I couldn't resist this Cross-Over, and I consider it one of my better pieces.  Before there was Capt. Kirk, there was Capt. Crane.  This story is my Season 4 Finale.  Any new stories I write from season four precede this one, and any that fall after this story fall into what I call Season 5, and continues the adventures of Seaview and her crew...at least in my universe!

Of Captains and Legends

by Lynn

Lee Crane sat perched on the Admiral's desk as Harriman Nelson leaned back into his chair.  It was a moment of easy camaraderie, the two of them sharing a laugh over Lee's description of his latest ONI assignment.  Johnson had sent him in to watch a certain dignitary in a third world country.  He had spent most of his days hiding out in a barn full of animals and the nights looking for the intelligence he was sent to retrieve.  By the time he made it to the extraction point, he smelled of goats and sheep.  The Navy Seals who had secured his extraction threatened to put him over the zodiac!  In the end, the captain of the small submarine that had picked him up had consented to an unusually long shower to rid him of the lingering smell.

Harry was still laughing when two columns of sparkly light materialized in the Admiral's cabin.  Lee started to reach for the intercom to call for the Master at Arms when the sparkly lights took the form of two men.

“Wait Captain Crane, we just want to talk to you.” The man speaking held his hand out toward Lee in an effort to gain his attention.

Lee looked at the two men, the brownish blond haired one in a gold tunic being the one who spoke.  The taller man in the blue tunic had some interesting ears, but it was the use of his name that caught his attention.

“Who are you, what do you want here?”  Lee was standing at this point, he had sized them up as being aliens right away.  Nearly every encounter they had with beings from other worlds had proven to be bad news, and Lee moved instinctively into a position to protect Harry.

“We're here to help, Admiral Nelson is in danger.”  The man in the gold tunic was clearly the superior officer, doing the speaking and Lee noticed that he wore three gold braids on his tunic sleeve whereas the other wore two.

“Danger?”  Harry stepped closer, more curious than anything.  Aliens had come in many shapes and sizes in his experience, some even taking human form.  But their strange mode of transportation into the cabin dictated that they move carefully.

“Yes, Sir,” the man in gold spoke.  Lee's eyebrows narrowed slightly as he noticed the obvious respect that was afforded the Admiral.

“My name is Captain James T Kirk from the United Federation of Planets, this is my first officer, Commander Spock.”  Kirk was demonstrative with his hands as he spoke, carrying authority and command easily, yet his approach was gentle.

“We're from your future...300 years in your future.”

Lee took a quick glance at Harry who was obviously doing some sizing up of his own.  They shared a quick glance as Lee moved closer toward the Admiral.

“You said that the Admiral was in danger?”  Lee said, trying to get more information out of their unexpected and uninvited guests.

“We came here just ahead of a Klingon war vessel, when they arrive they will make an attempt on Admiral Nelson's life.  We're here to prevent that.”

“Gentleman, your arrival here gives us some evidence of your superiority in transportation, and I have no doubt that one of those items on your belt is a weapon of some kind.  By the looks of Commander Spock I'm willing to believe he's alien to our world.  But what can you tell me to convince me that you are in fact, from our future?”

Lee noticed that as Harry delivered his statement that Spock had reacted with raised eyebrows, as if he was slightly impressed with Harry's reasoning.  It was curious, but he still wasn't convinced that they were here to protect Harry.

Kirk motioned toward his first officer, “Mr. Spock?”  His voice indicating that Spock should proceed with some prearranged task.

“Krueger's presence in my body was like being pushed into a small corner of my own mind, it was suffocating and the darkness devastating.”  Spock's recitation took Lee by surprise as his face registered shock.  He had not discussed his experience with anyone except Harry.  Not even Chip knew the depths of the struggle he went through after Krueger.  But Spock's words were exactly the description Lee had in his mind.

Lee stepped forward, his face showing deep concern for the very private experience that they obviously knew about.

“How do you know about that?”

“From Admiral Nelson's memoirs.”

Lee turned in shock, “You wrote about that?”  Lee couldn't help feel a pang of betrayal.  They each had scars from that incident, but their friendship had been strengthened in the end.  Still, it was too personal to share in a book.

“No, at least not yet Lee,” Harry offered his captain, realizing that these two men most certainly were who they claimed to be.

“Actually Captain Crane, the memoirs were published under both of your names,” Kirk offered hoping to soften the blow that Crane obviously felt.

Lee paced the cabin floor as he thought it all out.  He trusted Harry, there was only one conclusion left, they were from the future.  Lee turned around slowly facing Kirk, “Alright, nobody here on earth except the Admiral would have known that.  I'll accept that you're from our future.  How do I know that you're here to protect the Admiral?”

Kirk motioned with his hands in front of his body, his hands held palm up as he spoke, “I can only offer you our sincerity and the truth.  We're here to protect Admiral Nelson, because if we don't earth's future will be dramatically changed.  In the next few years, one of his inventions will be the catalyst to make space travel a reality.  Not just to the moon, or to neighboring planets, but to distant galaxies.  The United Federation of Planets is based here on earth, it's the binding idea that brought the planets together in peace.  Without Admiral Nelson there will be no breakthrough for space travel, at least not for a long time.  That delay will give the Klingons the time to develop space travel a century earlier than earth, they will conquer this part of the galaxy before we have a chance to form an alliance.  The future is dependent upon the Klingons being stopped.”

“How can you know this for sure?  Surely someone else will fill in the gap?”  Harry stepped closer, it was hard to believe that his untimely death could be so catastrophic to the future.

“Because, Sir,” Mr. Spock spoke with an even tone and without emotion, “it has already happened.”

Lee's forehead creased, “What do you mean, 'It's already happened'?”

Kirk answered in a solemn tone, “We were in your time-line conducting an historical mission in 1968*, everything was as it should have been.  We finished our mission but when he returned to our own earth time-line, everything was changed.  The Klingon's had colonized earth and subjugated its inhabitants.  Since our computers still held its data and was not affected by the new time-line, Mr. Spock was able to track down the exact moment that history changed.  It was the untimely death of Admiral Nelson.”

Both Lee and Harry looked at one another.  Lee had no doubt about the idea of one of Harry's inventions being so important, his direct and indirect influence had already brought about a myriad of gadgets and inventions that had quietly revolutionized electronics.  The marvel of Seaview was just one example, and many of his inventions were quietly put into place and used secretly in the military.

“And these beings...the Klingons, have access to the same mode of transportation you have?”  Harry questioned thinking through the problem of having beings materialize out of thin air all over the boat.

“Yes, once their ship arrives, they will transport directly onto your vessel.”  Captain Kirk's eyes were expressive and he was obviously desperate for them to believe him, but he held himself as a man who was accustomed to difficult tasks, and who was obviously gifted in diplomacy.

“Just what do you have in mind, Captain Kirk?”  Lee's voice was schooled and in control.  He had enough experience with strange, curious and impossible events to not rule anything out.  He would be cautious, but he was also a good read of people, and he decided to trust Kirk, at least until he was convinced otherwise.  Still, he wasn't about to turn Harry's life over to two strangers.

“Spock and I would like your permission to stay aboard.  We don't know exactly when they will attempt the time jump, so we'll have to be ready.  If they penetrate both our security efforts,” Kirk smiling as he delivered that, knowing that Captain Crane wouldn't leave security solely to strangers, “then we could transport him to our ship for safety.”  He raised his hands to calm the obvious concerns of Captain Crane, “Only as a last resort, but he would be safe there.”

“Your spaceship is in orbit?”  Harry asked, curious about how they had evaded earth's own monitoring systems, a system he had helped to brainstorm.

“My starship is in orbit, yes.  We're able to orbit stealthily using our deflector shields.”  Kirk's look turned more serious, “I'm afraid the Klingons will be just as hidden when they arrive.  We can’t' risk a space battle in this time-line, so we'll have to fight them here.”

Lee started pacing again, “How many Klingons would you expect to board us?”

“They'll send down four or five, they'll have to lower their cloaking device to beam over, so they'll only send one detachment.  But you need to understand that they're a warrior people, conquerors...ruthless.”

Lee nodded his head obviously having come to a conclusion, and stepped towards Kirk reaching his hand out as he spoke, “Permission granted.  Welcome aboard Captain Kirk.”

They shook hands and Kirk sported a pleasant, satisfied smile.  Lee reached over and offered his hand to Spock as well, “Welcome aboard Mr. Spock.”

“Well Gentleman, I suppose if you're going to spend a little time with us we should get you accommodations and a tour.”  Admiral Nelson was hospitable as he too offered his hand to their guests.

“Thank you Admiral, we don't want to interrupt your current mission any more than necessary,” Kirk offered graciously.

“It is important that whatever your work is here and now continues, so that our presence doesn't do any harm to the future,” Spock's statement a reminder to the precarious position they found themselves in when dealing with time travel.

“Yes, I can see where one would have to be very careful,” Harry agreed as they began to walk toward the door.

“Mr. Spock is my Science Officer, I think you may enjoy some common interests Admiral Nelson.”  Kirk's smile was very sincere and something else...proud.  “Admiral, I want you know that this is an extreme honor.  Your books are read by every cadet in Star Fleet.”

Harry cleared his throat in embarrassment, and Lee flashed a brilliant smile, “Get used to it Admiral, even in the future you can't get away from it.”  Harry's “I'll get you later look” wasn't missed by either Lee or Kirk as they exchanged a smile between them.

“Captain Kirk, if you'll come with me, I'll need to bring my Executive Officer up on this.”  Lee motioned with his hand toward the door and Captain Kirk followed, as Harry and Spock headed to the lab.

Lee sat at his desk in his cabin, as Chip paced the floor back and forth.  Kirk sat in the visitor's chair with his elbows resting on the arms of the chair, his hands folded together watching the scene unfold before him.

“You're sure about this Lee?  We've had a lot dealings with aliens, and I got to tell you, that last trip to Venus wasn't much fun.”

Lee nodded knowingly, “I know Chip, but there's too much at stake...and I believe Captain Kirk is telling the truth.”

Chip stopped pacing, looked at Kirk and then back at Lee.  He returned to his proper place of XO in his demeanor and stood straight.

“Aye, Sir.”  He turned to Kirk and nodded, “Welcome aboard Captain.”

“Thank you Mr. Morton.”

“Chip, have the Quarter Master assign them guest cabins, they'll be with either myself or Admiral Nelson at all times.  Notify the Master at Arms, I want a security detail at all vital areas of the boat.  We need to be focused on our current mission, but the crew needs to be battle ready, break out the laser guns as well.”

“Aye, Skipper.  I'll take care of it.”  Chip left and Captain Kirk gave an approving look.

“Your crew is well trained.”

“Chip's the best XO in or out of the Navy, the Admiral's working on a new boat, and Chip's going to Skipper her.”  Lee stopped and laughed as Kirk looked on with a wondering expression on his face, “It's not like I'm telling you any secrets now is it?”

Kirk smiled and shared an easy laugh.

“I've got to check the Control Room, you interested in a tour?”

Kirk's eyes twinkled with the smile on his face, “Captain Crane, I thought you'd never ask.”

“Lee, my name is Lee.”

“My friends call me Jim.”  Lee nodded in acknowledgment and the two left with Lee giving a tour along the way.

* * * * *

Jim was enjoying a cup of hot coffee, it was strong but the brew was definitely better than what the service modules produced on board the Enterprise.  Watching Lee command his boat was a great pleasure for him, he was a legend and didn't even know it.  Another pleasure had been watching the interaction between Nelson and Crane, it was evident from their book that they had a strong connection and he could relate well as Spock and McCoy were also friends of the same calibre.

He had enjoyed the history lesson he was receiving, and could have almost taken this like a dream vacation if it weren't for the impending danger that was hanging over them.  In another time-line, Admiral Nelson was ruthlessly killed by an armed Klingon death squad.  It was years before his time, in fact, Admiral Nelson should have lived to see Lee's grandchildren; their surrogate grandfather having been quite an influence on the Crane family.

Lee finished making his rounds around the control room floor, a shift change had occurred and Jim watched the age old naval tradition of the change of command with pride.

“Mr. O'Brien, you have the con.”

“Aye, Sir.  You are relieved, I have the con.”

Most of the decorum in Star Fleet was based on the naval traditions he was witnessing right now.  It was an incredible opportunity before him, that alone would be enough, but to meet a man that he had only read about was truly amazing.

Lee made his way towards Kirk addressing him as he arrived in the nose, “We'll be station keeping here tonight, we'll collect some samples of the area tomorrow morning and also checking some seismic sensors in the area.  I'm afraid nothing too exciting this time around,” Lee laughed.  “Then again, this is what Seaview was designed for, exploration.”  He picked up the coffee carafe and refilled his mug.

“Our vessels are very much alike.  The Enterprise is a military flagship, but she was built for exploration of the galaxy.”

“The Enterprise?  We've had many ships called Enterprise throughout our Naval History.”

“Yes I know, my ship was named in the same naval tradition,” Kirk added before taking another sip of coffee.

Lee's eyes were expressive as he asked, “What's it like up there?”  His interest truly sincere.

“A lot like sailing the seas, just a different view.”  Jim had to be careful with information about the future, but he felt he owed Lee something for the trust he had afforded him.

Lee looked out the great windows of Seaview thinking as he changed the subject to something a bit weightier.  “What kind of fire power can I expect when the Klingons arrive?”

“They'll have phasers, much like your laser guns, but faster and deadlier.  They also use disrupters, they're outlawed in the Federation, devices they use for discipline.”

Lee nodded in understanding.  “I've been thinking about the problem of affecting the future.  It's a very dangerous undertaking, and I appreciate your concern for Admiral Nelson.  I can tell that you truly appreciate the man he is, as well as his considerable knowledge.”

“He's a legend in my time Lee.  Meeting him now has just confirmed that my admiration of the past was well placed.”

Lee nodded in agreement, “And the same goes for my entire crew.  I can't consider any one of them expendable here, surely their futures must matter as well.”  Lee turned his attention back to the window as he spoke.

“I don't think it can ever be said that a soul has made no contribution to the course of the future.  Even if a person never does anything to further or advance technology, or the arts, or whatever may be society's idea of success, they are still valuable to the future.  Their achievements are their children and the lines of descent that would be cut-off.  There would be thousands maybe even millions of descendants that would never be if just one man dies before his time.  It could be as catastrophic as losing the Admiral.”  Lee turned his face back toward Jim as he registered his response.

“You're absolutely right.  As soon as someone steps into the past from the future there are very real dangers.  There would be repercussions for every untimely death, or disappearance.  We learned that the first time we ended up here in your time-line when we passed through an unexpected time warp.**”

Lee turned his face directly to meet Jim's eyes speaking with quiet sincerity, “If you've read the Admiral's memoirs then you know I'll do whatever it takes to keep him safe.  The trick will be keeping everyone else here safe at the same time.”

“That's why we're here, Lee.  It would be best if you and your crew let Spock and I take the chances.  I can't risk a larger security detail because of the dangers of contaminating the past with future ideas and technology.  It all has to happen in the natural course of time.  But I can promise you this, we will do everything we can to keep the Admiral safe.”

“I don't consider your lives expendable either, Jim.  But I understand what's at stake, for both our futures.”

* * * * *

“Fascinating.”  Spock's one word summed up the sea anemone's movement quite well, if Harry did say so himself.  Harry was truly enjoying this man from Vulcan.  His non-emotional approach to life was refreshing, but odd at the same time.  Harry was a man of intense emotions, yet he considered himself able to observe without preconceived ideas, drawing his conclusions based on fact.

Harry reviewed his on-going experiments logging his findings as he briefed Spock on the various potentials of each of the experiments.  Though Spock showed no real emotion, Harry did register a sense of satisfaction from the Vulcan.

“The plankton samples we retrieve today will be added to these observances,” Harry explained pointing to another experiment, “They have the potential of providing a growth catalyst for farming wheat and rice.  But admittedly, it's an ideal that we have not been able to make true progress on yet.”

This specimen was previously unknown, we discovered it last year.  The ocean is still full of sea creatures and plants that we've never seen or cataloged.  Probably not as interesting as some of the creatures you've encountered, but exciting just the same.”

Spock's eyebrows lifted slightly, “I consider all knew exploration fascinating, Sir.  It has been most satisfying seeing your experiments.  I find sea creatures intriguing.”

Harry's small tight smile was familiar to those who knew him, he was enjoying Mr. Spock's intellect immensely.

* * * * *

Lee and Jim had just taken a tour of the boat ending back up in the Control Room.  Lee had rethought his plan of action and had instructed the crew that they were to cooperate fully, leaving the security detail to himself and their “guests.”  He reasoned that it was the best way to protect the men from an untimely death.  Lee and his crew were no strangers to danger or death, but having beings from the future here could change the destiny of his men and their families.  This was a whole new ball game.

Kirk had watched the professionalism of the crew and had appreciated the easy relaxed attitude on board, though military discipline and decorum were still in place.  He had noticed several of the crewmen who had been what he perceived as “protective” over their captain, stealthily watching both he and Lee.  The one in the red jumpsuit, Kowalski, had made a couple of discerning glances his way.  Jim had to smile at their dedication to Crane.  It wasn't unexpected, he had read the memoirs and other historical data on the Seaview and was well aware of the many dangerous situations that Crane had brought this crew through.  They were loyal, and Crane had earned every bit of it.

Jim stood with his back to the Herculite windows watching the Control Room, as Lee was at the chart table marking the next course correction when the peace and calm was interrupted by a whine and a red light that materialized into five Klingons.

Their weapons were drawn, and Chip started toward one, when Lee shouted, “Stand down men!”  Instantly, the order was obeyed as Lee moved forward slowly.  The Klingon before him was several inches taller than him.  Their ears were pointed, and the ridges on their foreheads were distinctive.  Their clothes indicated a warrior look as did the menacing weapons that were drawn.

“Who are you and what do you want?”  Lee asked the Klingon closest to him.

The Klingon looked at Lee seeming to size him up, “So you're the famous Captain Crane.  You don't look very impressive to me.”

Lee returned his glare refusing to back down at the Klingon's clear attempt to intimidate him.  The Klingon turned his attention toward Jim who was flanked on his left by a Klingon warrior.  “I didn't expect to find you here Kirk.  It is indeed a great pleasure, my men and I will be great heroes as we take down both you and Admiral Nelson in the same day.”  Krohn pulled Kirk's communicator and phaser from his belt as he spoke.

Lee felt his blood start to boil, but kept his cool as he sized up the situation.  He took in the positions of the Klingon guards, two were in the control room training their weapons on his crew, one had positioned himself at the radio shack hovering over Sparks.  One flanked Jim, as the leader walked freely among them.  Jim had said four or five would come, it looked like they were all here.  That meant they didn't have the Admiral yet.  He and Captain Kirk had previously agreed that one of them would alert the Admiral personally if using the boat's communication was impossible.

He had one guard and the leader inside the nose, if he could get to the crash doors, either he or Jim could get to the spiral stairs and warn Harry.  He was just working this out when the leader walked menacingly around Jim.  It appeared to Lee that the two had met before, and if their antipathy for one another was any indication, he would guess that Kirk had gotten the best of the Klingon in the past...future, or whatever.

The leader nodded with his head as Jim's guard ushered him forward towards the spiral staircase.  “I've waited a long time for this Kirk,” as he delivered a devastating blow to Jim's midsection.  Lee's instinct was to step forward to help, but he held his place waiting for the best time to lunge for the crash doors.  Jim doubled over and then recovered; the Klingon delivered an open handed blow to Kirk's face, as a small stream of blood spilled from the corner of Jim's mouth.

The guard was standing back, enjoying the treatment of the Enterprise's captain, but still too close to Lee.  It appeared that the Klingons were in no hurry to locate Harry, as the leader seemed quite content to focus his attention on Jim.

“Now Captain Kirk, I'm going to deal with you, very slowly.”  The leader pulled out a device that was slightly larger than the Klingon's hand.  He depressed a button and the device made a whining sound as if it were charging up.  He pushed Jim against the spiral staircase and placed the disrupter on the golden tunic at the middle of his chest.

As soon as the device made contact Jim let out a scream.  The Klingon released the disrupter and smiled, then moved to a different spot and pressed again.  As Jim screamed in pain, Lee's instinct to help was too strong.  He lunged forward hitting the Leader in the back with a double fisted blow.  He released the disrupter and Jim crumbled to the floor alongside the spiral staircase.

The guard was instantly on Lee pulling him by the arms back towards the chart table.  The Klingon leader stood up and turned with fire in his eyes toward Lee.  “So, Captain Crane does have some bite in him after all?  You will soon learn that your insolence will not be tolerated.”

He landed a blow to Lee's gut that dropped him to his knees.  The Klingon was stronger than humans, he figured that one out right away.  He looked over at Jim who was looking lucidly at Lee, the Klingon guard was standing over him, but more interested in the Leader's latest conquest.  Lee gave Jim a look that said “be ready” as he diverted his eyes away and started to rise from his hands and knees.

His ribs were met by a swinging kick from the Leader that sent Lee sprawling another foot closer to his objective.  Lee rolled back to his hands and knees trying to rise as he was kicked again.  The blows were doing damage, but Lee needed to reach the crash door button at the end of the chart table.  One more blow should do it, as Lee struggled to rise again effectively inviting the Klingon to continue his lesson over the captain.

When the blow struck Lee allowed the inertia to move him as close to the chart table as possible.  He reached up, seeking to use the chart table to rise as the Klingon watched, satisfied that he was going to teach this human a lesson.  As Lee rose his fingers found the button he was reaching for and the crash doors lived up to their name, crashing to an instant closed position.

* * * * *

Jim lay on his back after collapsing.  The disrupter shots were devastating, but he turned to his side as he saw Krohn, the Klingon leader advancing on Lee.  This was bad...very bad.  He watched Lee take a blow with empathy.  Krohn stood over Lee taunting the great human legend as nothing more than a weakling.  Lee struggled to rise and moved onto his hands and knees, he looked over at Jim and imparted something that they both understood.  One of them had to get to Admiral Nelson, and it looked like it was going to be Kirk.

This wasn't the way Jim had planned it, but he watched as Lee allowed himself to be kicked into a position closer and closer to the chart table.  He recognized Lee's movements as purposeful, he had used this tactic a time or two himself.  Jim stole a glance at his guard, he obviously didn't feel that Captain Kirk was a threat and looked on at Krohn's merciless kicks to Crane with delight.

Finally, Lee reached a position close enough to the chart table to use it to raise himself off the floor.  Krohn was shouting his disgust at the weak attempt of Crane to continue to rise.  Jim didn't actually know what the diversion was going to be, but he knew it was coming.  Suddenly two silver doors came crashing together and joined in the center, cutting off the control room from the nose and leaving only two Klingons on their side.

Jim swung his legs taking the feet of his guard out from under him, as soon as the guard was down he delivered two rapid blows to his face and climbed over him rushing up the staircase as he did.  He wasn't sure what was happening with Krohn right now, he only knew that he had to get Admiral Nelson to the safety of the Enterprise before the future was rewritten with his death.

The last day of taking tours of the boat had prepared him for the run, he knew exactly where the lab was and rounded the corners quickly.  He could hear the sound of a Klingon running after him and burst into the laboratory door taking Spock and Nelson by surprise.  Immediately Spock pulled out his communicator and flipped it open.

“Three to beam up, emergency.”

The order was complied with immediately as the Klingon arrived in the laboratory in time to see three sparkly light columns fade into nothing.

* * * * *

Lee hit the button.  The loud crash and the effective cutting-off of the control room surprised his attacker.  He used the moment as the only opportunity he had to make sure that Jim could get away.  He lunged forward throwing his dead weight into the Leader taking both of them to the ground.  He got in one punch to Krohn's face when the Klingon recovered, throwing Lee backward while pulling his weapon out and pointing it inches from his face.

Lee had no choice but to lay there, breathing hard trying to will his broken ribs to stay in place.  But even so, a small satisfied smile crossed his face as he registered the clicks of Kirk taking the spiral staircase to the Admiral.

“After him!”  Krohn yelled at the guard just getting off the floor.  He reached over and depressed the same button that Lee had hit and the crash doors opened to reveal his crew standing with their hands in the air.  Lee could see that Chip was down, but was relieved to see him begin to stir, reaching for a small black burnt spot on his shoulder where he had been stunned.

Krohn stood menacingly over Lee, and Lee could tell that he was about to catch the full fury of Klingon rage.

A few minutes later the guard returned with the news that had made it all worthwhile, “Kirk and Nelson have beamed off the ship.”

Lee's satisfied smile didn't go unnoticed by Krohn whose fury was being displayed in the redness of his eyes.  Krohn lowered himself into a squatting position over Lee and picked up the disrupter lying on the floor.

“Time for you to die, Crane!”

He put the disrupter to the middle of Lee's chest as the pain flared sending his body contorting in several directions as Krohn held his shoulder down with a knee.  The scream he produced was out of his control as the burning sensation permeated his chest.  Krohn didn't pull the disrupter off as he had with Kirk, he kept it in place laughing at Lee's distress.

Lee's pain was palpable as the crew was kept at bay by drawn phasers.  Chip stood, barely held back by the phaser that was pointed directly at his midsection.

Just then, five columns of light materialized into three men in red tunics with Kirk and Spock.  Phasers were shot almost as soon as the men beamed aboard and just as quickly the five Klingons laid in a heap on the deck.

“Secure the Klingons,” Captain Kirk yelled to the men in red as Seaview's crew also pitched in to make sure that they were no longer a threat.

Chip ran to Lee as soon as the Klingons were downed and found him shaking uncontrollably.  “Get Doc Jamieson here, fast!”

“Lee?  Come on Lee.”

Lee opened his eyes, but much of the fire was gone, his eyes were glossy, and full of pain.  “Chip, crew...all safe?”

“Aye Skipper, no casualties.”  Lee swallowed hard nodding slightly his understanding, as Jim knelt down beside him.  Lee's head lolled to the side finding Captain Kirk.

“The Admiral?”

“Safe aboard the Enterprise.”

A gasp escaped Lee's mouth as breathing became harder, “Chip, you have the Con...take good care of her for me.”

Chip registered the obvious “goodbye” that Lee was giving and looked up to see Jamie coming in the aft hatch.

“Lee, hold on.  Jamie's here, just hold on.”

But Lee could barely hold his eyes open.  He was sure once they closed they wouldn't open again, he felt as if everything that was him was slipping away.

* * * * *

Jim stood, pulled open his communicator with a flip of his hand and spoke into it, “Kirk to Enterprise, get McCoy down here fast!”

Spock pulled Kirk by the elbow and whispered in his ear, “Jim, you can't interfere with the time-line.”

“That's just it Spock.  Lee Crane is not supposed to die here today, not by Klingons and certainly not by a weapon that won't be invented for another 200 years.”

Another beam of light materialized into a man in a blue tunic who squatted down next to Jamie and began hovering a small device over Lee's middle.  Jamie watched in wonder, there was nothing he could do, Lee was fading fast.

“Jim, I've got to get this man to sickbay now, or he'll die.”

Chip rose to object, but Lee's hand reached out and floundered at his leg.  “It's okay, Chip,” he cracked a weak smile and Chip responded.  Jim moved everyone from Lee's side as McCoy spoke.

“Two to beam up, straight to sickbay.”

Immediately McCoy and Lee disappeared as the beam faded to nothing.  Chip stood there looking at the place where Lee once lay.  Jamie rested his hand on Chip's shoulder, “There was nothing I could do for him Chip, maybe they can save him.”

The Enterprise security detail beamed away along with the five Klingon prisoners, leaving only Kirk and Spock on board, as Captain Kirk approached Chip Morton, now acting captain of the Seaview.

Chief Sharkey also approached Chip practically wringing his hands.  “Mr. Morton, are you gonna go and make sure the Captain's OK?”

“No Chief, the Skipper gave me the Con.  I'll take care of Seaview until he comes back.”

Chip turned to Captain Kirk, “Can we expect any more visitors?”

“No,” Kirk explained, “my ship has reported that the Klingon warbird has left orbit.”

Chip nodded his head, his face was grim as he faced Kirk, “How we can stay in contact with your ship?”

Kirk turned toward his first officer, “Mr. Spock will secure the frequency from your radio operator, we'll monitor the communications.”

Mr. Spock turned and moved toward the radio shack, and returned a moment later, as Kirk continued, “I'm sorry about Captain Crane, Mr. Morton, but my CMO is the best around.  I wouldn't count him out yet.”

A tight smile formed on Chip's face, “Captain Kirk, I'd never count Lee Crane out of anything.”

Kirk and Spock moved off to the side, as Kirk flipped his communicator once again, “Kirk to Enterprise.  Two to beam up.”

* * * * *

Kirk and Spock beamed aboard the Enterprise and were met by a pacing Admiral Nelson who had been kept in the transporter room.

“What's happening on Seaview?”  Harry had been kept in the dark and had enough.  He was stuck in a strange room, with strangers wearing red tunics and looking very much like security guards.  He had seen the security detail beam up with the Klingons in tow, but knew little else of the goings on below.

“Your boat is fine, there was one casualty; Captain Crane has been beamed directly to sickbay with a life threatening injury.”

Harry's face registered each phrase of the sentence, going from relief to concern instantly.  “Where's Lee, I need to be there.”

Jim looked away, thinking through a myriad of problems having one of the greatest inventors and thinkers in earth's history aboard a futuristic vessel and the opportunities for messing with the future.  In the end, he looked back at Harry and sported a weak surrendered smile.

“Just don't try and figure out how anything works!”

Spock's eyebrows rose in concern, but Jim just answered with a shrug, “I seriously doubt there isn't anything here he hasn't already thought of,” and motioned Harry to follow him.  They barely took a few steps when a ship wide call hailed Captain Kirk.  Jim reached over to the bulkhead and depressed a button speaking into it as a female voice answered.

“Sir, Mr. Scott wishes to inform you that the Klingon warbird is making its run for the sun.”

“Very well.  Inform Mr. Scott that I'll be right there.”  He turned to Harry, “Spock here will see you to sickbay.  I'll be there when I can.”  Kirk then stepped up to a door which slid open as he neared it.  Spock and Harry followed after him and Harry could see him running for what looked like an elevator shaft.

* * * * *

Harry paced the floor of Dr. McCoy's office while Spock sat at the doctor's workstation with his hands folded together at a point.

“I'm sorry Mr. Spock.  My obvious show of emotion must be disturbing to you.”

“No Sir.  I am quite accustomed to humans and their emotions.”  Spock's non-emotional reply wasn't misinterpreted by Harry, he understood that Spock's race dealt with life purely on the logical side.  Harry liked to think that he was rather logical himself, but his emotions were as much a part of him as his rational.

“We humans are a bit of an oddity sometimes.  Did you know that Captain Crane is one of the finest officers I've ever served with?  What am I saying?  Of course you do, you probably know more about us than I do right now.”

Harry's pacing had picked up speed as he thought out what he wanted to say.  He wasn't even sure why he was vocalizing his thoughts just now, except that he inherently knew that Spock wouldn't betray what he was about to say.

“Lee Crane is more than my Captain, he's my friend, my very dear friend.  And you know what?  We never speak of it.  Never.  We just go from day to day enjoying it.  Now, I'm faced with the possibility of not having that friend in my life and I'm scared to death Mr. Spock.  I bet that blows your idea of who Harriman Nelson is right out the window!”  Harry threw his hands up dramatically in the air as he spoke.  And then calmed himself and moved to sit in a chair across from Spock.

“So you see, we are much alike in many ways.  You do not display emotions, and while I can't exactly say that about myself, there are some emotions and feelings that I have which I keep very safe and protected inside.  It's just times like these that make me rethink that policy.”  Harry smiled and shook his head to himself at his own conclusion.

Spock was in deep thought over Admiral Nelson's comments.  They indeed were more alike than he would ever like to admit.  As much as he had tried to deny it to himself, he had feelings of friendship for Jim Kirk that went beyond the logical relationship of two people working closely together.  Jim Kirk had become his brother, and the human side of Spock knew that meant something deeper than logic.  So like Admiral Nelson, he kept his emotions safe and hidden inside as well.

Just then the door slid open with a “whoosh” as Captain Kirk joined Harry and Spock.  “Anything Spock?”

“Dr. McCoy is in surgery at this moment, Sir.”

Jim nodded his head, “Alright, I'll relieve you here.  Head on up to the bridge and hold down the fort.”  Jim's easy smile was ignored by Spock as he followed all decorum with his reply.

“Aye Sir.”

The door had barely closed when the side door that led to sickbay opened and Dr. Leonard McCoy entered the room.  His tired smile giving Harry reason to sigh in relief.

“Doctor?”  Harry asked, wanting to know all the details.

“He's out of surgery, and is responding to treatment.  He's very weak, but I think he'll fully recover,” there was an audible release of tension in the room as McCoy continued, “but I need to keep him aboard for the next three days.  He's too weak to leave to twentieth century medicine.”  McCoy smiled trying to soften the blow for the Admiral's sake.

“Can you stay that long Captain Kirk?”  Harry inquired, relieved about Lee, but unsure if staying was an option.

“Admiral, we have all the time in the world.”  His statement was met with a smile as they both laughed at the clever play on words.

* * * * *

Lee felt so very tired, even as he began to wake.  His body felt heavy, but he was comfortable.  He could hear someone talking, it sounded far away and he realized that he must be back in sickbay, although the familiar smell of alcohol and witch hazel was missing.  He felt an unfamiliar pattern in the “engines” and decided he needed to open his eyes to see where he was and what was going on.

About the time he managed to get his eyes open, his cognizant reasoning returned and he remembered the Klingons, Seaview and the Admiral.  He heard his name and turned his head to see Harry, standing over him with a smile on his face.  Lee returned the smile, his eyes looking around.

“Not Seaview.”

“No Lee, definitely not Seaview.”  Lee's eyes narrowed questioning Harry's answer when he heard another voice speak on his left.

“You're on my ship.” Lee lolled his head slightly to see Jim Kirk, his smile friendly and contagious.

“The Enterprise?”  Lee asked as Jim nodded in response.

Lee chuckled and turned his face toward Harry, “I finally make it to space and I'm flat my back in sickbay.”  Harry shared the chuckle, relieved at seeing Lee so awake and aware.

“Yes, and you're going to stay that way for the next three days.  I've already conferred with Doctor Jamieson and I know all about your early escapes so don't mess with me.”

Jim's head nodded toward McCoy, “This is Dr. McCoy our CMO, he gets a bit pushy here in sickbay.”

Lee responded in kind, “I think it’s universal.”  His head turned to the Admiral, “Seaview and the crew?”

“Rest easy Lee, Seaview is fine.  There were no other casualties,” Harry answered re-assuredly.

“The bad guys?”

“They've headed home,” Jim's satisfied look was comforting at that moment and Lee allowed himself a moment of relief to truly set in.  The Admiral was safe, and the future secure.  He suddenly felt rather tired as a bit of pain began to make itself known.

“Gentleman, I think it's time we let my patient get some rest.”  Dr. McCoy motioned with his hands to usher out Harry, Jim, and Spock, who had been standing quietly by.

“Admiral?”  At Lee's call Harry turned back, “It's really good to see you.”

“I was thinking the same thing, Lad.”  He squeezed Lee's shoulder and turned to leave as McCoy gave Lee a hypo shot.  Lee felt relief immediately.

“Good stuff Doc,” he said as his eyes got heavy and he drifted off to a pleasant sleep.

* * * * *

Jim caught McCoy before he left sickbay pulling him aside by the arm as Spock escorted Harry out.

“Bones, will it be safe to leave him in three days with this century's medical knowledge?”

“Jim,” McCoy's southern accent began to draw out as he spoke, “my tricorder registered more projectile wounds, knife wounds, broken ribs and bones, concussions...well let's just say his medical record rivals even yours.  If Dr. Jamieson has been able to keep him patched together this long, then I'm sure he'll be in good hands by the time I release him.”  McCoy added a smile and Jim returned it, leaving to meet with Admiral Nelson.

Nurse Christine Chapel stood over Lee's bed with a chart in her hands logging her patient's vitals with her computerized notepad.  Sickbay was darkened except for the lights over his bunk as she prepared to change his bandage and administer his medication.  She pulled the sickbay blanket down to his torso as she removed the bandage to debride the disrupter burn with her laser debrider tool.

Christine noticed several scars, bullet wounds, although she was unfamiliar with the exact weapon used she could surmise it was a projectile of some kind.  Down on his lower side was an old wound that was several inches wide, a knife wound.  Her face showed concern as she reached down and lightly traced the scar with her finger.

She knew all about Captain Lee Crane.  Every cadet that ever graduated from the academy did.  His book was required reading for ancient strategy and tactics.  The course was a cadet favorite, it was the stuff legends were made of, better than Homer because it was real.  She had seen his picture in the   same book years ago and was convinced that the photo didn't do him justice.

She started to debride the burns when she looked down and noticed that her patient was watching her.

She smiled, “Well hello Captain Crane.”

He returned her smile, “Hello Nurse...?”

“Chapel.”

“Nurse Chapel.”  Lee took a breath, obviously in pain.

“I have something for the pain.”

“No, please.  I'd rather not sleep my entire time on board,” His smile was devastatingly charming.

“OK, but remember, I can see your pain levels,” pointing to the monitor above Lee's head, “if it spikes you get the hypo.”

“Deal.”

“I'm going to need to debride your burns and redress your wound.”  He nodded as she began her work.

“What's your ship's compliment?”

“Four hundred and thirty,” she answered as the laser debrider extrapolated the dead cells.  It was painful, but bearable.

“Captain Crane, are you sure you're not ready for the pain medication?”  She asked, knowing he was uncomfortable.

“No, not yet.  And actually, it's Commander.  My rank is Commander, my title is Captain...better yet, call me Lee.”

“Alright Lee, but you're 'Captain' in front of the brass.”  She smiled as she continued her ministrations, “My name is Christine, I'm the Senior Nurse to the CMO, and you're my star patient.  I'll be here for most of your waking hours.”

Lee closed his eyes a moment and listened, “The engines are smooth, a totally different sound than I'm used to.”

“You can hear them?  I hardly notice them.”

“Every ship or boat has her own sound and feel.”

The pain began to spike and Christine pulled the hypo and administered the pain medication before Lee could argue.

“Thanks Christine...” and he faded off to a blissful sleep.

She smiled to herself as she watched his face soften as the pain faded nearly instantly, finished her work and re-bandaged his wound.  She logged her chart and pulled his blanket higher over his chest, lingering slightly and then turned to leave.

* * * * *

The next morning, Lee woke feeling much better.  He knew where he was even before he opened his eyes.   He was surprised, however, to see Harry standing over him dressed in his dark service blues complete with his full complement of ribbons and awards.

“Hello Sir.”

“How are you feeling today Lee?”  Harry's concern was less strained than yesterday, but he could tell it was still there.

“Much better, mostly tired...It was close, wasn't it?”  Lee remembered feeling like his life was slipping away on Seaview.

“Too close, Lee.”  Harry's concern faded as he sported a genuine smile.

“I didn't expect to see you here, Sir.”

“Well, Captain Kirk and I made a deal.”  Lee's face registered a question and Harry continued, “I traded for the opportunity to stay aboard until it's safe to move you.”

Lee's eyebrows narrowed slightly, “What sort of trade?”

Harry looked a little embarrassed, but Lee could also see he was proud of his deal.  “I'm conducting a series of lectures hosted by Mr. Spock, a Science Symposium on 20th Century Marine Life and Geology.”

The grin on Lee's face widened, it was right up Harry's alley, no wonder he was dressed in his best.

Lee was still smiling when Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock entered sickbay.  Mr. Spock was wearing an obvious dress uniform with several decorations of his own.

“Are you ready Admiral Nelson?”  Mr. Spock's steady voice offering no excitement, but it didn't deter the twinkle in Harry's eyes one bit.

“Knock 'em dead, Sir.”

“I'll see you later, Lee.”

“Aye Sir.”

Harry left with Spock as Jim walked to Lee's bed.

“You're looking better today.”  Jim's smile was genuine, and Lee realized that he liked this man very much; they were a lot alike in many ways.

“I feel better.  Jim, thanks for the Symposium.  I haven't seen the Admiral that excited in a long time.”

“Well, our mission is exploration.  If I had missed this opportunity I might have had a mutiny on my hands.”  Jim's easy banter elicited a smile from both of them as he continued.  “The conference is already standing room only, we're displaying it on the ship's video com to accommodate the interest.”

Lee nodded his understanding, “Thanks for saving my life.  I know three more days here wasn't part of the plan.”  It was a little uncomfortable being the object of so much attention.

“It wasn't your time Lee, and certainly not by aliens using a device that won't be invented for another 200 years.”

“Thanks anyway.”  Their easy conversation was interrupted as Nurse Chapel approached the bed.

“Good morning Captain,” Nurse Chapel said addressing Kirk, “I need to prepare Captain Crane for the skin graft procedure,”

“I'll drop by later, Lee.”  Lee nodded as Nurse Chapel removed his bandage and began the final debriding.

Jim began to leave sickbay, and turned around taking one last look before leaving.  He had come to enjoy Lee's company and felt that given the opportunity, they would be friends.  He was impressed by Lee's command style.  He was confident but not arrogant.  Competent in his duties, and well able to handle tough situations.  He had planned out the diversion they needed handily and carried it off without putting any of his crew in danger.  He was a man of deep conviction, Jim could see that.  It was a rare opportunity when one gets to truly evaluate a legend.  He thought how disappointed it would have been if Captain Crane hadn't lived up to that legend, but he was everything the history books said and more.

His revelry was interrupted as Lee gasped unexpectedly and quickly recovered.

Then, very quietly he heard Nurse Chapel, "I'm sorry, Lee."

"It's okay Christine," Lee replied in a soft airy voice.

Jim smiled a small tight smile to himself, it looks like Lee Crane has impressed someone else besides me, he thought as he left sickbay chuckling to himself.

* * * * *

Lee's skin graft had gone well.  Dr. McCoy had taken a skin cell sample and through 23rd Century medical technology had grown the entire skin graft.  The long healing process was dramatically reduced as was the scarring that would have marred his chest in his own century.

Dr. McCoy was hovering over Lee waving a small device over his chest and reading the results on his tricorder.

"You're healing well, Captain Crane.  Your broken ribs were fused together, I'm afraid I can't do much about the slow healing, it will be about a week before you can take a deep breath again."

Lee couldn't help but smile with that one.  One week for broken ribs!

"You're still very weak, but it's getting better.  I think we can let you sit up today and start you on solid foods again."  McCoy added a pleasant smile that Lee responded to in kind.

"Thank you Dr. McCoy, I appreciate everything you and your staff have done for me."

"It's not every day we get to treat a historical figure like yourself."  McCoy's southern draw escaped his speech as he was apparently relaxed.

"I'm having a little trouble with that thought," Lee admitted, "but thanks just the same."

* * * * *

Harry came to visit as he and Lee ate dinner together.  It was an interesting thought, selecting a meal from a card, depressing a button and having it appear in an instant.  As they were discussing it Harry lifted up his hands in surrender, "I promised Captain Kirk I wouldn't even think about how these things work."

Harry smiled.  Actually, he had thought about some of the things he'd seen.  Like the intercom system that acted like the telephone intercom on his desk.  He considered the options for doing that on Seaview and quickly dismissed it.  He had seen Lee giving orders with his tethered mic while Seaview was in the middle of some drastic rock and rolls.  No, he thought that the tethered mics were still the best option for the boat, but he could see the value in pursuing the idea for law enforcement.  It would be easy to rig a transmitter on the officer's...say shoulder, and then he could just press the microphone when he wanted to talk.  Yes, that might be an idea to pursue...

It felt good to be sitting up, even though Lee's strength was waning.  He enjoyed the time spent with Harry, and was pleased for the Admiral as it was apparent he was having the time of his life aboard the Enterprise.

Harry described the three dimensional chess game that Mr. Spock had introduced him to.  Harry had picked up on the game easily and the match between he and Spock had become something of a spectator sport in the recreation room.  The on-going game had been played over the course of the last few days in two and three hour stints until Mr. Spock had finally check mated and won.  The game had been a lesson in strategy and wit that was apparently appreciated by the crew.

Lee wished he could do a little sightseeing himself, but he had to admit he still felt quite weak.  But each day he had woken here he had felt better than the day before.  Lee hated the weakness he felt; he knew he couldn't make an escape to look around even if he wanted to.  He doubted if his legs would hold him, and McCoy had already told him he was transferring straight from his sickbay to Seaview's sickbay.

So instead, he enjoyed the delight he was seeing in Harry's eyes and decided to be thankful that he was alive.  If everything went as planned, he was going home tomorrow.  As much as he enjoyed what little he had seen of the Enterprise, he longed to be back on his boat.

* * * * *

The sickbay was quiet, all the lights were dim save for the small light that lit the area around the room's only patient.  Lee Crane lay deeply asleep as his last pain medication sent him into a blissful slumber.

A tall dark figure entered the sickbay and walked quietly over to Lee's bed.  He approached the bed with caution, looking first up at the monitors, evaluating the patient's condition.  Feeling satisfied that Crane was deeply asleep he moved closer, watching intensely, studying every line on Lee's face.  He looked down at Lee's hand that was closest to him.  He reached over and fingered the black onyx ring on his left hand, lingering for a moment.  The stranger took a step back as Lee's head lolled over the other direction as he slept.  A small smile appeared and then the stranger left, unnoticed by the sleeping captain.

* * * * *

Jim rounded the corner headed to sickbay.  He was about to do something that he knew Bones would have a fit over; but he was used to busting a few rules, and he was going to enjoy this particular time.  He entered sickbay, finding Lee lying with his eyes closed.  His bed was raised at a 30 degree angle putting him in a semi-sitting position, and he looked much better today.  As he approached the bed Lee's eyes opened and greeted him with a smile.

Jim looked guiltily around the room, and then grinned mischievously, "How about a tour?"

Lee's head shot up, and his smile widened, "A ship's tour?"

"If you can manage the walk, we'll go to the Bridge."  Jim's question was met with an excitement akin to a kid opening presents on his birthday.

Lee threw the cover off his legs, stopping as he looked at his sickbay scrubs, "I need my uniform, I can't go out like this."  Jim's eyes twinkled as he nodded toward an adjoining room.  Lee got the picture and swung his legs off the bed, sitting as he steadied himself for a moment.  Then he slid down and cautiously felt the deck under his feet, when he was sure he was steady he raised his head and Jim knew that the determination he saw there would be enough to pull off this escape.

Lee moved to the adjoining room on his own strength and found his uniform, cleaned and pressed.  He dressed carefully, still feeling the effects of the disrupter's damage as he healed.  He left the dressing area and he and Jim proceeded out of sickbay.

Even the corridors were an amazement to him, Christine had told him that the ship had a crew of 430 men and women.  The latter's uniforms had been a little bit of a surprise, but it wasn't like he'd never seen a mini skirt before.  He was more interested in the vessel.

Jim was enjoying watching Lee's facial expressions, though they were schooled and even though he kept his decorum his satisfaction was noticeable.  Several crewmen greeted Lee warmly, their delight evident in their facial expressions at meeting the 20th Century captain.  Lee enjoyed meeting the crew, but felt slightly self-conscious that they had greeted him before Kirk.

They entered what Lee thought was an elevator and Jim motioned that he should hang onto a hand grip.

"Bridge,” Jim seemed to speak into the air, and the elevator immediately responded.   As the elevator moved Lee was shocked to feel a sideways motion before it shifted to an upwards motion.  The lift seemed to reach its destination, the motion stopped as Jim turned to face Lee.

"Lee, someday you and Admiral Nelson will co-author a book, several in fact.  What you see here today must never be divulged.  We can't lay a trail for future time travelers to follow."  Jim's eyes were expressive but deadly serious.

"I understand, you have my word," he gave a slight smile, "and I'm very good at keeping top secret things secret."  His face turned more serious as he continued, "But you must also understand something.  Your ship and the Klingon ship invaded our orbit without our even knowing it.  It could happen again, and I will do everything in my power to keep the Admiral safe.  We will look for a way to detect such instances in the future, or neither of our futures will be safe."

Captain Kirk smiled a very tight knowing smile, "I would expect nothing less Captain Crane."  Actually, Jim was well aware that SODS, the new Space and Orbit Detection System, would indeed be designed by Harriman Nelson in the next few years.

His smile widened as he stepped forward and the automatic doors slid open.  Jim made a sweeping motion with his right hand inviting Lee onto the Bridge of the Star Fleet flagship, The Enterprise.  Lee stood tall and squared his shoulders, any hint of physical discomfort after nearly dying three days ago was absent as Lee stepped forward into the huge control room of the starship.

The Bridge was busy with crewman and officers in various stations.  It had a circular shape and the control panels were situated around the rounded perimeter.  A woman's voice singing lightly caught his attention.  Her song was familiar and Lee knew the tune.  Jim headed toward a station beyond the woman whose singing provided pleasant background to the hums and soft voices speaking on the Bridge.

Lee stopped at the woman's station; she was an exotic beauty, the fact that she was of African descent wasn’t shocking to him.  His own crew was multi-national, and their skill was not dictated by their color.  Her song was an old Swahili love song that he had heard during his travels along the Mozambique Channel.  Lee stopped at her station and smiled as he spoke.

"Jambo," Lee said, interrupting her song.  His greeting was met with a smile.

Lt. Uhura looked up to see the hazel green eyes of the Captain of the Seaview, her pleasure at his speaking her native tongue completely apparent.

"Unasema Kiswahili?" She said, asking him if he spoke Swahili.

"Kidogo tu," Lee admitted that he knew a little Swahili and finished his answer in English, “I’ve traveled your country a few times."

Jim turned back introducing Uhura, "Captain Crane, this is Lt. Uhura our Senior Communications Officer."

"Nice to meet you Lt. Uhura, and your song is lovely."  Lee smiled politely completely unaware of his considerable charm as she nodded her head in acknowledgment of the tall dark headed captain.

Jim looked over at Uhura as he passed by, is that a blush I see?

Jim ushered Lee from station to station making introductions to various crew members.  He brought Lee forward to the two stations that sat in the center of the room as Jim made the introductions.

"This is Ensign Chekov our Navigator and Lt. Sulu our Helmsman."

"Mr. Chekov, I've had occasion to visit Russia several times," of course Lee omitted the fact that they were covert missions for ONI.  "Mr. Sulu," Lee shook both of their hands, Sulu looked oddly familiar but his easy smile was contagious as Lee smiled back***.  A truly international crew, well more than that, across the floor he saw a blue crewman with antennae for ears.

Lee looked around the Bridge.  This was the Alpha Crew, they were his go-to team like Kowalski, Patterson and Riley were back on Seaview.

Then Lee's eyes were drawn to the large window in front of him, and instinctively he walked toward the bow standing in wonder at the view of the earth before him.  It was breathtaking, nearly intoxicating.  It reminded him of the first time he'd seen the ocean through Seaview's windows.

Jim was sitting in his captain's chair signing off on an electronic note board that a yeoman had brought him as he watched Lee move forward, and moved to stand beside him.

"It's spectacular in any time-line," Jim commented as Lee shook his head in agreement.  Jim noticed the beads of sweat that were forming on Lee's forehead and realized that the exertion was taking its toll.  He was also sure that Bones was going to be missing his patient very soon, it was time to take the tour down to the transporter room.

"It's time Captain Crane," Jim's face carried a pleasant smile as he motioned Lee forward.

"Very Well, Captain Kirk."  Lee took one last look around and followed Jim to the turbolift.  Soon they were inside the lift and the doors slid shut.  Lee leaned heavily against the turbolift's bulkhead, as he held the hand grip and sighed as his body's strength reminded him of his recent ordeal.  Still his facial expression was one of pure satisfaction and delight as he turned his eyes to meet Jim's.

"Thank you Jim.  You know, lately I've become weary of the constant battle to keep my country free and the earth safe."  He shook his head sadly, "Too many aliens bent on taking over the earth, too many ONI missions gone bad, and too many insane megalomaniacs wanting to rule the world, I just began to wonder what kind of world my future children and grandchildren might have someday."

Jim listened without interrupting as the turbolift shifted in several directions.  Lee looked exhausted, but he was holding his own, and so Jim ignored his obvious physical weakness just now.  Lee's eyes diverted off to the side momentarily as he continued his heartfelt dialog.

"But just seeing the Enterprise, and your crew..." his eyes returned to meet Jim's as a sincere smile formed on his face, "It's reminded me that the future is worth fighting for."  His smile widened even

as he allowed his head to lean on the back of the turbolift, in a rare show of his weakness. "Thanks."

"It was my pleasure, Lee."

The turbolift stopped and Lee pulled himself together, straightening his weary bones to carry him in the proper demeanor of a boat's captain as he stepped into the corridor following Jim through another sliding door.

They entered the transporter room where Harry was waiting, obviously relieved to see Lee walking on his own steam.

"I guess you managed an escape after all?"  Harry said, as his smile threatened to widen across his face.

"Yes Sir."

"Just a small tour of the Bridge," Jim quipped.

Harry's eyes showed obvious delight for Lee, though he, himself had not been invited on the Bridge he had seen the earth's profile from the viewing windows of an observation deck.

A "whoosh" sound announced Dr. McCoy's arrival as he bee-lined his way over toward his patient.  Without speaking a word he used the hypo injecting a shot of pain medication into Lee's shoulder.  Lee's eyes closed slightly as he registered the immediate relief he felt.  As he opened his eyes he caught the easy smile of Leonard McCoy looking back.

"A little parting gift, no sedation this time, but I suggest you hit the bunk in sickbay immediately."

"Thanks Doc," Lee offered his hand and they shook, "please thank Nurse Chapel as well."

"Gentlemen," Jim motioned with his hands towards the transporter pad.

Admiral Nelson moved and extended his hand to Jim, "Captain Kirk, I am forever in your debt for saving my life, but mostly..." he looked over at Lee, "for what you did for my Captain."

"It was our genuine pleasure to have you here, Admiral Nelson."  The twinkle in Kirk's eyes confirmed his sincerity.

Harry took another step toward Spock and extended his hand as well, "Mr. Spock, I found our discussions most fascinating."

"As did I Sir, allow me to offer a Vulcan farewell."  Spock then raised his hand moving his fingers to part in the middle, "Live long and prosper."  Harry smiled and nodded then turned to ascend the steps with Lee.

Jim stepped over to the transporter panel, "You have the coordinates Scotty?"

Lee turned around on the pad to face a man in a red shirt who spoke with a distinctive Scottish accent.

"Aye Sir, two to beam down straight to sickbay."

"Thank you again Captain Kirk," Jim nodded back as Lee continued, "with your permission Sir, a slight course change?"

"Granted," Jim said as he leaned over and quietly whispered something into Scotty's ear.  Sickbay could wait.

"Energize."  Kirk's order was obeyed immediately as Lee and Harry's molecules took the forms of sparkly lights that danced about in a column of light.

A moment later, the two columns materialized into the Control Room of Seaview.  Lee turned to view his boat and crew with great satisfaction and pride.  Their explorations and many adventures were a precursor to what the Enterprise would do someday, 300 years in the future.  What they did here mattered and made a difference.  He always knew it, but today he felt refreshed in that knowledge.

Chip's stoic XO face was completely absent as he smiled with the deepness reaching the depths of his equally deep blue eyes, as the Alpha Crew let up an uncharacteristic "whoop" of excitement and joy welcoming their Captain back.

Captain James T Kirk rounded the corridor and entered the Captain's Quarters.  The Enterprise had successfully warped to the sun and then whiplashed back catapulting them forward to their own time.  They had contacted Star Fleet and found that the time-line had been corrected, and everything was back the way it should be.

He had a little explaining to do as his preliminary report revealed that he had brought Admiral Harriman Nelson aboard for three days while Captain Lee Crane recovered from a life threatening injury; definitely a risk, but in the end they added a "job well done" to Kirk.  Especially after the Admiral's Symposium was produced on data disk giving earth's oceanographers and historians enough to sink their teeth into for years to come.  The sessions on extinct sea creatures had been of special interest, especially the humpback whales and their curious songs.

He had one last item to complete this mission, at least for him personally.  A small buzzing sound was heard and Jim summoned the young ensign into the room.  His tall frame, dark hair and facial features familiar even after generations, Jim smiled inwardly as he realized that even Ensign Crane's hazel green eyes reflected the expressiveness of his ancestor.

"Thank you for seeing me, Sir."

"Come in Mr. Crane.  I thought I...owed it to you," Jim paused expressively, "since we couldn't allow you two to meet."

Young Christopher Lee Crane nodded his head, "I appreciate your time, Sir."

"At ease Mr. Crane," Captain Kirk motioned the young ensign to a seat on the opposite side of his workstation.

"What was he like, Sir?"

Jim leaned back in his swivel chair with a leg crossed as he spoke, "He was an excellent captain, very competent, confident but not an arrogant man.  He was passionate and I'd say a man of deep convictions," summing up his earlier observations of the man.

"I saw him once, Sir."  Christopher Crane's head ducking slightly, "it was late at night, he was sleeping.  It was very odd, seeing him so young.  But I couldn't help but wonder..."  Christopher's head turned slightly as his eyes diverted away in thought.

"You wondered," finished Captain Kirk, "if the man lived up to the legend?"

Christopher's eyes returned to Kirk's, "Yes Sir, all my life I've been aware of who he was.  I've always wondered if he was more myth than man."

Jim looked across the table, not sure how to answer young Ensign Crane.  All he knew was what he observed, and so he decided to let Christopher decide for himself.

"You're probably not aware of how Captain Crane was injured, Ensign.   After the Klingons beamed aboard, we weren't able to notify Spock through the boat's com system.  One of us had to get to the lab.  Krohn used a disrupter on me and Lee took him on.  Krohn busted some ribs kicking him, taunting him to stay down, but he kept rising all the while headed for the crash doors to use as a diversion.  Once the doors were closed I overpowered my guard and ran to the lab.  Lee must have overpowered Krohn as well, or I never would have made it.  When we returned with the security detail Krohn had already started in on him with a disrupter."

He paused a moment, reflecting, "He was determined to keep his crew safe and save Admiral Nelson at the same time.  I'd say the question isn't whether the man lived up to the legend, but does the legend live up to the man?"

Christopher Crane's head ducked again, and then rose to meet Jim's.  "Thank you, Sir," he stood and started for the door having felt that his questions had been answered but turned just before the sliding door would activate.  He reached down to his hand and fingered the gold and black onyx ring that he wore, the one that had been passed down to the first academy graduate of each of the Crane family for generations.

"Did he ever say why he wore his ring on his left hand before he was married?"

"Mr. Crane," Jim's smile evident of his amusement, "I think the man is entitled keep some of his secrets."  They both shared a laugh as Ensign Crane turned to leave through the sliding doors.

Jim thought about having Lee's grandson of many generations aboard his ship.  He had already been tagged by Star Fleet for his potential, not because of his name but because he had demonstrated a rare command potential that Star Fleet wanted to explore.  He had already earned his golden tunic worn by Bridge command crew and was proving to be a good helmsman and weapon's officer.

He wished he could have let Lee in on this part of his future, but it would have been too dangerous.  He had to be satisfied to hear Lee talk about his future children and grandchildren and the future he was securing for them.  Just then Jim's head cocked to the side, as something stirred a memory of a passage he read long ago.

He walked to his shelf that contained his collection of antique books and pulled the one he was looking for.  The embossed raised lettering was gold over a deep blue cover that read, Our Voyages to the Bottom of the Sea, by Admiral Harriman Nelson and Admiral Lee Crane.  His fingers brushed over the embossed raised figure of the Seaview as he turned to the "acknowledgement page" running his finger down till he found the passage he was looking for.

...And to my beautiful wife, Brianna, thank you for the best years of my life and for your loving support through the years.  And to my children, my grandchildren and all the Cranes of future generations:  Never give up doing the right thing and fighting the good fight, I have it on good authority that the enterprise is well worth the effort.

Jim chuckled softly at first, as he closed the book running his hand over the cover again.  His chuckle grew into a full laugh as he acknowledged Lee's dual use of the word enterprise.  Yes indeed...the Enterprise was definitely worth the effort.  The soft flows of Captain Kirk's laughter flooded the room and brought a warm feeling to the ambience of his cabin as Jim closed this mission by reading the passage into his personal log.

Lee stood at the great Herculite windows watching the beauty of the sea life swim around the great submarine.  They were in warm shallow tropical waters as exotic and colorful fish swam around Seaview as if she were a large fish as well.

Today was his first day out of sickbay, and although he wasn't cleared for duty yet, he was glad to finally be able to return to the Front Porch.  He had missed it.  He was aware of someone's footfalls behind him and knew immediately by the cadence that it was the Admiral.

"Hello Lee."

"Good evening Admiral.  I never get tired of this view," he said in light conversation as he tilted his head toward the windows.

Harry's half smile a reflection of his personal satisfaction just now, seeing Lee alive and well.  It had been entirely too close this time.

"I wondered if the view might be disappointing after the Enterprise."

Lee swung around as if dodging a blow, but his face was calm and he delivered a smile that dispelled all of Harry's doubts.  "Never Sir.  This Lady has had my heart since the first time I snuck aboard her.  She's always been true, and I expect to be at her helm for a long time to come."

His candid speech was exactly what Harry needed to hear, "And that's exactly where I want you to be, Lad."

They enjoyed the moment exchanging smiles that spoke of a deep friendship that had grown over the years and one that they expected to continue to grow in the years to come.  Standing here on the Front Porch with the Admiral just now was more than satisfying, it was perfect.  Lee's smile widened to its full potential lighting up his face to the twinkle in his eyes, as Harriman Nelson responded in the same fashion as the two savored this perfect...moment...in time.

Author's Notes:

I was under the impression initially that promoting Lee to Admiral would mean that he would be stuck at a desk, until I read a recent article about a US Admiral that was the Captain of a ship in a non-war time situation.  His flag rank hadn't kept him from commanding the ship so I figured after all the years of Lee saving the world, coupled with a war time situation where Lee is activated from the Reserves, then getting Lee his last stripe and then his stars was easy!

P.S.  I want to thank the readers for their patience as I have learned and grown since my first story...did I really write that the boat traveled at ¾ speed? : )  I'm still learning (and making mistakes : ), but have enjoyed taking you with me in the further adventures of Seaview and her crew.  Thank you also to the readers who encouraged me with their comments, it's always more fun knowing others appreciate the stories!

I also want to thank my husband, he's my best friend and my wonderful beta!  He encourages me to write and enjoys my creativity, what a guy!

And thanks to Carol and Seaview Stories for hosting the stories; giving me lots of tips, and for the added work my weekly submissions placed on her.  Her on-going efforts to keep us all going in VTTBOTS fan fiction are very much appreciated!
