J.065 Anabhirati Jaataka Women cannot be regarded as private property. They are common to all and extend universal hospitality. The bodhisatva was once a famous teacher in Benares. A pupil of his, finding his wife unfaithful, was so affected by his discovery that he stayed away from classes. When asked why, he told his teacher the whole story. The latter consoled him, saying that no woman can be expected to be faithful. The story was told to a layman who came to visit the Buddha.
