SMAC Tournament Summary

Champion - Justin Brittain (103 Pounds - Sophomore):

Justin came into the tournament as the #1 seed. He won all three of his matches, including the championship final, by pin. In fact, his total time on the mat for the entire tournament was only four minutes and eleven seconds. He may have set a record for the fastest championship final when he pinned unseeded Ryan Turner of McDonough in only 0:26 seconds! His three pins brought his total for the year to 20 which ties the old record held by Blaire Surgent (note: Scott McAdoo broke the record and set the new mark at 21 during this same tournament).

Champion - Blaire Surgent (135 Pounds - Senior):

Blaire came into the tournament as the #3 seed despite his record of 25-1 (Blaire was 10-1 in conference dual meets while the #1 and #2 seeds were undefeated). He defeated the #2 seed, Justin Derr of Patuxent, in the semi-finals by the score of 12-4. He then defeated the #1 seed, Garret Black of Chopticon, in the finals by the score of 3-1. This was the fourth time that Blaire and Black have wrestled this year. Blaire won the first two but Black had won the last one (Blaire's only loss of the year). Blaire came in ranked #4 in the state by the MSWA while Black was ranked #6.

Blaire's four years of hard work paid off with his first SMAC title. And in doing so, he joined his brother Ahren as the second pair of brothers to win SMAC titles for Calvert.

Champion - Jason Poore (140 Pounds - Senior):

Jason came into the tournament as the #1 seed with a record of 26-1. Ironically, he had an easier time in the semi-finals (pin at 5:13) and the finals (21-8 major decision) than he did in his first match. Following an opening round bye, unseeded Marcello Nucci from Northern took Jason to overtime in the quarter-final round. Jason scored a takedown in the first minute of overtime to win 5-3.

Jason pinned the #4 seed, Andrew Swearinger from Thomas Stone, in the semi-finals and then scored big over the #4 seed, Damond Ballard from Leonardtown, in the finals, 21-8. Jason is currently ranked #3 in the state by the MSWA and with this tournament win, Jason became only the second Cavalier to ever win two SMAC titles (the first was his brother Shawn).

Champion - Scott McAdoo (160 Pounds - Senior):

Scott was also the #1 seed in his weight class coming into the tournament with a 27-1 record. Unlike the others, Scott did not have a first round bye. He pinned Josh Olson of Great Mills in his first match and then pinned Jason Butler of Chopticon in the quarter-finals. His semi-final match was a 12-4 major decision over the #4 seed, Robert Pepper of Thomas Stone. In the finals, Scott defeated the #2 seed, David Young of LaPlata, by the score of 6-1. Young came into the match with a record of 26-2 (both of his two losses had been to Scott) and was ranked #5 in the state by the MSWA. However, the third time was not a charm for Young, as Scott scored two takedowns and a reversal to Young's one escape and he racked up four and a half minutes of riding time too.

Scott is currently ranked #4 in the state by the MSWA. He set a team record for pins in the season when he got number twenty and then number twenty-one during this tournament. He joins Shawn and Jason Poore as Calvert's third wrestler to win two SMAC titles. His record is now 31-1 and he has won 29 in a row.

Champion - Paul Sheran (189 Pounds - Senior):

Paul came into the tournament as the 189 pound #1 seed with a record of 15-0. After receiving a first round forfeit, Paul pinned both his quarter-final and semi-final opponents. His finals match was against the #2 seed, Sean O'Conner from Patuxent. This was a rematch of a hard fought dual meet match-up which Paul won but not without some pain. It was during their previous match-up that Paul injured his knee which caused him to miss two tournaments and numerous dual meets. This time there was no injury but it was still a close one with Paul winning by the score of 3-2.

Paul is now 19-0 and Calvert's only undefeated wrestler. He is currently ranked #6 in the state by the MSWA and is Calvert's fourth two time SMAC champion.

Others:

Freshman Max Buff (112) lost a heartbreaking 6-5 semi-final match to #1 seed Jeremy Harpold of Thomas Stone. But Max kept his head high and defeated Josh Litz of Chopticon in the consolation semi-finals and then major decisioned James Cox of Patuxent in the consolation finals to place third. As a freshman, this is quite an accomplishment!

Junior Buck Sampson (119) came into the tournament as the #4 seed. Buck started off with a 12-2 major decision in his first match but then was pinned in the semi-finals by eventual champion, and #1 seed, B.J. Treadway of McDonough. Buck scored another pin in the consolation semi-finals but then lost in the consolation finals by the score of 16-8 to William McKinney of Patuxent to take fourth.

Sophomore Justin Holman came into the tournament as the #4 seed but proved to be one better by taking third place. Justin scored a pin over Jesse Ratliff of Northern in his first match. But he then lost to the #1 seed, Eric MacFarlane of Thomas Stone, by the score of 7-2 in the semi-finals. He defeated Adam Dankulich from LaPlata by the score of 7-2 in the consolation semi-finals. And then he won an exciting overtime bout by the score of 6-4 in the consolation finals over the #2 seed, Buddy Sweeny of St. Mary's Ryken.

Sophomore Tony Roberts came in unseeded but promptly made his presence known. First, he pinned Josh Hettel of McDonough in 1:46 of the first period. Then he scored a huge 13-4 major decision over the #2 seed, Jason Fish of Thomas Stone. In the semi-finals, Tony was leading the #3 seed, Quinn Flynn of Westlake when he got caught and was pinned. However, Tony kept his chin up and scored his second major decision of the tournament when he defeated Apollo Thomas of Leonardtown in the consolation semi-finals by the score of 11-3. Tony was holding his own against Martin Queen of Lackey in the consolation finals when got caught again and was pinned at 4:40 to end up placing fourth.

Two other Calvert wrestlers placed when senior Jeremiah Cleman (152) placed fifth and sophomore Dustin Little (125) placed sixth.
