This section identifies those members of the SPAWR family who have served in America's military services, both before and since the American Revolution. This section will be in continuous development as research continues.

Wars before the American Revolution (prior to 1776)

War of the American Revolution

War prior to the War of 1812

Valentine J. SPAWR, wounded at Battle of Fallen Timbers by a musket round, August 20, 1794; while serving with a Pennsylvania militia unit under command of General "Mad Anthony" Wayne.

War in the Heartland (prior to 1861)

George W. SPAWR served in an Illinois militia unit in the Blackhawk War in Illinois in the late 1830's.

The American Civil War

Valentine L. SPAWR served in Company C of the 14th Iowa Infantry Regiment from 1863 until he was discharged in November 1864.

John SPAWR served in Company G of the 32d Iowa Infantry Regiment; discharged in spring 1864.

Thomas J. SPAWR served in Company C of the 94th Illinois Infantry Regiment; killed in action on April 26, 1863 near Rolla, Missouri.

Charles W. SPAWR served in Company C and Company I of the 110th Illinois Infantry Regiment from Franklin County, IL, beginning in August 1862.

William W. SPAWR served in Company K of the 71st Illinois Infantry Regiment from DuQuoin County, IL, beginning in July 1862; upon expiration of his 3-month enlistment, he re-enlisted in the 152d Illinois Infantry Regiment and served for a period of one-year.

Elijah Valentine SPAWR served in Company C of the 18th Illinois Infantry Regiment.

Wars against the Western Indian Nations

Spanish-American War

World War I

Clarence Valentine SPAWR, was commissioned as Lieutenant Commander and Medical Officer on board the battleships USS Massachusetts and USS Rhode Island in 1917-1918.

World War II

Clarence Valentine SPAWR Jr. served in an Ordnance unit from Southwest Michigan in April 1942; served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany; was direct-commissioned as 2LT of Military Police in 1945. Returned to the US in November 1945.

Charles Edgar SPAWR served in the U.S. Navy; was a torpedo-man on the destroyer USS Porter which was sunk by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft off Okinawa in 1945; he was injured, but recovered to return to the US.

Korean War

Viet-Nam War

Jimmy L. SPAWR served in the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in the II Corps Tactical Zone near An Khe in 1968-69.

Clarence Valentine SPAWR III served two tours from October 1967 through June 1969, with the 1st Infantry Division, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), and in a special operations capacity with the 4th Psychological Operations Group, all in the III Corps Tactical Zone between Saigon and the Cambodian border.

John C. SPAWR served in the U.S. Navy after the Viet-Nam war period.

Grenada and Panama

Persian Gulf War and Continuing Conflict

William Garner (descended from Valentine Spawr through his daughter Sarah and her husband Harrison Flesher) enlisted in the US Navy in 1984 and served in the Gulf Wars. He retired from the Navy in 2004.

Ryan Christopher Cox Spawr is a member of the United States Air Force Reserve, stationed at Peterson AFB, Colorado Spring, CO. He currently holds the rank of Staff Sergeant, and is assigned to an airlift unit at Peterson.
