'Lady Ursula Kneeling Before Pompdebile,' by Maxfield Parrish (detail)

"...unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies,
it remains alone..."
Jesus, quoted in John 12:24a (RSV)

DOORWAY

Oh God!  I wish my beloved
and I were already mated.
Eternally and completely
One together, in every way.

Please God, I plead, let it be soon.
I've been long on my knees, begging.
You put me there.  Love put me there.
Now, I get on my face to pray.

My God, I know that You were right
To bring me to my knees, my face.
I sink from the weight of this love.
A burden I bear every day.

Praise God, I see much more clearly
With my face to the ground, heart crushed.
I close my eyes, see only You,
Feel only Love, and in it stay.

With God, I will take one more step.
From my knees to my face, I've gone.
Face on the ground, to lower still.
Buried beneath it, will I lay.

To God, I lose my life.  Leave it.
Freely, happily I give it.
Bury my heart, entomb my soul!
For love, any price I will pay.

Through God, I must go.  Trusting
my life, death, and resurrection
to Him.  Open grave, open door
Within Gods hands, my life to slay.

In God, I have strength, bravery
enough to die.  Forsake the life
I've always known.  No turning back.
Going forward, come what may.

From God, I will gain His promise.
My love-longing He will fulfill.
My beloved waits for me there
beyond this life, not far away.

Thank God!  I feel my heart is joined
With my beloved's, even now.
Its his heart that draws me to him.
That put my face groundward, today.

Dear God, I have to, need to, must!
And You showed me what it will take:
One last step, for all to come true.
It will come true, without delay.

Oh God! I and my beloved
Are predestined to be mated.
I rejoice that we soon will be
One together, in every way.
