Kumbhakaara Jaataka |
The bodhisatva was a potter in Benares and to his house came four paccekabuddhas,
whom he welcomed and of whom he asked the stories of their renunciation. Hearing
the stories, the potter and his wife were inspired to renounce the world but they
still had children to look after. The wife deceived her husband, renouncing the world
and leaving her husband to bring up the children alone. When the children grew up,
he too renounced the world. Later, although he met with his wife, he refused to have
anything to do with her. The son was Rahula and the daughter Uppalavanna. The wife
was Rahulamata. The Jataka was related in reference to 500 monks who had lustful
thoughts at midnight. The Buddha had read their thoughts and visited them with Ananda.
