AN ODE TO MY FIRST BEST DOGGIE
HEAVEN'S DOGGY DOOR
By
Jan Cooper 1995
My best friend closed his eyes last night,
As his head was in my hand.
The Doctors said he was in pain,
And it was hard for him to stand.
The thoughts that scurried through my head,
As I cradled him in my arms.
Were of his younger, puppy years,
And Oh...his many charms.
Today, there was no gentle nudge
With an intense " I love you gaze",
Only a heart that's filled with tears
Remembering our joy filled days.
But an Angel just appeared to me,
And He said, "You should cry no more,
God also loves our canine friends,
He's installed a "doggy door"!!!
Thanks Jan for writing this; I feel with you and it fits me too.

He was a show quality cocker who had a genetic eye defect and an underbite...As if I would care??? He was my sweetheart from day
one... One day, just before Christmas, I came in to find him waiting at the door for me, but he couldn't come to me... He tried and tried, but couldn't make his back legs move. That's the day, that I met the best vet and one that I love for his compassion and his skill... He tried all he could, including surgery, but there is nothing that can be done for a degenerating spinal cord...
On December 23, 1987, the decision taken from my hands but made nonetheless, he crossed the rainbow bridge to once again roam and play...
Here's a little story...
I lived in a 2 story apartment during Taber's early years. When I
wanted him to go outside or come to me and HE didnt want to, he would go to the stairs, run up and stand on the upstairs landing with tail wagging and dare me to come get him... When I'd finally have enough and go up the stairs to get him, he would run down the stairs and sit on the downstairs landing looking up at me as if to say
"na na, na-na-na, you cant get me. "
This would go on for 3-4 times until He was ready and I was huffing and puffing.
It was a little ritual for him....and me...
Taber, I know that you sent me Tray to keep me company in this life... He even has the diamond-shaped set of spots in exactly the same place as your back problem to prove it... And to him, you have sent Tosh and Tessie my way because you wouldn't want Tray to grow up lonely...
Destiny is a wonderful thing! I'm glad you were here in my life and I miss you, pup! But I'll be seeing you...
