Scott McAdoo's Wrestling History - I

How It All Began:

In his first year, as a member of the Calvert Cougars in the Southern Maryland Junior League... Scott posted a record of only 8-7 but he came on strong at the end of the season and placed 2nd in the Maryland State Age/Weight Tournament. Right from the beginning, Scott showed a real knack for the sport. Realizing this, his family decided to send him to four wrestling camps during the summer of 95 in an attempt to kick his progress into high gear... it worked!

In 1995-96, as a freshman at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick, MD... Scott was a member of the junior varsity and posted a 14-4 junior varisty record. He also filled in on the varsity a few times and ended with a 1-2 record.

Following the high school season, Scott became a member of one of the best wrestling clubs in the country: The Southern Maryland Wrestling Club, operated by Dr. Bruce Gabrielson. Scott began attending the club two times a week despite the 70 mile round trip. That summer, Scott attended three more camps: Ken Chertow's Two Week Super Gold Medal Camp, Wade Schalles' Eaglehawk Academy and the Calvert High School Summer Wrestling Camp. It was at Eaglehawk that Scott's potential was first recognized by someone who really knew what to look for. Wade Schalles provided Scott's father with the name of a local wrestler who he thought might be interested in becoming Scott's personal trainer. Mike Fitzgerald, a former two time NCAA All-American, was contacted and an interview was arranged. Mike immediately recognized Scott's potential and arrangements were made for Scott to visit and train with Mike, 60 miles away, as often as possible.

During the 96-97 school year, as a sophomore, Scott was a full time member of the varsity and ended the season with a 25-15 record. The season started with Scott placing 3rd out of an 18 team field in his first high school varsity tournament. It ended by him placing 4th in the prestigious Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Tournament, 4th in the Maryland 3A/4A South Regional Tournament and then finishing in the top 8 in the state at the Maryland 3A/4A State High School Championships.

Picking Up The Pace:

The spring, summer and fall of 1997 have been his busiest yet. Scott attended the inaugural Danny Hodge World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada during March. He finished in the top 16 of his age/weight class out of over 70 entries. He also immediately returned to his busy schedule of attending Calvert High School's post-season wrestling practice on Mondays and Wednesdays and then Southern Maryland Wrestling Club practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is there that Scott has had the good fortune of working personally with Wade Hughs, Buddy Lee, Jim Jordan, Troy Sunderland and other famous wrestlers. He also returned to his training sessions with his private coach on as many weekends as possible.

Scott attended every post-season tournament that could be found within a 200 mile radius. This included tournaments in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. Mostly, it was all Folkstyle at first, but it was decided very quickly that Scott should spread his wings to include Freestyle and Greco-Roman also. Scott placed 2nd in his first Freestyle tournment, going 4-1 at a spring tournament conducted at the U.S. Naval Academy. Among other tournaments, Scott particpated in the East Coast Club Championships and had a great showing with his 3rd place finish. A visiting Russian traveling team was in attendance and Scott had an amazing match against the current Russian Cadet National Runner-up, losing by only one point: 13-12.

He really took to Greco-Roman wrestling and within weeks, Scott had won the 1997 Maryland State Cadet Greco-Roman Championship. He also placed 3rd at the Maryland State Cadet Freestyle Championships. As a result, Scott was selected as a member of both the Maryland Cadet Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Teams for 1997.

At the end of June, Scott attended the University of Iowa's Two Week Training Camp at Iowa City, Iowa. He then stayed over and attended the one week Iowa Technique Camp. This was a great experience for him as he got to work with and learn from many current and former national and world champions. This included Dan Gable, Tom and Terry Brands, Royce Alger, Jim Zaleski, Lincoln McIlravy and most of the other members of the 1997 Hawkeye NCAA championship team. He also had the opportunity to test himself against some of the outstanding wrestlers that attended the camps from other parts of the country.

Upon returning from Iowa, Scott immediately attended the Maryland National Team Training Camp (making four weeks of camp in a row). This camp was run by J.R. Plienis, a former high school national champion from Maryland and current member of the Nebraska Corn Huskers Wrestling Team. Of course, there were numerous other experienced coaches from the local area also involved.

Although, Scott missed the USA Northeast Cadet Regionals due to an injury... he still attended the 1997 USA Cadet Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota as a member of the Maryland National Team. He won his first four matches in Greco-Roman before losing his last two and finishing in the top 16 in the country. He didn't fare as well in Freestyle but he did have a great match against Ryan Kane from California, a 1997 Cadet Greco-Roman All-American and Cadet World Team Trials finalist.
