State Tournament Summary

5th Place - Jason Poore (140 Pounds - Junior):

Jason came into the tournament as the South #3 seed with a record of 31-6. His first match was against Wes Woodward, the North #2 seed from Eastern Technical, with a record of 28-3. Jason was extremely aggresive right from the start by putting Woodward on his back twice in the first period to jump out to a big lead. He kept the pressure on and secured a 17-1 technical fall. Jason's second match was against Tony Howard, the West #1 seed from Magruder, who had a record of 33-1. Howard, the eventual champion, was too much for Jason and defeated him by the score of 14-3.

Dropping down into the consolation bracket, Jason then wrestled Al Waters, the East #4 seed from Queen Anne's. Waters had a record of 25-13 and was no match for Jason as evidenced by Jason's pin in 4:55. The consolation quarter finals was against Richard Johnson, the East #1 seed from Patterson, with a record of 28-6. Once again Jason proved to be too much for his opponent this time getting the pin in 4:45.

The consolation semi-finals match was against Carl Chirichella, the West #2 seed from Paint Branch, with a record of 31-6. Not having much rest from his previous match, Jason was not up to the task and lost 5-1. This moved him into the fifth/sixth place match against Steve Shedaker from J.M. Bennett. Shedaker was the East #3 seed and came into the match with a 29-8 record. Jason was too much for him though and won a tight match. And with that, Jason was the fifth place finisher for the 1998 Maryland 3A/4A State Tournament. He finished his season with a 35-8 record and, in the process, set the school record for the most wins in a season. Congratulations, Jason!

6th Place - Jermaine Barnes (130 Pounds - Senior):

Jermaine came into the tournament as the South #2 seed with a record of 24-5. Jermaine's first match was against the East #3 seed, Dave Reitmeyer from Northeast, who had a record of 25-9. Jermaine won by the score of 13-5 to set up his championship quarter final match against the West #1 seed, Frank Edwards from Sherwood, with a record of 31-3. Edwards, an eventual finalist, won a tough battle over Jermaine by the score of 11-6.

In the preliminary round of the consolation bracket, Jermaine went against Wyatt Deiaco from North Carroll. Deiaco was the North #4 seed and had a record of 20-14. In a back and forth match, Jermaine prevailed 16-8 and moved on to the consolation quarter finals against Dave Hicks from Old Mill. Hicks was the East #2 seed and had a record of 29-5. This match was similar to the previous with both wrestlers scoring their share of points however, once again, Jermaine prevailed by the score of 15-9.

The consolation semi-finals match was against Kyle Burger, the North #2 seed from Westminster. Burger came into the match with a 34-5 record and, unfortunately for Jermaine, won by a pin in 4:18. The loss sent Jermaine into the fifth/sixth place match to face Ryan Howard, the East #1 seed from Chesapeake, who came into the match with a record of 28-7. The long day had caught up with Jermaine and he lost by a pin. But Jermaine can still be proud as the sixth place finisher for the 1998 Maryland 3A/4A State Tournament. He finished his season with a 27-8 record. Congratulations, Jermaine!

6th Place - Scott McAdoo (152 Pounds - Junior):

Scott entered the state tournament as the South #2 seed with a record of 31-5. In his first match he was paired up against the East #3 seed, Taven Phillips from Mervo, who had a 21-3 record. Scott dominated and won an easy technical fall by the score of 16-1. His next match was the championship quarter finals against the West #1 seed, Ivan Zdanov from Frederick, who had a record of 30-2. Zdanov, who was an eventual finalist and was ranked second in the state, had won a match with Scott earlier in the season by the score of 7-0. This time, the match was much tighter with Scott trailing 5-4 going into the third period. However, Scott made some mistakes in trying to gain the lead and ended up losing 10-4.

In the first round of the consolation bracket, Scott was matched up against Muhamad Howard from Milford Mill. Howard was the North #4 seed and came in with a record of 20-7. This young man had an unusual style which frustrated Scott but, nevertheless, Scott prevailed with a 7-4 victory. Scott's next opponent was Joey Pandullo from Meade. Panduallo had been ranked as high as fifth during the season and came in as the East #2 seed with a record of 31-4. This one started out wild with both wrestlers scoring their share of points in the first period which ended with Scott leading 5-4. Scott then took control of the match and dominated from that point forward. After giving a meaningless reversal in the last few seconds, Scott won the match by the score of 13-7.

Scott's consolation semi-final opponent was John Muse from Westminster. Muse was the #3 seed from the North and came into the match with a record of 31-11. Scott led going into the third period by the score of 7-3. But he tired, having had only 30 minutes rest since his previous match, and got caught in a cement job and was pinned. This took Scott to the fifth/sixth place match against Chris Osario from Aberdeen. Osario, the North #2 seed, came into the match with a 30-3 record and was ranked sixth in the state. It was a tough match for Scott as Osorio ended up winning 13-5. Scott ended up as the 1998 Maryland 3A/4A State Tournament sixth place finisher with a final record of 34-8. Congratulations, Scott!

6th Place - Paul Sheran (189 Pounds - Junior):

Paul came into the tournament as the South #2 seed with a record of 25-10. His first match was against the West #3 seed from Sherwood, Ray Richards. Richards brought a 28-7 record into the match but could not stand up to Paul's strength. Paul won the match 9-4. His second match was against eventual finalist Matt Kunkle from Aberdeen. Kunkle, the North #1 seed, came into the match with a 28-1 record and was a Freestyle All-American. Paul did a great job but came up on the short end of a 9-5 score.

The loss to Kunkle dropped Paul into the consolation bracket where his first match was against Dominic West from Southwestern. West was the East #4 seed and had a record of 28-7. The match was close until Paul finally caught him in a cradle and pinned him at 3:55. The consolation quarter finals saw Paul facing off with Kevin Lawrence from Paint Branch. Lawrence was the West #2 seed and had a record of 30-8. He was no match for Paul though as Paul pinned him in only 1:26.
The consolation semi-finals matched Paul up with the North #2 seed, Bryant Mallory from Kenwood. Mallory came in with a record of 29-2. His only two losses this season were to the two eventual finalists in the tournament. In fact, Mallory had just lost by only 8-6 to the undefeated, and eventual champion, O'Brien from Liganore who was 34-0. Like his teammates, Paul had just wrestled his previous match only about a half hour before while his opponent, having lost in the championship semi-finals, had about 2-3 hours rest. Paul fought gamely but ended up on the short end 15-7. Paul's last match was the fifth/sixth place match and was against Michawn Yuvienco from North County. Yuvienco was the East #2 seed and had a record of 31-3. It was a close, hard fought match with Yuvienco winning 4-3. And so, Paul is now the 1998 Maryland 3A/4A State Tournament sixth place finisher. His final record was 28-13. Congratulations, Paul!

Others:

Sophomore Buck Sampson (112) came into the tournament as the South #3 seed with a record of 22-15. His first match was about as tough as you can get against the defending state champion, Chris Combs from Old Mill. Combs, the eventual champion for the second year, came in as the East #2 seed with a record of 20-2. After putting up a brave fight, Buck was pinned at 3:10. Buck's second match wasn't any easier as he wrestled the #1 seed from the North, Mike Strobel from Fallston, who brought a record of 30-5 into the match. Again, Buck put in a great effort but ultimately lost 12-4. And with that, Buck was out of tournament. Although he didn't place, it was a great accomplishment for a sophomore just to make it into the tournament. His final record was 22-17. Congratulations, Buck!
