1997/98 Season Summary

Updated - 03/08/98

Dual Meets:

The 1997/98 dual meet season has come to a close and all that is left now are the individual tournaments. This years team has accomplished something no other Calvert team before ever had... win the 3A/4A South Region Dual Meet Championship.

There were some rough times along the way as our regular season record of 11-3 was established. But, in the end, this team came together when it was most needed. Following a tough loss to Thomas Stone High School, a string of seven victories was rattled off including a regular season ending thriller against our long time county rivals Northern High School. With that victory, the team earned a berth in the South Region Dual Meet competition as the #4 seed.

Being the #4 seed required Calvert to go against the #1 seed, Duval High School of Prince George's County, on their home mat. Duval had a 13-1 record and a P.G. County championship under their belt going in but a solid performance all the way through the line-up obtained a victory for the Cavaliers. The finals saw Calvert once again head-to-head with Northern, who at 13-2, had also won their semi-final meet over Gwynn Park of P.G. County. With their recent loss to Calvert still fresh in their minds, Northern was determined not to let victory slip away the second time around. But Calvert prevailed once again, winning 38-29, and with a record of 13-3, the Cavaliers traveled to Frederick High School on February 14th to participate in the 3A/4A State Dual Meet Championships. They went in as the #4 seed and had to face powerful Old Mill, the #1 seed, in the semi-final meet. Calvert made a good showing of their first trip to this prestigious event but came up on the short end by a score of 37-29. Old Mill went on to the finals and, ultimately, won the championship. But Calvert still went home a winner... secure in the knowledge that they will return. And next year, it will be to take the team trophy home with them.

All that remains now are the individual tournaments. The team has a good chance to win the SMAC tournament for their first time and an excellent opportunity to repeat as the South Region champions. Even the state tournament holds considerable promise for this team has they should easily improve on their 12th place showing of last year.

Good luck to all the varsity members as they prepare themselves to pursue their individual glory. It's been a great year for the team and now each of them has their own chance to add to the building legacy of the Calvert Cavaliers.

SMAC Tournament - February 20-21, 1998:

The Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) Championships were held at Thomas Stone High School in Waldorf, MD on 02/20-21. The Cavaliers finished tied for fourth place with 150.5 points and had four champions, two third place finishers and two sixth place finishers. The four champions were, by far, a first for the school as only seven wrestlers in the history of Cavalier wrestling had ever won this tournament. This time it was four for four in the finals. Senior Jermaine Barnes (130) was joined by juniors Jason Poore (140), Scott McAdoo (152) and Paul Sheran (189) as champions. Juniors Matt Fletcher (103) and Blaire Surgent (125) both finished third while sophomore Buck Sampson (112) and freshman Dustin Little (119) finished sixth. 3A/4A South Region Tournament - February 27-28, 1998:

The Maryland 3A/4A South Region Championship was held at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD on 02/27-28. The Cavaliers captured their second consecutive team title by scoring 113 team points. All seven Calvert wrestlers that attended the event placed with senior Jermaine Barnes (130), junior Scott McAdoo (152) and junior Paul Sheran (189) finishing in second place. Junior Jason Poore (140) and sophomore Buck Sampson (112) finished third and juniors Matt Fletcher (103) and Blaire Surgent (125) finished fifth. With the top four finishers in each weight class qualifying for the state tournament, Calvert is sending five wrestlers on to the big dance. Congratulations guys! 3A/4A State Tournament - March 6-7, 1998:

The Maryland 3A/4A State Championship was held at Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD on 03/06-07. Out of sixty-eight teams that sent wrestlers to the tournament Calvert placed seventh with 43 team points. This was a significant improvement over last years finish and was, by far, the best the school has ever done.

The team was led by junior Jason Poore (140) who finished fifth. Senior Jermaine Barnes (130) and juniors Scott McAdoo (152) and Paul Sheran (189) each finished sixth. Sophomore Buck Sampson (112) did not place but had a great season. Congratulations to all! (Click here to read a summary of the 3A/4A State Tournament.)
