Mahaavedalla | Majjhima | Muulapa.n.naasa, Cuu.layamaka Vagga | MN.043 | M.i.292-8 | 19/278 | psychology, understanding, consciousness, feeling, perception, pure mental consciousness isolated from the five physical senses, right outlook, types of rebirth, jhana | Mahakotthita asks questions on psychological topics such as understanding, consciousness, feeling, perception, pure mental consciousness isolated from the five physical senses, right outlook, types of rebirth, first jhana etc. The sutta is more likely to be compiled as a sort of lesson for learners rather than to be genuine enquiries from Kotthita. This sutta obtained for Kotthita the pre-eminence amongst those possessing the patisambhida. Saariputta also enumerates the two conditions for the arising of Right View (sammaadi.t.thipaccaya): 1. being taught by others (paratoghosa), and; 2. being a teacher to oneself (yonisomanasikaara) at M.i.294. Also distinguished are the three spheres (bhava) of existence: 1. the sensual sphere (kaamabhava); 2. the Brahma world (ruupabhava), and; 3. the formless Brahma world (aruupabhava) at M.i.294. |
