Voice of Reason: Essays in Objectivist Thought

SEPARATION OF SCHOOL AND STATE

What's wrong with our children today? Why can't they read? Why are they killing one another? Why can't they think for themselves? Perhaps the public education system has something to do with it. At birth a child's mind is empty, as a child grows and develops so does his mind. For the first four years of a child's life it is the parents responsibility to assist the child in developing his mind. Hopefully showing the child that he is an individual, that he can think and make decisions for himself. Allowing him to develop his own set of values,deciding the difference between good and evil, by means of the physical sensations of pleasure and pain. A child making a good decision will get a pleasurable sensation, a child making an evil decision would get a painful sensation.

After a child's fourth year the government has decided that it should take over the responsibility of developing a child's mind for them.Is this not a loss of freedom? The very foundation that this country was built on. The government says that a child must go to school. For the parents who can't afford to send their children to private schools, or don't have time to home school, they must send their children to public school, or face going to jail and having the state take possession of their children. At this time I must send my children to public school for the reasons stated above.

Todays public schools are turning out more illiterate graduates than ever before, they are also turning out more criminals. Why is this? Maybe it is because they are taking the minds away from our children. Instead of teaching them to read and write about the true history of man, math and science, they are teaching them,

1.To know their place and stay there;
2.To learn to turn themselves on and off like a light switch;
3.To become indifferent to everything;
4.To surrender their will over to a predetermined chain of command;
5.To depend on others to tell them what they should learn and what they should be interested in;
6.To depend on others to tell them what they are worth,and;
7.To learn that they are being watched constantly.

When I first read these ideas by John Taylor Gatto, I began to see more and more of the truth, and I wandered why public schools don't teach the real meaning of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. After reading a few more essays I began to realize that the government is trying to change civilization as we know it, and they are starting with our children. They are training them to be good citizens in the worst term, docile, even more than they did with me.

I still have determination to be free, to be myself to be an individual, to respect myself and others. This is also what I want for my children. I feel I must do whatever it takes to get my children out of schools that require them to carry see through bookbags because they are afraid that my children might bring a weapon to school. This tells me that they don't trust children that they have not yet met, Is this not conviction without a crime, guilty until proven innocent. The public schools are starting to dictate what kind of clothes a child can wear, attempting to make all of the children equal, something they are not. Some families can afford expensive clothing for their children, some can not this is a fact of life. Are the public schools trying to change the facts?

Facts are facts and the fact is, it does not matter what a child wears to school, as long as they learn that A IS A .
