Ozymandias Victorious!

Seen in Watchmen # 11, August 1987

It was a conspiracy from the start. The government agent Comedian was murdered. The god-like Dr. Manhattan left Earth when accused of giving cancer to people. The vigilante Rorschach was framed and imprisoned.

All these acts were put into place for one purpose: to save a world on the brink of World War III by creating a common enemy for both the U.S. and the Soviets, namely space aliens. The man behind it all? Retired hero Adrian Veidt, a.k.a. Ozymandias. Veidt manufactured an "alien being," removed his enemies from the picture, and was ultimately going to teleport the "alien" into the heart of Manhattan, instantly killing itself and half the city in the process.

But when fellow hero Nite Owl breaks Rorschach out of prison, they discover Viedt's behind the conspiracy and confront him. Veidt defeats him with ease and details his heinous hoax. Laughing at the absurdity of it, Nite Owl asks, "When were you going to do it?"

"Do it?" Veidt says, straight-faced, "I did it 35 minutes ago."

It is this moment that makes me believe Watchmen to be the greatest story ever published, Ozymandias the greatest villain ever created, and this moment should have been number one.
