GET TO KNOW WESTERN VISAYAS Phantoms of Early Mayans By Atty. Rex S. Salvilla Like any other primitive peoples, the ancient Malays also believed in supernatural beings and phantoms. The most common of these is the aswang (witch) who assumes extra large animal forms at night like a dog, cat or pig. It terrorizes people, eat them, or change them into tigbao (reed) or upas (banana stalk) or it may be a small bird (tiktik) or it can be invisible (tigadlum). Other phantoms were: tamawo (fairy) which live in enchanted trees like lunok, bubogm salay, kamandag, or maliao; kamakama or lulid (elf) living inside the anthills; tayho (enchanted horse), bagat (a ghost terrorizing people at night); mantio (giant), bawa (enchanted bird), palhi (evil spirit) dwelling in enchanted places (mari-it) and maranhig (one who refused to die and terrorize people).
