Ayaku.ta Jaataka |
The bodhisatva was once the king of Benares. At that time the people were in the
habit of sacrificing animals to the gods in order to win their favour. The Bodhisatva
proclaimed that no living being should be slain. Being enraged by the loss of their
food, the yaksas sent a representative to murder the bodhisatva -- whereupon Sakkaís
throne grew hot and learning the cause, he came to protect the bodhisatva from the
yaksa. The bodhisatva saw the yaksa standing over him, ready to strike but powerless,
and learned later to his great encouragement that Sakka had been there to protect
him. The reason for the telling of the story is given in the Mahaaka.nha
