George W. Barger was descended from Abraham Barger, a native of North Carolina, born in 1785. Abraham Barger died in Kentucky in 1847. At this time, we are unable to determine exactly who his parents were, but he is possibly related to the Thomas Barger family which came to America from Ireland, or from the George Henry Berger/Barger family which arrived in Philadelphia 1752 from Wurttemburg. Both of those families were prominent in the Piedmont area of western North Carolina and may, or may not, have been related to eachother at some point. Abraham Barger's wife, Polly Bowling, was the daughter of Jessie Bowling and Mary Pennington, and was a direct descendant of Pocahantas and John Rolfe of the Virginia Colony.

The oldest of the six children of Abraham Barger and Polly Bowling was Jesse Barger, the grandfather of George W. Barger. Jesse Barger was born in Kentucky in 1811, the year of the commet and the great New Madrid earthquake. His wife was Elizabeth Johnson, the daughter of Samuel Johnson and Sarey Pennington.

Nelson Barger, the fifth child of Jesse Barger and Elizabeth Johnson, was the father of George W. Barger. Nelson Barger was born in 1842. He married Tibathea Davidson, the daughter of Daniel Davidson and Isobelle McCollum. They had nine children; Rindia, Henry, Nance, Alfred, Polly, Seattie, George, Jesse and Garfield. It is their seventh child, George W. Barger, whose family is set forth above.

Alice Bowling, the wife of George W. Barger, was the daughter of John Bowling and Sally Baker. Alice was of the same old and respected family as Polly Bowling, the great-grandmother of George W. Barger.
