LITTLE ROCK

Little Rock was a dwarf miniature horse that was brought to me by my Farrier. He brought the litle guys need for a home and care to my attention. When the little guy arrived the first thing I noticed was how fat he was. He had obviously been being fed well..to well. But then upon closer inspection you could understand why he had gained weight. From inactivity. His hooves were so overgrown that they curled up like genie slippers and he was walking on the sides of them. I say walking, but believe me he wasnt doing much of that. My farrier worked on his feet over and over yet we could not get the hooves trimmed to the point where his leg would straighten so my farrier suggested using a compound that we could form a "hoof" around his own hoof to gently encourage the leg to straighten. This was not a quick process but with just that first try we saw results. He was sore for a couple of days.We did the massages to his legs and shoulders, used linaments and aspirin to help with his pain and by the third day this little guy actually bucked and kinda clumsily ran. He had a chance to wander the fields and play with the dogs( He was the same height as the portuguese water dog). He was happy in his last years. Little rock was in his 20's when he had a stroke. The vet was called in and we were told he was not going to get over this. He had become partially paralyzed and was barely able to breath. Little Rock was taken up under a shade tree where I talked to him, told him how much he was loved and stroked his beautiful little face as he was given a shot to take him away from the pain and confusion he must have been feeling. He was buried next to ladyhawke.
