South Region Tournament Summary

Runner-up - Jermaine Barnes (130 Pounds - Senior):

Jermaine came into the tournament as the #3 seed with a record of 21-4. He dominated his early matches by scoring a technical fall over his first opponent, Jason Fish from Thomas Stone, and then pinning his semi-final opponent, Donald Stuckey from Duval, in 5:20 while leading 22-10.

Jermaine's finals match was against the #1 seed, Gari Miller from Frederick Douglas. Jermaine was taken down and put on his back in the first period to go down 5-0 early. But he fought back and took the lead by a score of 6-5 with only 40 seconds left in the match. Unfortunately, in his efforts to add to his lead, Jermaine was put to his back again and ended up losing the match 11-7. He now heads to the state tournament as the #2 seed from the south with a 23-5 record.

Runner-up - Scott McAdoo (152 Pounds - Junior):

Scott was the #1 seed in his weight class and came into the tournament with a 29-4 record. His first match saw him wrestling Dominic Scali from Northern, again, and winning by the score of 11-0. He then wrestled the #4 seed, Ryan Scott from Oxon Hill, in the semi-finals. Scott was leading 12-0 in the second period when the referee slapped the mat for Scott's thirteenth pin of the year.

As with the SMAC finals, Scott's region finals match was a rematch with an opponent from earlier in the year. This time, however, it was against someone that had defeated him, Matt Smith from Westlake. Smith, the #3 seed, was the 160 pound SMAC champion and had come down to 152 for the region tournament. Scott wrestled cautiously in the first period which ended still deadlocked at 0-0. Scott chose down for the second period and escaped with only 6 seconds left to take the lead 1-0. Smith then took down for the third period but Scott was able to lock him up in a cradle and score 3 back points and increase his lead to 4-0. But Smith managed to break out of the cradle and escape to make it 4-1 with about a minute left in the match. Feeling confident, Scott went after him with a beautiful high crotch that he then switched off to a double leg takedown as he lifted Smith onto his shoulder. And that is when disaster struck. Smith locked onto Scott tightly and, as Scott attempted to dump him down to the mat, a momentum was created by their combined body weight that Scott could not slow down. Smith hit the mat hard, flat on his back, with Scott's shoulder in his chest and he did not get up. Scott was called for an illegal slam and was disqualified when Smith could not continue. In fact, the tournament was held up for 20-30 minutes as Smith was attended to and subsequently taken to the hospital. (Note: Thankfully, it turned out that he was not seriously hurt.) Scott will now take his 31-5 record into the state tournament as the #2 seed from the south.

Runner-up - Paul Sheran (189 Pounds - Junior):

Paul came into the tournament as the #3 seed with a record of 21-9. He won his first match, over Tevick Skinner from Frederick Douglas, by a major decision score of 13-4. His semi-finals match was against the #2 seed, David Dory from Duval. This exciting match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and went into overtime but not before an unusual twist. During the third period, Paul ended up having pieces of two of his teeth knocked out. While this frustrated Paul, it also angered him and led him to being the aggressor in the overtime period. Paul used that aggression to score first and win 3-1 in the overtime period. Immediately after the match, Paul was taken from the building by his parents for emergency dental care.

Paul's finals match was against #1 seed Ricardo Walker from Laurel. Unfortunately, do to his injury in his semi-final match, Paul was unable to wrestle and ended up second in the region due to an injury default. He now heads into the state tournament as the #2 seed from the south with a 23-10 record.

Others:

Junior Jason Poore (140 pounds) came into the tournament as the #2 seed but lost a tough 7-6 decision to eventual champion, Ivan Hardnett from Gwynn Park, in the semi-finals. Jason came back and finished like a champion taking third with a pin at 1:43 of the consolation finals over Thomas Yates from Great Mills. Jason, who finished sixth in the state tourmanent last year, will now make his second trip as the south #3 seed with a 31-6 record.

Sophomore Buck Sampson (112) was the surprise of the tournament when he finished in third place. Coming in as the #7 seed, his first match was against the #2 seed Mike Reynolds from Laurel. Buck lost this match by the score of 13-1 but he came back to win three in a row including the consolation finals over Bobby Jameson from Thomas Stone by the score of 3-1. Buck will now make his first visit to the state tournament as the south #3 seed.

Two other Calvert wrestlers placed when juniors Matt Fletcher (103) and Blaire Surgent (125) both finished fifth.
