The bodhisatva was once born as king of a flock of pigeons. For a long time they
paid regular visits to a good ascetic who lived in a nearby cave. One day the ascetic
departed and was replaced by a sham ascetic. The pigeons continued their visits until,
one day, villager served the ascetic with pigeon meat, and liking the flavour he
plotted to kill the pigeons. The bodhisatva, suspecting his intentions, warned his
followers and charged the ascetic with hypocrisy. See also the Godha
