee, call me Lee.”

“Alright, since we're dropping titles, its Ricardo.  What about the girl, can she be trusted?”

Lee sighed, “I don't know Ricardo.  Duarte's her brother.”

Ricardo gave a nearly indiscernible nod as the door opened and Andrea was followed in by Vallarez and Duarte.  Lee really didn't have to act too much to pull off the part of the weak patient.

“How is my merchandise Dr. Estrada.”  Vallarez said, trying to illicit a response from Lee, but Lee acted  too weak to care while Ricardo glared.

“The bullet was lodged deep and he lost a lot of blood.  I suggest you keep him here until tomorrow so that he will have a chance to rebuild his strength.”

Vallarez' eyes narrowed, and his forehead crinkled at the proposal.  “He looks well enough to me.  He'll go to the ship tonight.”

Ricardo moved closer to Vallarez challenging him as he spoke, “How soon do you want to interrogate him?  Because I guarantee that if you move him tonight you'll set back his recovery by weeks!”

Vallarez glared back at the spirited doctor, “Just when did you become so interested in my interrogations Dr. Estrada?”  Lee wondered if Ricardo had overplayed his hand, but he began to realize that this scene was not completely unusual.  It appeared that Vallarez was willing to overlook the doctor's imputes to keep his services.

“I'm NOT interested.  I am interested in my patient and what is best for him.  Moving him now is dangerous.”

Vallarez moved closer to Lee, his eyes boring into Lee's as he made his decision.  “Alright Dr. Estrada.  But he moves tomorrow, no matter what.”  The last was said with finality, and Estrada nodded his acceptance of the terms.

Vallarez moved closer to Duarte, “Finish up Doctor, we'll be leaving soon,” as he and Duarte left the cell.

Andrea moved in to help Ricardo put Lee's shirt on, although they couldn't slide his right arm through because of the still present handcuff.  She adjusted the shirt as the doctor retrieved the sling.

“Andrea, will you help me pack my supplies and I will give you the instructions for his care tonight.”  She moved in response to his bag turning her attention to packing the supplies.  Quickly and with no fanfare Ricardo took the pen from his shirt pocket and tucked it into the blue sling that lay across Lee's chest.  Lee could feel the pen against his arm, and gave Ricardo a look of thanks.

“I can give you some stronger pain medication now,” Ricardo explained as he prepared the hypo, “Rest as much as you can, you'll need your strength for tomorrow.”

Lee nodded at the double meaning to Ricardo's statement and closed his eyes as the injection washed a warm feeling over him and he was finally able to rest without pain.

* * * * *

Dr. Estrada joined Andrea as she packed his bag, she was noticeably distracted and lifted her head as she looked over at the sleeping captain.

“Dr. Estrada, what does General Vallarez want with Captain Crane?”

Ricardo's hands stopped packing for a moment as he lifted his eyes to look into Andrea's.

“You really don't know, do you?”  She nodded and he continued packing as he spoke.

“He has information that Vallarez wants.”

“Will he give it to him?”

Ricardo stopped and looked back at the sleeping captain, “No.  No, I don't believe he will.”

Andrea swallowed as if she didn't want ask the next question.  “What will they do to him?”

Ricardo looked her squarely in the eyes, “They will cause him great pain until he either talks...or he dies.”

Ricardo hated to see the innocence of the young lady be so bluntly destroyed, but what was she doing with these people in the first place?

He sighed and handed her two bottles of pills.  “This one is his antibiotics.  Two every four hours.  Very important.”  She nodded.

“This one is for the pain.  One every four hours, do not give him any after 6:00 am, he'll need to be able to walk when we leave.”  She nodded again, and Ricardo placed his hand on her shoulder in a paternal manner.  He squeezed and then turned to leave.

“Watch over our patient Andrea.  I'll be back tomorrow.”

Harry paced the extravagant hotel room floor as Chip sat at a table watching.  Ron had just come in the room bringing a note to Harry.  He had been a good courier between Alex and Harry as he blended in so well with the locals.

“Dr. Estrada has made contact with Alex, we'll meet in one hour.”  Harry said giving a synopsis of the note.

Finally!  Chip thought.   The waiting had been the hardest, as well as keeping up appearances and looking as if they really were businessmen.  They would meet Alex at a warehouse office to seemingly conduct business, and make their plans there.

The hour passed quickly and the three Seaview men huddled around Alex's desk at a busy warehouse.  The door was locked and Alex began the meeting by running a “bug finder.”  He declared the room clean and they began.

“Dr. Estrada says that he will recover from the bullet wound.  He lost a lot of blood and is weak, he said not to expect too much help from Crane during the rescue.”

Alex's words were reassuring, and Chip was encouraged.  He knew that Lee would do his part in the rescue, he had a way of pulling strength out of thin air when he needed it.

“Dr. Estrada left his transmitter for Lee,” Harry's head shot up and a small half smile spread up his face as Alex pulled out a map and handed Harry the small electronic box that read off blinking coordinates.  Harry traced his fingers over the map until he found the coordinates as Chip leaned over his shoulder.  Ron stood at the door, listening for any sounds of movement out in the hall.

Chip leaned over and pointed to a spot near the shore, “This is where we lost the boats on sonar.”

“Hmmm,” Harry thought out loud, “that means there has to be a cove somewhere around here.”  Harry circled a spot on the map as Chip nodded in agreement.

“FS1 could navigate the reefs,” Chip offered as he studied the map.

“Yes, I think that's a good idea,” Harry traced the road that led to the outside of the compound, “We could flank them from both sides.”

Alex nodded his head and smiled, “We've been looking for their hideout for a long time.  I'm sure I could secure the army's backup in this.”

“Good, we'll use them as a diversion but the timing will have to be just right.”  The three men nodded their understanding.

“When will they move him?”  Chip asked as he looked across the desk to Alex.

“Dr. Estrada says tomorrow morning.”  Alex leaned back in his chair watching Harry as a plan began to formulate in the brilliant Admiral's mind.

“Gentlemen, here's how we're going to do it...” Chip and Alex leaned forward nodding as Harry laid out the plans to rescue Lee.

* * * * *

Lee woke around 0600, when the pain medication had wore off leaving him sore.  He didn't want another dose, he needed to be clear headed and able to physically respond.  Andrea was gone having left sometime in the night as Lee adjusted himself in the bed to more of a sitting position.

His head leaned back on the pillows as he thought about the events that would transpire this morning.  He would either be rescued or sent to Vallarez' ship, he didn't even want to think about what Vallarez had in mind for him.

He could feel the transmitter against his arm, and it brought comfort to him to know that Harry knew where he was.   The ache in his shoulder was becoming more troublesome, but it wasn't nearly as bad as yesterday and he tried his best to ignore it.  His back was still sore from the fall off the sail, and that thought reminded him of Chip.

As he laid there on the deck trying to breathe he was frantic as he looked up and saw Chip moving to descend down the ladder.  He couldn't let his boat be boarded by these men so he ordered Chip to dive.  Lee remembered the look on Chip's face, but his Naval training had won out as Chip turned to comply.

He knew it cost Chip to leave him there, but right now they only had to rescue one man, it was him or the crew.  It was a good trade and well worth it, he hoped Chip would understand.  Lee's eyes closed and he drifted off for an uncomfortable but bearable rest.

Lee thought he had barely closed his eyes when he heard the door open watching Andrea as she walked in.  He glanced at his watch and was surprised to note that it was an hour later, 0710.  Andrea's facial expression showed her obvious concern as she walked toward Lee.  She wore the same style clothes she had worn the day before, much like most of the young ladies in the area.  A gathered skirt and white blouse gathered at the waist by a belt, which accented her slim waist.  Her dark hair was worn the same as yesterday, with it half pulled to the top of her head, and the rest brushing past her shoulders.

“How are you feeling today Captain?”  Lee noticed that she had avoided his first name, and wondered if she was distancing herself from his influence.

“Better.  How about you?  You look...distracted.”  Lee hoped that she had given thought to leaving, but he couldn't let whatever rescue plans that were underway be known, not if Andrea was still loyal to her brother.

“I'm fine,” she said with a weak smile.  “I heard Renaldo says that General Vallarez would be here within the hour.  Her head tilted down as she studied her hands clasped before her.

“Lee?  Please, just tell the General what he wants to know, I don't want to see you hurt.”

Reality could be such a blow, but softening this one would do her no good.  “Andrea, I can't give him what he wants, it would cost others their lives.  I can't betray them for my comfort.”

Her head tilted down, and she nodded.  Apparently someone had enlightened her on Vallarez' plans.  Lee hated to see her innocence shattered, but she could no longer claim to be naive, she would have to face the truth and make a decision.

* * * * *

The guard had released Lee's hand from its tethered position as Lee sat up on the bed regaining his equilibrium.  Dr. Estrada stood beside him, finally able to fit his shirt over his right shoulder and adjusting his sling for his new position.  Andrea stood off to the side watching Lee as a small grimace crossed his face.  Lee and Ricardo couldn't discuss the rescue plans, but Lee knew that it was on by the brief exchange of their eyes when Ricardo first walked in.

They both looked up as the door opened and General Vallarez walked in proud as a peacock, sporting a cruel smile.

“So Captain Crane, you are ready to leave for my country?  I will be a most gracious host.”  His smile left no doubt that his graciousness was nothing to be desired.  He walked up and waved the doctor away from Lee.  Vallarez towered over Lee as they stared intently at one another.  Then Vallarez reached out and began applying pressure to Lee's shoulder.  Lee held in the gasp that threatened to escape and only a low grunt was heard.  He kept his face stern not letting Vallarez see the pain, but the beads of sweat that rolled down his forehead gave it away.  Vallarez stepped away satisfied that he had elicited that response and turned to Ricardo.

“Bring your patient Doctor, I am ready to leave.”  He turned to Andrea and bowed, clicking his heels together, “My dear, until we meet again.”  She nodded in acknowledgment and then quickly turned her eyes away from the general.

Duarte and his men filed out behind Vallarez as Ricardo helped Lee to his feet supporting him on his right side.

“Stay close Doc,” Lee urged, he had the transmitter and he didn't want Ricardo getting lost in whatever rescue plan was now underway.

“Good bye Andrea,”

She nodded, but her eyes gave away her utter confusion at watching Vallarez' cruel display minutes earlier.  Her brother had made no effort to stop the general, nor did she notice any distress in his face.  She began to see him for the first time, as ruthless as General Vallarez.

* * * * *

Andrea walked behind Lee and the Doctor but when they turned to the right to head to the docks, she proceeded forward toward the compound gates.  The rocks began to narrow and a corridor formed up ahead.  Renaldo was busy with Vallarez and didn't notice her as she calmly walked forward.  As the corridor narrowed Andrea caught sight of men in black camouflage on either side of her.

Her heart quickened as she realized that these were not her brother's men, but the new government army.  It had been ingrained in her by her brother to distrust them, but she realized that they may be the only hope that Lee had.  They kept their guns trained ahead and cautiously allowed her to walk on.  She cleared the corridor with its rocky walls that protected even more commandos until she reached a man who pulled her to the side of the opening away from the view of the compound.

“Are you here to rescue Captain Crane?” she asked with eyes that were committed to the cause.

“Do you know where they're taking him?”  Alex asked.

“They are taking him to the dock to leave by speed boat.”

Alex nodded and raised the radio to his mouth, “Blue Leader, they're headed your way.”

“Acknowledged,” was all she heard.

“Okay Miss, let's move you out of harm's way.”

“My name is Andrea, Andrea Duarte can you help me leave this place?”

Alex looked at her face and found sincerity there.  His wouldn't be the final say so in the matter, the locals would decide, but he'd speak on her behalf, she could have raised the alarm at the first and the whole thing would have been blown.  Alex nodded and placed her in the care of a medic waiting for the firefight to start.

* * * * *

Harry and Chip waited in the flying sub, they had gone back in the night for Kowalski, since he was both a pilot and a field medic.  They didn't want the flying sub loaded down too much since Harry expected to bring both Lee and Dr. Estrada back as well.  Alex was leading the army commandos in from the land route and they were in radio contact with him.  They were waiting for the transmitter to detect movement, indicating that Lee was on the move.

The flying sub lay in waters hidden by the reefs.  They would enter the cove submersed at the first sign of Lee's movement.  Alex would do the same.

“Blue Leader, this is Red Leader.  Come in.”

Harry lifted the hand held radio to his face, recognizing Alex's voice and call sign.  “Go ahead Red Leader.”

“Assets in place, just outside the compound, signal when you're ready for the diversion.”

“Very well.  Blue Leader out.”

“Admiral, Lee's on the move.”  Chip announced, watching the transmitter's signal on FS1's control panel.  Harry acknowledged as FS1 began to stealthily navigate the cove.

A few minutes later they heard Alex report again,  “Blue Leader, they're headed your way.”

“Acknowledged,” Harry answered as FS1 moved along, closer to their objective.

* * * * *

Lee moved slowly along, he was stronger than he was letting on and he didn't know the rescue plan, but he did know to expect a diversion.  He was ready to move to protect Ricardo, anything after that he'd play by ear.

They walked along the corridor and back out to the same dock area where Lee had been brought in two days ago.   Lee scanned the area without turning his head, all of the sudden he heard an explosion behind him.  He pulled Ricardo to the wall beside him as Vallarez and Duarte turned toward the sound of multiple hand grenades being tossed in the around the compound.

Lee caught sight of the commandos, holding back Duarte's men in the corridor.  Vallarez recovered quickly and trained his gun on Lee and Ricardo.

“This way Crane.”  Vallarez moved in behind Lee using his body as a shield walking backwards toward his speedboat.  The general motioned Ricardo behind him and he complied, staying close to Lee and the transmitter.

Vallarez moved Lee into the speedboat and Estrada followed.  Duarte climbed in as well shooting back at the commandos who had kept their fire away focused toward Duarte's men in the corridor, snipers laid down careful firepower designed to keep Vallarez busy but not endanger the hostage.

Just then frogmen ascended pulling two of Vallarez' men out of the boat.  Lee saw his chance and landed an elbow into Vallarez' gut.  Even though Lee had used his right elbow the effort had cost him, but he ignored the pain landing another punch to Vallarez' face.  Duarte turned, surprised by the, ambush and raised his gun toward Lee.  A sniper's shot caught him and Duarte went down, but not before his shot went wide, missing Lee and hitting Ricardo in the arm.

Vallarez recovered and landed a blow to Lee's left shoulder which elicited a cry from Lee as the general lunged forward with fire in his eyes.

“I'm going to kill you Crane!”

He hovered over Lee, having lost his gun and began moving forward ignoring the gunshots popping all around him.  With Lee and Ricardo down, the snipers had a clear shot and took General Vallarez down with a single shot.

Chip was the first to climb in the boat and secured the weapons of Vallarez and Duarte.  Harry followed pulling his radio out.

“Red Leader, we have them.”

“Acknowledged.”

Harry watched as the army commandos advanced to take the compound.  Lee had rolled on his side holding his shoulder as Harry turned him over with searching eyes.

“I'm okay Sir, how's the Doc?”

Harry looked toward Chip who was applying a field dressing, “Got winged, I think he'll be okay.”

Ricardo nodded and looked back at Lee, “You're not getting out of my tour that easy Captain.”

Lee let a pained smile cross his face and nodded at Ricardo as their mutual respect was acknowledged in both their eyes.

The firefight dwindled and before long Harry's radio hailed him once more.  “Blue Leader, come in.”

“Blue Leader here.”  Harry answered keeping a sharp lookout for stray unfriendlies.

“The compound is secure.”

With that commandos began to move toward the speed boat taking Vallarez and Duarte into custody.  Duarte was letting out curses as they pulled him out of the boat, his hands having already been secured by Chip.  Vallarez got out with more dignity but sent a dark glare towards Lee.

“I am not finished with you Crane.”

But Lee's satisfied smile held no hint of intimidation as Vallarez was escorted out.  Harry helped Lee up to a sitting position as Lee held his shoulder, as crimson red bled through the dark green camouflage shirt that Andrea had brought him.

“You okay Lee?”  Harry's voice was soothing and calm.  As Lee smiled delivering his standard answer for all things medical, “I'm fine, Sir.  Thanks for coming.”

He looked over and caught Chip's concerned eyes, “Both of you, Thanks.”  Chip nodded, they'd talk later, but right now Chip felt a huge weight lift off his shoulders as he returned Lee's smile.

Lee sat at the conference table in the nose of Seaview.  His left arm was secured across his chest as he took a sip of his coffee.  He had given Ricardo his tour, and his heartfelt thanks as Alex escorted him to a waiting ship to join his family.  Lee was pleased for the Doctor, he was a man of high character and he deserved the freedom his family would have in America, his asylum having been influenced by a happy Admiral Johnson.  Two high enemy targets had been taken out, Lee had been retrieved, and the local government was now able to put their efforts into bettering the country with free enterprise.

Alex had lived up to his word, and had spoken for Andrea.  The government agreed to a full pardon as her alarm could have blown the entire rescue operation.  Lee had said his goodbyes on the dock at the compound, and was pleased that she had made the right decision.

Everything about the mission was tied up in a neat little bow.  Well, almost everything.  Lee was looking across the control room to the chart table at the final loose end that needed to be addressed.  He rose and walked toward the chart table, he was still on light duty and would spend the rest of the day doing reports in his cabin.

“Mr. Morton, please report to my cabin at your earliest convenience.”

“Aye Sir.”  Chip replied, very formal and correct.

Lee returned to his cabin and took some analgesics.  He wouldn't take the good stuff until bed time.  He sat at his desk wondering just how he was going to iron this out with Chip.  Chip had been relieved to see him at the dock, but they had not talked...really talked since returning to the boat.

A knock on the door caused Lee's head to rise as he answered, “Come.”

Chip walked in, standing close to the door, “Something you need, Lee?”

“Yeah,” Lee motioned Chip over to the guest chair, “I want to thank you for what you did.”

Chip sat down heavily, and let out a sigh, “I'm just glad the rescue went so well, Lee.”

“Not the rescue, although...” Lee smiled, “that was great too.  I mean for taking the boat down, for obeying my order without question.  I'm sorry it was so hard.”

Lee's sincere words were too much for Chip, he leaned over with his elbows on his knees and rested his head in his hands.  Lee waited for Chip, giving him time to compose himself.

“It was one of the hardest things I've ever done Lee.”  Chip's voice was low, and Lee nodded in understanding, and then spoke with sincerity.

“When I watched Seaview dive, I can't tell you how proud I was of you as my First Officer...and as my friend.”

Chip's head shot up at the last word and Lee continued.  “If they had boarded Seaview, we would have had 125 men to rescue, this way it was only me.  You didn't put our friendship above your duty, and I knew I could trust you with the order.”

Chip searched Lee's eyes, and Lee started to see the fire that was missing come back into his blue eyes.

“Well alright, but if you EVER pull a stunt like that again, I'll throw you off the conning tower myself!”

Lee smiled and Chip returned it in a flash of white teeth.  The tension was now lifted and both men felt a little exhausted for it, but the momentary silence wasn't uncomfortable for either of them.  Chip leaned back and stretched his legs out casually before him.

“How's the shoulder?”

“Better.”

“Good, you look like you need a rest.  Dinner in the wardroom later?”  Chip rose and headed toward the door.

“Yeah, sure.”

Chip nodded and left the room, his shoulders squared and his perfect XO face in full gear.

Lee sat back in his chair resting his head back with a smile, things were back to normal again.  He leaned forward and began working on the pile of reports in front of him...things were definitely back to normal.
