SMAC Tournament Summary
Champion - Jermaine Barnes (130 Pounds - Senior):
Jermaine wrestled in what many agree was the toughest weight class of the tournament - 130 pounds. Jermaine came into the tournament as the #4 seed with a record of 18-4. After a quarter-final pin of Marcello Nucci from Northern in 3:12, Jermaine then met the #1 seed... Mike Mehl from McDonough in the semi-finals. It was a close match with Jermaine securing his place in the finals by a score of 4-3.
The finals was a rematch with Casey Fitzpatrick (25-3) from Thomas Stone. Fitzpatrick had defeated Jermaine soundly in the dual meet matchup earlier in the season but Jermaine was determined not to let his SMAC title get away from him. A close victory of 6-5 insured Jermaine's place in history.
An interesting note about Jermaine's accomplishment... both Mehl and Fitzpatrick were defending 1997 SMAC champions.
Champion - Jason Poore (140 Pounds - Junior):
Jason came into the tournament as the #1 seed with a record of 24-5. In the quarter-final round he pinned Chris Bowling from LaPlata in 2:38. His semi-final matchup was a 10-4 victory over Tony Antonioli from St. Mary's Ryken.
Jason then wrestled Stephen Kaminski (23-6) from Chopticon in the finals. Jason got the only takedown of the match and led 2-1 at the end of the first period. Neither wrestler was able to gain any advantage in the second period as Jason rode Kaminski the entire time. Jason scored an escape in the third period making the final score 3-1 and, with that, Calvert now had it's second SMAC champion for 1998.
Champion - Scott McAdoo (152 Pounds - Junior):
Scott was also the #1 seed in his weight class coming into the tournament with a 26-4 record. In his first match, Scott pinned Bo Howery from Patuxent in 2:39 after building up a 12-0 lead. He then wrestled Dominc Scali from Northern in the semi-finals and recorded an 18-2 technical fall.
Scott's finals match was also a rematch... with Chuck Carrington (22-5) from McDonough. The two had wrestled twice before with Scott winning both bouts. This time, however, Carrington was looking to change all that. The match remained scoreless until late in the second period when Scott scored a reversal and two back points to take a lead of 4-0. A stalling call made against Scott in the final seconds of the third period resulted in a final score of 4-1. Calvert was now three for three in the finals with one to go.
Champion - Paul Sheran (189 Pounds - Junior):
Paul came into the tournament as the 189 pound #3 seed with a record of 18-9. Paul's first match saw him pinning Raheem Archer from LaPlata in 1:28 of the first period. His semi-finals match was against the #2 seed, Chip Williams from Chopticon. Paul dominated this match with a score of 26-13.
Paul's finals match was against #1 seed Zac Cox (26-2) from McDonough. Paul took an early lead of 5-0 and then hung on to win a wild one by the score of 8-7 thus concluding a perfect night by the finalists from Calvert High School.
Others:
Junior Matt Fletcher (103) lost a tough 13-9 decision to eventual finalist B.J. Treadway from McDonough in the quarter-finals. But Matt then won four matches in a row, including the consolation finals over Jeremy Harpold from Thomas Stone by the score of 10-3 to take third place.
Junior Blaire Surgent (125) came into the tournament as the #2 seed. Blaire started off with a pin in 1:44 over Ben Grantonic from West Lake. However, Blaire lost his semi-final match to #3 seed, and eventual champion, Jacob Kirby (30-4) from Lackey by the score of 8-1. Dropping into the consolation bracket, Blaire went two for two to capture third place by defeating Eric MacFarlane from Thomas Stone 6-1 in the consolation finals.
Two other Calvert wrestlers placed when sophomore Buck Sampson (112) and freshman Dustin Little (119) both placed sixth.
