SLEEP DISORDERS: WHAT TO DO WHEN A FRIEND OR LOVED ONE IS IN DENIAL.

IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A SPOUSE, FRIEND, FAMILY MEMBER OR CO-WORKER--

PERHAPS BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO SLEEPY, SNORE HORRIBLY
OR STOP BREATHING IN SLEEP--AND IF THEY DON'T SEEM TO BE LISTENING TO YOU--

IF IN FACT, THEY SEEM TO BE SHUTTING YOU OUT!...

IT'S NOT A SURPRISING OR UNCOMMON DILEMMA.
BUT IT MAY BE A SERIOUS ONE.

  • It is remarkably easy for many people to ignore their sleep disorders--even if severe to the point of being life-threatening--for several reasons.

-PEOPLE CANNOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM WHILE THEY SLEEP.

-FURTHERMORE, MOST SLEEPY INDIVIDUALS SIMPLY DO NOT SENSE THEIR IMPAIRMENT OR UNDERESTIMATE ITS SEVERITY.

    • THIS IS THE REASON WHY SLEEP-RELATED HIGHWAY CRASHES ARE PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS. IN SUCH TRAGIC EVENTS, THE IMPAIRED DRIVER TYPICALLY NEVER FELT SLEEP COMING AND MADE NO ATTEMPT TO BRAKE.

  • So--what can you do to try to help convince them--and perhaps protect their life and health? Consider the following possible steps:

-Provide them with information from this website, from our Center, or from other sources.

-Encourage them to take the brief self-test in this website.

-Share with them the results of your responses to the observer questionnaire in this website.

-Share with them the case vignette on Sleep Apnea: Impact on Life and Family. Sleep apnea afflicts not just the individual with the disorder, but family members and others close to that individual as well.

-If they consent to such, make a videotape of alarming events that are occurring while they sleep--or, if severe snoring with pauses in breathing are the primary concern, an audio cassette recording may suffice.

-Do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance. All too many people with serious sleep disorders never get help--and consequently suffer complications that could have been prevented.
