Admiral Harriman Nelson, founder and head of the Nelson Institute for Marine Research, sat quietly at his desk fully engrossed in reading the preliminary results from one of his pet research projects when he was brought back to the present by the chime of his phone. “Yes Angie, what is it,” he inquired of his admin assistant.
“Sorry to disturb you sir, but I have Secretary of State Torrington on line 1 wishing to speak with you,” Angie replied.
Harri’s eyebrows rose sharply indicating his surprise and curiosity at this unexpected called. “Put her through Angie.”
“Madame Secretary to what do I owe the honor of this call?”
“Admiral Nelson, thank you for accepting my call. I have a very important favor to ask of you and your submarine,” Secretary Torrington replied.
“And what might that be,” Harri asked becoming more intrigued by the moment.
“Admiral is this line secure?”
“Hold on.” Harri reached to the side of the phone and engaged the signal scramble device. “Yes, this line is now secure. Now, what is it I can do for you Maggie?”
“Harri are you by any chance familiar with the country of Zorovaristan?”
“Zorovaristan,” Harri repeated. “Isn’t that a small country nestled between the Caspian and Black Seas?”
“Exactly,” the Secretary answered. “Up until recently it has been more or less a trivia question in terms of nations of the world, but that has changed given recent discoveries of rich oil deposits and exotic rare metals. Zorovaristan stands on the edge of becoming a very rich nation with not much protection from its larger and more aggressive neighbors. Fortunately for us the ruling monarchy, once returned to power following the breakup of the USSR, has aligned itself closely with the United States instead of those around them.”
“I see. Being a landlocked nation, what does that have to do with NIMR and the Seaview,” Harri inquired.
“King Mardig is in failing health and not expected live more than a month at the most. His son and heir Prince Eshkan is currently here in the US on vacation. We have intercepted a number of communications that indicate there will be an assassination attempt on Eshkan’s life to prevent him from taking over the throne and thereby throwing the Zorovaristani government into chaos allowing for a coup or hostile annexation by one of its neighbors. We aren’t completely sure who the mastermind behind this is yet but based on what we’ve been able to come up with it is a credible threat. That’s where you and Seaview come in. We would like you to transport the Prince back to his country so that he may ascend the throne when his father passes away.”
“Wouldn’t it just be faster and easier to take him in by airplane?”
“Yes it would be faster but we need more time to find out who is behind the threat to the Prince and outside of a US Navy submarine there’s not a more secure vessel around than the Seaview. A US or ally sub would draw too much attention by diverting to the area and possibly tip off the group behind this plot. The Seaview is capable of traveling virtually anywhere without raising the degree of scrutiny a military vessel would.”
“When would you need us to carry out this mission,” Harri inquired.
“Within the next week, if at all possible. The Prince is in New York now and scheduled to remain there for the next two weeks. Can you get Seaview there in time to meet our timetable?”
“It would be pushing it but I think we can accommodate you on this. However I’m currently without my captain as he is off in support of an ONI mission. He’s not scheduled to be back for at least 10 days and I’m not thrilled at the prospect of taking this on without him.”
“I will get with the Secretary of the Navy and see if they can recall Captain Crane early. If I can make that happen will you accept this assignment,” Secretary Torrington asked.
“Yes, get me Lee Crane and I will see to it that we get Prince Eshkan safely back to Zorovaristan,” Harri replied.
“Thank you Harri, I know I can always rely on you and your personnel to ensure the US is well taken care of. I’ll contact SecNav and get the wheels in motion to recall Crane immediately. Talk with you soon.”
Harri’s mind was a whirl as he hung up the phone. He quickly fired up his computer and did a quick search for information on Zorovaristan. It was a small country not much larger than New Hampshire situated between Armenia, Iran and Azerbaijan, not the friendliest neighborhood by a long shot for a small country friendly with the United States. The monarchy had ruled Zorovaristan for over 500 years, with exception of the time spent under Soviet occupation, and was by and large popular with the people. One thing that seemed odd to Harri was there were absolutely no pictures of the heir apparent Prince Eshkan on any of the sites he checked. There were numerous photos of the rest of the ruling family but the Prince was noticeably absent.
Finishing his research, he picked up his phone and contacted Chip Morton, Seaview’s Executive Officer and ordered him to start preparations to get underway immediately. The crew would have to be recalled early from their shore leave, something he was not overly pleased about, but they had been in port for the last two weeks so at least everyone had had some time off. Chip was definitely not thrilled about the change in plans other than having Lee pulled back from his ONI mission early.
Three days later the Seaview was crewed, minus her captain, and underway for the Atlantic seaboard to pick up their secret cargo. Captain Crane’s ONI mission had for the most part already been completed so he would be able to meet up with the Admiral in New York City in four days’ time.
~ ~ ~ ~
The Admiral and Lt. Commander Morton arrived at the Waldorf-Astoria at 1000 four days later to meet with the Prince and arrange for his transfer to the Seaview. To ensure that their visit elicited the least amount of scrutiny possible they arrived in civilian attire and checked into rooms they had reserved at the Waldorf. After dropping off their bags they made their way to the service elevator taking it to the penthouse suite.
Getting off the elevator they knocked on the door to the suite and were met by General Abassian, the head of the Zorovaristani military. “May I help you” he inquired.
“Good morning, my name is Admiral Harriman Nelson and this is my Executive Officer Lt. Commander Chip Morton. I believe you are expecting us.” Both men clearly displayed their military IDs to the General.
“Yes Admiral Nelson, please come in.” He escorted the Admiral and Morton into the sitting room. The room was large with a number of chairs and sofas positioned around the room. In the corner near the kitchen a large man wearing a side arm stood almost at attention as the three men entered the area. “I am General Martik Abassian, head of the Zorovaristan Army and senior advisor to Prince Eshkan. Please have a seat, the Prince is delayed; he is speaking with his father at this time.”
“That’s no problem; we are also waiting for the Captain of the Seaview, Commander Lee Crane to arrive as well. His flight was delayed but he should be with us shortly.” Nelson responded.
“Very well. May I offer you something to drink while we wait for everyone to join us,” the General inquired.
“If you have coffee readily available I could go for a cup of that,” Harri responded. “How about you Chip?”
“Coffee would be much appreciated, thank you,” Chip replied.
“Of course. Nazar please get coffee for our guests,” the General called to the man near the kitchen.
Nazar entered the kitchen and returned shortly with a silver tray laden with three cups, a carafe and cream and sugar. He set the tray on the table in front of the Admiral and poured coffee into each cup and handed them to the men.
As they sipped on their coffee there was a knock at the front door. The General looked up from his cup. “I am not expecting anyone at this time; it must be your Captain Crane.”
Chip rose from the sofa and moved to the door and looked through the peep hole. In the elevator lobby stood Lee Crane patiently waiting for admittance. His hair was longer than regulation and he had what looked like two weeks of beard on his face. He was dressed in civilian attire, a well-worn pair of blue jeans, oxford shirt and sneakers as he too was advised to look inconspicuous. Chip turned looking at the General, “It’s Commander Crane. Would you like me to let him in?”
The General nodded as Nazar placed his hand firmly around the grip of his side arm. As Chip started opening the door, the door from the Prince’s room opened and both Lee and the Prince entered the sitting room simultaneously. The stunned silence that resulted from that dual entry settled heavily across the room. They were identical, Prince Eshkan and Commander Lee Crane. Everyone in the room stared in amazement and total disbelief as their eyes shifted quickly between the two men not truly sure if they believed what they were seeing.
Both men were dressed in blue jeans and an oxford shirt. They both were slender with broad shoulders and a trim waistline. They had dark curly hair, neatly trimmed beards and both sported the same piercing amber eyes with flecks of topaz and green mixed in.
“My god, you could be twins” Chip said finally breaking the silence and stirring the room’s occupants into motion. Chip shut the door behind Lee as they both moved forward into the sitting area. Both Eshkan and Lee kept their eyes locked on each other as if they were staring into a fun house mirror waiting for some other surprise to jump out.
General Abassian shaking off his surprise and finding his voice made introductions. “Gentlemen may I present Prince Eshkan, heir to the throne of Zorovaristan.” The men of the Seaview inclined their heads slightly in recognition of the head of state. “Prince Eshkan may I present Admiral Harriman Nelson, Commander Lee Crane and Lt. Commander Chip Morton, of the SSRN Seaview.” Eshkan likewise inclined his head but seemed unwilling to break eye contact with Lee.
Finally as the shock wore off the Prince moved forward offering his hand, “Gentlemen thank you for coming.” He shook hands with the Admiral, then Chip and finally Lee. As they gripped hands there was something akin to an electric charge that passed between them as they locked amber eyes on one another. “I must admit I am shocked to say the least,” the Prince continued.
“I’d say that’s putting it mildly, your Highness,” Lee responded. “This is the absolute last thing I expected when I was ordered to report here today.” The tone and timber of their voices was likewise the same with the only difference being their accents.
Nelson moved over to Crane’s side and offered his hand. “Welcome back Lee. It’s good to see you again and in what appears to be good condition.”
Lee blushed slightly and smiled broadly at his adopted father as he grasped his hand. “Thank you, sir. It’s good to be back and yes, I’m fine,” he replied with a wink. Chip just rolled his eyes and smiled at Lee. He knew he would ascertain the Captain’s condition himself once they were through here.
“Please excuse us, the Captain has been away for over two weeks on an errand for our government and we’re never quite sure what condition he’ll be in when we see him,” the Admiral explained to the Zorovaristani men.
“I quite understand Admiral,” responded the Prince.
“This is awkward to say the least,” Nelson continued. “I had no idea that you and Commander Crane bore such a resemblance. I had done quite a bit of research on your country once we were given this mission but was surprised to find that there were no photographs of you, your Highness.”
“Please call me Eshkan, Admiral. Yes, there is a very good reason for that. When I was a young child there was an attempt to kidnap me and it was felt that keeping my identity hidden would be a wise step to make it more difficult for others to attempt such a thing in the future. Of course once I ascend the throne that will end.”
The Admiral nodded in understanding. “Please call me Harri. I see your point but it seems somewhat extreme, I would think that your people would want to know what their future monarch looks like.”
“I suppose so, but it was felt that this was a necessary security precaution to ensure my protection and it seems to have worked as I have remained safe for over 30 years.”
“So Admiral according to Secretary Torrington we are to travel with you to Turkey by submarine,” General Abassian interjected.
“Yes General. Our plan is to take you out to Seaview via the flying sub and then travel submerged to the Mediterranean Sea and deposit you in one of the port cities of Turkey where you will be able to take a plane the rest of the way to Zorovaristan,” Nelson responded. “That way we can keep you out of your enemy’s sights and get you safely ensconced in your homeland before they are the wiser.”
“Sounds like a reasonable plan, Harri. When do we depart,” Eshkan inquired.
“I would like to leave in two days. That way I can get Commander Crane caught up on all our preparations and he can catch up on his sleep. That also gives you time to take care of any lingering business you may have and also you won’t give the appearance of rushing out of town too much ahead of your scheduled departure date tipping off anyone who is watching your movements. We can alter the schedule based on your needs but I think that would work best for us all.”
“I concur, Admiral,”Abassian replied. “That meets our needs.”
“Fine. Chip please work with General Abassian to address any special accommodations they may require and brief them on the procedures for our departure from New York,” Nelson said.
“Aye, sir. Gladly,” Chip replied.
“Lee what say you and I retire to my suite and I can bring you up to speed on the mission parameters.”
“Very well, sir,” Lee answered.
Nelson turned and faced the Prince. “Well then gentlemen the Captain and I will be on our way.” Reaching into his pocket Harri pulled out his business card. “If you need to get in touch with me before Tuesday please don’t hesitate to call. This is my private number.”
Abassian took the card and walked Nelson and Crane to the door. “Thank you Admiral, Captain, I believe we all look forward to seeing your submarine and getting Prince Eshkan safely home to Zorovaristan. Until Tuesday.”
As the door closed Lee walked to the service elevator and signaled the car. It arrived quickly and they got aboard and rode the elevator down to their floor in silence. Each man was busily digesting what he had just seen and heard. As the elevator doors opened Harri stepped out and led the way to his suite with Lee following closely behind.
After entering the suite, Nelson closed the door. “That had to border on the surreal wouldn’t you say Lee?”
“I don’t think surreal even begins to touch what just happened, Harri. Kind of shades of the Prince and Pauper wouldn’t you say,” he replied laughingly.
“I have to agree with you there. I don’t quite believe that they’ve kept the Prince’s image a state secret just to keep him from being kidnapped again. There’s got to be more to it than that,” Harri replied. “So how are you doing, Son,” Harri asked giving Lee a bear hug. “You look good and don’t seem to be any the worse for wear.”
“I really am fine, Dad. The mission went off without a hitch and I was ready to come back anyway when I received the message to cut short my activities and return.”
“Thank god for small favors. I know Chip and Jamie will be thrilled after they’ve given you the once over to make sure you’re not lying,” Harri responded with a chuckle. Lee just shook his head and chuckled as well.
“I’m going to put in an order for room service so we can have some lunch. Then I’ll give you the complete mission brief and let you head off to your room to get some sleep and get rid of some of that fur.”
Lee laughed. “I can’t believe you don’t like it,” he said stroking his beard and running his hand through his hair. “I thought it looked very flattering on Prince Eshkan. Chip’s right though he could be my twin.”

Meanwhile Chip worked through the mission details with General Abassian for their departure dark and early Tuesday morning. “General our plan is to depart from New York harbor around 0300 when traffic is lightest and there are fewer people around to possibly spot us. We’ll have vehicles waiting for us on one of the parking garage levels and will depart with as little fanfare as possible.”
“That will be fine. Please provide the logistical information to Nazar and he will ensure that we are in the right place at the correct time.” Abassian replied.
“Very well sir. Also does the Prince or anyone else in your entourage have any special requests or dietary needs while we are on Seaview? Based on the Admiral’s plan we will be taking approximately 7 days to get there.”
“None that I can think of at the moment, Commander. Tell me Commander have you known Captain Crane long?”
“Yes sir, we have been friends since we attended the Naval Academy together. We were roommates for four years and kept in touch over the years until he took over command of Seaview,” Chip answered.
“So you know the Captain’s family I take it?” Abassian queried.
“Captain Crane doesn’t have a family in the traditional sense sir. He’s an orphan. Why do you ask?”
“I’m just curious Commander. You must admit it was quite a surprise to discover how much he and Prince Eshkan resemble each other. I was curious about his background, if his family was from our neck of the woods, as you would say.”
“Well not knowing anything about his family, it is hard to say where they came from. But you know what they say; everyone has a double somewhere in the world. It’s just really weird to be there when doubles meet.”
“Agreed. I shouldn’t have been surprised though. I should have done some research on your Admiral’s Institute and his personnel and vessel. I assure you I will familiarize myself much more with all this before we leave, “Abassian said with a slight blush at having not done his homework.
Chip gave him a slight smile. “I think you’ll be duly impressed sir; not that I’m biased or anything.” Abassian returned Chip’s smile. “I think we’ve gone over everything we need to for our departure on Tuesday. If anything changes or you come up with something you would like us to bring along for you please don’t hesitate to contact the Admiral at the number he gave you. I’ve got a number of things I need to take care of before we sail so I’ll be on my way.”
“Thank you Commander Morton and pass my thanks on to Admiral Nelson as well.”
“You’re welcome sir. See you on Tuesday if not before,” Chip said as he opened the door and exited into the hall.
At the sound of the closing door, Eshkan opened the door from his room and walked into the sitting area. “You really had no idea, Captain Crane and I looked alike Martik? I find that more than a little disturbing on your part.”
“My sincere apologies, your Highness, I should have done much more research into the Nelson Institute for Marine Research and the people behind it. The fact that their Secretary of State suggested we use their vessel put me off my guard, it will not happen again I assure you.”
“So were you able to get any information from Commander Morton on Crane’s background?”
“He said that the Captain is an orphan and didn’t know his parents or family. That alone definitely demands a more in-depth search of the Captain’s background and potential family. I will have our people get on it immediately. Although I did get the impression that Captain Crane was genuinely stunned to discover the resemblance,” Abassian noted.
“I agree he was as shocked as I. It was strange as we shook hands there seemed an almost electric charge that ran between us when we touched. I’ve never quite experienced anything like that before. You don’t suppose he’s…” Eshkan let the question trail off uncompleted. He moved to the kitchen and grabbed a soda then seated himself on one of the sofas.
“How is your father, Eshkan.” Abassian inquired, changing the subject.
“Not well, he seems to be going downhill faster each day. He is having great difficulty concentrating and remembering who people are; physically he’s slowly wasting away. I wish I were home with him now; I hate having to sit here and wait until we can sneak back into the country.”
“I know and I’m sorry for that but based on the information we have obtained there is a very credible threat to your life and we need to have all our defenses in place before we allow you to return home.”
“I know Martik, I know. Well no point dwelling on that now. Come tell me about the plans for our return to Zorovaristan.”

Harri wanted much more information on the people he would be ferrying across the sea. Having exhausted the sources on the internet, he contacted his admin assistant to initiate a more detailed search. “Angie, I need you to find out anything you can about the ruling family of Zorovaristan. I’m very interested in the current regime and the heir to the throne Prince Eshkan. I’ve been through just about everything on the internet so you’re going to have to dig a lot deeper than that. Also you need to keep this quiet, I would prefer you conduct the search yourself.”
“Of course, Admiral. I’ll have one of the other admin assistants cover my desk while I conduct your search. Is there something specific you want an answer to, sir,” Angie inquired.
“I’m very interested in why there are no pictures of the heir to the throne Prince Eshkan. He told us that it was a safety measure taken after an attempted kidnapping of him as a child. I somehow feel that there is a lot more to that than meets the eye. Post your results to my secured email account, okay?”
“You’ve got it sir. Has Lee made it back yet Admiral,” Angie asked as innocently as she could.
Harri chuckled softly. “Yes Angie, Lee has returned and surprisingly uninjured.”
“Well that will make Doctor Jamieson happy I’m sure.”
“That makes us all happy Angie. Send me what you find as soon as you can.” With that Nelson hung up and turned his attention back to the mission at hand.

“Man was that something else or what when you two guys walked into the room,” Chip said to his CO and surrogate brother Lee Crane.
“I can honestly say that it got my attention,” Lee responded from the bathroom. Shutting off the water he walked into the bedroom wearing just his blue jeans and now sporting a cleanly shaven face. “That feels so good getting that all off. I forget how itchy a beard gets.”
Chip did a quick once over of the Captain looking for any telltale signs of damage from his latest ONI exploits and was happy to find not so much as a bruise. “Well you look more like yourself now. When are you going to take care of the hair?”
“I figured I can take care of it tomorrow since we pretty much have the day off so I can “recover”. I’m ready to have this stuff gone too; I can’t seem to keep it out of my eyes,” he said brushing a wayward curl off his brow.
“At least with the beard gone and the hair cut short we’ll be able to tell you and Prince Eshkan apart. If we all weren’t in a hotel room here in NYC, I would have sworn we were back on Seaview with some alien doing the evil double routine. So what was your impression of the Prince and his general?”
“They seemed nice enough,” Lee said as he pulled a t-shirt over his head. “It was weird though when I shook hands with Eshkan there was like this electrical surge that seemed to pass between us. I have no idea what that means. Hopefully it’s nothing more than static electricity,” he said with a chuckle. “Abassian seemed sincerely concerned with keeping the Prince in good health so I hope we don’t have to deal with any duplicity from the rest of the royal entourage. What impression did you get of them after we left?”
Chip shrugged. “Eshkan went back into his room as soon as you left. As you already said Abassian seems genuinely concerned with the safety of the Prince. He did ask about your family. Said he was curious about where your parents were from.”
“What did you tell him?”
“I told him you didn’t know your parents so you could provide no insight as to your family history or origin.”
“How did he react to that,” Crane inquired.
“He didn’t seem too concerned. I think he was more embarrassed by the fact that he didn’t know you and the Prince looked so much alike. He said he hadn’t done any background work on NIMR or the personnel and he was paying the price for it by being caught off-guard. Of course without the beard and long hair I don’t think we would have noticed the resemblance at all. Still…I think there was something else that went with his inquiry. There may be more at play here than we realize.”
“Well if I know the Admiral he’s already got someone flipping stones to find out what that something is.”
“Of that I’m sure,” Chip said with a smile. “Hey you want to go check out the gym and pool and maybe get a little exercise in before we have to meet the Admiral for dinner?”
“That sounds like a great plan. I need to work out the kinks after that long flight back.”

Angie worked diligently digging into the history of Zorovaristan. She found all kinds of current information about the king, the queen but very little on their son Eshkan. Under Soviet rule there was very little available and the monarchy had been deposed once Soviet forces had taken over the country. Not to be dissuaded by something as bothersome as state run press she kept at it until she finally hit pay dirt finding a birth announcement for twin sons Antranig and Eshkan born to Mardig and Shahandukht, the former king and queen of Zorovaristan. Pushing further into the old archives she found another story detailing the attempted kidnapping the Admiral had mentioned. Apparently the kidnapping hadn’t totally been foiled as the kidnappers succeeded in grabbing one of the twin boys who was never recovered. The boys were about 3 at the time. The kidnapping had occurred while the royal family was on vacation in Kazakhstan so details and follow up were very sketchy.
What limited articles she could find up until the fall of the Soviet Union and the restoration of the monarchy only referred to the one son. As best as she could determine the second child was never found, dead or alive. “How sad,” she thought to herself as she downloaded the information to the Admiral’s account.

As Lee reached the end of the pool and prepared to execute a flip turn, Chip reached over from the adjacent lane and tapped him on the back. Lee stopped and stood up letting the water drain from his face. “What,” he asked.
“I’m done. I’ve still got a few things to do today before we leave so I’m going to head back to the room. Are you coming” Chip inquired.
“No, you go ahead. I want to get in another mile. I haven’t been able to swim in a while and this is really working out all the kinks.”
“Okay. Don’t forget we’re going out with the Admiral for dinner so you probably should head back to the room in an hour or so,” Chip said as he hauled himself onto the pool deck.
“Thanks for the reminder; I’ll set the alarm on my watch to make sure I don’t show up late.”
Chip nodded, smiled and walked over to the lounge chair and grabbed his towel. After drying off he donned his terry cloth robe and headed back to his room. Lee smiled back at his friend, waved goodbye then resumed his swim.
About 30 minutes later, Lee became aware of another swimmer in the pool and stopped at the shallow end to check out his company. He was somewhat surprised to see Prince Eshkan’s guard seated in one of the deck chairs. Lee made eye contact with him and nodded. Looking two lanes over Lee saw what looked like the Prince also swimming laps. Deciding he had had enough water for the day Lee hauled himself out of the pool and walked over to his towel and robe. All the while the guard’s gaze was firmly fixed on him until he was certain he presented no threat to the Prince.
Eshkan came to a stop at the end of the pool and stood up. He spied Lee and smiled and waved at him. He too pulled himself out of the pool and claimed his towel. “Commander Crane, I believe,” Eshkan said with a laugh. “I hardly recognized you without the beard.”
Drying himself, Lee smiled and moved over to the Prince. “Yes, an occupational requirement,” he said laughingly stroking his bare face. “I find that I have little tolerance for the itchiness of a beard. I much prefer a smooth face, your Highness.”
“Please, call me Eshkan.”
“All right Eshkan, please call me Lee.”
As the two men stood there in just their swimming trunks, the difference between them was now more pronounced. While Eshkan was slim and generally fit Lee’s physique was more heavily muscled given his active lifestyle. Lee literally rippled as he moved, his well-defined muscles could be easily seen beneath his skin as they flexed and relaxed with each step or movement he made. Another striking difference was the numerous scars Lee had across his body gained over his childhood and through his association with the Navy and NIMR.
“It looks as though you’ve seen some serious action based on all those scars, Lee,” Eshkan noted.
“Hazards of the trade I guess. The Admiral was serious when he said they’re never quite sure what condition I’ll be in when I come back from a mission for the Navy.”
“I admire your dedication and commitment to your country. You are a true patriot to accept so much pain in defense of your nation,” Eshkan replied.
“I’m sure you feel much the same about your country as well.”
“True, but my tests of allegiance have not been as physically challenging as yours seem to have been,”Eshkan noted. “So, tell me about your family Lee, given we look so much alike I’m wondering if we’re somehow related somewhere down the genetic line.”
“There’s not much to tell I’m afraid. My parents were killed in a car accident when I was about 3. The authorities weren’t able to find any next of kin or much information about them at all so I have no idea what my ancestry is. When they found me they had no idea what my name was so they took my mother’s first name Lee and my father’s first name Benjamin and I became Lee Benjamin Crane. I’ve tried over the years to find out more about them but I’ve yet to uncover any new information,” Lee explained.
“I’m truly sorry to hear that. It must difficult not knowing where you came from or where the rest of your family may be.”
“I don’t really dwell on it. I have my friends and chosen family and they make me happy and complete. You don’t really miss what you never had,” Lee said with a shrug. About then Lee’s watch alarm went off alerting him it was time to get back to the room and change for dinner. “That’s telling me it’s time for me to go. Enjoy the rest of your swim Eshkan.”
“Thank you. It’s been good talking with you. Have a good evening Lee,” Eshkan replied. He watched as Lee donned his robe and exited the pool. “Nazar, I’ve had enough for now. Let’s go back to the suite.”
Eshkan pulled on his robe deep in thought following his exchange with Lee. “I truly wonder…”
As they exited the pool a lone gunman appeared in the hallway taking aim at the Prince. Nazar reacted immediately drawing his gun, pushing Eshkan to the floor, shielding him with his body as he and the gunman fired at each other. The gunman was hit and made a hasty retreat leaving a trail of blood behind him. Nazar was not that lucky as he was shot through the heart and died instantly.
Eshkan scrambled quickly to his feet grabbing Nazar’s gun. He quickly checked his guard and found him dead. He returned to the pool and immediately called his suite to alert Abassian as to what had happened. Strangely no one answered. Eshkan slowly exited the pool again and made his way warily to the elevator and called the car. He entered the car and directed the elevator to the penthouse level.
Exiting the elevator he moved to the door of his suite finding it slightly ajar. Pushing the door open carefully he quickly scanned the room for any sign of movement. “Martik, are you here,” he called out. As he moved further into the room he spotted the general lying on the floor unconscious with a large cut on his forehead.

Harri, Lee and Chip settled themselves down to enjoy a sumptuous meal at one of New York’s finest restaurants. It had been quite a while since they had all been able to get together and just relax. It was a pleasant surprise to have Lee back in the fold without a single scratch and they were celebrating that as well.
Sipping on his scotch, Harri fixed his son firmly in his sights and smiled. “Well Lee you’re looking somewhat better. Couldn’t find a barber though, huh” he kidded.
“That’s first on my list of things to do tomorrow, sir,” Lee said with a wink.
“Good, good. I’m glad the beard’s gone Lee. I was having a tough time telling you and the Prince apart,” Harri said with a smile. “Is everything all set up for our departure Chip?”
“Everything’s set all we need are our passengers. They had no special requests and were very amenable to our timetable so hopefully it should be smooth sailing.” Chip reported.
As they sat there chatting about what had gone on at NIMR and with Seaview during Lee’s absence the Admiral’s cell phone began to ring. He opened the phone and answered, “Nelson. What happened? … When? … Is he all right? … I’m sorry to hear that. … Yes we’ll return right away and make preparations to leave immediately. See you shortly.”
As Harri hung up he could see the questions clearly written across the faces of his men. “That was General Abassian, there was an assassination attempt on Prince Eshkan’s life. He was unharmed but his guard Nazar was killed protecting him. General Abassian has requested that we push our time table forward and leave as quickly as possible. Chip, where do we stand on our departure arrangements?”
“We’re ready to go anytime, sir.”
“Excellent. Let’s head back to the hotel and gather up our passengers.” With that they rose from the table and started for the door. Harri dropped a few bills on the table to cover their drinks and followed closely behind.

Back at the Waldorf they quickly packed their bags and headed up to the penthouse suite. As they arrived they found the lobby filled with NYC police officers and FBI agents investigating the shooting.
“Sorry gentlemen this area is off limits,” one of the officer’s said as he moved to prevent them from exiting the elevator.
“My name is Admiral Harriman Nelson and I’m here at the behest of the Secretary of State to escort the Prince and his entourage back to their country.”
“Do you have any ID on you that substantiates that,” the officer inquired.
All three men pulled out their military IDs and showed them to the officer. As he was inspecting them the lead FBI officer walked over to likewise verify their credentials. He found himself staring very intently at Lee examining his ID more closely than the others.
“Come this way gentleman, we’ve been expecting you,” the agent said handing back their IDs.
“Guess he noticed the resemblance,” Chip whispered to Lee. Lee just shrugged somewhat surprised since without the beard the likeness he shared with the Prince was not that noticeable.
As they entered the penthouse the reason for the extra scrutiny became immediately apparent. Prince Eshkan had shaved his beard and had once again become Lee’s doppelganger. Again Harri, Lee and Chip found themselves staring rather dumbfounded at the eerie resemblance. In fact all the occupants in the room stared in disbelief.
Seeing the Admiral and his men Eshkan arose from the sofa he was sitting on and moved to greet them. “Harri, thank you for coming so quickly. “
“Of course Eshkan. Are you all right?”
“Yes I’m unharmed; unfortunately Nazar ensured that I remain so at the expense of his life. General Abassian was also attacked and knocked unconscious by the assassin when he tried to gain access to the apartment. He has a concussion but aside from that is uninjured.”
“I am glad you aren’t hurt but I’m sorry for the loss of your man and the injury to General Abassian. Did either of you recognize your attackers,” Nelson inquired.
“No. I didn’t get a good look at the man, it happened all so quickly and Nazar had me down on the ground before I really realized what was happening. General Abassian said his attacker gained entry pretending to be a member of the hotel staff and assaulted him as he opened the door,” Eshkan replied.
“Admiral Nelson, I’m Special Agent Franks with the FBI investigating the shooting and the attempt on Prince Eshkan’s life.”
“Special Agent,” Nelson replied shaking his hand. “My officers, Commander Lee Crane, Captain of Seaview and Executive Officer Lt. Commander Chip Morton.” Lee and Chip nodded at the introductions.
“Gentlemen,” he said nodding in return. “Well Admiral, things have quite obviously escalated from potential to real threats against Prince Eshkan. We’ve made arrangements to provide you an armed escort from the hotel to the location of your vessel.”
“That’s very much appreciated given the course of current events,” Nelson replied. Turning to the Prince he continued. “Eshkan we are ready to leave whenever you are. Is General Abassian able to travel with us or will he be remaining here?”
“I will be coming along for the ride Admiral,” Abassian said as he walked somewhat unsteadily from his bedroom into the sitting room. He moved to one of the sofas and slowly sat down to put a stop to the spinning of the room. The General had a large bandage across the front of his forehead where he had been struck by the assassin. His eyes weren’t quite focused and he was pale.
“Martik you should remain lying down until it is time to go. You don’t want to overdo it,” Eshkan chided his General.
“I’m fine, your Highness,” he replied. Nelson and Morton had to bite down on a snicker having heard that response far too many times. Lee shot them both a nasty glare. Abassian stared questioningly at the three Seaview officers. “Am I missing something,” he inquired.
“Not really, General. It’s a private joke,” Nelson said with a slight smile. “We get a similar response from Captain Crane when he is sporting a concussion and we don’t believe him either.”
Abassian gave them a tired smile and leaned back resting his head against the back of the sofa.
“Any idea who attacked them Special Agent Franks,” Lee asked.
“We’re studying the video footage taken in the elevators, lobby and the pool area to see if we can identify the attacker. According to the Prince, the assassin was wounded by his bodyguard when he tried to shoot him which probably saved the Prince’s life.”
“Please keep us informed on any developments Special Agent,” Eshkan asked. “I have alerted our security forces in Zorovaristan to make available any information they can to assist you in your search.”
“Eshkan, would you please extend that same courtesy to the Office of Naval Intelligence so they can also aid in finding the parties behind this,” Nelson asked. Lee shot the Admiral an inquiring look at his request.
“Of course Harri, the more eyes on this plot the better,” Eshkan replied.
“Thank you. Well gentlemen unless there are reasons to remain here, I think it best that we make our move to the harbor and get you all aboard FS-1 so we can take you back home,” Nelson said.
“I think we have everything we need here your Highness,” Frank responded. “Once the autopsy on your bodyguard has been completed we will make arrangements to have him returned to Zorovaristan, if that is acceptable.”
“Yes, Special Agent Franks that will be most appreciated,” Abassian answered as he slowly pushed himself to his feet. “Let us get our luggage and we can be on our way.”
“Excellent,” Franks responded. “I’ll get everything put in motion to bring the cars around and establish the escort.”
As the FBI agents and police moved to collect the bags and arrange for transport Lee moved over to Eshkan. Lee smiled and stroked his own face, “What happened to the beard Eshkan?”
Eshkan smiled in return and likewise stroked his now bare face. “The General thought it might be a wise idea to alter my appearance a bit to maybe put off our attackers. I must admit it is quite strange feeling this bare skin. I’ve had my beard since I could grow one. Shaving was a very interesting experience and one I’m not too sure I want to keep repeating,” he replied with a laugh.
“Just takes a little getting used to,” Lee responded laughing as well. “As I said I much prefer a smooth face to having to deal with the itch of the hair.”
“All right gentlemen we’re ready to roll,” Franks said. “Are you ready to go your Highness?”
Looking to see that their luggage had been collected and that General Abassian looked up to making the trip, Prince Eshkan nodded. “Yes I believe I am ready to go home. Please lead the way, Special Agent Franks.”
The trip from the Waldorf to the harbor was incident free. With the aid of the police escort they moved rapidly through traffic to their destination at the dock where FS-1 was berthed. When the motorcade came to a halt various agents and police officers sprang from the cars to secure the area. Lee and Chip moved quickly from the car to FS-1 to disengage the security system and begin powering up the little sub for the trip out to Seaview.
Once Lee notified Franks that FS-1 was operational and ready for departure the Prince and General were escorted to the craft. “This is amazing Harri,” Eshkan exclaimed. “You say it serves as both a supersonic aircraft and a submersible?”
Harri smiled and nodded at Eshkan’s wonder and delight with the little yellow craft. General Abassian was likewise impressed as they made their way to the sub and entered through the aft hatch.
As they entered Harri directed the Prince to one of the rear seats and pointed to the recessed bunk indicating the General should take that position. The Admiral spoke before the General could decline. “With your concussion it will make the trip to Seaview much more tolerable, believe me I know,” he said with a small smile. Abassian nodded his acceptance and gratefully lay down on the bunk. Chip moved over quickly and belted him in for the flight.
“Admiral, do you want the co-pilot seat, sir,” Chip asked before taking the seat.
“No Chip you go ahead, I’ll sit back here with Eshkan and answer any questions he may have about FS-1.”
With all the passengers in and luggage stowed, Chip secured the aft hatch and indicated to Lee that they were ready for departure. Lee slowly engaged the engines and moved the craft into the waterway. Once clear of the harbor he got flight clearance and launched FS-1 into the air and back to Seaview to start the long voyage east.
~ ~ ~
The flight out to Seaview was relatively short as she was only 200 miles offshore. As they neared her coordinates Lee flipped on the radio and contacted her. “FS-1 to Seaview, FS-1 to Seaview, do you read me.”
“FS-1 this is Seaview we read you loud and clear. Welcome back Skipper,” Sparks responded.
“Thanks Sparks. I’ll be making my approach shortly. Please have Dr. Jamieson standing by, I have one passenger with a concussion and would like him handy should something come up,” Lee replied.
“Copy that FS-1. See you shortly sir. Seaview out.”
Lee set about transitioning from air to water operations and smoothly knifed FS-1 into the ocean like a champion high diver. His mastery of the little sub never ceased to amaze Harri as there was virtually no sensation associated with the change of operating environment and mode.
“Truly amazing, Harri” Eshkan remarked. “I hardly felt anything at all. I assumed there would be some kind of jolt as we dropped into the water but that only felt as if we had changed gears.”
“Well Eshkan you are being piloted by the best operator we have. Lee takes a rather fatherly pride in this sub and has logged more hours than anyone else,” Harri said with his own share of fatherly pride.
Lee laughed and blushed slightly. “Seaview this is FS-1, open sub bay doors and prepare for docking operations.”
“FS-1 this is Seaview. Sub bay doors are open, ready for docking at your convenience. Welcome home Skipper.”
“Thank you Seaview, starting docking maneuvers now.”
Lee quickly maneuvered FS-1 into position and eased her into her docking cradle. As the retention clamps clanged shut he began powering down the systems and putting her to bed. Chip quickly powered down his systems and released his safety harness and stood up. He pulled down the access ladder and headed up to open the hatch.
Opening the hatch Chip quickly climbed out of FS-1 into the control room of Seaview. There to meet him were Lt. O’Brien acting Captain, Chief Sharkey and Dr. Jamieson and two of his corpsmen.
“Welcome aboard Commander Morton,” O’Brien said.
“Thanks, Bobby. How are things?”
“Green across the board sir,” O’Brien replied.
Next head to come into view was that of Admiral Nelson as he climbed out of FS-1. “Admiral, on-board,” called out Chip to the control room crew.
The next person up the ladder was Prince Eshkan. He was immediately struck by the view through the huge Herculite windows and he froze at the top of the ladder. Dr. Jamieson, seeing the ‘Skipper’s’ uncharacteristic pause became concerned and moved to assist his Captain. As he approached Nelson smiled and waved him back.
“Prince Eshkan, please step aboard,” Nelson said breaking the Prince’s rapt gaze out the windows.
“Oh pardon me Admiral. I was totally unprepared for the grandeur of your submarine or the view out of these remarkable windows.”
Nelson chuckled softly at the confused stares from the members of his crew. “It is a common response, Eshkan and one I still sometimes find myself caught up in.”
Eshkan stepped aboard and moved into the nose as General Abassian slowly mounted the ladder and entered Seaview. He too was struck by the view and likewise stared in wonderment at the windows and the size of the control room.
As the General stepped aside, Lee quickly mounted the ladder and came aboard Seaview. “Captain, on board,” called out Chip as Lee stepped onto the control room deck. The crew stared in stunned silence as they looked at both their Skipper and his double Prince Eshkan.
“Dr. Jamieson,” Nelson said now waving Will forward. “I present Prince Eshkan, of Zorovaristan and General Abassian, head of the Zorovaristani military. Gentlemen, Dr. Will Jamieson our Chief Medical Officer.” The men quickly shook hands.
“A pleasure to meet you Dr. Jamieson,” Eshkan responded smiling slightly at Jamieson’s confused look.
“Will, General Abassian was injured prior to our departure from New York. He has a concussion and if the General is willing, I would like you to give him a quick exam to ensure we did no additional damage to him on the flight out,” Nelson replied.
Will nodded. “A pleasure to meet you, your Highness, General. By all means Admiral I think it very prudent to check the General’s condition to make sure no complications have developed. Are you able to walk General?”
“Yes, Doctor I am quite able to walk, please lead the way.” Abassian responded.
“Very well, sir. If you would follow me, we can go down to Sick Bay and get you all checked out and into your cabin in no time, barring no complications,” Jamie replied.
As Jamie, Abassian and the corpsmen departed for Sick Bay, the Admiral stepped forward toward Prince Eshkan. “Prince Eshkan, Chief Sharkey here will escort you to Guest Cabin A and get you all settled in. Once you’ve done that I’ll give you the grand tour. Would that be acceptable?”
“Of course Admiral. I would like to wait for the tour until General Abassian is up to it. I don’t want to consume all your time running tourists around your boat.” Eshkan replied.
“As you wish Eshkan. Chief, please see to our guest’s luggage and escort Prince Eshkan to Guest Cabin A.”
“Right away sir,” Sharkey replied still a bit stunned by the uncanny resemblance between the Skipper and the Prince.
“Bobby,” Lee called out. “What’s the status of the boat?”
“We’re ready to get underway whenever you give the order Skipper.”
“Very well. Lay in a course for Turkey and get us under way at three quarters speed,” Crane replied.
“Aye, aye sir. Helm come to course zero nine zero, three quarters speed.”
“Helm to zero nine zero, three quarters speed, aye” responded the helmsman. Seaview quickly began her turn to the east and the subtle vibration of the engines engaging and coming up to speed could be felt through the deck.

The three command officers left the control room to go to their quarters to settle back in after their arrival. Entering his cabin, the Admiral flipped on his computer to access any new email that had arrived since their departure from New York. The first item up was an email from his admin assistant. Harri sat down at his desk and quickly opened the message.
He perused the information that Angie had been able to recover and pondered its meaning. “Hmmm,” Harry thought to himself, “It doesn’t say anywhere whether the boys were fraternal or identical twins. If they are identical twins, then maybe the policy of keeping the Prince’s likeness a secret is to prevent pretenders to the throne from trying to replace the Prince with his twin.”
Harri picked up his phone and buzzed Sparks. “Sparks get me Admiral Hardy at ONI.”
“Yes sir,” Sparks replied and moved to initiate the call back to land. Sparks quickly made the connections and reached Admiral Hardy at ONI headquarters. He dialed Admiral Nelson’s phone. “Sir Admiral Hardy is standing by.”
“Thanks, Sparks. Put me through.” There was a slight pause and then Harri heard the beep on the other end putting him through to Hardy. “Tom, Nelson here.”
“Hello Harri. I know you’re not calling to complain that I have broken your Captain so what else can I help you with,” Hardy responded with a chuckle.
“For once, Tom,” Harri joked back. “Have you been following the recent events surrounding Prince Eshkan of Zorovaristan?”
“Peripherally, I heard about the assassination attempt. I found it very interesting that despite knowing there was a threat to the man they declined additional security personnel to keep him safe. Since you’re asking I’m assuming your call has something to do with it.”
“Well that’s a bit of information I was not aware of,” Nelson replied. “Yes I’m calling about the assassination attempt but only in an oblique way. It turns out that Lee Crane and Prince Eshkan could be twins. They are identical down to the eyes. From what I can tell no one knew of the resemblance as everyone seemed rather shocked. The reason I’m calling Tom is to get you to turn your high-powered search engines onto Lee’s parents.”
“His parents, why?”
“According to the research that we’ve conducted there were initially two heirs to the throne of Zorovaristan when the queen gave birth to twin boys. When the boys were around 3 years old there was an attempted kidnapping of the two boys. Apparently the kidnappers successfully grabbed one of the boys, the eldest Antranig, who was never recovered. Since that time there have been no images of the remaining prince made available to the public. What has me intrigued Tom, is that Lee was placed in an orphanage after his parents were killed in a car accident when he was approximately 3 years old and no one was able to find any next of kin or any information about his parents. Do you see where I’m going with this?”
“So you’re thinking maybe the kidnappers had brought the boy to the U.S. to hide him and Lee may just be the missing heir,” Hardy answered.
“It’s a distinct possibility. God they even sound alike, it’s rather unsettling being in the same room with them,” Harri confessed. “After the attempt on his life, I asked the Prince to provide any information they may have on the potential attacker to ONI. He was fully on board with that. That should give you some access to their files and possibly a little extraneous snooping. I’m pretty sure they’re scrambling to conduct the same research I’m asking you to do and you may just gain access to some missing parts of this puzzle.”
“Understood Harri. Yes we’ll look into this post haste.”
“Thanks Tom. I’ll forward you what information we’ve already uncovered to give you a head start on your search,” Nelson added. “We’re underway to Turkey now to return the Prince to Zorovaristan. Let me know what you find out.”
“Will do Harri, good bye.” With that the call ended and Harri sat there quietly for a moment mulling over the possibilities of the results from that search.

Meanwhile Lee was busily getting back in uniform to return to the bridge and take command. He was not at all pleased with the image in the mirror as he hadn’t had time to get his hair cut following his last mission. His hair was considerably longer than regulation, not that that was really an issue aboard the Seaview since she was a civilian vessel, but old habits die hard. Conceding there was nothing he could do about it he finished tucking in his shirt and headed out the door.
He walked quickly to the spiral staircase leading from officer’s country to the control room. As he came down he saw Chip and Bobby talking quietly at the chart table. Lee walked over to the table to join in on the conversation. “Hi Chip, Bobby am I too late for the status briefing,” he asked lightly.
“Hey Lee, no, actually you’re just in time. Bobby was just getting ready to update me on boat and mission status.” Lt. O’Brien proceeded to give his superior officers a complete rundown of all the events and status of Seaview since their absence.
“Thanks, Bobby,” Lee responded at the completion of the brief.
“Uh Skipper, can I ask you a question, sir,” O’Brien asked hesitantly.
“Would it have anything to do with my apparent double,” Lee responded with a sparkle in his eye.
“Yes sir. You must admit it was a bit of a surprise watching you come out of that hatch twice, sir.”
“Well we’re all as puzzled as you,” Lee joked. “I had no idea there was such a striking resemblance between us. It caught all of us, and I mean the Prince and his people too, by surprise when we both stepped into the room. I’m sure it’s just some genetic freak of nature.”
“Well the ‘freak’ part is right,” Chip joked. Lee glared at him then slapped him lightly on the back of the head much to the enjoyment of the control room crew.
“Just for that Mr. Morton, you get the next watch,” Lee stated. Chip sent him a faux glare and then they all broke out laughing.
“Aye, sir. And where pray tell will you be while I’m doing all the work?”
“I’m going to grab a snack, go bother the Admiral for a few moments, check out my boat, then start in on that mountain of paperwork I swear has been breeding in my In box during my absence,” Lee replied. With that he patted Chip on the back and made his way aft towards the wardroom.
Lee stopped in the wardroom and grabbed a tray and loaded it up with a couple of thick roast beef sandwiches, two bowls of potato salad, some carrot and celery sticks and two pieces of cherry pie along with a carafe of coffee and headed out towards the Admiral’s cabin. Arriving at the door he knocked twice and received a rather distracted sounding “come”. Lee opened the door and walked in with his tray of goodies.
“Ah Lee, glad you stopped by I was just about to call you. What have you got there,” Nelson inquired.
“Dinner of sorts, sir; we were rather abruptly cut off when we last tried to sit down and eat. Since I’m feeling a bit peckish I know you have to be more than a little hungry. If you were Chip I would have to categorize you as starved,” Lee responded with a laugh. Nelson joined in on the chuckle at Chip’s expense.
“That does look good,” Harri said as he started picking up piles of paper and shifting things around his desk to make room for the food. Lee set down the tray and started doling out the goodies accordingly. They both sat down and dug into the meal at hand.
After a few moments Harri spoke. “Lee I’ve asked Admiral Hardy to do some investigative work regarding our Zorovaristani guests, and…your parents.”
Lee’s head shot up at Harri’s words. “My parent’s sir,” Lee said inquisitively.
“Yes. Here read this.” Harri handed Lee a copy of the email Angie had sent him regarding the history of the ruling Zorovaristani family. Lee’s face clouded as he read the report and began to digest the implications of the information.
“So you’re thinking maybe I’m the missing heir?”
“I don’t know Lee. There are a lot of unanswered questions and the resemblance between you and Eshkan is amazing. I suppose if we wanted to cut to the chase we could get DNA samples and have those run, but that’s not something I really want to ask the heir apparent of another country to submit to. Based on what Angie was able to find out he is the younger of the two boys and I’m not sure what the lines of succession require for Zorovaristan. It could turn out that you are the next in line for the throne if it comes back that you are brothers.”
“Harri I have absolutely no interest in ruling any country and consider myself a citizen of the United States. I don’t think I would submit to the testing for that very reason. I’ve got my home and … my family. I don’t want any other,” Lee said resolutely.
He and Harri locked eyes and the love and affection they felt towards each other was clearly evident in the steady gaze each man returned. Harri smiled and cleared his throat to choke back the emotions Lee’s declaration evoked in him. “I’m inclined to feel the same way Son.”
“I did get some very interesting information from Tom Hardy. He indicated that the Zorovaristani delegation had been offered additional security personnel to protect the Prince and it had been declined. I find that very odd given the suspected threat to the Prince,” Harry disclosed.
“That’s very interesting indeed. That would have been the first thing I would have accepted if my charge were in danger. You also have to wonder about them only bringing one bodyguard. Had the General been armed at all times I guess it could be argued that he was additional security but only Nazar had a weapon on him. Something here is not adding up. When you talk to Admiral Hardy again, I would recommend that you have him expand his search to include General Abassian and the Prince if he hasn’t already done so,” Lee responded.
“I think that’s a very sound suggestion. I don’t like unanswered questions and I get the feeling that until everything is cleared up we all may be at some risk, especially you now that we have discovered your resemblance to the Prince. I don’t want you taken out by mistake lad.”
Lee blushed slightly at the Admiral’s voiced concern for his well-being. “I will definitely be much more on alert until we are well done with this mission. Given recent events I don’t like the idea of having a bullseye on me especially for something I have no control over.”
After they finished their meal Lee placed the dirty dishes back on the tray and set it on the floor outside the Admiral’s cabin for the steward to collect and return to the galley. As he prepared to leave he smiled at Harri, “I’m going to head down to Sick Bay.” Lee said. Harri’s eyebrows shot up in surprise at Lee’s announcement. Seeing his shocked expression Lee quickly added, “To check on General Abassian, sir, no other reason. Just being the ever efficient and conscientious captain you hired.” Harri burst out laughing as Lee grinned broadly and shot him a quick salute as he exited the room closing the door behind him.

Lee walked quickly down the passageway to Sick Bay. As he entered he saw Jamie sitting at his desk making notations on some record. Jamie looked up and his surprise was equal to that of the Admiral’s when he told him where he was heading.
“Skipper! What excellent timing sir.” Jamie said.
“Oh, how so?” Lee inquired warily.
“I was just going to have you report for your post mission physical. You’ve saved me the trouble of having you chased down and collared,” Jamie said with smile.
“Damn, I had forgotten about that. Actually Jamie I’m here to check on General Abassian. How is he doing?”
“He’s doing fine Lee. He’s sleeping in a bunk in the other room. I felt it was a good precaution to keep him under observation since it’s been less than 24 hours since he received the concussion and it could present complications if not treated proactively. He was not overly thrilled with my diagnosis or recommendation, but unlike some senior officers he listened to my words and saw the logic in following my advice.” Jamie smirked as Lee rolled his eyes at the doctor’s not so subtle rebuke.
“I always listen Jamie,” Lee replied. It was Jamie’s turn to roll his eyes at the Captain’s response.
“So since I have you in my clutches and there is currently no danger to the boat why don’t you have a seat on the exam table and I can complete my exam and get you on your way. This should go quickly since you don’t appear to be hiding any damage for a change.” Lee sighed heavily and moved to the exam table and hopped up.
“Lose the shirt Skipper.”
Lee set to unbuttoning his shirt and removed it laying it next to him on the table. Will did a quick visual of the Captain’s torso and was quite pleased to not find a single scratch.
“Are you sure you actually went on that mission or did you decide to play hooky at some seaside resort,” he kidded. It was extremely rare not to get the Captain back without some sort of damage to his person.
“Ha, ha, very funny Jamie,” Lee shot back with a smirk. “Yes I went on my mission and I don’t always come back with injuries.”
“Rarely, Lee,” Jamie bandied back. Jamie set to completing his exam. He listened to Lee’s heart and lungs, took his pulse, checked his blood pressure and his eyes and ran his hands over the Captain’s head feeling for any bumps or cuts that might be hidden by the proliferation of curls. “Going for a new look Captain,” Will said as he grabbed one Lee’s long curls and pulled it out straight then let it spring back.
“I didn’t get a chance to make it to the barber before we left. I was going to do that tomorrow but things got rather out of hand and we made our departure sooner than expected.”
“I imagine. Must have come as quite a surprise to find you have a twin in this world,” Jamie replied. “The mere thought that there are two of you out there send shivers down my spine.”
Lee shot Jamie a faux glare. “It was one of those Kodak moments I don’t think I’ll ever forget. I still find it rather unsettling and can only imagine what Prince Eshkan must be thinking.”
“Well for once Captain you are fit as a fiddle, try and keep it that way.”
Lee just snorted a laugh and reached for his shirt. “I always endeavor to do so Jamie. You know how much I enjoy your little torture chamber down here, not!” He pulled his shirt back on and buttoned it up. He hopped up off the exam table and tucked his shirt in and made for the door. “Thanks Jamie,” Lee said as he sped out of his least favorite part of the boat, much to Jamieson’s amusement.
“Anytime Skipper,” Jamie replied to the empty room.

Lee continued down the passageway nearing the guest cabins. He looked at the door to Guest Cabin A and noted a galley tray stacked with dirty dishes sitting outside the door and no light shining beneath. He considered knocking to check on the Prince but didn’t want to disturb him if he had already gone to bed. It had been a rough day for the entire royal party and a little private down time would probably be much appreciated.
Deciding not to take the chance of waking the Prince, Lee moved on to complete his “walk a boat” to reconnect with his Gray Lady and crew after his time ashore. He headed on down the corridor towards the engineering spaces and the heart of the boat. It felt so good to be back where he belonged.
Finishing his tour and finding everything ship shape Lee entered the control room. Chip was with Lt. Michaels at the chart table apparently completing a turnover briefing before Chip relinquished his command to Michaels for the night. As Lee approached, both men looked up and smiled at their CO.
“Welcome home, Skipper,” Michaels said.
“Thanks Andy. It’s good to be back. How’s everything going tonight?” Lee responded.
“Everything is under control and Andy’s now got the conn,” Chip responded.
“Aye sir, I have the conn,” replied Michaels.
“Now that that’s done, I have but one duty left,” Chip said with a smile.
“Oh, Mr. Morton and what might that be,” questioned Lee.
“It’s time to escort the Captain of the Seaview to his quarters and see that he turns in for the night.”
Lee closed his eyes and shook his head. “I am quite capable of caring for myself Mr. Morton.”
“Not so I’ve noticed sir,” Chip replied with a smile and a wink aimed at Andy. Andy tried his best to keep his face impassive not wanting to give the Captain anything to jump at.
Lee rolled his eyes and then glared at Chip. “Well then you best not be derelict in your duties Commander Morton, I would hate to see it reflected in your fit-rep,” Lee responded breaking into a smile as well.
“Keep her safe, Andy.” Lee called out as he moved towards the spiral staircase with Chip pushing him insistently in the back to hurry him out of range of any potential distractions.
“Aye, aye sir. Have a good evening, sirs.”

The trip to Turkey proceeded without incident as the Seaview slid silently through the water to her ultimate destination. The Prince and General had been very interested in the submarine and especially drawn to the Herculite windows on Nelson’s front porch. They had spent the bulk of their time sitting up there looking out the windows and watching operations in the control room.
Lee had engaged in a number of discussions with Eshkan over the course of the voyage when his duties permitted. He found the Prince intelligent but seemingly unengaged and uninterested in the political and social issues of his nation and the world at large. The more he spoke with him the less impressed he became. The Prince was more in tune with the most current fads than current events coming across as very shallow and of limited attention span. He had truly embraced the instant gratification of the playboy lifestyle. In a bygone era he would have been called a fop or dandy, today airhead seemed the most appropriate term.
The Captain also engaged in conversation with the General when the Prince was absent. Abassian was the exact opposite to Eshkan, keenly attuned to the problems and concerns that faced Zorovaristan especially with the impending wealth and attention the small nation would draw when their abundant natural resources began flowing out to a hungry world.
The General in turn seemed to focus closely on Lee observing how he commanded his crew and managed his vessel; taking the measure of the man as it were. He asked deeply probing questions regarding his military career, experiences and command philosophy. It seemed every time Lee looked up Abassian’s eyes were upon him watching every move he made.
~ ~ ~
Entering the control room Chip walked up casually to Lee as he was leaning over the chart table updating a recent change in course. “Ever get the feeling you’re being watched,” Chip said softly.
Lee chuckled softly in response. “It seems like every time I look up Abassian is staring at me; evaluating my command skills or something like that. It’s getting more than a little annoying but what can I say without sounding like a petulant 6 year old demanding that he quit looking at me?”
Chip chuckled as well remembering any number of times he uttered that admonishment to his little sisters especially on those long trips in the car during the dreaded cross-country family vacations. “Why don’t you just look up quickly and stick your tongue out at him? It worked for me with my sisters,” he said with a twinkle in his eye.
Lee couldn’t contain the bark of laughter at the imagery, drawing the attention of the control room crew and the occupants in the nose. “Maybe I should just do that,” he said after he regained his composure.
“You find something amusing Captain,” Admiral Nelson asked as he came up behind his command crew.
Both Lee and Chip turned a little red having been overheard by the Admiral. “Not really, sir,” Lee replied. “Chip was just relaying an anecdote from his warped childhood.” Chip shot him a rather nasty glare at which point they all started to chuckle.
“Well you must share it with me sometime Mr. Morton.” Nelson replied. Looking towards the nose Nelson noticed that both of their guests were seated there taking in the view. “Lee, Chip since both of our guests are present, let’s have a quick meeting to discuss our impending arrival in Turkey, okay?”
“Yes, sir. Mr. O’Brien.” Lee called to the young lieutenant.
“Aye sir?” O’Brien responded immediately.
“You have the conn, I will be up in the nose with the Admiral should something come up.”
“Aye sir. I have the conn.”
Harri moved up to his front porch and greeted the Zorovaristani delegation. “Good morning Eshkan, General. I was wondering if we could meet briefly to take care of a little business.”
“Of course Harri, whatever you need,” Eshkan replied.
As Harri stepped to the table and took a seat, Lee and Chip moved to join them. At a nod from Nelson, Chip hit the button shutting the crash doors isolating them from the rest of the control room before he took a seat at the table.
“Prince Eshkan, General, we are within a day’s journey of the Turkish coast and need to make a decision regarding where we want to make landfall. We are quite able to take you to the capital city of Zorovar in FS-1, which from a security standpoint would be the safest means of getting you home.”
“Admiral that is a most generous offer, however I need to be seen returning to my country in one of our aircraft in a most public manner. Appearances are very important at this juncture especially with my father in such ill health. It makes a statement to the people and our adversaries that I have faith in our military to return me safely to my homeland. In all honesty I would love nothing more than to take another flight in your marvelous flying sub but that will not meet the needs of state.” Eshkan replied.
“I understand completely,” the Admiral answered. “That brings us then to the next option. Where do you want to be taken ashore to catch your flight back home? We can make port in either the Mediterranean or the Black Sea; we just need to know which city you would like. We also have the option of taking FS-1 to the US Air Force base in Ankara or Incirlik, which again would provide a more secure setting for the transfer to your aircraft.”
“Incirlik would seem a perfect choice Admiral,” General Abassian responded. “We could arrive with limited fanfare and our aircraft could likewise arrive without drawing undo attention. Yes, I think that would work well, if you agree your Highness.”
“I always defer to your choices when it comes to security, Martik. If you feel Incirlik is a good choice then Incirlik it is,” Eshkan responded.
“Very good, Incirlik it is. The next question is when,” Nelson inquired
Making some quick mental calculations Captain Crane responded. “At our current course and speed we will be 200 miles out from Incirlik in about 34 hours. Unless you have a need to arrive under the cover of darkness, we can leave Seaview at 0900 local time and have you on the deck in Incirlik by 1030. That would be roughly 44 hours from now. Would that suit your needs?”
“That would be more than fine, Captain,” Abassian replied. “It is more than sufficient time for us to mobilize an aircraft and have it waiting for us at the time of our arrival.”
“Lee please contact General Fairaday, the base commander at Incirlik and make the necessary arrangements.”
“Aye sir. General I’ll need to get with you after the meeting to get the information on your aircraft and personnel to clear their access to the base.” Lee replied.
“Of course, Captain. I will need to contact my office first to get the specifics.”
“Let me know when you are ready, sir and I’ll have Sparks connect you with your people.” Chip interjected.
“Alright gentlemen,” Nelson continued, “I think we’ve taken care of everything we need to at this point in time. As we get closer to departure, let’s reconvene and go over all the preparations for returning you to Zorovaristan Eshkan.”
“That sounds like a plan, Harri. Thank you again for all you have done for us.” Eshkan replied as he rose to his feet. The Prince and General exited up the spiral staircase as Chip opened the crash doors and moved to the radio shack to alert Sparks of the General’s need to contact his personnel in Zorovaristan. Lee watched them all depart but had a somewhat distracted expression on his face.
“Something wrong, Lee,” the Admiral inquired as he took in his Captain’s look.
“No, sir; nothing I can specifically put my finger on but my intuition is telling me there’s something not quite right.”
“With whom, the Prince or the General?”
“My feeling is the General. There was something in his eyes that set me on edge, as I said I can’t quite lay my finger on it,” Lee responded. “Have you heard anything back from Admiral Hardy since you asked him to conduct the investigations?”
“Nothing new, but that was a couple of days ago. Let me touch base with him again and see if he’s been able to turn anything up on either of our guests.”
“Thanks, sir. I hope I’m just being overly cautious but I’ve got this lingering feeling something’s amiss.”
“Knowing the accuracy of your intuition Lee, I’m inclined to take whatever vibes you’re getting from our guest seriously. I’ll let you know what Hardy has to say,” Harri replied as he turned and patted Lee on the shoulder as he headed for the staircase.
~ ~ ~
Harri went back to his cabin and had Sparks put a call through to Admiral Hardy at ONI. “Hi Tom, have you gotten anything new on those searches I asked for?”
“Hello, Harri. We’re not having a whole lot of luck on either front. I think the one that I find most disconcerting is the lack of information on Crane’s parents. There’s absolutely nothing on them. We’ve tried to backtrack their identification documents and have come to the conclusion they were faked. We even tried to get their bodies exhumed for DNA testing only to find out they had been cremated which was a very uncommon means of dealing with unclaimed bodies 30 years ago. Everywhere we turn we run into dead ends. It seems as though someone definitely didn’t want Crane’s background easily traced. Also as we expected, someone else has been looking into the same things we have. We don’t have a name but we’re pretty sure they’re affiliated with your passengers. This thing has definitely put a bee in someone’s bonnet.” Hardy responded.
“We also got more information on the kidnapping. Apparently the kidnappers did send a letter demanding a huge sum of money for the child they grabbed but then never followed up with instructions on how the exchange was to take place. No one ever heard from them again, which seems to lead us back to Lee’s parents and their sudden deaths. I really don’t like this many coincidences, it’s just not normal.”
“That’s very interesting. I agree that there seem to be far too many coincidences for my liking as well. Anything on the General or Prince,” Harri inquired.
“The Prince is pretty much an open book other than having no pictures posted. He’s been educated in the US and Europe and has pretty much lived the playboy’s lifestyle. He’s got a degree in business from Harvard but his grades were lackluster, indicating the minimum amount of effort needed to pass. What seems to be a point of dissention among a number of people inside Zorovaristan is the fact he eschewed the traditional military service you see with many of the royal families especially those in the direct line of succession. There is a general feeling that he doesn’t have the skills or innate abilities to lead his nation.”
“That leads us to General Abassian. Not much on him. He touts the party line and has been very supportive of the current regime. He’s been acting as Prince Eshkan’s primary advisor for the last seven months or so, ever since the King’s health took a turn for the worse. My guess is they’re trying to give the Prince exposure to leadership and command presence that military service would have instilled in him had he put in his time. They don’t want a total novice taking the throne when the King passes.”
“Do you think he could be behind the attempt on Eshkan’s life,” Harri asked.
“It’s possible, military coups aren’t unheard of, but based on what we’ve found thus far I don’t think it likely. Why?”
“Lee says he’s got a feeling that something isn’t quite right with the General. There’s nothing he can pinpoint, just his intuition. Having known and worked with Lee for so long I’m inclined to give his ‘feelings’ credence when the facts generally don’t support his notion. There have been too many instances where he has been proven right,” Nelson replied.
“I know what you mean Harri. His hunches and gut feelings have kept him alive in situations where he had no business surviving. I’ll have my staff look even closer at the General, maybe shake his family tree and see what falls out,” Hardy answered. “So when are you due to return them to Zorovaristan?”
“We should be putting them on the tarmac in Incirlik in a little under 48 hours. They’re making arrangements now for an aircraft to meet them there for transport back to Zorovar. We offered to take them in on FS-1 but they want a public display of one of their planes bringing the heir home to support his father and country.”
“I’ll get my people busy on this new line of research and hopefully get you something tangible before they depart Seaview.”
“Thanks Tom, Nelson out.”
Harri sat back in his chair thinking over the new information regarding Lee’s parents, if they even were his parents. Based on what Hardy had said it did appear as if there was a very conscious effort to hide any information related to the people who had been killed in the auto accident that left Lee as the sole survivor.
“What if Lee really is the heir to the Zorovaristani throne? He says he’s not interested in knowing but is he just saying that so as not to hurt my feelings or is he really curious about the possibility,” Harri thought to himself. Could he give up his son now that he had finally ‘found’ him? A wave of sadness and dread washed over him as he thought over the various scenarios. Lost in his musings Harri was pulled out of his reverie by a knock on the door. “Come,” he called.
Lee opened the door and entered his cabin. He walked over to the Admiral’s desk and casually perched on the corner. “I was in the radio shack when your call went through to Admiral Hardy, did he have anything new to report?”
Harri looked at Lee for a long moment before responding. “No, nothing new. His search is raising more questions than finding answers, I’m afraid. The biggest questions revolve around your parents. Their credentials were faked so there’s no trail there to follow and an attempt to collect DNA samples has come up empty since they were both cremated, which was a very uncommon practice for unclaimed bodies 30 years ago. There’s no way of knowing if they even were your parents. Tom also indicated there are others sniffing around looking for the same information, which was not unexpected,” Nelson reported.
Lee’s face remained impassive at the news. “Have they come up with anything on our guests,” he inquired further.
“Aren’t you the least bit intrigued about this Lee? The news that the people who were assumed to be your parents were not who they were purported to be and every attempt to find out who they really were has run into a dead end. Aren’t you at all curious about where your family came from?” Harri responded.
Looking squarely into the Admiral’s eyes Lee responded. “Harri it’s a moot point as far as I’m concerned. My parents died over 30 years ago; I’ve made my peace with that. I have what I’ve wanted most in life with you and Chip and the NIMR family. I was being honest with you when I told you I don’t want to know if I’m related to Eshkan. I’m happy where I am and don’t need anything else. Even if I proved to be heir to the throne I would never take it. My country, my home, my heart is here and that’s not going to change.”
Harri smiled at Lee feeling the pride and love for his adopted son warm his soul. Clearing his throat to hide the swell of emotion he replied to Lee’s question. “There’s not much information on our guests either. Apparently Eshkan has taken to the international playboy lifestyle whole heartedly. He decided to forego time in the military as is apparently the family custom, for life in the fast lane, which according to Hardy has not played well with some back home. Abassian has been supportive of the current regime and was assigned as Eshkan’s primary advisor about the time the King’s health started to decline. The general consensus is that he was given the task of educating the young man on leadership and command so that he would be better prepared to take the throne when the king dies.”
“That was probably a bit of a bitter pill for him to swallow having dedicated his life to serving his country,” Lee replied.
“Could be. Hardy is expanding his investigation to Abassian’s family and others in line for the throne should Eshkan be taken out of the picture.”
“Makes sense, I’ll be interested to see where that line of speculation ends up. Oh, I’ve talked with Chip and the plans we discussed earlier for getting our passengers into Turkey are all set. General Fairaday has approved the use of his base and airfield for the transfer. The Zorovaristani Air Force will have a plane waiting in Incirlik to pick up the royal party and return them Zorovar. If all goes well we should be shed of them and all this intrigue in less than two days,” Lee said with a smile.
“Getting a little antsy, Lee? As passengers go they have been about the easiest ones we’ve ever dealt with,” Harri joked.
“I’m just a little tired of Abassian’s constant scrutiny. I kind of feel like some prize horse being sized up for purchase, I keep waiting for him to ask to see my teeth,” Lee laughed. “I’m just ready to go back to counting plankton and fending off oversized jellyfish; you know the normal stuff.”
Harri laughed out loud. “Understood. Well, why don’t you have Cookie set us up with a farewell dinner tomorrow night in the nose and we can toast our passengers on their way.”
“Aye, aye sir, with pleasure.” Lee said with a smile as he rose and exited the Admiral’s cabin.
~ ~ ~
Lee was the last one to make it to the nose as everyone assembled for the farewell dinner. As he descended the stairs he made eye contact with the Admiral as he entered the room. Harri was speaking with Eshkan and Abassian, their backs were to Lee so they didn’t notice his arrival.
“Harri I would consider it a very great favor if you and Lee would join us on the flight back to Zorovaristan. I would like to show you both my very deep appreciation for what you have done to see us safely returned home,” Eshkan stated.
Before responding Harri caught Lee giving him a very subtle shake of his head indicating that that was not acceptable to him. Lee quickly pointed to himself and Chip and gave a nod letting him know that they would accept the invitation.
“That is a very generous offer Eshkan, but I have a number of experiments reaching a critical point plus other business that I must see to in the next couple of days that can’t be put off. May I suggest that Captain Crane and Commander Morton could accompany you as my representatives? If time permits I could come out later on FS-1 and then we can return to Seaview without inconveniencing you with having to return my officers.” Lee gave Harri a quick nod of approval.
“Of course Harri, Lee and Commander Morton would be most welcome in your stead. I realize this is very last moment and you do have other commitments.”
Watching Abassian’s face during the conversation, Harri got the distinct impression he was not pleased with the invitations. His expression softened, in what seemed relief, when Harri declined the invitation and offered to send Lee and Chip in his stead. “Curious,” he thought to himself. “Maybe Lee’s hunch is right on track.”
“Fine. Lee,” Nelson said finally acknowledging Lee’s entrance and waving him forward, “looks like you and Chip are to be wined and dined in fine fashion as guests of Eshkan.”
“Outstanding sir,” Lee replied. “I look forward to seeing your country and meeting your people Eshkan.”
“I assure you Lee you will have a grand time and will be hard pressed to return to your Seaview,” Eshkan replied with a large smile.
“Oh I don’t think there’s anything on earth that would keep Lee from his Gray Lady. He’d marry her if that were an option,” Chip interjected laughingly. Nelson and the rest of the Seaview officer’s present laughed as well as Lee shot Chip a glare and then joined in on the laughter. With that the crash doors opened and Cookie and his assistants began bringing in the first course of the evening’s meal.
Harri motioned to the table and all the diners claimed their seats as the appetizer was placed before them. One of the galley stewards produced a bottle of wine and filled each person’s glass before exiting and closing the doors behind him.
Harri picked up his glass. “To new friends and a long friendship,” he said toasting their guests.
“To new friends,” was the response from the table followed by clinking of glasses and a sip of wine.
The meal was a sumptuous affair by Seaview standards, Cookie had pulled out all the stops producing a five star, four course meal that left everyone sated. As the last dessert dish was removed, Harri produced a very old bottle of Napoleon brandy to finish off the meal. The assembled men broke off into smaller groups and chatted quietly sipping on the fine liquor.
Lee finished his drink first. “Well gentlemen,” he said to Harri, Chip, Eshkan and Abassian, “since I am now going for a visit tomorrow I need to get packed and take care of a few things before taking off. If you’ll excuse me I’m going to head back to my cabin.”
“Of course Lee, by all means,” Harri responded.
“Admiral I will excuse myself as well, since I’ll be joining the group too.” Chip added.
“Of course Chip. Have a good evening gentlemen and I’ll see you in the morning.”
Both Lee and Chip exited up the staircase to go to their quarters. Once out of sight of the Prince and the General, Lee motioned to Chip to follow him to his quarters. They moved down the corridor and entered Lee’s cabin.
“Why didn’t you want the Admiral going on this trip Lee,” Chip inquired having seen Lee’s interaction with Nelson.
“As I’ve already told the Admiral, I’ve got a funny feeling that something about this trip just doesn’t feel right. I’ve recently got the impression that there’s something going on with Abassian. The closer we get to Turkey the more that feeling grows. There have been subtle changes in his demeanor and he seems somewhat distracted and unsettled. The Admiral asked Hardy to do a little snooping into the General’s background and family associations to see if there’s anything there of concern but he hasn’t come up with anything as yet. I don’t want the Admiral put at risk should my intuition prove to be on track.”
“Oh so it’s okay to serve me up instead,” Chip joked with a hint of hurt in his voice.
Lee looked up sharply and regarded his friend, thinking he meant what he said seriously. “Chip if you really don’t want to go, let me know.”
“Lee I was kidding. Like there’s anyway I would let you walk into danger when I have the chance to be there to save your skinny butt,” Chip responded taking in his friend’s worried look. “Geez this really does have you spooked doesn’t it?”
“Yeah, it does and my concern seems to be growing by the minute. Being invited along actually gives us the opportunity to provide Eshkan some more security should things turn ugly.”
“Okay, I’m with you Skipper. You know you can always count on me to have your back.”
“I know that Chip and count myself extremely fortunate to have you there. When you’re packing your gear make sure you throw in a side arm, radio, tracking transponder and survival kit. Use a backpack as a carry-on along with your suitcase so we’ll be able to haul our important gear easily if we need to.”
“So you think there’ll be some attempt on the aircraft don’t you,” Chip asked.
“That makes the most sense,” Lee replied. “I want us ready to react immediately if the situation demands it.”
Chip nodded his concurrence. “I’ll see you in the morning,” Chip said as he left Lee’s cabin.
~ ~ ~
Lee set about collecting his gear and packing his bags for their trip to Zorovaristan. As he was shoving his survival gear into his backpack there was a knock at the door. Lee picked up his pack and laid it down behind his desk, not knowing who was at the door. “Come.”
Nelson entered his cabin. “Okay Lee, do you want to tell me why you don’t want me going on that flight tomorrow?”
“Harri I think if something is going to happen it’s going to be on that flight, I don’t want you in jeopardy. If we make it safely to Zorovaristan then you can come that evening or the next day in FS-1. My general level of discomfort is growing and I can’t really tell you why. I just have a really bad feeling about this.”
“Maybe I should pull you and Chip off citing last minute mission duties elsewhere.” Harri responded clearly worried about his son and XO.
“I don’t think that’s a viable option, Harri. We were asked to provide protection for the Prince and I don’t think that ends at the shoreline. Chip and I will be packing carefully and will be ready for anything that crops up.”
“I don’t like it but I agree with you Lee. You two be damn careful and don’t take any unnecessary chances.”
“I’m always careful, Dad,” Lee said with a mischievous glimmer in his eye. “Besides, Chip will be there to ensure everything remains under control.”
Harri laughed as did Lee. At least with them together he knew they had someone to watch their back and keep each other safe. “Finish your packing son and try to get to bed early. You’ll need all your wits about you tomorrow if what you expect comes about.”
“Aye, sir,” Lee replied. “Have a good evening sir.”
Harri smiled and left Lee’s cabin heading to his own to check with Hardy to see if anything new had been uncovered on their guests.
~ ~ ~
By 0730 the nose of Seaview and FS-1 were the center of a flurry of activity. Lee and Chip had already had their baggage brought down to FS-1 and stowed. Chief Sharkey was currently running an extensive pre-flight inspection to ensure the captain’s baby was ready to roll. Lee had also been in contact with General Fairaday in Incirlik confirming their estimated arrival time and had been informed by the General that the Zorovaristani royal helicopter had arrived late last night and was now being warmed up and pre-flighted by her pilots. The fact that they were flying on a helicopter instead of a fixed wing aircraft ratcheted Lee’s discomfort level even higher.
Lee headed up to the Admiral’s cabin to touch base before the official farewell in the nose. He knocked on the door and entered following the Admiral’s “Come”. “Good morning, sir,” Lee said with a smile.
“Morning Lee. Are you all ready for you trip?”
“Yes, sir. I’ve got clearance from Incirlik and have been informed that the Prince’s helicopter is already at the base waiting for our arrival.”
Harri looked up at Lee in surprise. “Helicopter?”
“Helicopter, that’s what General Fairaday relayed when I called him this morning to confirm our operations and arrival times. It’s not the aircraft I would have chosen to rapidly transport someone at risk to a distant location, even if it is jet propelled. Fairaday said it was the royal helicopter and in my mind that means amenities and not offensive capabilities. Plus there are no other escort aircraft with it. God this screams assassination attempt Harri,” Lee said raking his hand through his hair.
“I’m starting to get the same feeling you are. Lee I’m going to offer FS-1 as an escort craft,” Harri replied.
“I’ll bet you dollars to donuts they turn you down citing something like national pride in their military or some such thing to justify why they decline your offer. I think the best thing you can do is get blanket authorization to enter Zorovaristani airspace telling them you’re not quite sure when you’ll be able to make it to the capital. That way you can leave shortly after we do and shadow our flight should we encounter problems.”
“That sounds like a good approach and increases my comfort margin for your and Chip’s safety.”
“Have you heard anything back from Admiral Hardy, sir,” Lee inquired.
“No I couldn’t get in touch with him last night, he was locked away in meetings. I’ll try and get in touch before you leave.”
“Well I’ll get out of your hair then. I’ll go see to our passengers and make sure they are ready to depart.”
“Sounds like a plan. I’ll let you know if Tom has come up with anything new.”
~ ~ ~
Nelson got his call through to Admiral Hardy but unfortunately he had nothing new on General Abassian, if he was involved his tracks were well covered. Harri made his way down to the nose finding everyone assembled and ready to board FS-1 for their flight to Incirlik.
“Ah good morning Harri,” Eshkan said.
“Good morning Eshkan, General Abassian,” Harri replied with a nod. “So are you all ready for your journey home?”
“Yes, quite ready and quite excited about being home again. That’s not to say I haven’t enjoyed my time aboard your fantastic submarine,” Eshkan replied with a smile.
“Quite understandable. Lee has told me that your transport home is a helicopter. I was wondering if you would like to have FS-1 fly as escort for part of your journey back to ensure you encounter no unfriendlies during your flight.” Harri offered.
“That is most kind Admiral,” Abassian replied, “but wholly unnecessary. The royal helicopter is fully armored with a host of equipment to discourage any such attempt. Plus it would not give the appropriate appearance to have a foreign aircraft providing security. Once we enter our airspace additional aircraft will escort us home.”
“Very well General, I just wanted you and Prince Eshkan to know that our services are still at your disposal until you safely touch down in Zorovar. I do have a request for you though, would it be possible to get preauthorization to enter your airspace now. I’m not sure when I will be able to break free from my meetings and experiments and clearance ahead of time should significantly speed up my departure,” Nelson countered.
“Of course, Admiral,”Eshkan replied. “Martik please arrange for that clearance now before we depart.”
“Yes your Highness.” Abassian replied, seemingly a little put off by the request and moved to the radio shack to have Sparks make contact.
“Chip would see to it that the General is put in contact with his people in Zorovaristan,” the Admiral asked.
“Yes, sir. Right away,” Chip replied.
As Chip followed the General to the radio shack, Harri and Lee locked eyes both apparently picking up on Abassian’s discomfort with Harri’s request for a “carte blanche” clearance into Zorovaristani airspace. More and more cards were seemingly being stacked against the Prince successfully making it home as each attempt at ensuring his security was deflected. Harri’s discomfort with sending Lee and Chip into a potentially deadly situation likewise grew as it appeared as though Lee’s premonitions were fully manifesting themselves.
As Eshkan moved to stare out the windows, Harri sent Lee a quick head nod indicating he wanted a private word with him before they departed. Lee moved quietly over to the Admiral’s side next to the credenza and poured them each a cup of coffee as a cover for their conversation. “That niggling feeling I’ve had has developed into a full blown body slam Lee. I think your intuition is right on the mark and there will no doubt be an attempt on Eshkan’s life probably after you cross into Zorovaristani airspace. Are you and Chip prepared for that,” Harri inquired.
“Yes, sir. As I said last night Chip and I have ‘packed’ quite carefully. We’re lucky we’ll be bypassing any security scanners or luggage x-ray machines. I’m honestly hoping this is just my overactive imagination but I don’t think I’m wrong.”
“You and Chip be careful, don’t take any unnecessary chances. I believe it’s a 5 hour flight to the capital by helicopter so I’ll have Sharkey return from Incirlik immediately once he’s dropped you off and pick me up. We should be about two hours behind you and can make that time up in a hurry if we go supersonic.”
Lee smiled at the Admiral’s protective streak. “I just hope we haven’t tipped our hand sir. If we haven’t then I think the General will be rudely surprised should he try something en route.” Lee and the Admiral both sipped on their coffee as they noticed Abassian return from the Radio Shack.
“Admiral, you are welcome any time into our airspace. All we need is a radio call from your pilot alerting our air traffic controllers before you enter,” Abassian reported.
“Thank you General. I am quite anxious to see Zorovaristan and will endeavor to tie up my business as quickly as possible.”
Looking at his watch Lee moved towards the hatch to FS-1. “Well gentlemen, it’s about time for us to get aboard FS-1 and depart for Incirlik.” At that Chip quickly nodded to his CO and the Admiral and descended the ladder to begin warming up the systems.
“Harri, thank you once again for all you’ve done for us. I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to travel on all your marvelous submarines and to meet your exceptional crew. I can’t wait until you arrive in Zorovar, I am very much looking forward to being your host and showing you the beauty and splendor of my homeland,” Eshkan said as he moved to shake hands with the Admiral.
“Although this has not been the happiest of times, we have enjoyed having you and General Abassian aboard. It has been our pleasure and I look forward to seeing your country,” Nelson replied. “Have a good flight your Highness and I hope to see you tomorrow if not sooner.” At that Eshkan smiled and descended the ladder into FS-1.
“Admiral, I too thank you for your hospitality and giving us the time necessary to ensure the Prince’s safe return to Zorovaristan. Your submarine is amazing and I also have appreciated the opportunity to sail on her,” Abassian said as he shook hands with Nelson.
“Thank you General. As I said it has been a pleasure having you and the Prince aboard. Have a safe flight.” Abassian then moved to the hatch and climbed down into FS-1.
As Lee moved to follow Abassian, Harri grabbed his arm as he passed by. “Remember what I said Lee, no unnecessary chances; you and Chip better be there in Zorovar to meet me when I land, or else.”
“We’ll do everything within our power to do just that, Harri,” Lee said with a smile and a pat on the Admiral’s arm. “See you soon, sir.” Lee then turned and climbed down into FS-1 and the crewman sealed the hatch.
~ ~ ~
The flight to Incirlik went off without a hitch. FS-1 landed easily on the tarmac in Incirlik and taxied over to the Zorovaristani helicopter positioned outside one of the large aircraft hangars off the runway. As they pulled to a stop Lee and Chip quickly powered down FS-1 and made preparations to turn the craft over to Chief Sharkey for the return flight to Seaview.
As Sharkey opened the aft hatch they were met by both an Air Force security team and the base commander. Lee and Chip exited the sub first and immediately snapped to attention saluting General Fairaday. “Commander Crane and Lt. Commander Morton, USRN Seaview, sir.” Returning their salute the General stepped up to meet the Seaview officers.
“Captain Crane, Lt. Commander Morton, welcome to Incirlik Air Base gentlemen,” he said extending his hand to each man in turn.
Lee shook hands with the General. “Thank you sir, and thank you for allowing us the use of your runway and facilities for the transfer.” As they completed the military formalities the royal party emerged from FS-1. “General Fairaday may I present Prince Eshkan of Zorovaristan.”
“Your Highness, welcome to Incirlik Air Base, it is an honor to have you here,” Fairaday replied.
“Thank you General Fairaday, we greatly appreciate you allowing us to visit your base, be it ever so briefly. This is General Abassian, head of the Zorovaristan army.” They all shook hands with the introductions.
“Your Highness your helicopter is fueled up and ready to go whenever you are ready to depart. I wish we could have offered you more in the way of hospitality but I do understand your desire to return home as soon as possible to be with your father, “Fairaday replied.
“We will be departing immediately General so that we don’t impose on your hospitality any more than necessary,”Abassian stated. With that he waved to the helicopter aircrew to come and collect luggage and prepare for departure.
“Excuse me Commander Crane, may I have a brief word with you before you depart,” Fairaday said to Lee as he moved away from the Prince and General.
“Of course sir,” Lee said moving off with him. They walked over to the General’s staff car to avoid being overheard by the Zorovaristani delegation.
“I’ve had a full brief from Admiral Nelson this morning before you arrived. We will be continually tracking your flight until you touch down in Zorovar. The Admiral provided us with the transponder frequencies both you and your XO are carrying. We will also be standing by to dispatch search and rescue aircraft and teams should you encounter any aircraft ‘problems’ in the course of your trip. I sincerely hope you’re wrong about all this but in listening to what has transpired I’m inclined to agree with your assessment of the situation. Do you require any equipment or support from us before you depart, Captain?”
“No sir, General. I believe we are well prepared to take on anything that may occur on our flight. I too hope this turns out just to be a case of an overactive imagination on my part but I do very much appreciate your support both here and in the field should we need it. Once we take off, we will activate one of the transponders so you’ll be able to get a fix on us before we’ve cleared the base. If we run into trouble we’ll activate the second transponder to give you an immediate heads up and let you know to send the cavalry.”
“Excellent. Well Captain, I wish you a safe and uneventful trip.”
“Thank you sir,” Lee said as he saluted and turned to return to FS-1 to speak with Sharkey and Chip.
“Everything is set. The Admiral provided the General with our transponder frequencies so they’ll be able to track us once we activate them. Chief, once we lift off and are out of sight you beat feet back to Seaview and pick up the Admiral,” Lee instructed Sharkey.
“Yes sir, Skipper. I’ve got everything all worked out with the Admiral, we’ll be right behind you,” Sharkey replied.
“Good deal, Chief. See you soon.” Lee and Chip both reached down to pick up the small backpacks they had brought with them each containing a transponder and other equipment that might come in handy if things turned sour.

The helicopter was a Sikorsky VH3-D, the same type used by the US President. It was opulently outfitted as befitted the heir to the throne of Zorovaristan. The seats were plush leather affairs and very comfortable. Thick carpet covered the floor of the main cabin, there were small fold down tables between the seats and a bar and lavatory in the rear. As Chip and Lee entered the aircraft they moved to the two open seats on opposite sides of the cabin near the rear and stowed their packs beneath their seats. As the last of the luggage was placed in the cargo pods, the helicopter door was shut and the pilots started up the engines and taxied slowly out to edge of the runway for takeoff.
Gaining clearance from the tower, the helicopter rose quickly and headed northeast towards Zorovaristan. As they took off, Lee unzipped the front pocket of his pack and pulled out his digital camera and snapped a couple of pictures of the airbase through the window as they departed. He smiled somewhat self-consciously as he re-stowed the camera. “I like to have a picture of each US military base I visit, my version of ticking off items from my list. Incirlik makes number 95.” Everyone smiled in recognition of his hobby and began settling in for the long flight. Of course he didn’t tell them that he had just activated his tracking transponder as well.
Shortly thereafter the pilot came on the speaker. “Your Highness, gentlemen, our flight time will be approximately five hours to Zorovar. You are free to move about the cabin but I would highly recommend that you keep your seatbelts fastened when seated; it can get kind of bumpy from time to time. There are drinks and food in the bar should you wish. If there is anything you need please don’t hesitate to press the call button to get our attention.”
Everyone settled in for the long flight pulling out reading material, gazing out the window or leaning back and taking a nap. Everything proceeded well until about 2 hours into the flight when an emergency alarm started going off in the cockpit. The pilots began cycling through switches attempting to correct the reason for the alarm. Everyone was alert and focused on the front of the aircraft watching the flurry of activity. After a few moments the alarm was silenced.
“Sorry about that Your Highness we had a slight glitch with one of the fuel pumps; I think we have it taken care of. Just sit back and relax we’ve still got quite a ways to go,” the pilot said over the intercom.
At that Eshkan nodded and then stood up and made his way back to the lavatory. Once he had closed the door the General arose and moved forward to the cockpit and spoke to the pilots. Lee and Chip regarded him closely. Returning to his seat Abassian relayed what he learned from the pilots “Nothing to worry about gentlemen, they have compensated for the problem.”
No sooner than he said that there was an explosion from outside of the cabin resulting in the helicopter rocking violently and a whole host of alarms sounding off. The pilots worked furiously to stabilize the craft. “Everyone get buckled in back there, we’re losing engine power,” the pilot said tersely over the intercom.
Eshkan emerged immediately from the lavatory and took his seat strapping himself securely in. The General likewise fastened his seatbelt and sat back tensely in his seat. Lee and Chip immediately started returning items they had pulled from their packs and moved to secure them under their seats. At a nod from Lee, Chip also activated his transponder alerting the Air Force that their aircraft was in trouble.
Everyone’s eyes were riveted upon the pilots in the cockpit working to compensate for whatever they lost in the explosion. “Okay I’ve got some bad news, we’re losing engine power rapidly and we can no longer keep this helicopter in the air. Everyone assume crash positions we’re going to have to auto rotate down for a hard landing.”
As the co-pilot was alerting the passengers, the pilot was busy on the radio declaring a flight emergency and providing coordinates back to air traffic control. Everyone became quiet as the pilots fought with the aircraft trying to set themselves up for the emergency landing. The helicopter dropped like a rock and slammed down hard as it landed on the rocky uneven terrain below. Perched awkwardly on a rock outcropping and off balance the craft rocked and fell over sideways sending rotor blades and aircraft parts in all directions.
The cabin began filling with smoke as the stunned occupants tried to gather their wits and ascertain their condition. Eshkan was out cold having hit his head hard against the table next to him. The General, Chip and Lee sported superficial cuts and bruises but by and large were unharmed. Both pilots seemed relatively unharmed as they worked through the switches shutting off the various systems to prevent an errant spark that might cause an explosion from any fuel leaks.
Lee and Chip began quickly extricating themselves from their seats and the odd pieces of debris that had scattered throughout the cabin. Lee moved over to Eshkan and did a rudimentary examination of him to determine if there were other injuries not immediately evident. Not finding any he signaled Chip to come over and help him with the Prince. While they were doing that the General had popped open one of the windows and pushed himself up and out of the helicopter.
Chip and Lee eased Eshkan up and out of the window to the General, who took him and laid him on the ground none too gently. Lee grabbed their packs and passed them up to Chip once he climbed out, then followed suit. The pilots had gone out the front window when it popped out upon impact and were standing next to the General conversing with him.
The area around the crash site consisted of grass covered hills with no trees but there were numerous outcroppings of large rocks and boulders. As Lee and Chip finished their quick visual scan of the terrain they turned back to the rest of their party to find themselves looking down the barrel of the General’s gun.
“What the hell’s going on Abassian,” Lee demanded.
“Oh I think you know Captain, I think you’ve suspected something for quite some time,” the General replied. “I am ensuring that my country gets a ruler that has its best interests at heart not this self-absorbed ass who couldn’t be bothered with the obligations and responsibilities that go along with all the privileges he’s enjoyed for so long. I am truly sorry that I could not have proven conclusively that you are the rightful heir to the throne, Captain Crane. Your training and experience along with your innate abilities as a leader would have made you an outstanding successor to King Mardig.”
“It wouldn’t have mattered if you had proven my relationship to the royal family; I never would have accepted the throne. My allegiance is to the United States and I would not cede my country or my family for anything in the world. So what happens now, you shoot us all and try to pass our deaths off as a result of the helicopter crash,” Lee inquired.
“Only you, Commander Morton and the Prince, then we place your bodies back in the fuselage and set the craft on fire and let it explode seemingly killing you all before you could escape.”
“So why didn’t you just let your assassin into your suite while Eshkan slept and let him take him out that way instead of going to all these lengths? Or wasn’t Nazar part of your plot,” Lee queried.
“The attempted assassination in New York was as much a surprise to me as everyone else. I truly regret that Nazar was needlessly sacrificed; he was a good man and patriot. Those plans were put in motion by someone else to try and spare me from having to take such drastic steps now. I do regret that I must eliminate you and Commander Morton, Captain. I honestly believe you are the missing heir and that was confirmed in my mind when I convinced the Prince to shave his beard revealing how identical you both are.”
By now Eshkan was awake and glowering darkly at the General. “You son of a bitch! How could you do this to me, I have known you since I was a child. I trusted you implicitly.” Eshkan raged in Zorovari.
“I would have supported and protected you with my life if you had only taken your duties and obligations seriously and prepared yourself for the rigors of ruling our country. Instead you chose to ignore your responsibilities and turned your back on your family and your people in favor of living your life of play and parties. I cannot permit you to drag our country down due to your ineptitude and selfish ways. You are an embarrassment to the country and a disappointment to us all,” Abassian ranted at the clueless Prince.
Pointing at Crane, Abassian continued, “He should have been the rightful heir to the throne. He is everything you are not. Under his leadership Zorovaristan could have risen to new heights of power and respect among the nations of the world. The nation and the people would have thrived under his care.”
As the General and pilots focused on Eshkan, Lee quickly drew his weapon. Abassian caught the sudden movement and changed his aim to the Captain. Lee’s reactions were that much faster and the General went down in a heap. In the sudden confusion of the gunfire Lee grabbed Eshkan by the wrist pulling him up to his feet and started running for the nearest rock outcrop. Chip and the pilots now had their weapons drawn and were also running for cover in opposite directions.
Shocked and disoriented by the scene that just occurred and the rough treatment at Lee’s hands Eshkan wrenched free from Lee’s grip falling to the ground. “How dare to treat me like that, I will not be hauled around like some child’s toy,” he fumed. He stood up and started to return to the helicopter totally oblivious to his circumstances.
As Lee moved to grab the Prince and pull him back to the safety of the rocks Chip spied one of the pilots coming up behind Lee and the Prince. Chip stood raising his gun. ”Lee lookout behind you,” he screamed. The pilot swung his gun towards Chip and both fired simultaneously. Their bullets impacted at the same time and both men were slammed to the ground from the force.
“Chip,” screamed Lee in terror. Lee moved rapidly forward grabbing Eshkan by the front of his shirt. He dragged him back to the relative security of the rocks and slammed him down hard onto the ground. “You move one more time without me telling you to and I will shoot you myself,” Lee growled at him. “Get between those rocks and stay there until I call you.”
Eshkan was wide-eyed with fear both from the recent gun play and now from the feral and predatory look in Lee’s eyes. The intensity of Lee’s glare had him meekly wedging himself between the two large boulders where they had sought cover. Endangering or injuring one of the men under Lee’s command or even worse a member of his family was a sure catalyst to turn Lee from the controlled and composed Captain of Seaview into the extremely dangerous and lethal agent ONI so highly prized. Ensuring the Prince was safely stuffed between the rocks Lee moved off stealthily in search of the co-pilot. He circled slowly back towards the helicopter hoping to spot the other man without drawing his attention.
Moving back around the helicopter fuselage he spotted the co-pilot, his gun pointed directly at the unconscious Chip Morton ready to finish him off. He was never given the opportunity to drop his weapon as Lee’s shot entered his left ear and exited his right. Both he and his gun hit the ground at roughly the same moment. Lee next moved over to the pilot; Chip’s bullet had been right on target and this man was also no longer a concern either.
With the opposing forces neutralized Lee bolted to Chip’s side. Chip had been shot high on his right shoulder and was bleeding heavily. He had also managed to knock himself out when his head made contact with a large rock on the ground where he fell. Lee quickly checked for a pulse and looked at Chip’s pupils then ran back to the helicopter to retrieve his pack. Returning to Chip’s side he pulled out his first aid kit and got to work treating Chips wounds. He quickly cut away Chip’s shirt and applied pressure bandages to the gunshot entry and exit wounds stemming the flow of blood. He next bandaged the bleeding head wound and did a quick exam of the rest of his body to see if there were any other injuries present.
As he finished applying his first aid, Lee stood and moved to collect the Prince from his hiding place. “Eshkan, you can come out now; it’s safe.”
Eshkan slowly extracted himself from between the rocks and peered carefully around as if not believing the coast was clear. Lee walked over and took him gently by the arm and led him back to helicopter and eased him onto the ground seating him with his back against the aircraft. He took the Prince’s head between his hands and peered closely into his eyes. He was still bleeding slightly from the head injury sustained in the crash and his pupils were definitely unequal in size.
“It looks like you’ve got a real nice concussion there. Stay here, I’ll be right back and take care of your wounds,” Lee said softly the anger and menace in his eyes gone, now that the situation was under his control. He climbed back into the helicopter and retrieved blankets, pillows and seat cushions along with food and water. Lee fashioned two beds out of the seat cushions then moved back over to Chip and gently picked him up and carried him over to the helicopter. After laying him down on the makeshift bed and covering him with blankets he turned his attention to Eshkan.
The Prince was still overwhelmed and in shock from what had transpired. Nothing in his life had prepared him for the violence and carnage that had resulted from the attempt on his life. He had a thousand yard stare and had mentally shut down. He mumbled distractedly in Zorovari. Lee spoke to him in his own language and he responded numbly to Lee’s requests to look one way or the other or to swallow the pain pills Lee offered him, never even noticing the change in languages. Having been pushed just too far he finally gave up and passed out. Lee gently got him situated on the second bed and covered him with a blanket.
Finished with tending to Chip and Eshkan, Lee wearily sat down between them. He rummaged through his pack and pulled out a two way radio. “Crane to FS-1, Crane to FS-1 do you read me?”
After what seemed like hours he got a response. “FS-1 to Crane we read you. Lee what is your situation? Over,” Nelson replied.
“Admiral we have crash landed on a hilltop somewhere in Zorovaristan. Chip has been critically wounded and has a concussion, the Prince has a concussion and is in shock and the General and his two pilots are dead. Over,” Lee responded tiredly.
“Are you alright, son? Are you injured? Over.”
“Just bumps and bruises Admiral otherwise I’m fine. Do you have our position? Over.”
“Affirmative. The Air Force has scrambled their rescue chopper with the permission of the Zorovaristani authorities and should be there in about an hour. There are also rescue choppers coming out of Zorovar to assist. Their estimated time of arrival is an hour as well. I’ve got Jamie with me and we should be at your location within 30 minutes. Over.”
“Copy that FS-1. Everyone should be okay until your arrive. I’ve got both Chip and Eshkan bandaged up, their vitals are strong and both are currently unconscious. Over.”
“Understood Lee, just hang in there. See you shortly Son, over and out.”
“I’ll be here, sir. Over and out.” Lee sat there quietly for a few moments feeling the weariness settle in his bones as the adrenaline surge waned and the events of the day took their toll. He stared unseeingly out over the landscape as he tried to process all that had gone on. He returned his focus as he heard Chip groan softly on cushions next to him. Moving closer to his side he grabbed his left hand.
“Come on Chip, can you wake up for me? Help will be here shortly and I’m sure Jamie will be thrilled to have you awake so you can thoroughly enjoy his rant about not exercising sufficient care and remaining uninjured.”
Chip moaned again and then slowly opened his eyes finding a very concerned Lee Crane staring expectantly down at him. “Ughgod,” he said hoarsely. As the first wave of pain from his injuries crashed over him he tightened his grip on Lee’s hand and sucked in a deep breath.
“Hey just relax, bro. You’re going to be okay and the cavalry will be here shortly. Do you think you could choke down a couple of ibuprofen and some water,” Lee asked.
Chip gave him a very small nod indicating he thought he could handle that much. Lee fished the pain killers out of his first aid kit then helped Chip sit up a bit to take the pills and wash them down with a few sips of water. “You okay? What happened after I went down?” Chip inquired.
“Yeah, I’m fine. You mean after you stupidly stood up and made yourself a prime target,” Lee chided him.
Not rising to the bait Chip said, “Yeah,” and closed his eyes with a grimace as another wave of pain shot through him.
“Well after you saved my and Eshkan’s sorry hides by shooting the pilot, I corralled the wayward Prince and shoved him between two rocks. Then I eased my way out and found the co-pilot just as he was about to put another bullet in you. After I dealt with him, I took care of your wounds and Eshkan’s and called the Admiral. He should be here any minute with the US Air Force rescue team and Zorovaristani rescue team close behind.” Lee sat back and rested his hand lightly on Chip’s left shoulder. “Just kick back and rest Chip, you’ve more than earned your pay for today. I’ve got everything else under control; let me play mother hen for a change.”
Chip gave him a half-hearted snort and nodded off to sleep as Lee kept watch. About 15 minutes later Lee heard the unmistakable sound of FS-1 approaching from the west. Lee got to his feet and grabbed a towel from his pack and waved it back and forth to attract the Admiral’s attention. FS-1 wagged her wings as she flew over letting Lee know he had been spotted.
The Admiral circled over the crash site until he spotted a suitable location to set down. Shifting into vertical landing mode, a new capability added by Lee when he designed the replacement for the flying sub destroyed in the Arctic, he extended the landing gear and carefully lowered FS-1 onto the ground. As FS-1 came to a rest the rear hatch flew open and Jamie came bolting out and ran towards the downed helicopter and his patients. Nelson and Kowalski quickly followed suit after they powered down FS-1’s systems.
“Hi Jamie,” Lee called out to the CMO. “Glad you could make it. Chip is in sore need of your services.”
Jamieson nodded and moved quickly to Chip’s side and started ascertaining his condition. He peeled back Lee’s field dressing and gently prodded the wound much to Chip’s consternation as he woke with a start. “Dang Jamie, do you have to do that, that really hurts,” Chip hissed at him.
“In answer to your question Mr. Morton, yes I have to. I need to find out just how much damage you’ve done to yourself this time so just suck it up,” Jamie replied with a hint of a smile. He replaced the dressing with a new one and taped it in place. Next he looked into Chip’s eyes to gauge the severity of the concussion and then checked the wound on his head. He moved quickly to get an IV set up to replenish needed fluids, introduce a stronger pain medication and stabilize Chip’s condition.
Kowalski had moved to Prince Eshkan and began evaluating him as well. His examination revealed nothing more than a mild concussion and a few bumps and scrapes. During Kowalski’s exam the Prince never regained consciousness causing some concern for the rating. “Doc, I can’t get the Prince to wake up. He looks to have only a mild concussion; I don’t understand why he hasn’t come around.”
Finishing up with Chip, Jamieson moved over to confirm Kowalski’s findings. After checking his vitals and looking at his eyes he responded to Kowalski’s query. “He’s in shock Ski. I think he probably is suffering from severe sensory overload and his body has just shut down until he is able to deal with the exhaustion and stress of what occurred.” Jamieson pulled out another IV and set up the Prince with needed fluids and meds to reverse the shock.

As Doc and Ski were working with the injured, Lee walked up to greet the Admiral. “Nice to see you so soon, sir.”
“Are you okay son,” Harri asked placing his hands on his son’s shoulders making a quick scan of his body for signs of injury then looking deeply into his eyes.
“Yes sir. As I said I only have a few bruises, Chip and Eshkan took the brunt of the damage this time.”
“So what went down here,” Harri inquired.
“It was pretty much what we had figured. Abassian was intent on taking Eshkan out of the picture so that someone else could ascend the throne, he never said who though. He and his supporters felt that Eshkan was not a suitable replacement for the ailing king and they had no intention of letting him take the helm as it were. My feeling was that Abassian was not in it for his own personal benefit but for his perceived need to ensure someone better prepared to take Zorovaristan into the future took over.”
“He did admit that he was behind the efforts investigating my parents, not that that was really any surprise. What was surprising is that he said the attempt on Eshkan’s life in New York was a surprise to him; he hadn’t been part of that plan. Anyway after they sabotaged the helicopter forcing us to make an emergency landing all hell broke loose. Abassian was going to eliminate the three of us and then torch the helicopter to hide the fact we had been shot. While he was ranting at Eshkan, I took the opportunity to draw my weapon and when he moved to fire on me I took him out of the picture.” Lee said with a pang of regret.
“From there everyone scattered for cover. I tried to get Eshkan out of the line of fire but he just lost it and broke away from me. As I was going after him, Chip spotted the pilot taking aim on us and drew his attention and his fire, which is how he got shot. After I got Eshkan back under control, I shoved him in between some rocks and then went looking for the co-pilot. I found him just as he was going to finish off Chip. Needless to say he was not given the opportunity carry that out. You know the rest of the story from there on.”
Hidden from view behind the helicopter, Harri gave Lee a quick hug. “You always manage to scare the hell out of me, you know that,” he said as he released his son. Not being a particularly demonstrative person, Harri was still surprised at his need to be in contact with Lee to reassure himself that he was okay and to provide what physical support he could to his ‘child’.
“Wouldn’t want you to get bored now, Dad” Lee said tiredly. As they walked back over to where Jamie was working on Chip and Eshkan they heard the roar of the approaching Air Force helicopters, which were quickly followed by the Zorovaristani force arriving from the opposite direction.
Once all the choppers were on the ground it was decided that the US forces would transport Chip back to Incirlik for treatment along with Dr. Jamieson and Kowalski. The Zorovaristani forces would take Eshkan to Zorovar to be treated by his personal physician. They also collected the bodies of the would-be assassins for return and disposition. The Admiral and Captain Crane would follow the Zorovaristani aircraft to Zorovar so that they could check on the Prince and answer any questions the authorities may have regarding the assassination attempt on the Prince.

Two days had passed before Prince Eshkan was up to taking visitors. He was resting quietly in bed as Lee and Harri were ushered into his chambers. “Lee, Harri, it’s good to see you again. Welcome to Zorovaristan,” he said lightly.
“Prince Eshkan, thank you. You’re looking much better than the last time I saw you,” Harri responded. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m feeling much better though I’m still plagued with the occasional headache, but I’m told that is a normal aftereffect with a concussion.”
“Speaking from experience, I can vouch for that,” Lee replied chuckling quietly while Harri rolled his eyes.
“Lee, please accept my most sincere thanks for what you and Commander Morton did to protect my life. I would not be here today if you had not been with me on that trip and put your lives at risk to save mine,” Eshkan said earnestly. “I don’t remember all of the events, not that I’m sure I really want to but I do recognize your quick thinking and actions are the only reason we are all here today. Again thank you.”
“You’re welcome your Highness. I’m glad that we were able to prevent the General from carrying out his plan and that the injuries you suffered were relatively minor in the grand scheme of things,” Lee replied.
“How is Commander Morton by the way? I know his injuries were much more severe than mine.”
“I talked to Chip this morning and he said he’s feeling much better. The Air Force will fly him, Dr. Jamieson and Kowalski out to Seaview by helicopter and drop them off sometime this afternoon. I know he’s anxious to get back to the boat.” Nelson answered.
“That’s good to hear.” Eshkan replied. “There is one thing I do think I remember after I was sitting down by the helicopter,” he said looking intently at Lee. “You started speaking to me in Zorovari didn’t you Lee.” Eshkan asked in his native language.
“Yes, I did. You were mumbling in Zorovari and only seemed to respond when I spoke to you in that.” Lee responded much to the surprise of Nelson.
“Why didn’t you let us know that you spoke our language? Were you trying to eavesdrop on our conversations?” Eshkan queried somewhat irked.
“No. You never spoke Zorovari in our presence; both you and the General only conversed in English. Had you spoken in Zorovari I would have let you know that I understood what you were saying so that you were aware I knew your language.” Lee responded.
“You speak Zorovari Lee,” Nelson asked extremely surprised by the revelation.
“Yes sir. One of the foster families I lived with as a child was Zorovaristani immigrants and that’s primarily what they spoke. You know I have an affinity for languages so I picked it up pretty quickly,” Lee responded.
“I see,” Eshkan finally said after giving that bit of information some thought. “Harri, Lee, my father would like to meet you and thank you personally for returning me home to Zorovaristan. Would you be willing to meet with him tomorrow morning?”
“Of course Eshkan, we would consider it a great honor.” Nelson replied.
“Very good, I shall have us added to his calendar. In the meantime are we keeping you adequately entertained? I’m sorry that I haven’t been up to escorting you around personally but I hope to change that tomorrow. After the meeting with my father I would like to take you around to my favorite places and then host a dinner in your honor for all you’ve done for me. ”
“Yes, we’ve kept busy visiting your museums and monuments and of course tying up loose ends from the events of the trip here. Although Lee wasn’t in any condition to do much of anything the first day we were here; he slept most of the day away leaving me to my own devices,” Nelson answered.
“Well I leave you to your own whims one more day then tomorrow we will have the entire day together.”
“We look forward to it,” Harri responded. “Until then we’ll get out of your hair so you can rest and recover.” With that Harri and Lee turned and left the Prince’s suite.

Harri and Lee returned to their chateau to get ready to go out for another day of sightseeing.
“You’re full of surprises today Lee, why didn’t you tell me you spoke Zorovari?”
“Actually it didn’t really occur to me because neither the Prince nor the General ever spoke in their native tongue in our presence. I haven’t spoken it in years.” Lee replied.
“How old were you when you stayed with the Zorovaristani family?” Harri inquired.
“I don’t know maybe 4 or 5; I only stayed with them for about 6 months before I was sent to another orphanage. Once I started working for ONI I discovered or more appropriately rediscovered that I was familiar with Zorovari and then reacquainted myself with the language; you never know when it can come in handy. It’s very similar to a number of dialects spoken in this region and I speak three of them already so it wasn’t hard to bring up my proficiency. It’s funny in a way actually, I’m told I really didn’t start talking until I was about 5, after my stay in foster care; the staff at the orphanage thought I was mentally slow,” Lee explained with a chuckle.
Harri laughed at the irony of that statement. Lee was one of the most intelligent and capable individuals he had ever met. Still it seemed to be one more piece of the puzzle that was Lee Crane.

As part of their touring for the day Harri and Lee decided to take in the grand cathedrals in the city. One of the first countries to embrace Christianity, Zorovaristan had a long history with many beautiful churches scattered throughout the city of Zorovar. Walking into one of the older churches they were startled to find General Abassian’s body lying in state.
There appeared to be many senior government officials paying their last respects to the General which seemed non sequitur given his attempt to dispatch the heir to the throne. Harri tapped Lee on the shoulder and indicated that they should leave before they were noticed since it had been Lee who had killed the General. They didn’t need any awkward encounters right now.
“That is the last thing I expected to see,” Lee said.
“It definitely doesn’t make much sense. You would think he would be scorned and disavowed for having tried to kill the Prince yet it seems as though he is receiving full state honors.” As they walked back down the steps they watched a large limousine pull up and in front of the church and members of the royal guard got out to escort the occupants into the church. Not wishing to linger Harri and Lee moved quickly out of sight.
“Lee, let’s head over to FS-1 and get in touch with Tom Hardy to see if he’s come up with anything else on General Abassian or the potential heirs to the throne. This whole thing is just getting curiouser and curiouser by the moment.”
At the Admiral’s suggestions they went back to their car and headed for the local airport. Arriving at the airfield they entered the hangar where FS-1 was housed. Lee went to the aft hatch of FS-1 and quickly keyed in the security code allowing them entry to the little sub. Once inside Nelson moved over to the radio and established a connection with Admiral Hardy at ONI.
“Tom, Harri. Have you been able to turn anything up on Abassian or potential heirs to the throne?”
“We’ve got some information Harri, but we’re still looking. That’s a very tight community you’re in and its tough getting anyone to divulge much information. As far as the lines of succession, if the King’s children are unable to ascend the throne then his deceased brother’s son Barkev is next in line. Barkev is currently a Colonel in the Zorovaristan army. He attended West Point and graduated near the top of his class then returned to Zorovaristan to join the army. He is very highly regarded within the military and royal circles and has put together a very distinguished career rising rapidly through the ranks. From what we can tell the promotions were based on merit not family. He apparently chose to take the path Eshkan shunned.”
“Thanks Tom, try and push a little harder. While out visiting the various cathedrals here in Zorovar we ran into funeral proceedings that seemed to be honors afforded to a hero of the state for the good General. That’s not something I would have expected for a man who attempted to kill the next in line for the throne. We’re also pretty sure members of the royal family were attending the viewing,” Harri replied.
“I’ll get my people chasing down more leads. When are you departing the country?”
“We’ll most likely leave the day after tomorrow. Tomorrow we’re scheduled to meet with the King and receive his personal thanks for saving his son, then tour the city with Eshkan and finally finish it off with a state dinner hosted by the Prince to thank us for seeing him safely back home.”
“Okay, I’ll see what we can dig up by then. Talk to you later, Harri.” Hardy cut the connection.
Lee and Harri sat quietly regarding each other as they played over what they had seen. “I get the impression we’re due for a very big and nasty surprise before all of this is done Harri.”
“I concur Lee. There are things in play here that we can’t even guess at. It’s definitely an odd situation. Well let’s head on back to our chateau and kick back for the rest of the day. ”
~ ~ ~
The following morning Harri and Lee donned their dress blues for their meeting with the King. They met Prince Eshkan in the antechamber outside of the King’s bedroom and awaited admittance. Eshkan likewise was dressed in more formal attire for their meeting with his father.
“Good morning Harri, Lee. Did you have a good day yesterday,” Eshkan inquired.
“Yes we did,” Harri replied. “We spent a good part of the day touring the magnificent churches and cathedrals in the city. We’re both definitely looking forward to seeing Zorovar through your eyes today.”
“I’m excited about showing you the town myself; it’s been a while since I’ve been home.”
They all stood quietly waiting for admittance to the King’s chamber. Eshkan finally spoke. “I want to warn you that my father has been in failing health for quite some time now. There are days when he recognizes no one so if he begins to ramble please bear with him. Also he’s only been told that we were involved in a helicopter accident and not about the assassination attempt by General Abassian so as not to upset him.”
We understand, please don’t be concerned. We will follow your lead and only stay as long as you think appropriate,” Harri answered. They stood there quietly for another couple of minutes before the door opened and the King’s aide admitted them to the room.
Eshkan led the way into the room and approached his father. “Good morning Father, how are you feeling today?” Eshkan said to his father in Zorovari.
“I’m feeling somewhat better, thank you for asking son. How are you, have you recovered from your ‘accident’,” King Mardig inquired.
“Yes sir, I am quite well. Father, I would like to introduce the two gentlemen that are responsible for my safe return home. King Mardig of Zorovaristan may I present Admiral Harriman Nelson and Captain Lee Crane of the SSRN Seaview.”
“Your Majesty it is an honor to meet you,” the Admiral said. Lee quickly translated the Admiral’s words.
The king waved them forward, both men moved closer to the bedridden King. He stared closely at them and then suddenly pushed himself forward in the bed, his gaze fixed on Lee.
Focusing directly at Lee he spoke. “Antranig is that you son?” The King stared even harder at Lee. “Antranig my son where have you been, I’ve been so worried about you. You have been gone so long we’ve missed you.”
Lee shifted uncomfortably as did Eshkan. “I’m
sorry your Majesty,” Lee replied. “My
name is Lee Crane; I am Captain of the SSRN Seaview not your son Antranig. I am from
the United States, sir.”
“No, I would recognize my son anywhere, even without the beard. Why have you taken so long to come home? Your mother and I have missed you so much. It is about time you returned to take your rightful place.” A large smile played across the King’s face. His aides gaped slack jawed as they too finally noticed Lee’s resemblance to Eshkan. “There is so much to do and so little time. We must make preparations to welcome you home and for you to take over my kingdom,” the King continued.
Lee looked expectantly to Eshkan for some guidance with the situation. Eshkan looked on in shock and dismay at the King’s words to Lee. Lee turned to the Admiral and spoke quietly. “Sir he seems to think that I am his son Antranig and I can’t convince him otherwise. I’m not sure what I should do.”
The King became more agitated the longer they remained, convinced that Lee was his first born son Antranig. “Lee I think it would probably be a good idea if we excused ourselves and left the room to allow the Prince to explain your identity to his father.”
Lee moved over to the King’s chief aide. “We don’t want to upset the King any further,
if it is alright Admiral Nelson and I will excuse ourselves so the King can
rest.”
The aide continued to stare at Lee until it finally dawned on him that he had been asked a question. “Yes, yes of course that would probably be best.” At that Lee nodded to the Admiral and they bowed slightly and turned to exit the room.
As they moved to leave the room the King called loudly at them. “Antranig, where do you think you’re going you’ve only just arrived? You can’t leave me son, I have not dismissed you. Please son, come back and sit with me. We must talk; we have plans to make for your ascension to my throne.”
Finally stirred from his shock Eshkan moved to his father’s side to comfort him and explain Lee’s identity. “Father that is not Antranig, his name is Lee Crane and he commands a submarine for Admiral Nelson and his Marine Institute. He is not your son; he just bears a resemblance to him, to me.”
The King finally focused on Eshkan. “Don’t be silly Eshkan, I would recognize your brother anywhere. That is my son Antranig finally come home to assume the throne. The true and rightful heir has returned and you will not have to be ‘bothered’ with the affairs of state you so detest.” The King replied in distain.
Eshkan looked as though he had been slapped. His father’s words wounded him deeply and he could not hide the hurt from being so easily dismissed; deemed inappropriate and wanting.
Harri and Lee beat a hasty retreat from the King’s chambers. Lee was visibly shaken from the King’s assertion that he was the eldest son. “Oh god,” Lee commented softly, ”Poor Eshkan. That had to be a brutal experience, to have his father totally dismiss him.” Lee quickly translated what the King had said for Harri.
Harri stared inquisitively at Lee aware that he must have at some point in his life been exposed to a similar situation to so totally empathize with Eshkan. They waited in the antechamber until Eshkan joined them.
“I must apologize for that Harri, Lee. My father is not himself,” he said quietly.
“No apology necessary Eshkan,” Lee replied as he placed his hand on his shoulder. “That had to be incredibly difficult to endure. Are you okay?”
Eshkan looked up and met Lee’s eyes. He read the true sincerity of his concern in his gaze and took comfort in knowing at least someone cared about his feelings. “Yes thank you Lee, I’m fine.” Eshkan responded mentally shaking off the hurt of his father’s words. “Well gentlemen I promised you a personal tour of the city if you are still up for it.”
“Yes, we’re both excited to take your tour. We do however understand if you don’t feel up to it.” Harri answered.
“No, no, I insist that we head out and enjoy the day. As I said it’s been quite a while since I’ve been home and it will be good to reconnect with my country. Why don’t we all change into something more comfortable and we’ll head out to take in the sights.” With that Eshkan ordered his aide to have the car made ready and they headed out to play tourists.
Eshkan proved to be an excellent tour guide showing Harri and Lee aspects of Zorovar that they never would have happened on by themselves. They had a fantastic lunch at a small out of the way café, ambled through neighborhood open air markets and enjoyed a number of rounds at funky little pubs in one of the more modest sections of the city. It was heartening to see that Eshkan knew his city and his people and wasn’t afraid to be out among them.
As the afternoon waned they finally wrapped up the tour. Eshkan returned to the palace to rest up and get ready for the upcoming dinner and Harri and Lee were deposited at their chateau to make their own preparations.
~ ~ ~
The royal limousine arrived promptly at 1900 to collect Harri and Lee to deliver them to the palace for the gala affair. Both men were dressed in their formal Navy dress uniforms with the multiple miniature medals festooning the left side of their chest. They both appeared most impressive in their finery and cut quite dashing figures.
By the time they arrived most of the other guests had already assembled. It was a full-blown affair of state held in the grand ballroom. The Prince had pulled out all the stops making the dinner equal to any that would be hosted for a visiting head of state. It was a high fashion affair as all the women wore designer formal gowns and the men all had on white ties and tails or wore their finest military dress as appropriate. As they entered the foyer Harri and Lee were formally announced to the guests in the room below.
“Admiral Harriman Nelson, United States Navy, retired.”
“Commander Lee Benjamin Crane, United States Navy, reserve.”
The crowd immediately quieted as the Admiral and Captain descended the stairs into the ballroom below. Open stares, surprised looks and the occasional gasp met them as they moved forward to the reception line to greet Prince Eshkan and the royal family. Eshkan had chosen to shave his beard for the event to further shock those in attendance and to accentuate his resemblance to Lee Crane.
“Harri, Lee welcome,”Eshkan greeted them enthusiastically as he stepped forward and shook their hands. “It is my extreme pleasure to introduce you to my mother Queen Shahandukht, my cousin Colonel Barkev and his lovely wife Duchess Genera.” The royal party greeted them pleasantly and shook hands while they closely scrutinizing the Captain.
“I couldn’t quite believe how much everyone told me Eshkan and you resembled each other Captain,” the Queen said. “Now I see that those reports were an understatement. We’re you dressed alike I would be hard pressed to tell you apart.”
“Yes your Majesty it came as quite a shock to me as well. The last thing I expected was to meet my doppelganger.” Lee replied with a smile. Lee quickly translated the Queen’s comments for Harri so that he could keep up with the conversation.
Colonel Barkev stepped forward. “Did you attend the Naval Academy, Commander,” he inquired.
“Yes Colonel, the Admiral and I are both Academy grads.”
“Ah then we are friendly rivals gentlemen. I graduated from your West Point.” Barkev informed them.
“It’s unfortunate that Zorovaristan doesn’t have a navy, then you could have had a truly top notch education,” Lee said with a wink and smile.
Barkev laughed. “Well you have absolutely no excuse for your poor choice in academic institutions, or vocational selection gentlemen.” Both the Admiral and Lee laughed enjoying the light moment of service rivalry as they traded jibes with the Colonel. They chatted amiably with the Colonel and his wife for a while trading stories of Army/Navy rivalries and pranks pulled during their tenure’s at school.
After a few minutes Eshkan returned from taking care of some item of business and collected Harri and Lee. “I hope you are all rested up from our day on the town.” Eshkan said excitedly. “I think we will be partying well into the wee hours of the morning.” He smiled and then escorted them through the room introducing them to other key members of Zorovaristani government and society. As they completed the circuit of the room the gong was sounded calling the guests to dinner.
The dining room was immense with a number of large tables strategically placed throughout the room; the tables were set with an incredible array of fine china, silverware and crystal. The guests moved in at a leisurely pace finding their places and waited for the entrance of the royal family. Once everyone had claimed their place the Prince escorted his mother to her place at the head table and was quickly followed by the Colonel and his wife and the honored guests. As they took their seats, the rest of the assembled guests followed suit.
The wait staff then sprang into action and filled each person’s wine glass in anticipation of the Prince’s opening toast. When Eshkan noticed that the last glass had been filled he rose from his seat to address his guest.
“Your Majesty, nobles, ladies and gentlemen, tonight I have the distinct pleasure of honoring Admiral Harriman Nelson and Captain Lee Crane. They have been instrumental in ensuring my safe return to Zorovaristan. I especially wish to extend my sincerest thanks to Captain Crane who personally risked his life to protect mine when our helicopter crashed on our flight home. Captain you have my undying gratitude and you and Admiral Nelson will always be honored guests here in Zorovaristan. Welcome and salute.”
“Salute,” responded the guests. The Admiral and Captain acknowledged their host and nodded their thanks for the kind words.
“Well now that the formalities are out of the way let us all relax and enjoy this sumptuous feast.” Eshkan said after sipping his wine. With that the wait staff began entering the room with plates of appetizers and so began the feast. After 12 courses the meal was finally ended and everyone adjourned to the ballroom to dance and mingle.
Both the Admiral and especially Lee were sought out by the ladies for a spin on the dance floor. When not dancing they were quickly engaged in conversation by various groups of guests curious about their work with NIMR, Seaview and the remarkable resemblance Lee bore to the Prince.
By 0100 the men of Seaview were exhausted having been on the move non-stop since their arrival. Finally finding a moment when they could speak privately to each other they moved out onto the patio off the main ballroom.
“I don’t know about you Lee,” Harri said, “but I’ve reached my limit of fun and frivolity for the night. One more dance and I’m going to drop from exhaustion.”
Lee laughed softly. “I was there about 2 hours ago, sir. I think we’ve stayed long enough to be polite, don’t you? After all we do have to return to Seaview tomorrow and I would like to be able to keep my eyes open long enough to pilot us home.”
“I agree. Let’s go find our host and say our farewells. I’m sure they’re just waiting for us to leave so they can wind things down.” Harri replied. Spying the Prince across the room they moved smoothly through the crowd.
“Prince Eshkan, Lee and I wish to thank you for this most excellent evening. Given we are returning to Seaview tomorrow we need to head back to our quarters and catch a little sleep before we depart.” Harri said.
“Must you leave so soon,” Eshkan queried. “We are only getting started. A new band will be starting up after the next intermission and then we can get down and ‘boogie’,” he said with a wink.
“We’ve had a great time but I must admit I haven’t partied like this in a long time and I’m seriously out of practice,” Lee replied with a laugh. “I have to pilot tomorrow while he sleeps so I need to get a couple of hours of shuteye so I don’t dump us in the drink on the way home.”
“Of course, I understand. Would you do me the honor of having breakfast with me before you depart tomorrow? I would like very much to say good bye and send you on your way in a little more private venue. Say 9:00 a.m.”
“That would be fine, Eshkan we’ll see you for breakfast at 9.” Harri replied. Both Harri and Lee shook hands with Eshkan and made their way out to call their limousine and go back to their chateau.
~ ~ ~
Entering the main sitting room of their chateau Lee slogged to the nearest sofa, tugging off his jacket and untying his tie and flopped unceremoniously onto the furniture. He let out an exhausted and relieved sigh as his body began to relax. “Thank god that’s over. I don’t know about you Harri but I hate those grand dinners, I find them rather taxing.”
“Yes, I agree. I’m not the greatest social butterfly to begin with though for once I got off relatively easy. You got to be the darling of the dance,” Harri said with a laugh. Lee just glared at him then broke into a smile.
“I wish I had printed up cards with my life story on them so I could have handed them out. It would have saved me from repeating myself about a hundred times. I really wish Eshkan hadn’t shaved his beard it would have made our resemblance much less noticeable. I wonder what his rationale was for doing that tonight?”
“I have no idea. Maybe it was some sort of revolt following that scene with his father this morning. He does play the role of host exceedingly well though. With the right support team I think Eshkan would be more than adequate to take over after the King passes.”
“So did you stumble onto any insights into who might have wanted Eshkan out of the way,” Lee asked.
“No. I found it rather odd that no one even inquired about what occurred on the return trip. Maybe it would have been considered rude but I assumed it would be a topic of great interest.”
“Barkev seemed nice enough and seemed to actually like his cousin. I think Eshkan felt the same way. It will be interesting to see how that goes assuming Eshkan actually ascends to the throne.” Lee responded with a huge yawn.
“Well Harri I think I’m going to head off to bed or I’ll end up sleeping right here for the night.” Lee said as he slowly pushed himself up off the couch and stood stretching for a brief moment.
“That sounds like a very good suggestion, I’ll be right behind you. Sleep well son and see you in the morning.”
“Good night Dad. Don’t stay up too late,” Lee said as he moved off towards his room.
~ ~ ~
Harri flopped down on one of the couches and undid his tie and kicked off his shoes. He sat there going over the events of the evening. As expected Lee had become the focus of the crowd, even the Queen rarely took her eyes off of him the entire time she remained in the hall. The two times they had danced her eyes never strayed from Lee’s face as if looking for some sign that this man was in fact her missing son. He could only imagine the pain she must have felt losing one of her children. Harri felt he could relate after having thought Lee dead when he jumped from that cliff in Norway.
Colonel Barkev was another interesting study. A few years older than Lee he seemed the perfect candidate to take over after the King dies, but was he part of the plot to assassinate the Prince. Without more knowledge about his relationship with Eshkan and his personal feelings about his playboy cousin it was tough to draw any conclusions.
The King was yet another question in Harri’s mind. His reaction to Lee yesterday morning had been unsettling. He was soundly convinced that Lee was his missing son and left no doubt that he felt Eshkan came up wanting when it came to his potential for being the next king. Was the King really that mentally out of it or was it pretense on his part? Again without knowing the parties better it was tough to tell.
Then there was Lee. The revelation that he spoke Zorovari fluently was quite a surprise and knowing that he had learned the basics as a small child made it doubly so. Lee relayed an interesting fact that he had been slow to start talking as a child. That could be attributed to the fact that English may not have been his first language. He said only after he had lived with the Zorovaristani family did he begin speaking. Could it be that bridge between the two languages was what he needed to get him moving? He just didn’t know. But in the end did it really matter who Lee’s parents were? Lee had said more than once that he considered himself an American and would not take the throne if it turned out he were the rightful heir. With that last thought Harri yawned and pushed himself up off the couch and headed for bed.
~ ~ ~
Both Lee and Harri were up early the next morning anxious to be on their way back to Seaview. They had already packed their bags and taken them down to FS-1 so they would be able to head out immediately following breakfast with the Prince. As they sat in the kitchen sipping on a cup of coffee the front doorbell sounded.
Lee got up and went to the door with Harri following close behind. Cracking the door open Lee was surprised to see Eshkan standing there flanked by two guards. He looked extremely tired as though he hadn’t been to bed all night. Lee opened the door to admit the Prince.
“Eshkan please come in.” Lee said.
Eshkan entered but signaled his guards to remain where they were outside the door. “Harri, Lee please excuse the early call but I wanted to thank you again personally for all you have done for me and to wish you well on your journey. I’m unable to keep our breakfast date as my father passed away early this morning.”
“I’m truly sorry to hear that Eshkan, my sincere condolences.” Harri replied.
“Thank you Harri. This was not unexpected but it is still a shock. I was wondering Lee would it be possible to speak with you privately for a moment, I have something I need to ask you.”
“Of course Eshkan, come this way.” Lee answered leading Eshkan to the library located just off of the main sitting room. “I’m also sorry to hear about your father. If there’s anything I can do for you, please let me know.” Lee said as he shut the door.
“Thank you Lee I truly appreciate that. Lee, both my mother and father are completely convinced that you are their first born son and my brother Antranig. I’m honestly not sure how I feel about that, everything just seems so jumbled up and raw right now. What are your feelings about this Lee; do you think you may be their missing son and my brother?”
“Eshkan, understand that I in no way wish to offend you or your family, but I really don’t care and don’t have a need to know. My life is firmly rooted in the United States and I’m not willing to give that up for anything in the world. I have no overwhelming desire to find out conclusively if we are related as that would only cause problems for both you and me if it were proved to be so. What is it you need to know Eshkan?”
“From the personal standpoint I would love to know if my brother is still alive and well but not if that knowledge would hurt him. I would be immensely proud and happy to be able to call you brother, Lee. We both know that this question could quickly be resolved with a DNA test but like you I’m not sure I want to know the answer. I’m not thrilled with the prospect of taking over my father’s rule but that is what lies ahead of me. Listening to General Abassian and my father both basically tell me I have no business in the family business was a hard pill to swallow. If the DNA test were to show you are my brother then my problems would be solved, you would become the rightful heir and I could gladly step out of the picture. But by the same token I want to prove them and everyone else wrong and show that I am capable of effectively ruling Zorovaristan.”
“I would be honored as well to call you brother, were that the case. There’s a void in my life that would be nice to fill regarding my early history but I don’t want that at the price of potentially sacrificing what I have in the present. I spent too many years without a family and now that I have them I’m not willing to risk losing them. I won’t consent to a DNA test if that’s what you’re asking, I don’t need to know.” Lee said resolutely.
“Eshkan I think you are capable of doing whatever you set your mind to, you just need to make that decision. If ruling Zorovaristan is not something you think you can do then abdicate and leave it to the next in line. They have already tried to have you killed twice, if you don’t have the resolve to take on the responsibilities and obligations of the monarchy and carry them out to the best of your ability then don’t risk your life. Do what is best for your people and yourself. However if you truly feel that you have the desire and dedication to take up the throne and guide your country through what will no doubt be a difficult transition with the influx of outsiders developing your resources and the wealth that comes with that, then step up take the throne and show your people the way. That’s what I would consider if I were presented with the difficult choice you’ve just been handed.”
Eshkan stared quietly at Lee for a moment digesting what he had said. He stepped forward and suddenly drew him into a strong embrace which Lee returned after a startled moment. “Thank you Lee, that is the best advice I’ve ever been given. Whether we ever know conclusively if we are family I will always consider you my big brother,” he said with a laugh as he released him.
“I think I like that.” Lee laughed as well. “It will be good having a little brother to worry about.”
“Come now, I have to get back to the palace and take care of the affairs of state and you must return to your wonderful submarine,” Eshkan said as he moved to the door and opened it.
Stepping into the sitting area Eshkan moved over to Harri extending his hand. “Harri I must be on my way, there is much that I have to take care of. You and Lee are welcome anytime you wish to come back for a visit and I hope someday to visit you on Seaview once more. I again offer you my sincere thanks for all that you have done for me. Have a safe trip home and take care.”
“Eshkan, you too are always welcome on Seaview. I wish you the best of luck in your reign over Zorovaristan.” Harri replied.
“Lee, please keep in touch.” Eshkan said as he walked to the front door and opened it. “I can use all the advice you can give me.”
“Take care your Highness.” Lee responded with a smile. With that Eshkan waved good bye and closed the door behind him.
“Care to share what you talked about Lee?”
“He told me that both his parents felt that I am their missing son. He asked if I wanted to have the DNA testing done to determine conclusively if we are brothers. I told him that I didn’t need to know because it wouldn’t change where I choose to live or what I choose to do with my life. I said I wouldn’t risk my family for anything in this world. The rest is private, just between us.”
“I understand Son. I think it’s time for us to be on our way before anything else crops up don’t you?”
“I couldn’t agree more, Dad. Let’s get back to where we belong.”
Lee and Harri gathered up the rest of their belongings and headed back to the airport to claim FS-1 and return to Seaview. After watching them leave, hidden from view, Colonel Barkev entered the chateau and went up to the bedroom Lee had used. He walked over to the bed and carefully scanned the pillow until he spotted what he was after. Pulling out an envelope and tweezers, he carefully collected a couple of hairs from the pillow and exited the building.
~ ~ ~
Lee quickly conducted the pre-flight on FS-1 and had her warmed up and ready to fly. Once Harri had finished storing his gear he eased himself into the co-pilot’s seat and strapped himself in. “Ready when you are, son.”
Lee shot him one of his most brilliant smiles and radioed the control tower for runway clearance. Receiving that he taxied FS-1 onto the runway and sent her rapidly down the strip and up into the air. Once well on their way he contacted Seaview. “FS-1 to Seaview, FS-1 to Seaview do you read me.”
After a brief moment Seaview responded. “FS-1 this is Seaview we read you loud and clear. Good to hear your voice Skipper.”
“Thanks Sparks. Just wanted to let you know that we’re on our way back.” Lee responded.
“That’s good to hear Lee,”came Chip’s voice in response.
“Chip! Good to hear your voice. How did you escape Sick Bay already,” Lee inquired with a laugh.
“Shhhh, not so loud,” Chip replied. “Jamie has no idea I’m out and about.”
“Somehow I doubt that Chip. How are you feeling?” Lee replied.
“Not too bad actually. The shoulder is a little sore and I’ve got a bit of a headache but I guess that’s to be expected and what I deserve for trying to keep you out of trouble.”
“Me?! Hah! I had everything under control until you opened your mouth,” Lee shot back playfully.
“So bullseye on your chest is under control is it? No wonder you come back damaged every time you go off boat without a sitter,” Chip bandied back. By now Harri was laughing out loud as was many of the control room crew.
“Harrumph,” Lee responded trying hard to keep his laughter under control. “We’re headed back your way Chip, shoot us a homing signal okay.”
“Gotcha Skipper, one homing signal coming up.”
Lee quickly locked in the coordinates and engaged the autopilot. “We’ll see you in approximately… 90 minutes Chip. Leave a light on in the window.”
“We have a lock on you Lee. Oh, Admiral Nelson, Admiral Hardy has called requesting you contact him ASAP.” Chip replied.
“Thank you Chip,” Nelson answered. “I’ll contact him from here. See you soon, FS-1 out.”
Harri tuned his radio to Hardy’s personal signal and initiated the call. “Hardy,” came the answer.
“Tom, its Harri. I had a message to contact you ASAP.”
“Hi Harri. Yes, we finally came up with some rather startling information out of Zorovaristan. ” Hardy stated.
“Go ahead Tom, we’re all ears.”
“We finally hit the mother lode of information in Zorovaristan. I hope you’re sitting down because the revelations are rather astounding and this story has more twists than an Agatha Christie novel. This all starts with the kidnapping. The deposed royal family was never fans of the Soviet regime and wanted to ensure that the heirs to the throne were kept out of the Soviet ‘education’ system so they arranged to have their sons kidnapped and spirited out of the country. As we are all aware the kidnapping plot was only partially successful and the ‘kidnappers’ were only able to capture the oldest son Antranig. The rest of the plot was foiled by a Soviet spy embedded within the royal household.”
“The oldest boy was transported to the U.S. and was supposed to live with Zorovaristani ex-patriots to be raised and educated in an open society. Shortly after the boy and his couriers arrived in the U.S. all contact with them was lost. Our source in Zorovaristan said that no one ever heard from them again so they have no idea what ultimately became of the child. After the loss of one son the King and Queen lavished attention on their youngest and essentially turned him into an overindulged brat who refused to follow the wishes of his parents, especially once the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991 and Zorovaristan once again became a sovereign nation with the royal family returned to power.”
“According to our source the King and Queen tried to pressure the youngest son into joining the army and learn to fulfill the obligations that the heir would be required to undertake to rule the country when he ascended to the throne. Prince Eshkan balked and instead opted for a general education at Harvard instead of one of the military academies and refused to join the Zorovaristani military upon graduation. He basically skated through school, and from all sources he was lucky to graduate. He was more interested in partying than studying and there is a general consensus that his exams were taken by someone else so he could graduate with his class. His failure to return to Zorovaristan and take his place with the army created a huge rift between the King and his son.”
“This is where it gets disturbing. The King was exceedingly disappointed with Eshkan but he found that his nephew, Barkev was exactly what he envisioned his heir to be. To ensure that Zorovaristan was given a leader that had the education, discipline and dedication to the country it needed to survive and prosper the King sanctioned the assassination of his son Eshkan to insure that Barkev ascended the throne once he died.”
“As we suspected General Abassian had been assigned as Eshkan’s mentor to see if he could instill a sense of duty and obligation to the nation that the Prince needed to be king. In failing to do that Abassian was given the authority to order the hit on Eshkan if he deemed it necessary to prevent the Prince from taking the throne. Our source indicated that this entire plot was limited to a very select and high level group of Zorovaristani officials which did not include Colonel Barkev the next in succession to the throne. This was a very intentional exclusion to keep the taint of scandal off the Colonel should any of this become public.”
“So when the gunman in the US and then General Abassian and his pilots took steps to eliminate Prince Eshkan they were under orders from King Mardig and were performing a service for the state. That’s undoubtedly why the General was afforded a hero’s burial when his remains were returned to Zorovaristan. As you are well aware the would-be assassin’s names were never disclosed to the public. Apparently the King found some virtues from the period of Soviet occupation, those being complete control over the flow of certain information to the populace.”
Harri and Lee stared at each other in amazement as they listened to machinations initiated against their former charge, Prince Eshkan. “Well that definitely explains a lot,” Harri finally remarked. “Tom are you aware that the King passed away this morning?”
“No Harri that’s news to me and probably the rest of the world.”
“According to Eshkan, King Mardig passed away sometime during the early hours this morning. He stopped by our chateau to inform us of the King’s death and he also spoke privately with Lee,” Harri replied.
“What was it he spoke to you about, Commander,” Hardy inquired.
“He relayed that his parents seemed to feel that I was their first born son and he offered me the opportunity to have our DNA tested to determine if that was the case. I told him I had no desire to know the answer to that question and even if it was proven that he and I were brothers I would never step forward to claim the throne.” Lee replied quietly. “Admiral can you reveal who your source of all this information is?”
“Sorry Commander, the information was provided with the understanding that the individual’s identity remains unknown. I can tell you it’s someone very high and well ingrained in the palace crowd,” Hardy answered.
“Tom, thanks for all the work you and your people went through to give us this information. I’ll give you a call in a couple of days and give you a complete debrief on everything we know from our end,” Harri interjected.
“You’re welcome Harri, I’ll talk to you soon.” Hardy hung up ending the connection.
Harri and Lee sat in silence running over the information Hardy had provided them. Lee had totally called it when he guessed there was an insidious revelation hiding in all of the recent events associated with Prince Eshkan.
“Geez, Harri do we tell Eshkan or not? Do you think he is still at risk now that he is within steps of taking the throne?”
“I just don’t know, Lee. How would you like to learn that your father was so disappointed in you and thought you so incapable of taking over for him that he sanctioned your assassination and then afforded your would-be assassin a state funeral in recognition of services provided to the state?” Harri replied.
“Eshkan is fully aware of his father’s disappointment in him. It was a bitter pill to swallow but I think he was given quite a wakeup call and he is astute enough to evaluate what he really wants in life and if that includes ruling Zorovaristan or not. If he decides to step aside then he should be safe. If however he decides to go forward and ascends the throne his safety will ultimately depend on his dedication to the nation and the well-being of its people,” Lee offered. “I think if he falters we should give him the information we have so he is aware of the source of the threats against him and then he can either abdicate or take actions to improve his rule.”
Harri stared in admiration at his son. Lee would have made an exceptional king and would have led Zorovaristan forward while ensuring its people were properly taken care of in the face of the changes descending on the small nation. He was personally thrilled that Lee had declined the DNA test to determine if he were in line for the throne. He realized it was selfish but he wanted Lee to remain his son and to step forward to rule his small kingdom when the time came. Harri reached across and placed his hand on Lee’s shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Lee looked over and graced Harri with a warm and knowing smile. They were a family, the very best kind, one forged out of mutual respect and unconditional love.
The End.
