This is the way I understand Spiff. It will bring out the highlights more and deepen the shadows.
Below are examples of using spiff at least three times on an image. You can control how much you want highlighted by how many times you use it on the image.
Before on the left and After is on the right.

Unfortunately it also washed out colors too. So unless that is what you want to happen I would use it only once or twice in between effects on images with color.
Now with emboss is another story. It will bring out the details more by using the same method of brightening the highlights and deepening the shadows. For emboss this is great. I have Examples below. Before on the left and After on the right.

Did you notice how it brought out the details more by using highlights and shadows? You can use spiff as many times as needed or wanted to get the effect you want on an Emboss. But with colored images you need to use it sparingly if you want to keep the color.
