Class:

Akira - Firing Phasers

The USS Akira entered service in 2357, and a rapid production run put more than eighty others into the fleet over the next ten years. Most of the Akira class have been based far from the core of the Federation, generally operating out of distant Starbases on long-term exploration missions. More recently, the escalation of tensions in the last few years has led to many of the class being recalled to operate nearer to home; thirty five of these ships were assigned to the Typhon Sector Fleet in 2370, the remainder being assigned to the areas adjacent to the Cardassian, Klingon and Romulan borders. Akira class vessels featured prominently in the 2372 Borg attack on Earth; the Typhon Fleet, together with several reinforcement squadrons, fought a running battle with the Borg vessel from the Typhon sector to Earth. Many of the ships were destroyed during this battle.

Ships include the USS Akira, USS Thunderchild (NCC-63549), and an unnamed ship that defended Earth from the Borg.

Ambassador - Rotating Ship

This class includes the USS Portland (NCC-57418), which was seen in "The Die is Cast," DS9.

Constellation - Side View

Type of Federation starship that the Stargazer belonged to, as well as the Constellation, Hathaway, and Victory. The Constellation class is similar in size to the Constitution class, they are equipped with four nacelles and thus were well-suited for deep space exploration and patrolling duties. *The ship class was named as it was because it was similar to the name of "Constitution," which had originally been the class of the Stargazer in "The Battle." They had already done the filming for the episode, and LaForge had already said Constitution in that episode, so it made it easier to dub it over and insert the word Constellation when they decided to change the class.*

Constitution (refit) - Rotating Ship, Side View

One of Starfleet's most famous vehicles, the Constitution-class starships included the original Starship Enterprise. During the time of Captain Kirk's 5-year mission, only 12 of these ships were in exsistence. Now, thanks to refitting, these ships are being commissioned again. Constitution-class starships included: Constellation (NCC-1017), Constitution (NCC-1700), Defiant (NCC-1764), Eagle (NCC-956), Endeavour (NCC-1895), Enterprise (NCC-1701), Excalibur (NCC-1664), Exeter (NCC-1672), Hood (NCC-1703), Intrepid (NCC-1831), Lexington (NCC-1709), Potemkin (NCC-1657), Republic (NCC-1371), and Yorktown (NCC-1717). Constitution-class ships use duotronic computers.

Daedalus - Rotating Ship

One of the first classes of starships commissioned and operated under the auspices of the UFP. These ships were among the first to demonstrate the primary-secondary hull and warp nacelle designs that would become characteristic of Starfleet vessels. Commissioned ships include the USS Daedalus, USS Carolina (NCC-160), USS Essex (NCC-173), USS Horizon(NCC-176), and USS Archon (NCC-189).

Danube Class - Side View

The Danube class starships, often referred to as "Runabouts," are the smallest registered vessels in Starfleet. While sometimes mistaken for large shuttlecraft, Danubes are not shuttlecraft at all. The Danube was designed to be a long range craft with the ability to travel at high warp speeds for upwards of 40 consecutive days. It has very powerful shields and a potent weapons array for a craft of its size. The Danube is above all a multipurpose craft. Its modular design allows it to be used for missions ranging from research to ferrying to close comabat. A pod which contains mission specific equipment such as extra weapons or sensors can be attached above the wings. Additionally, the central compartment of the ship can be replaced with other mission specific equipment pods if needed. Danubes have found a particular niche at starbases as general purpose craft, especially at deep space stations where a starship is not always readily at hand. The Danube is perfect for occasional missions away from the starbase since it requires only one person to pilot it (though it can contain up to 16 people comfortably). The Danube class will likely remain in service for quite some time due to its adaptability and potency.

Ships in this class include: USS Danube, USS Shenendoah, USS Rio Grande, USS Yangtze Kiang, USS Ganges, USS Orinoco, USS Mekong, USS Rubicon, USS Volga, and the USS Yukon.

Defiant - Rotating Ship, Side View

The projected build time for the Defiant class of Starship was set at only 8 months, almost a tenth of the time it took to complete a standard size starship. The ship was released for testing in 2368, butr massive problems were found in the power systems, weapons arrays and the structural integrity field. It was overpowered for a ship of its size and with less threat from the Borg, the project was stopped and the Defiant project was unfinished. The ship was taken out of storage and posted at Deep Space Nine after the discovery of the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant. The two other ships, the Valiant and an as yet unnamed ship are both ready to be assemble within a month if necessary.

Excelsior (refit) - Rotating Ship

Dubbed "the Great Experiment," the first Excelsior-class vessel was launched in 2285 as a test of the unsuccessful transwarp drive development project. The ship, later refit with a normal warp drive, became the prototype for the numerous Excelsior-class starships that would be built. These ships include the USS Enterprise-B, the Hood, the Repulse, the Intrepid, Malinche, Swiftsure, Typhoon, Tomahawk, Crazy Horse, Agamemnon, Hikaru Sulu, Canberra, Hiroshima, Cairo, Johannesburg, Oxford, Gorkon, and many more.

Hope Class - Side View

Ships in this class include the USS Pasteur (NCC-58928) {Captain Beverly Picard's Ship}, and possibly a USS Hope.

Note: There has been some debate over the class of this ship. The Encyclopedia indentified it as Olympic class. However, both "Journey's End" and the dedication plaque identify it as Hope Class. There may be ships similar to this now that are called Olympic class, but the Pasteur was in an alternate timeline and in that timeline, it is Hope Class.

Intelligence - Front/Side View No information available.

Intrepid - Rotating Ship, Side View

A newer class of ship, the Intrepid class includes the Starship Voyager, which disappeared on a Maquis capture mission in the badlands, and was never heard from again. The prometheus class was an inspiration for this class. Other ships include INTREPID, JAMES T KIRK, COCHRANE, DAYSTROM, EINSTEIN, HAWKING, and GENESIS.

The Intrepid-class starship was considered one of the hardest ships to build with 12 redesigns completed before USS Intrepid was finally commissioned. The Original project brief was for a long range scout ship, but this was altered to an Explorer class vessel. One of the major considerations was a ship that could sustain high warp for a greater length of time than what had currently been produced. Using field data gathered from the Galaxy class project engineers felt that a number of modifications could be made to produce a high power and yet reliable core. The ship was completed in record time partially due to the weakened state of the Federation after the Borg incident at Worf 359.

The projected build time for the Intrepid Class Starship was originally set at 6 years, however with increased manpower and new facilities and equipment this was reduced to a record 2 years, nearly one third of the original estimate. However there were considerable modification that took place during the construction of the ship, a prime example being the variable geometry Warp Nacelles which were only implemented within the last years of the construction.

Merced -

Includes the USS Trieste (NCC-37124, from "11001001," TNG).

Miranda - Rotating Ship, Side View

Federation starship class introduced in the late 23rd century. Miranda class starships have included the Reliant, and two different Saratogas. Miranda-class vessels are similar to Soyuz-class vessels. *Named for Prospero's Daughter, in William Shakespeare's last play, "The Tempest."* The Miranda class project was developed for Starfleet's need for a medium sized starship that would be easy to produce and provide adequate defensive and scientific capabilities that would require less upkeep than the larger Constitution class ships. This class, still widely used in the fleet, was more of an "economy" ship.

Stats: Officer Crew: 60, Enlisted Crew: 110, Civilians (Families): Varies from ship to ship, Height: N/A, Width: N/A, Number of Decks: 12 , Warp Engines: MARA, Impulse Engines: Standard, Computer System:DCLD Later upgraded to LCARS, Expected Duration: 80 Years, Time between resupply: 5 years, Time between refits: 15-20 years, Type of ship: Science, escort, freighter, scout

New Orleans - Rotating Ship, Underneath, Above

Federation vessels, often classified as frigates. The starships Renegade, Rutledge, and Thomas Paine, as well as the Kyushu, were New Orleans-class ships. *Named for the ship we called the City of New Orleans*

The New Orleans carries a surprisingly heavy armament for her size; the three burst fire torpedo tubes are capable of firing bursts of up to six torpedoes at once, while her shield grid is one of the most powerful ever installed in a ship of this size. Her manoeuvrability is also quite impressive, while the sensor and computer systems represent a significant increase in capacity over previous designs.

When the Borg launched their invasion of the Federation in 2365 five ships of the New Orleans class were in service; three of these managed to reach Wolf 359 in time to join the fleet which engaged the Borg in that system. The ships were lost with all hands; again calls were made for these ships to be scrapped, but in fairness Wolf 359 was hardly a reasonable test and many far more powerful ships were also lost in this battle. Starfleet stepped up production of the class in order to make up the shortfall in Starfleet numbers.

With the advent of the Dominion threat Starfleet petitioned for and was granted a massive increase in their force levels. Production of the New Orleans class went into high gear. And order for twenty seven units had been placed after Wolf 359 and these ships were emerging from the production lines in 2370 when the USS Odessy was destroyed by the Dominion. A further eighty two ships were ordered shortly after this incident; improved manufacturing processes have reduced the build time for a New Orleans from five to three years, and the first batch of this order arrived shortly after the start of the Dominion war. Although details are unavailable, the New Orleans is thought to have performed well during the conflict so far.

Niagra -

Includes the USS Princeton (NCC-59804, destroyed at Wolf 359) and the USS Wellington (NCC-28473, from "11001001," TNG).

Small Federation starships frequently used for scientific missions. Oberth-class ships have included the USS Biko (NCC-50331, "A Fistful of Datas," TNG), USS Bonestell (NCC-31600, destroyed at Wolf 359), USS Grissom (NCC-638, destroyed in ST;III), SS Vico (NAR-18834, research vessel, non-Starfleet, from "Hero Worship," TNG), USS Tsiolkovsky (NCC-35911, from "The Naked Now," TNG) USS Cochrane (NCC-59318, from "Emissary," DS9), USS Copernicus (NCC-623, from ST:IV), the USS Pegasus (NCC-53847, prototype cloaking vessel presumably destroyed by a warp core breach, later located embedded in an asteroid, "The Pegasus," TNG), the USS Raman (NCC-59983, from "Interface," TNG), and there was presumably a USS Oberth after which the class was named. *It was first named after the 20th century German rocket pioneer, Hermann Oberth.* The Oberth class has over the years served Starfleet well. Extremely outdated by todays standards the Oberth is not heavily armed and not very quick. What it is though, is an established vessel of the fleet which serves many functions. Test vessel for new technologies, Troop carrier, but its over all role is as a Science vessel.

Peregrine - Maquis ship class.

Prometheus - Model, Front/Side View, Under Fire

The Prometheus is top secret and only a few people in Starfleet have been trained to operate it. It is equipped with four warp nacelles and is the fastest starship in the fleet. The Prometheus-class was designed for deep space tactical missions. One tactical advantage of the Prometheus is the multi- vector assault mode. When multi-vector assault mode is initiated the ship separates into, not two, but three seperate sections. The top, middle, and bottom separate. All three sections can be controlled from the bridge.

This is still an experimental class of ship. This prototype still has many bugs left to work out. Its main flaw lies within its multi vector attack mode. If something happens to the center section of the starship during a battle, the other two sections of the ship have no way to reconnect. Also, each section should have its own command crew for better control of the battles. It is currently radio controlled by the computer which could be jammed leaving two sections of the ship stranded.

Reliant - Flyby

Named after the USS Reliant (NCC-1864), a Miranda class starship.

Renaissance -

Includes the USS Aries (NCC-45167, from "The Icarus Factor," TNG), USS Hokkaido (NCC-?, last of this class to be constructed), USS Hornet (NCC-45231, "Redemption, pt. 2," TNG), and USS Maryland (NCC-45109, from "In Purgatory's Shadow," DS9).

Rigel -

Includes the USS Akagi (NCC-62158, mispronounced in "You Are Cordially Invited," DS9), and the USS Tolstoy (NCC-62095, destroyed at Wolf 359).

Sabre - Top View, In Motion

The original specifications of the Sabre called for a crew of 130, but increased automation of the engineering systems allowed this to be cut to 118 and then 102. Conditions for the crew are quite poor by the standards of the Steamrunner or Akira classes; crew quarters average 40 square metres and there are no holodecks. In addition, there are no personal replicator stations in crew quarters - instead a mess area is provided with replicator systems for the whole crew.

The Sabres have proved reasonably successful in service, although the relatively poor living conditions has led to a shorter than expected average mission duration. Like the Akira and Steamrunner classes, Sabres have largely served in the frontier regions and they have been an uncommon sight at the heart of the Federation. This has changed over the last three years, when many of the Sabre class have been relocated near the core as part of Starfleets buildup of forces against the Dominion. Sabres featured heavily during the recent Borg incursion, where many of the ships involved in the Typhon and Earth battles were destroyed or severely damaged.

Sabres have included the USS Sabre and the USS Yeager (NCC-81947), the latter being a ship that defended Earth from the Borg.

Sequoia -

Includes the USS Yellowstone (NCC-70073, listed in the Omnipedia).

Sovereign - Rotating Ship

The Sovereign Class of Star Ship was to be the replacement for the Galaxy class of ships that would be over ten years old after the first Sovereign class ship was launched. The original design brief was simply for that and designer work for over a year on design specifications for the new ships. The final design was a culmination of designs from over the 80 year history of the ASDB, featuring the best features of all the designs they had developed. The ship was much smoother and sleeker than before, offering a more tolerant warp field therefore allowing greater speeds. Many design changes took place along the way and the overall ship was one of the most advanced Starfleet had ever built. With a projected build time at over 20 years again, after the Borg incident, production was stepped up, and the figure dropping to 15 years. Ships include: the SOVEREIGN, ENTERPRISE, RESOLUTION, and INDEPENDENCE.

Stats: Officer Crew: 200, Enlisted Crew: 400, Civilians (Families): 300, Maximum Capacity: 3900, Number of Decks: 25, Height: 120 Meters, Width: 275 Meters, Length: 700 Meters, Warp Engines: MARA, Impulse Engines: Standard, Computer System: LCARS, Expected Duration: 120 Years, Times Between Resupply: 15 Years, Times Between Refits: 20 Years, Category : Explorer.

Soyuz - Rotating Ship

A variant on the Miranda-class. Soyuz-class starships feature an enlarged aft cargo and shuttlebay section, as well as several outboard sensor pods. The Soyuz's shields were also upgraded to make it a more formidable warship. Most notably, the Soyuz class has large weapon suites protruding both above and below the aft quarterdeck. These added weapons give the Soyuz an advantage over the Miranda-class in its firepower. The Soyuz-class was withdrawn from service by Starfleet in 2288.

The USS Soyuz and the USS Bozeman (NCC-1941) were both Soyuz-class ships.

Springfield -

Includes the USS Chekov (NCC-53702, which was destroyed at Wolf 359).

Steamrunner - Rear View

The Steamrunner design was fielded in the early 40s along with the Akira and Sabre as part of a major fleet-wide programme of modernization. Essentially the Steamrunners serve a similar function to the modern day Intrepid class - a smaller, faster counterpart to the cruiser class ships which would be deployed in large numbers to augment the more capable designs. The first of the class was launched in 2342, and series production began after a six month flight test program.

The Steamrunner introduced several innovations into Starfleet; she was the first to be equipped with an isolinear computer system rather than the duotronic system then in use. Her hull form was also rather unusual in appearance; the triangular profile of the primary hull was claimed to be an inherently stronger shape than the traditional circular shape, allowing a reduction in the thickness of the structural beams which decreased the overall vessel mass by some 12%. This made for greater acceleration at both impulse and warp. However, some flaws have surfaced in the design; Steamrunner class ships which engaged in extended periods of high warp speed found some cracking in the structural members of the primary hull. Several fixes were tried to correct this problem; Starfleet finally found that a combination of a modified Structural Integrity Field system and slight changes to the Warp drive itself eliminated the harmonic vibrations which were causing the problem. Those vessels already damaged had to have some of their main hull support structure replaced, a task which set construction of the class back some time.

Since much of the state of the art technology to be incorporated into Steamrunner had already been developed for use on Defiant, the R&D stages proceeded very quickly. Steamrunner's design is revolutionary in that the warp nacelles are integrated into the hull. This gives Steamrunner a smaller cross-section signature, making it more difficult to target in battle, and allows more efficient energy transfer from the warp core to the nacelles. Additionally, the compact design and balance contribute to Steamrunner's impressive maneuverability. Steamrunner's warp core is a modified version of the core that was used in Defiant. Steamrunner is fitted with the latest weaponry, including fountain stream phasers and quantum torpedoes. Perhaps the most unique piece of technology on Steamrunner is a new deflector array which actually "ghosts" the ship. Unlike a cloaking device which wraps space around the vessel, Steamrunner's ghosting array actually produces ripples in the space around the ship. This causes the sensors of enemy ships to misjudge the location of the ship, making targeting solutions all but impossible. The drawback to this device is that it consumes vast amounts of energy and emits high levels of tachyon radiation. For this reason, the array was hung between the nacelles far aft of the saucer module.

The USS Steamrunner and the USS Appalachia (NCC-52136) were both in this class.

Surak - Rotating Ship

*Named for the father of Vulcan philosophy.* Includes the USS Zapata (NCC-33184).

Sydney - Rotating Ship

A small ship resembling a runabout. The Jenolen, lost in 2294, carrying Montgomery Scott, was a Sydney-class ship. Some of these ships were built without warp drives, intended for use as large shuttlecraft.

Ticonderoga - Top No information available.

Wambundu -

Includes the USS Drake (NCC-20831, destroyed in "The Arsenal of Freedom," TNG) and the USS Fleming (NCC-20316, medical transport abandoned in "Force of Nature," TNG).
