The Buddha enumerates two forms of giving (daana): 1. a gift to a specific person (paa.tipuggalikadaana), and; 2. a gift dedicated to the community (sa"nghadaana). The Buddha asks her to offer the robes as sa"nghadaana (not personally) in order to gain greater merit. Also enumerated are the possibilities for the purification of an offering (dakkhi.naavisuddhi): 1. a gift with a pure giver but an impure recipient; 2. a gift with a pure recipient but an impure giver; 3. a gift where both giver and recipient are impure, and; 4. a gift where both giver and recipient are pure at M.iii.256. |
