The bodhisatva was born as Ghatakumara, king of Benares. One of his ministers misconducted
himself in the royal harem an the bodhisatva, catching him in the act, banished him.
The minister took service with Vanka, king of Savatthi and persuaded him to attack
Benares. The bodhisatva was captured and thrown into prison, where he attained the
first jhana. Vanka was seized by a burning sensation and he ordered the release of
the bodhisatva and the restoration of the kingdom. The story was related in reference
to a minister of the Kosala king. He had been the kingís favourite, but then, influence
by slanderers, the king cast him into prison, where he entered the first path. When
he was released, he visited the Buddha, who told him the Jataka story. Ananda is
identified with King Vanka of the Jataka. |
