WAR TOUCHES US ALL
© Martha Miranda 2001

I was born in '34 and I remember well the war
And I remember that the war made our family a lot more poor
Mama worked at Firestone putting rivets in the planes
And Daddy worked there too welding such beautiful beads
The war touches us all

I remember seeing the news' reels and the bombs falling down
And I remember well the crucifix that hung on my bedroom wall
I'd turn upon my belly because I feared so much the war
That bombs would come falling through my ceiling
The war touches us all

I still cannot sleep any other way than on my belly
And when I was pregnant, it was an awful chore
I'd dig a hole in the sand so I could feel the heat of the sun
Upon my aching back while lying there in the Florida warm sand
The war touches us all

They'd give us stamps to get a bag of sugar and some flour
They'd give us stamps to get some white lard
That we coloured with a yellow gel
And this we called butter! Ugh!
The war touches us all

Now I know these hardships to some
Seem a little childish and of no count
But fear is fear is fear is fear
And it cripples little hearts
The war touches us all

Since that time I've understood
Hatred has no color, no face
And since that time I've come to see
The scars on the whole human race
The war touches us all

Some have scars on their minds and souls
And some have scars so deep they'll never be whole
And some have nothing to do with those who've done so much
Because they have not learned the fear
Of sleeping on the belly

They let others do the fearing
They let others do the fighting
They let others do the dying
They let others do the crying
They let others do the honouring
They let others do the burying
They let others do the sacrificing
They let others do the caring
They let others pay for freedom
They let others go to war
They let others balance the scales
At the cost of their own blood

Doesn't anybody know when things will be all right?
Doesn't anybody know when darkness will be light?
Doesn't anybody know when tears and pain will end?
Doesn't anybody know?
Doesn't anybody care?

Why are little babies born with hearts that don't work right?
And why are little children so hungry every night?
And why do men hate men so much and always want to fight?
It seems no one can tell me!
Doesn't anybody know?

If the answers were so simple
There would be peace
And if the answers were so easy
There would be no wars
And if the answers were so visible
Why does the world sit in such darkness?

It will sit in darkness until we all learn to say,
I love you!
It will sit in darkness until we all learn to say,
Forgive me! I'm sorry!
We are all created by one GOD
And that One GOD commands us to love one another,
To forgive one another, and to dwell in peace!

That is the answer...Now how to get there?
That is the question!
