What is Zen?

___________

Zen is an ancient form of art, philosophy, and spirituality. It involves the letting go of oneself to realize the fullness of existence. The philosophy of Zen identifies the ego as the source of human spiritual limitations. Once one can shed the ego, they can see the 10,000 things, or realize their interconnectedness with all existence. The practice of zazen, or just sitting, is the primary method of shedding the ego. There is a correct posture for sitting which aligns the body most naturally and allows for the most stability during zazen. Students of Zen have to meet with a Zen master who tests their knowledge and ability to realize zen. The master often presents the students with koans. These are questions which are paradoxical in nature and have no real set answer. Through these, the students are able to learn to let go of the self and all conscious thought, often referred to as the monkey brain. It is through this process that they acheive enlightenment.
