The story of a wicked ascetic who built himself a hut on a river bank near Benares
under a mango tree. He ate the ripe mangoes as they fell. In order to warn him, Sakka
made it appear as if the orchard had been plundered by thieves. Returning from his
alms-round, and seeing what had happened, the ascetic charged the four daughters
of a merchant with having stolen the mangoes. They denied the charge and swore dreadful
oaths to support their statement. Thereupon he let them go. The story was told about
an elder who had entered the Order in his old age and who, instead of practising
his duties, looked after mangoes. Thieves stole his mangoes and he charged four innocent
merchant daughters who happened to be visiting the orchard with the theft. They swore
oaths to prove they were not guilty and were released. |
