May Day

Lee Crane stepped into the Radio Room of the Seaview only to be greeted with the sight of an exhausted Communications Officer.  “How you holding up, Sparks?” he asked with genuine concern, knowing that the man had been hard at it all day.

Sparks gave him a tired grin.  “I’m fine, sir.  Just a busy day.”

Lee nodded, but knew he’d be tired himself if he’d had to keep up the pace that Sparks had today.  He also knew that Spark’s shift was up in about twenty minutes.  “Well, I’ll hold down the fort for a little while.  Why don’t you cut out early and take a well deserved break?”

Sparks shrugged as he rose, the look on his face a knowing one.  “All right, sir.  Thank you.”

“Thank you for keeping everything organized and everyone from getting out of hand,” Lee told him.

“Oh, that’s okay, sir.  It’s not like it wasn’t expected,” Sparks replied as he ducked out of the room.

Lee grinned a little and nodded at the man’s vanishing back, than sat at the radio to make his own communication.  It would be the last in a long line of them as the day drew to a close.  A soft voice buzzed over the headset he had pressed to one ear, drawing him back to the matter at hand.  “Hi Mom.  Happy Mother’s Day,” Lee said into the mike, glad that the Admiral allowed these calls.
