Vaase.t.tha Majjhima Majjhimapa.n.naasa, Braahmana Vagga MN.098 M.ii.196ff. 21/404 hereditary sanctity Bharadvaja maintains that a true brahmin is one who is a pure descendent of seven generations of ancestors without break or blemish in his lineage. Vasettha contends that a true Brahmin is one who is made so by good virtue and moral behaviour. Since neither could convince the other, they agreed to refer the matter to the Buddha who stated that goodness was not hereditary but came as the result of one’s deeds.
