Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum lived from 1759 to 28 Tamuz 1841. He was the Yismach Moshe, and he brought Hungarian Jewry to the Chassidic world. He studied under his uncle Rabbi Yosef of Kulbozow, and Rabbi Aryeh Leib Ha-Levi, author of Derishs Ari on Even He-Ezer (Lvov, 1804). He was repued ot know 800 pages of Talmud by heart at the age of seventeen. Rabbi Moshe's only son in law, Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Lipshitz, author of Aryeh De-Bei Ilai and Ateres Zekainim on the Talmud (Przymysl, 1874), influenced Rabbi Moshe to visit the Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak, the Seer of Lublin, who he visited three times.

Rabbi Moshe was a mystic. Once in a dream he was taken to the Garden of Eden. He saw the sages of the Mishna, the Tannaim, studying the Talmud. He exclaimed, "Is this then all there is in the Garden of Eden?" He was told in the dream, "You are wrong in believing that the Tannaim are in the Garden of Eden. The Garden of Eden is in the Tannaim."
